Education being one of the cornerstones of the Philippines, teachers may experience pressure and burnout from carrying the workload and responsibilities of being second to parents being the steppingstone for the development of young children. This study used a moderation analysis research design to examine if resilience moderates the relationship between work-related burnout and psychological well-being. Using a non-probability purposive sampling technique, over 233 Filipino public elementary school teachers from Quezon City, Philippines, participated. Results revealed a substantial negative relationship between psychological well-being and work-related burnout, and a positive relationship exists between resilience and psychological well-being. Furthermore, linear regression analysis showed that work-related burnout negatively predicted psychological well-being. Moreover, this study found that resilience does not moderate the association between work-related burnout and psychological well-being among public elementary school teachers.

Abstract Climate warming is one of the facets of anthropogenic global change predicted to increase in the future, its magnitude depending on present-day decisions. The north Atlantic and Arctic Oceans are already undergoing community changes, with warmer-water species expanding northwards, and colder-water species retracting. However, the future extent and implications of these shifts remain unclear. Here, we fitted a joint species distribution model to occurrence data of 107, and biomass data of 61 marine fish species from 16,345 fishery independent trawls sampled between 2004 and 2022 in the northeast Atlantic Ocean, including the Barents Sea. We project overall increases in richness and declines in relative dominance in the community, and generalised increases in species’ ranges and biomass across three different future scenarios in 2050 and 2100. The projected decline of capelin and the practical extirpation of polar cod from the system, the two most abundant species in the Barents Sea, drove an overall reduction in fish biomass at Arctic latitudes that is not replaced by expanding species. Furthermore, our projections suggest that Arctic demersal fish will be at high risk of extinction by the end of the century if no climate refugia is available at eastern latitudes.

The study aimed to assess the students' extent of knowledge and identify their perspectives towards biodiversity and its protection and conservation. A total of 268 randomly selected students at Aurora State College of Technology were involved in the study. Survey questionnaires were used to obtain data and information which were subjected to statistical tests. The students had a moderate knowledge level on biodiversity with a mean score of 6.65 out of 10 items (SD = 1.50). Their perspective on biodiversity was leaning toward its protection and conservation, with a mean score of 7.2 out of 10 items (SD = 1.29). Factors affecting the students' knowledge were gender (p =0 .003) and academic department (p = 0.003). Females and those associated with the Department of Forestry and Environmental Sciences and Department of Industrial technology were found to have more knowledge than the others. Males, on the other hand, were found to have more positive perspectives towards biodiversity. Knowledge and perspective had a weak correlation with r = 0.39. Students were not well-aware, but were in support of the Philippines' biodiversity-related laws, which could help shape their mindset and actions towards biodiversity conservation and protection. Thus, the college administration must revisit the curricula of all degree programs and ensure that students from each degree program are environmentally educated, emphasizing biodiversity conservation.

