Abstract

Increasing plant productivity to increase sugar production can be done by developing new superior varieties from crossing superior sugarcane clones. The research aimed to obtain clones from crossing with higher sugar yields than the female parents. The study was done at IP2TP Karangploso, Malang, Indonesia, from December 2020 to November 2022. As many as 24 clones from polycross and one female parent were arranged in a Randomized Block Design with 2 replications. The results showed that 11 polycross clones (19/P3/2, 19/P3/4, 19/P3/7, 19/P3/10, 19/P3/13, 19/P3/16, 19/P3/17, 19/P3/20, 19/P3/28, 19/P3/32, and 19/P3/34) produced sugar 15.54-105.04% higher than the female parent (6.19 t/ha).

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the effect of the strategic orientation dimension on the culinary business market performance in Kendari City during the Corona Virus Disease Pandemic. The method used was descriptive quantitative with a non-probability sampling approach with purposive sampling technique. The population was culinary business actors who still survive and have been running for the business more than 2 years during the COVID-19 pandemic. The sample in this study only obtained 38 respondents. The data analysis technique in this research was path analysis using SmartPLS VS 3.0. The results showed an analysis of the strategic dimensions that have an aggressive attitude and had significant effect on market performance so that culinary business actors can improve their market performance during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Three different cell lines HepG2 (human liver cell), CRI-D2 (mice pancreatic cell) and C2C12 (rat myoblast) were used for cell culture experiments. Cell viability was measured using MTT assay. Cells were treated with various concentrations of the extract (6.25– 400 μg/mL) and then the extracellular glucose level and intracellular glycogen content were measured using colorimetric methods. The insulin level of the culture medium was measured using the ELISA method.Results: Our findings showed that R. anatolicus extract enhances glucose uptake and consumption by all three cell lines. The R. anatolicus extract exposure also elevated cellular glycogen content in HepG2 and C2C12 cells (for 200 and 100 μg/mL) significantly. We found a significant increase in glucose uptake and consequently higher stimulation of insulin secretion in CRI-D2 cell pancreatic cells treated with R. anatolicus extract.Conclusion: The R. anatolicus appears to activate glucose uptake and cellular glycogen synthesis probably by activating the glycogenesis or inhibition of glycogenolysis pathways. Abstract

Kenaf merupakan salah satu tanaman yang menghasilkan serat alam. Infeksi Meloidogyne incognita (nematoda puru akar) pada tanaman kenaf menyebabkan tanaman kerdil sehingga menurunkan produksi tanaman. Penelitian ini bertujuan menentukan ketahanan tujuh genotipe kenaf terhadap M. incognita. Percobaan dilakukan dengan menginfestasi tanaman kenaf yang berumur 15 hari setelah tanam (HST) dengan M. incognita pada populasi 40 nematoda juvenil 2 per 100 g tanah. Medium tanam yang digunakan ialah tanah berpasir dengan komposisi pasir 55%, debu 36%, dan liat 17%. Variabel ketahanan terdiri atas indeks puru akar dan faktor reproduksi nematoda. Analisis asam salisilat, fenol, lignin serta beberapa variabel pertumbuhan tanaman dilakukan pada umur tanaman 75 HST. Diantara tujuh genotipe tanaman kenaf yang dievaluasi terdapat 3 genotipe yang toleran (KR4, KR15 dan KR5) dan 4 genotipe sangat rentan (KR1, KR6, Kin2, dan DS028). Genotipe yang memiliki respons toleran terhadap M. incognita menunjukkan peningkatan senyawa fenol, asam salisilat, dan lignin pada akar dibandingkan dengan kontrol. Penurunan tinggi tanaman, bobot segar tajuk, dan bobot segar akar bervariasi akibat infeksi M. incognita.

Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is involved in carcinogenesis as an inflammatory marker, and microRNA-146a (miR-146a) as a negative regulatory factor. We aimed to evaluate miR146a expression as a prognostic or diagnostic biomarker for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and also an association between miR146a and COX2 expression.Materials and Methods: We quantified the level of miR-146a and COX-2 expression in cancerous and adjacent normal tissue samples obtained from 34 patients with ESCC, using real-time–PCR. Statistical analyses were conducted using one-sample t-test. Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve and Kaplan–Meier analysis were applied to assay miR146a as a diagnostic and prognostic marker, respectively, during 4 years of the study. Furthermore, the Cox regression model was performed to assay the hazard ratio (HR). The association between miR-146a and COX2 expression level in ESCC patients was evaluated by nonparametric Spearman’s rho analysis.Results: The results revealed a reduction of miR-146a expression in 50% of cancerous tissue when compared with adjacent normal regions (P-value=0.127). COX-2 expression in 80% of ESCC patients was higher than in the controls (P-value=0.001). Overall, in 60% of cases, direct association was seen between microRNA-146a and COX-2 expression level (correlation coefficient= 0.438, P-value=0.011). COX2 can be considered as a diagnostic biomarker (AUC=0.834, sensitivity=72%, specificity =83%, P-value< 0.0001) but miR146a cannot be considered as a diagnostic biomarker (AUC=0.553, sensitivity=88%, specificity =28%, P-value=0.453). Survival analysis by Kaplan–Meier method showed miR146a and COX2 expression can be probably considered as prognostic biomarkers for ESCC because patients with high expression of miR146a had 7 months shorter life span and patients with low expression of COX2 had 8 months shorter life span.Conclusion: COX2 expression is a diagnostic biomarker. 6. Differentially Private Best-Arm Identification

Abstract

Best Arm Identification (BAI) problems are progressively used for data-sensitive applications, such as designing adaptive clinical trials, tuning hyper-parameters, and conducting user studies. Motivated by the data privacy concerns invoked by these applications, we study the problem of BAI with fixed confidence in both the local and central models, i.e. $\epsilon$-local and $\epsilon$-global Differential Privacy (DP). First, to quantify the cost of privacy, we derive lower bounds on the sample complexity of any $\delta$-correct BAI algorithm satisfying $\epsilon$-global DP or $\epsilon$-local DP. Our lower bounds suggest the existence of two privacy regimes. In the high-privacy regime, the hardness depends on a coupled effect of privacy and novel information-theoretic quantities involving the Total Variation. In the low-privacy regime, the lower bounds reduce to the non-private lower bounds. We propose $\epsilon$-local DP and $\epsilon$-global DP variants of a Top Two algorithm, namely CTB-TT and AdaP-TT*, respectively. For $\epsilon$-local DP, CTB-TT is asymptotically optimal by plugging in a private estimator of the means based on Randomised Response. For $\epsilon$-global DP, our private estimator of the mean runs in arm-dependent adaptive episodes and adds Laplace noise to ensure a good privacy-utility trade-off. Metal oxide nanoporous materials and nanoparticles have main potential uses in several different fields such as nanoelectronics, biomedical science, renewable solar energy, drug-gene delivery, thermal insulation, and so on. On the other hand, it is vital for scientists to understand that agricultural waste biomass-assisted synthesis is less costly, environmentally friendly and renewable strategy, and therefore, agricultural wastes are ideal renewable resources for production of nanostructures as a substitute for toxic chemicals. This present review includes significant recent improvements concerning the synthesis of agricultural waste biomass-assisted metal oxide nanostructures and their application. The goal is to provide a vision for the use of non-extracted agricultural waste, especially lignocellulosic biomass an inexpensive, green, differentiated resource and policy for the synthesis of valuable nanoporous materials and nanoparticles.

Abstract

Pyrazolopyridine and pyrazoloquinoline derivatives were obtained by a one-pot, three-component reaction of arylglyoxals, 3-methyl-1-aryl-1H-pyrazol-5-amines and cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds in the presence of tetrapropylammonium bromide at 80°C in water through Knoevenagel and Micheal reactions, followed by intramolecular condensation, unexpected dearoylation and oxidation. Mild reaction conditions, high yields, simplicity of work up procedure, starting materials availability and clean product formation are some of the main advantages of this synthetic strategy.

Altered metabolic status is one of the consequences of sHT which can affect serum levels of FPG, lipid profile, and nitric oxide which propounds cardiovascular consequences per se. Abstract

Aging population rate in Malaysia is getting higher every year. When people becoming older, they start losing their abilities to do some of the activities properly and easily that they were able to do when they were younger. Basic tasks like cooking and cleaning, which were once part of manageable daily routine, become too difficult to perform as they enter to the elderly age. Despite this, many elderlies choose to live independently in their own home. This paper presents a new approach to utilize advanced Internet of Things (IoT) based pulse sensors for elderly. This proposed solution is an embedded scheme that support elderly with controlled automation solution that control and operates various home electrical appliances such as lights, fans, and televisions based on the measurement of pulse rate and instructions. The solution consists of pulse sensors, microcontrollers which integrated with Blynk server as a communication protocol. The proposed solution aims to minimize elderly movement by providing substantial assistance to the physically challenged elderly without assistance from any third person. The scope of the article focuses on enhancing and improving quality life of elderly. The main advantage of the proposed solution is that it is sensible and required zero technology knowledge that provides users with an automation solution with minimum movement needed. The proposed solution reduces human labours, effort, and energy conservation in the meantime. This study is limited to the scale of elderly in Malaysia rather than the whole world.

