Clastic sediment composition constitutes a key archive of Earth history, controlled by allogenic and autogenic processes that impact weathering, erosion, sediment transfer, and deposition. Deciphering those processes can provide valuable insights into ancient and modern tectonic, geomorphic, climatic, and anthropogenic controls that shape sediment routing systems over a wide range of temporal and spatial scales. However, in order to clearly identify the controls on sediment composition, it is necessary to exclude sources of bias that may mask or diminish the original provenance signal. Such biases may be natural, including mineral fertility, sediment recycling, and grain size, or analytical. This special collection arises from the fifth meeting of the working group on sediment generation held at the University Milano‐Bicocca in Milan, Italy, from 28 to 30 June 2022. The collation includes studies that investigate biasing factors affecting all steps of the sediment cascade and all stages of sample collection, preparation, and analysis, as well as case studies that aim to disentangle original provenance signals from geological, environmental, or analytical noise. Plain Language Summary: This text introduces the special collection collating contributions arising from the fifth meeting of the working group on sediment generation (WGSG), held at the University Milano‐Bicocca in Milan, Italy, from 28 to 30 June 2022. The WGSG aims at contributing to the understanding of siliciclastic sediment generation. Sediment composition reflects the tectonic, geomorphic, climatic, and anthropogenic characteristics of the Earth surface. Sedimentary successions therefore provide the possibility to interpret ancient Earth surface conditions. The theme of this fifth special collection is the identification and mitigation of natural and analytical bias, that may arise, for example, through the subjective selection of sampling sites or analytical techniques. Bias can create noise, which may prevent the correct interpretation of past Earth surface conditions. The collation includes studies that investigate specific biasing factors, as well as case studies that aim to disentangle original compositional signals from analytical and environmental noise. Titanite is a versatile recorder of crystallization age, temperature, and host lithology, via the U–Pb system, the Zr‐in‐Ttn thermometer, and elemental composition, respectively. The paragenesis of titanite renders it especially useful for tracing detritus derived from lithologies that are infertile for the commonly used detrital zircon U‐Pb chronometer, such as sub‐anatectic metamorphism of calc‐silicates. Despite these advantages, detrital titanite analysis is underemployed, in part because the U–Pb system in titanite is often complicated by the incorporation of both inherited radiogenic Pb from precursor minerals during metamorphic reactions, and also bulk crustal common‐Pb. Recent systematic analyses of large titanite compositional data sets from diverse source rocks have revealed that the elemental composition of titanite is provenance‐specific. Here, we apply a workflow that incorporates a machine‐learning classifier to a large and representative compositional database for titanite, encompassing >11,000 analyses, with c. 6,700 points passed to our model. Only medians of the subcompositions for 205 rocks are used for our model. We reliably discriminate (>90%) between metamorphic and igneous titanite. Application of this classifier to a detrital case study from the Nanga Parbat‐Haramosh syntaxial massif of the western Himalaya reveals that titanite of different compositions formed during different orogenic events. Furthermore, titanite with significant common Pb solely derives from medium/low grade metasedimentary rocks. The method described here offers a pathway to increase the specificity of the provenance information derived from titanite; however, the published corpus of titanite data will have to be much larger before multi‐class source‐rock discrimination can be achieved reliably. Plain Language Summary: The mineral titanite contains information about its age, the type of rock in which it formed, and the temperature at which it grew. By analyzing titanite in detritus, we can learn about the source of that detritus. Despite its potential, the use of titanite is still in its infancy. Much work remains to characterize titanite from all the potential rock types that erode to form sand in order to create predictive models. Here, we build on earlier research that aims to characterize titanite from different rocks. We assemble a large titanite database, which includes all common titanite‐bearing rock types and then analyze it to produce a model that can predict which rock type an individual titanite grain comes from. To do this, we use an approach that is becoming more common in similar studies: machine learning, specifically a method called random forest. Using our approach, we are able to discriminate titanite from igneous and metamorphic common rocks with high accuracy. This work thus increases the usefulness of titanite to understand changes on and below the Earth's surface in deep time. But much more data will be required