The Convention on Biological Diversity Target 3 aims for at least 30 % of each marine habitat to be protected by 2030. How much biodiversity will be protected depends on where this 30 % is located. The West Pacific region, having the richest marine biodiversity on Earth, is especially important for nature conservation. Here, using multiple data-driven measures of the breadth biodiversity, from species to ecosystems from the sea surface to seabed, at a spatial resolution of 0.5° (∼55 km latitude), we mapped the optimal “Representative Biodiversity Areas” (RBA) for West Pacific countries using decision support software. The measures included surface and near seabed Ecosystems, which were mapped by physical, biochemical and nutrient variables relevant to ecological functioning. Species richness, seagrass, kelp, mangrove, and shallow water coral reef biomes (biological habitats at a local scale) and seabed topographic variation (as rugosity) were also included as complementary measures to maximise representivity of biodiversity overall. The 30 % RBA generally covered 30 % of the Ecosystems, over 77 % of the Biomes of seagrass, kelp, mangrove, and shallow water corals, and 60 % of physical habitat heterogeneity (topography) and the most species rich areas. Because protecting only these four biomes was not sufficient to include all species, physical habitat heterogeneity and ecosystems should be included in conservation prioritisation because they extend offshore and to all depths. We connect evidence that 20 oC is the most stable temperature for cellular processes with macroecological observations. Examples show that temperatures warmer than ~20 oC result in decreases in: aquatic species’ tolerance to low oxygen; marine pelagic and benthic algal productivity; pelagic and benthic predation rates; global species richness in pelagic fishes, plankton and benthic invertebrates; and genetic diversity; but increased extinctions in the fossil record. The realised thermal niche of reef fishes and invertebrates globally is narrowest among species with distributions centred on 20 oC, as also seen in microbes. While many species have evolved to live at warmer and colder temperatures, most species live at, and extinctions in the fossil record across seven phyla were lower at, 20 oC. The mathematical “Corkrey” model, which predicts that thermal breadth should be minimized and species richness maximised at 20 oC across all Domains of life, provides an explanation for this “20 oC effect”. A literature search found highest species richness at ~20 oC across life in air and water, including animals, plants and microbes. That life seems centred around ~20 oC implies fundamental constraints that compromise the ability of extant tropical species to adapt to higher temperatures.

ObjectivesDetermine patient and provider perspectives on widespread rapid telemedicine implementation, understand the key components of a surgical telemedicine visit and identify factors that affect future telemedicine use.Summary of background dataCompared to other specialties, the field of surgery heretofore has had limited adoption of telemedicine. During the COVID-19 pandemic Healthcare, including the surgical specialties, saw new widespread use of telemedicine.MethodsWe conducted a prospective cohort study during the COVID-19 California stay-at-home and physical distancing executive orders. Utilization data were collected from clinics and compared to usage data during the same time 1 year later. All patients and providers who participated in a telemedicine visit during the study period were asked to complete a survey after each encounter and the surveys were analyzed for trends in opinions on future use by stakeholders.ResultsOver the 10-week period, the median percentage of telemedicine visits per clinic was 33% (17%-51%) which peaked 3 weeks into implementation. One hundred and ninety-one patients (48% women) with a median age of 64 years (IQR 53-73) completed the patient survey. Patients were first-time participants in telemedicine in 41% (n = 79) of visits. Fifty-seven percent (n = 45) of first-time users preferred that future visits be in-person versus 31% of prior users (p = 0.007). The median travel time from home to the clinic was 40 min (IQR = 20-90). Patients with longer travel times were not more likely to use telemedicine in the future (61% with longer travel vs. 53% shorter, p = 0.11). From the 148 provider responses, 90% of the visits providers were able to create a definitive plan with the telemedicine visit. A physical exam was determined not to be needed in 45% of the visits. An attempt at any physical exam was not performed in 84% of routine follow-up or new-patient visits, compared to 53% of post-op visits (p = 0.001).ConclusionTelemedicine is a viable ambulatory visit option for surgical specialists and their patients. During rapid telemedicine deployment, travel distance did not correlate with increased use of telemedicine, and in-person visits are still preferred. However, nearly half of all visits did not need a physical exam, which favors telemedicine use.

Abstract The diverse morphologies of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) motivate their broad potential applications in the next generation of electronic, optical, and catalytic technologies. It is advantageous to develop controllable growth techniques that afford versatility through direct manipulation of the growth parameters. A fundamental understanding of the physical mechanisms driving various growth modes is crucial for achieving the process precision necessary for obtaining reproducible morphologies in 2D TMDs. Thermodynamic and kinetic considerations are two key physical strategies. Thermodynamic strategies mainly involve the manipulation of parameters like temperature and the chemical potential of precursors to ensure the thermostability of various morphologies. Conversely, kinetic strategies, focusing on the factors, like precursor diffusion, adsorption, and desorption during the growth, also enable atomic‐level kinetics control of the resulting morphologies. Often, an interplay of both mechanisms drives the growth of a particular morphology. This review aims to provide an updated guidance for exploiting these physical strategies in the versatile technique of chemical vapor deposition. The opportunities for further exploring the control of these physical mechanisms are discussed through recent examples with an eye on unlocking the untapped potential of 2D TMDs in areas such as phase engineering and shape control for advanced applications.