26. Towards Instance-Optimality in Online PAC Reinforcement Learning

Abstract

Several recent works have proposed instance-dependent upper bounds on the number of episodes needed to identify, with probability $1-\delta$, an $\varepsilon$-optimal policy in finite-horizon tabular Markov Decision Processes (MDPs). These upper bounds feature various complexity measures for the MDP, which are defined based on different notions of sub-optimality gaps. However, as of now, no lower bound has been established to assess the optimality of any of these complexity measures, except for the special case of MDPs with deterministic transitions. In this paper, we propose the first instance-dependent lower bound on the sample complexity required for the PAC identification of a near-optimal policy in any tabular episodic MDP. Additionally, we demonstrate that the sample complexity of the PEDEL algorithm of \cite{Wagenmaker22linearMDP} closely approaches this lower bound. Considering the intractability of PEDEL, we formulate an open question regarding the possibility of achieving our lower bound using a computationally-efficient algorithm.

Motivated by the data privacy concerns invoked by these applications, we study the problem of BAI with fixed confidence under $\epsilon$-global Differential Privacy (DP). First, to quantify the cost of privacy, we derive a lower bound on the sample complexity of any $\delta$-correct BAI algorithm satisfying $\epsilon$-global DP. Our lower bound suggests the existence of two privacy regimes depending on the privacy budget $\epsilon$. In the high-privacy regime (small $\epsilon$), the hardness depends on a coupled effect of privacy and a novel information-theoretic quantity, called the Total Variation Characteristic Time. In the low-privacy regime (large $\epsilon$), the sample complexity lower bound reduces to the classical non-private lower bound. Second, we propose AdaP-TT, an $\epsilon$-global DP variant of the Top Two algorithm. AdaP-TT runs in arm-dependent adaptive episodes and adds Laplace noise to ensure a good privacy-utility trade-off. We derive an asymptotic upper bound on the sample complexity of AdaP-TT that matches with the lower bound up to multiplicative constants in the high-privacy regime. Finally, we provide an experimental analysis of AdaP-TT that validates our theoretical results.

29. Active Coverage for PAC Reinforcement Learning

Abstract

Collecting and leveraging data with good coverage properties plays a crucial role in different aspects of reinforcement learning (RL), including reward-free exploration and offline learning. However, the notion of "good coverage" really depends on the application at hand, as data suitable for one context may not be so for another. In this paper, we formalize the problem of active coverage in episodic Markov decision processes (MDPs), where the goal is to interact with the environment so as to fulfill given sampling requirements. This framework is sufficiently flexible to specify any desired coverage property, making it applicable to any problem that involves online exploration. Our main contribution is an instance-dependent lower bound on the sample complexity of active coverage and a simple game-theoretic algorithm, CovGame, that nearly matches it. We then show that CovGame can be used as a building block to solve different PAC RL tasks. In particular, we obtain a simple algorithm for PAC reward-free exploration with an instance-dependent sample complexity that, in certain MDPs which are "easy to explore", is lower than the minimax one. By further coupling this exploration algorithm with a new technique to do implicit eliminations in policy space, we obtain a computationally-efficient algorithm for best-policy identification whose instance-dependent sample complexity scales with gaps between policy values., Comment: Accepted at COLT 2023

30. Authentically Paving the Way: Exploring Black Women Leadership Success at Hispanic Serving Institutions

Abstract

Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) educate more Black, Latinx, and Indigenous students than predominantly White Serving Institutions, yet their leadership lacks representation, especially of Black women leaders. This study explores the experiences of Black women leaders at HSIs. Moving beyond a deficit model, exploring how these leaders leverage their expertise and cultural identities to navigate these institutions. The purpose of this narrative qualitative study is to explore the experiences of Black women professionals in HSIs, as well as factors that influence their professional development, advancement, and sense of belonging. In an effort to improve the experiences of Black women professionals working in higher education institutions, the research will examine how they experience being a Black women leader in higher education. Drawing on Black Feminist Thought for a deeper exploration of the experiences of Black women working in HSI postsecondary institutions, this study explores how the campus community benefits from Black women being their authentic selves. Findings show Black women contribute to the academic excellence of HSIs through diverse perspectives, mentorship for students of color, and institutional advancement. The unique challenges Black women face in prioritizing well-being within a professional environment may not fully reflect their experiences. The study offers recommendations for HSIs to foster a more inclusive climate and increase the representation and belonging of Black women leaders. By amplifying the voices and experiences of Black women, this work underscores their critical role in shaping the future of HSIs. Abstract

