Abstract

This paper aims to analyse the significant roles of using hand phones in the management of vegetable-based agribusiness. The fact that vegetable intensive vegetable farming is a risky business has motivated this study. Being risk averter is one of the serious reasons for success of agribusiness. Economic and natural elements are the stems of risk. Potential risk is exaggerated with evidence that vegetable products are perishable, which directly associated with post-harvest handlings. Farmers as the key agribusiness players require information accessed using hand phone for planning agribusiness. This study selected farmers as the subject of agribusiness based on intensive vegetable farming. This study collected data by conducting field surveys; and applied an approach of structural equation modelling (SEM) to measure the indirect and direct effects of multiple dependent variables in simultaneous regressions. The analysis shows that hand phone acted potential roles in agribusiness. It could increase profit of agribusiness mediated by sale volume and price of vegetables. The hand phones empowered the farmers because they could acquire market information, credit and customers, and improve agronomic technology. Despite available and affordable hand phone, the adoption in agribusiness activities was far below the expected level. The farmers need encouragement to use the gadget. Abstract

High-valued vegetable farming can increase farmers’ income if the vegetables are cultivated in commercial manner. This paper analyzes factors that determine farmers’ intention to commercialize vegetable farming; and the effect of commercialization on farmers’ income. The study used structural equation model to estimate paths affecting farmers to engage commercial farming and its impact of commercial on households’ income. Household and farm characteristics, business environment, and market support were hypothesized to influence farmers to commercialize vegetable farming. Data for this study were compiled from a quantitative survey of 360 farm households located in four major vegetable producing regions of Eastern Indonesia. Results indicate that commercial vegetable farming provides economic advantage in terms of increased income. To encourage commercial vegetable farming, vegetable agribusiness terminal with all market infrastructures should be established in the potential vegetable producing regions of Indonesia.

Abstract

The Indonesian agricultural sector provides a high proportion of employment for the rural community. However, the farmers' livelihood is relatively low. Sending the farmers to non-formal education will enhance the livelihood of the community. In this study, we analyze the impact of farmer field school on Indonesia's rural community livelihoods. Data were collected using a participatory approach from 270 farmer groups that completed farmer field school in Sumatra, Java, and Bali. The results show that the farmer field school generated positive impacts on five capitals. Farmers realized the benefits of participating in the field school. They could increase farming efficiency by applying technology innovations, knowledge, and skills obtained from the field school. Farmer livelihoods in the community have been substantially enhanced.
