Water pressures at the base of active glacial overdeepenings are known to fluctuate strongly on various time scales. Rapid peaks in basal water pressure can lead to fracturing of the glacier bed, a process that has been described at numerous sites around the world, mostly based on large hydrofracture systems. This article presents drill-cores from the base of a >100-m-deep glacial overdeepening in the Lower Aare Valley in northern Switzerland that were investigated with high-resolution imaging (including X-ray computed tomography) as well as compositional and microstructural analyses. The drill-cores recovered Jurassic limestones hosting palaeokarst voids infilled with blue clay. We identify this clay, based on its kaolinitic composition, as siderolithic Bolus Clay but in a rather atypical variety formed under reducing conditions. The surfaces of the palaeokarst walls show smoothly undulating as well as brecciated sections with form-fit interlocking clasts, which are the result of an in situ brecciation process. We argue that these particular fractures are not related to (glacio-)tectonics or frost action. Instead, we suggest an explanation by involving water-pressure peaks that were transmitted to the void walls by the clayey karst filling, resulting in hydrofracturing. In addition to pervasive karstification and tectonic overprinting, this water pressure-driven fracturing may have enhanced the deep incision of the overdeepening into the rheologically competent bedrock.

The modern, over 250-m-deep basin of Lake Constance represents the underfilled northern part of an over 400-m-deep, glacially overdeepened trough, which reaches well into the Alps at its southern end. The overdeepening was formed by repeated glacial advance-retreat cycles of the Rhine Glacier throughout the Middle to Late Pleistocene. A seismic survey of Lake Constance revealed a Quaternary sediment fill of more than 150 m thickness representing at least the last glacial cycle. The stratified sedimentary fill consists at the base of ice-contact deposits on top of the molasse bedrock, overlain by glaciolacustrine to lacustrine sediments. During the successful field test of a newly developed, mid-size coring system ("HIPERCORIG"), the longest core (HIBO19) ever taken in Lake Constance was retrieved with an overall length of 24 m. The sediments recovered consist of a nearly continuous succession of lacustrine silts and sands including more than 12 m of Late Glacial sediment at the base. 14 lithotypes were identified through petrophysical and geochemical analyses. In combination with a 14C- and OSL-based age-depth model, the core was divided into three main chronostratigraphic units. The basal age of ~13.7 ka BP dates the base of the succession back to the Bølling-Allerød interstadial, with overlying strata representing a complete and thick Younger-Dryas to Holocene succession. The sediments offer a high-resolution insight into the evolution of paleo-Lake Constance from a cold, postglacial to a more productive, warm Holocene lake. The Late Glacial succession is dominated by massive, m-thick sand beds reflecting episodic sedimentation pulses. They are most likely linked to a subaquatic channel system originating in the river Seefelder Aach, which is, despite the Holocene drape, still apparent in today's lake bathymetry. The overlying Holocene succession reveals a prominent, several cm-thick, double-turbiditic event layer representing the most distal impact of the Flimser Bergsturz, the largest known rockslide of the Alps that occurred over 100 km upstream the river Rhine at ~9.5 ka BP. Furthermore, lithologic variations in the Holocene succession document the varying sediment loads of the river Rhine and the endogenic production representing a multitude of environmental changes.

Subglacial overdeepenings are a common element of once glaciated mountain forelands and have considerable implications for society, e.g. in construction projects, water production and radioactive waste disposal. Yet the processes of overdeepening erosion, especially the influence of bedrock lithology and structure, are poorly understood. We present a case study of the Gebenstorf-Stilli Trough in northern Switzerland, a unique overdeepening with complex underlying geology: In contrast to the Molasse-hosted majority of the Alpine foreland overdeepenings, it is to a large part incised into Upper Jurassic limestones and marls. In order to constrain its morphology in 3D, it was targeted with scientific boreholes as well as a seismic campaign based on analysis of surface waves. The results reveal unexpected trough morphology with two nested sub-basins that appear to be closely related to the bedrock geology. We suggest that this morphology is a product of low erosional efficiency in Jurassic limestones in comparison with both underlying marls and overlying Molasse deposits as well as secondary paleoglaciological effects. We further infer that the glacier’s basal drainage system was the main driver of subglacial erosion of the Gebenstorf-Stilli Trough.