Background: Extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) in Escherichia coli are a serious concern due to their role in developing multidrug resistance (MDR) and difficult-to-treat infections. Objective: This study aimed to identify ESBL-carrying E. coli strains from both clinical and environmental sources in Lusaka District, Zambia. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 58 ESBL-producing E. coli strains from hospital inpatients, outpatients, and non-hospital environments. Antimicrobial susceptibility was assessed using the Kirby–Bauer disk diffusion method and the VITEK® 2 Compact System, while genotypic analyses utilised the Illumina NextSeq 2000 sequencing platform. Results: Among the strains isolated strains, phylogroup B2 was the most common, with resistant MLST sequence types including ST131, ST167, ST156, and ST69. ESBL genes such as blaTEM-1B, blaCTX-M,blaOXA-1, blaNDM-5, and blaCMY were identified, with ST131 and ST410 being the most common. ST131 exhibited a high prevalence of blaCTX-M-15 and resistance to fluoroquinolones. Clinical and environmental isolates carried blaNDM-5 (3.4%), with clinical isolates showing a higher risk of carbapenemase resistance genes and the frequent occurrence of blaCTX-M and blaTEM variants, especially blaCTX-M-15 in ST131. Conclusions: This study underscores the public health risks of blaCTX-M-15- and blaNDM-5-carrying E. coli. The strengthening antimicrobial stewardship programmes and the continuous surveillance of AMR in clinical and environmental settings are recommended to mitigate the spread of resistant pathogens.

Marine protected areas (MPAs) have been used for biodiversity conservation for decades. However, critics argue that evidence of their economic benefits is weak, particularly with regard to fisheries. This continued opposition to MPAs for fisheries slows progress towards conservation targets and undermines the economic and ecological sustainability of the oceans. This paper provides 48 examples of fishery-related and 31 of tourism-related economic benefits in 25 and 24 countries, respectively. There was no evidence of net costs of MPAs to fisheries anywhere. Fishery benefits included increased fish stocks, catch volumes, catch per unit effort, fecundity and larval export, and larger fish and lobsters. Well-designed and enforced MPAs provide sustainable benefits for fishing communities and even sub-optimally designed MPAs can provide economic advantages. MPAs represent one of the best strategies for maintaining the sustainable exploitation of marine resources.

Patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) face numerous barriers to caring for lower extremity wounds. We explored the perceptions of CLTI patients to their wound/management and sought to determine attitudes towards their vascular provider as well as willingness for management through telemedicine. Patients admitted to hospital for treatment of Rutherford Grade 5 and 6 CLTI were asked complete a wound evaluation survey and took part in a semi-structured interview. Semi-structured interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using an inductive coding strategy. Codes were grouped for thematic analysis and aggregated into assertions. Eleven patients with a mean age of 60 years (35-79 years) were interviewed. All patients had peripheral artery disease (PAD) and eight patients had diabetes as well. Three overarching themes were identified. First, patients appear to have limited coping mechanisms and are overwhelmed by the care of their wounds. Second, in this cohort of patients, many had become passive observers of their care as demonstrated by a limited understanding of their disease processes and detachment from wound management. The third theme was how strong the desire to do everything to prevent limb loss was, but patients acknowledged this is hard to translate into real life with limited resources. Patients with CLTI have concerns that vascular providers must recognize and address to build strong patient-provider relationships and increase activation for management of their wounds and other medical conditions. Patients who have access to technology and with guidance may be able to understand getting care through remote medicine.