for schemes that can determine the rock type of titanite in finer detail. We present U–Pb dates from peridotitic pyrope-rich garnet from four mantle xenoliths entrained in a kimberlite from Bultfontein, South Africa. Garnet dates magmatic emplacement due to the high mantle residence temperatures of the source material prior to eruption, which were most likely above the closure temperature for the pyrope U–Pb system. We determine a U–Pb date of 84.0 ± 8.1 Ma for the emplacement of the Bultfontein kimberlite from garnet in our four xenolith samples. The date reproduces previous dates obtained from other mineral-isotope systems (chiefly Rb–Sr in phlogopite). Garnet can be dated despite extremely low concentrations of U (median ∼0.05 μg/g), because concentrations of common Pb are often low or non-detectable. This means that sub-concordant garnets can be dated with moderate precision using very large laser-ablation spots (130 μm) measured by quadrupole inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometry (LA-Q-ICP-MS). Our strategy demonstrates successful U–Pb dating of a U-poor mineral due to high initial ratios of U to common Pb in some grains, and the wide spread of isotopic compositions of grains on a concordia diagram. In addition, the analytical protocol is not complex and uses widely available analytical methods and strategies. This new methodology has some advantages and disadvantages for dating kimberlite emplacement versus established methods (U-based decay systems in perovskite and zircon, or Rb- or K-based systems in phlogopite). However, this method has unique promise for its potential application to detrital diamond prospecting and, more speculatively, to the dating of pyrope inclusions in diamond. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Quartz‐rich sandstones can be produced through multiple sedimentary processes, potentially acting in combination, such as extensive sedimentary recycling or intense chemical weathering. Determining the provenance of such sedimentary rocks can be challenging due to low amounts of accessory minerals, the fact that the primary mineralogy may have been altered during transport, storage or burial and difficulties in the recognition of polycyclic components. This study uses zircon and apatite U‐Pb geochronology, apatite trace elements, zircon‐tourmaline‐rutile indices and petrographic observations to investigate the sedimentary history of mineralogically mature mid‐Carboniferous sandstones of the Tullig Cyclothem, Clare Basin, western Ireland. The provenance data show that the sandstones have been dominantly and ultimately sourced from three basement terranes: older Laurentian‐ associated rocks (ca. 900–2500 Ma) which lay to the north of the basin, peri‐Gondwanan terranes (ca. 500–700 Ma) to the south and igneous intrusive rocks associated with the Caledonian Orogenic Cycle (ca. 380–500 Ma). However, the multi‐proxy approach also helps constrain the sedimentary history and suggests that not all grain populations were derived directly from their original source. Grains with a Laurentian or a Caledonian affinity have likely been recycled through Devonian basins to the south. Grains with a peri‐Gondwanan affinity appear to be first cycle and are potentially derived from south/southwest of the basin. Taken as a whole, these data are consistent with input into the basin from the south and southwest, with the reworking of older sedimentary rocks, rather than intensive first‐cycle chemical weathering, likely explaining the compositional maturity of the sandstones. This study highlights the need for a multi‐proxy provenance approach to constrain sedimentary recycling, particularly in compositionally mature sandstones, as the use of zircon geochronology alone would have led to erroneous provenance interpretations. Zircon, together with U‐Pb geochronology from more labile phases such as apatite, can help distinguish first‐cycle versus polycyclic detritus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Extensive ice coverage largely prevents investigations of Antarctica's unglaciated past. Knowledge about environmental and tectonic development before large-scale glaciation, however, is important for understanding the transition into the modern icehouse world. We report geochronological and sedimentological data from a drill core from the Amundsen Sea shelf, providing insights into tectonic and topographic conditions during the Eocene (~44 to 34 million years ago), shortly before major ice sheet buildup. Our findings reveal the Eocene as a transition period from >40 million years of relative tectonic quiescence toward reactivation of the West Antarctic Rift System, coinciding with incipient volcanism, rise of the Transantarctic Mountains, and renewed sedimentation under temperate climate conditions. The recovered sediments were deposited in a coastal-estuarine swamp environment at the outlet of a >1500-km-long transcontinental river system, draining from the rising Transantarctic Mountains into the Amundsen Sea. Much of West Antarctica hence lied above sea level, but low topographic relief combined with low elevation inhibited widespread ice sheet formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