Background : In preparation for pandemic HINI or H1N1 influenza (H1N1) it is necessary to identify factors associated with mortality of patients with HINI and hospital admissions to intensive care unit (ICU) of patients diagnosed in 2009 with HINI. Objectives : To describe the clinical and epidemiological features associated with 2009 HIN1 mortality and ICU patient admissions to Masih Daneshvari Teaching Hospital, Iran. Methods : A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted among patients with mortality and admissions to ICU with confirmed HINI. Demographic, clinical, laboratory, radiological findings, and epidemiologic data were abstracted from medical records, using a standardized datasheet. Results : From June through December 2009, 20 out of the 46 confirmed hospitalized patients with confirmed H1NI were admitted to the ICU and 7 (15%) died. Among various variables, opium inhalation (P = 0.01), having productive cough, hemoptysis, chest pain, confusion, and loss of consciousness were significantly related to ICU admission (P < 0.05). Pleural effusion (P = 0.006), elevated liver enzymes, as well as CPK and LDH level were significantly relevant to ICU admission (P < 0.05). Delayed antiviral treatment was more common among patients who died and the elderly. Discussion : Patients who were admitted to ICU with confirmed H1N1 included the following risk factors: delayed initiation of antiviral therapy, history of opium inhalation and symptoms including; productive cough, hemoptysis, chest pain, confusion, and loss of consciousness. The mortality rate in the study population was high but compares favorably with other recent published studies.

Abstract

Event-based cameras (ECs) are bio-inspired sensors that asynchronously report brightness changes for each pixel. Due to their high dynamic range, pixel bandwidth, temporal resolution, low power consumption, and computational simplicity, they are beneficial for vision-based projects in challenging lighting conditions and they can detect fast movements with their microsecond response time. The first generation of ECs are monochrome, but color data is very useful and sometimes essential for certain vision-based applications. The latest technology enables manufacturers to build color ECs, trading off the size of the sensor and substantially reducing the resolution compared to monochrome models, despite having the same bandwidth. In addition, ECs only detect changes in light and do not show static or slowly moving objects. We introduce a method to detect full RGB events using a monochrome EC aided by a structured light projector. The projector emits rapidly changing RGB patterns of light beams on the scene, the reflection of which is captured by the EC. We combine the benefits of ECs and projection-based techniques and allow depth and color detection of static or moving objects with a commercial TI LightCrafter 4500 projector and a monocular monochrome EC, paving the way for frameless RGB-D sensing applications.

42. Optimistic PAC Reinforcement Learning: the Instance-Dependent View

Abstract

Optimistic algorithms have been extensively studied for regret minimization in episodic tabular MDPs, both from a minimax and an instance-dependent view. However, for the PAC RL problem, where the goal is to identify a near-optimal policy with high probability, little is known about their instance-dependent sample complexity. A negative result of Wagenmaker et al. (2021) suggests that optimistic sampling rules cannot be used to attain the (still elusive) optimal instance-dependent sample complexity. On the positive side, we provide the first instance-dependent bound for an optimistic algorithm for PAC RL, BPI-UCRL, for which only minimax guarantees were available (Kaufmann et al., 2021). While our bound features some minimal visitation probabilities, it also features a refined notion of sub-optimality gap compared to the value gaps that appear in prior work. Moreover, in MDPs with deterministic transitions, we show that BPI-UCRL is actually near-optimal. On the technical side, our analysis is very simple thanks to a new "target trick" of independent interest. We complement these findings with a novel hardness result explaining why the instance-dependent complexity of PAC RL cannot be easily related to that of regret minimization, unlike in the minimax regime., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2203.09251

Abstract

Urinary tract infection is one of the most common bacteria infections. The incidence of urinary tract infections in school age is more common in girls than in boys. Children have to be screened for asymptomatic bacteriuria before they reach to the state of renal damage. In our district no such study has been made to determine the prevalence of bacteriuria. Urine samples were collected from 642 school girls aged between 6-11 years, and were investigated by doing urine analysis and urine culture. 15 girls had significant bacteriuria, (>10^5 bacteria/ml). 11 children had pyuria (WBC>5), and 6 samples had both significant bacteriuria and pyuria. At the same time there were 5 cases with sterile pyuria. 6 girls had nitrite in their urine samples. All of the urine samples with positive nitrite test had significant bacteriuria. The study shows that there is a positive correlation between pyuria of nitrite and significant bacteriuria. Escherichia-coli is the most common microorganism in schoolgirls with significant bacteriuria. The incidence of screening bacteriuria was 2.3% which most of them were asymptomatic.