Species richness has been found to increase from the poles to the tropics but with a small dip near the equator over all marine fishes. Phylogenetic diversity measures offer an alternative perspective on biodiversity linked to evolutionary history. If phylogenetic diversity is standardized for species richness, then it may indicate places with relatively high genetic diversity. Latitudes and depths with both high species and phylogenetic diversity would be a priority for conservation. We compared latitudinal and depth gradients of species richness, and three measures of phylogenetic diversity, namely average phylogenetic diversity (AvPD), the sum of the higher taxonomic levels (STL) and the sum of the higher taxonomic levels divided by the number of species (STL/spp) for modelled ranges of 5,619 marine fish species. We distinguished all, bony and cartilaginous fish groups and four depth zones namely: whole water column; 0 –200 m; 201–1,000 m; and 1,001–6,000 m; at 5° latitudinal intervals from 75°S to 75°N, and at 100 m depth intervals from 0 m to 3,500 m. Species richness and higher taxonomic richness (STL) were higher in the tropics and subtropics with a small dip at the equator, and were significantly correlated among fish groups and depth zones. Species assemblages had closer phylogenetic relationships (lower AvPD and STL/spp) in warmer (low latitudes and shallow water) than colder environments (high latitudes and deep sea). This supports the hypothesis that warmer shallow latitudes and depths have had higher rates of evolution across a range of higher taxa. We also found distinct assemblages of species in different depth zones such that deeper sea species are not simply a subset of shallow assemblages. Thus, conservation needs to be representative of all latitudes and depth zones to encompass global biodiversity.

Historical fishing effort has resulted, in many parts of the ocean, in increasing catches of smaller, lower trophic level species once larger higher trophic level species have been depleted. Concurrently, changes in the geographic distribution of marine species have been observed as species track their thermal affinity in line with ocean warming. However, geographic shifts in fisheries, including to deeper waters, may conceal the phenomenon of fishing down the food web and effects of climate warming on fish stocks. Fisheries-catch weighted metrics such as the Mean Trophic Level (MTL) and Mean Temperature of the Catch (MTC) are used to investigate these phenomena, although apparent trends of these metrics can be masked by the aforementioned geographic expansion and deepening of fisheries catch across large areas and time periods. We investigated instances of both fishing down trophic levels and climate-driven changes in the geographic distribution of fished species in New Zealand waters from 1950–2019, using the MTL and MTC. Thereafter, we corrected for the masking effect of the geographic expansion of fisheries within these indices by using the Fishing-in-Balance (FiB) index and the adapted Mean Trophic Level (aMTL) index. Our results document the offshore expansion of fisheries across the New Zealand Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) from 1950–2019, as well as the pervasiveness of fishing down within nearshore fishing stock assemblages. We also revealed the warming of the MTC for pelagic-associated fisheries, trends that were otherwise masked by the depth- and geographic expansion of New Zealand fisheries across the study period.

The functional traits of species depend both on species’ evolutionary characteristics and their local environmental conditions and opportunities. The temperature-size rule (TSR), gill-oxygen limitation theory (GOLT), and temperature constraint hypothesis (TCH) have been proposed to explain the gradients of body size and trophic level of marine species. However, how functional traits vary both with latitude and depth have not been quantified at a global scale for any marine taxon. We compared the latitudinal gradients of trophic level and maximum body size of 5,619 marine fish from modelled species ranges, based on (1) three body size ranges, 100 cm, and (2) four trophic levels, 3.70. These were parsed into 5° latitudinal intervals in four depth zones: whole water column, 0–200, 201–1,000, and 1,001–6,000 m. We described the relationship between latitudinal gradients of functional traits and salinity, sea surface and near seabed temperatures, and dissolved oxygen. We found mean body sizes and mean trophic levels of marine fish were smaller and lower in the warmer latitudes, and larger and higher respectively in the high latitudes except for the Southern Ocean (Antarctica). Fish species with trophic levels ≤2.80 were dominant in warmer and absent in colder environments. We attribute these differences in body size and trophic level between polar regions to the greater environmental heterogeneity of the Arctic compared to Antarctica. We suggest that fish species’ mean maximum body size declined with depth because of decreased dissolved oxygen. These results support the TSR, GOLT and TCH hypotheses respectively. Thus, at the global scale, temperature and oxygen are primary factors affecting marine fishes’ biogeography and biological traits.

Taxonomic species are the best standardised metric of biodiversity. Therefore, there is broad scientific and public interest in how many species have already been named and how many more may exist. Crustaceans comprise about 6% of all named animal species and isopods about 15% of all crustaceans. Here, we review progress in the naming of isopods in relation to the number of people describing new species and estimate how many more species may yet be named by 2050 and 2100, respectively. In over two and a half centuries of discovery, 10,687 isopod species in 1,557 genera and 141 families have been described by 755 first authors. The number of authors has increased over time, especially since the 1950s, indicating increasing effort in the description of new species. Despite that the average number of species described per first author has declined since the 1910s, and the description rate has slowed down over the recent decades. Authors’ publication lifetimes did not change considerably over time, and there was a distinct shift towards multi-authored publications in recent decades. Estimates from a non-homogeneous renewal process model predict that an additional 660 isopod species will be described by 2100, assuming that the rate of description continues at its current pace.

Climate warming generally induces poleward range expansions and equatorward range contractions of species’ environmental niches on a global scale. Here, we examined the direction and magnitude of species biomass centroid geographic shifts in relation to temperature and depth for 83 fish species in 9,522 standardised research trawls from the North Sea (1998–2020) to the Norwegian (2000–2020) and Barents Sea (2004–2020). We detected an overall significant northward shift of the marine fish community biomass in the North Sea, and individual species northward shifts in the Barents and North Seas, in 20% and 25% of the species’ biomass centroids in each respective region. We did not detect overall community shifts in the Norwegian Sea, where two species (8%) shifted in each direction (northwards and southwards). Among 9 biological traits, species biogeographic assignation, preferred temperature, age at maturity and maximum depth were significant explanatory variables for species latitudinal shifts in some of the study areas, and Arctic species shifted significantly faster than boreal species in the Barents Sea. Overall, our results suggest a strong influence of other factors, such as biological interactions, in determining several species’ recent geographic shifts.

Pachyrhynchini is a group of flightless plant-feeding weevils known for their complex and iridescent body ornamentation. It has its center of diversity in the Philippines and this paper presents the first comprehensive record of Pachyrhynchini fauna in Davao City. Data gathering was done through a combination of belt transect, photo documentation, and opportunistic sampling techniques. Materials were collected from trees and shrubs in twelve selected green spaces in Davao City using handpicking and bush beating techniques between 2016 and 2019. A total of 1103 individuals consisting of 32 species and two genera-Pachyrhynchus Germar and Metapocyrtus Heller, were documented. Thirty (30) species (93.75%) are endemic to Mindanao, while fifteen (15) species (46.88%) are considered vulnerable based on Department of Environment and Natural Resources Administrative Order No. 2019-09. The high endemism and the presence of rare species associated with the remaining forest patches call for immediate conservation actions.

In college, education should not end when you become a parent. This study explicated the lived experiences of those college education students who became parents before graduation. The struggles and unheard voices of the studentparent are essential in creating recommendations and a management plan that can assist them in continuing what they started. This study utilized Heideggerian Phenomenology. This design is a qualitative study that explicates the lived experiences of the participants who are student-parents of the university. The sampling design utilized in this study was purposive sampling following established inclusion criteria to identify the participants of the study. The participants should be bonafide education students at Cebu Technological University - Moalboal Campus, should have a child or children, and should be living within Moalboal. 5 participants were interviewed. The data gathered were analyzed and interpreted using the Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) popularized by Moustakas and modified by Van Kaam. There were three emerging themes generated after the analysis. These are (Theme 1) The Pillar of Tenacity, (Theme 2) The Pillar of Tranquility, and (Theme 3) The Pillar of Inspiration. These themes are the reflection of the student-parents' lived experiences. It is highly recommended that support programs be instituted to tailor-fit the needs of the student-parents in finishing their journey in college. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