The modern basin of trinational Lake Constance, between Switzerland, Germany, and Austria, represents the underfilled northern part of a glacially overdeepened trough. It is over 400 m deep and reaches well into the Alps at its southern end. The overdeepening was formed by the numerous glacial advance-retreat cycles of the Rhine Glacier throughout the Middle to Late Quaternary. A seismic survey of Lake Constance revealed a Quaternary sediment fill of over 150 m thickness under the modern lake floor in a maximal water depth of >250 m. This sedimentary sequence represents at least the last glacial cycle with ice-contact deposits at the base on top of the Molasse bedrock overlain by glaciolacustrine to lacustrine sediments. During the successful field test of a newly developed mid-size coring system ("HIPERCORIG"), the longest core ever taken in Lake Constance was recovered with an overall length of 24 m. The drill core, taken in a water depth of 200 m, consists of a nearly continuous succession of lacustrine sediments including over 12 m of pre-Holocene sediment at the base. The entire core was petrophysically and geochemically analyzed, sedimentologically described, and 14 lithotypes were identified. In combination with a 14C- and OSL-based age-depth model, the core was divided into three main chronostratigraphic units. The basal age of ~13.7 ka BP places the base of the section back into the Bølling-Allerød interstadial whereas the overlying strata represent a complete Younger-Dryas and Holocene section.The sediments offer a high-resolution insight into the evolution of Paleolake Constance from a cold postglacial to a more productive warm Holocene lake. The Late Glacial sections are dominated by massive, m-thick sand beds reflecting episodic sedimentation pulses. They are most likely linked with a subaquatic channel system that is still apparent in today's lake bathymetry despite the Holocene drape. This channel system was fed from a Late Glacial river from the north; provenance analysis of the initially unexpected sands together with hydrologic considerations will document whether this inflowing high-discharge river represented a local catchment (i.e. northern lake shore) or an Alpine signal (i.e. from the south) provided by the Rhine glacier. Tentative pore water hydrogeochemical and isotope analyses indicate a still active flow system at depth. The overlying Holocene section reveals a prominent, several cm-thick double-turbiditic event layer representing the most distal impact of the "Flimser Bergsturz", the largest known rock slide of the Alps that occurred over 100 km upstream the Rhine River at ~9.5 ka BP. Furthermore, lithologic variations in the Holocene section document the varying sediment load of the Rhine and of the endogenic production representing a multitude of environmental changes.

Subglacial overdeepenings are common elements of mountain forelands and have considerable implications for human infrastructure. Yet, the processes of overdeepening by subglacial erosion and especially the role of bedrock geology are poorly understood. We present a case study of the Gebenstorf-Stilli Trough in northern Switzerland, a foreland overdeepening with a regionally unique, complex underlying bedrock geology: in contrast to other Swiss foreland overdeepenings, it is incised not only into Cenozoic Molasse deposits, but also into the underlying Mesozoic bedrock. In order to constrain the trough morphology in 3D, it was targeted with scientific boreholes as well as with seismic measurements acquired through analysis of surface waves. Our results reveal an unexpectedly complex trough morphology that appears to be closely related to the bedrock geology. Two sub-basins are incised into calcareous marls and Molasse deposits, and are separated by a distinct ridge of Jurassic limestones, indicating strong lithological control on erosional efficiency. We infer generally relatively low glacial erosion efficiency sensu stricto (i.e. quarrying and abrasion) and suggest that the glacier's basal drainage system may have been the main driver of subglacial erosion of the Gebenstorf-Stilli Trough.

Luminescence dating has become a pillar of the understanding of Pleistocene glacial advances in the northern foreland of the Swiss Alps. However, both quartz and feldspar from the region are equally challenging as dosimeters with anomalous fading and partial bleaching being some of the obstacles to overcome for the establishment of decisive chronologies. In this study, luminescence properties of coarse- and fine-grained quartz, feldspar, and polymineral fractions of eight samples from a palaeovalley, Rinikerfeld in northern Switzerland, are systematically assessed. Standard performance tests are conducted on all four fractions. Deconvolution of luminescence signals of the quartz fractions is implemented and shows the dominance of stable fast components. Reader-specific low preheat temperatures are investigated on the infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) signal of feldspar. Thermal stability of this signal is found for low preheats, and thermal quenching could be excluded for higher preheats. However, anomalous fading is observed in the feldspar and polymineral IRSL signals and two correction approaches are applied. For one approach, fading corrected coarse-grained feldspar ages are consistent with those derived from quartz. In general, coarse-grained quartz and feldspar, as well as the fine-grained polymineral fraction of one sample, are in chrono-stratigraphic agreement and present negligible evidence for partial bleaching. However, ages derived from fine-grained quartz are found to underestimate those of the coarse-grained quartz fractions. Hence, the impact of alpha efficiency and water content on the dose rate and thus the ages are assessed. A finite explanation for the observed discrepancies remains lacking, but this systematic investigation of different luminescence signals allows for the establishment of a chronology for the palaeovalley fill dating back to at least Marine Isotope Stage 6 (MIS 6).

Luminescence dating has become a pillar of the understanding of Pleistocene glacial advances in the northern foreland of the Swiss Alps. However, both quartz and feldspar from the region are equally challenging as dosimeters with anomalous fading, partial bleaching and unstable components being some of the obstacles to overcome. In this study, luminescence properties of coarse- and fine-grained quartz, feldspar and polymineral fractions of eight samples from a palaeovalley, Rinikerfeld, in northern Switzerland are assessed and found appropriate for dating. While anomalous fading of the IRSL signal of the feldspar and polymineral fraction is observed, fading corrected coarse-grained feldspar ages are consistent with those derived from quartz. In general, coarse-grained quartz and feldspar as well as the fine-grained polymineral fractions are in agreement and present negligible evidence for partial bleaching. However, ages derived from fine-grained quartz are found to underestimate those of the coarse-grained quartz fractions. Impact of total dose rate on finite ages was assessed but age underestimation is likely due to grain size dependent luminescence properties. The top six samples indicate sedimentation of at least 16.6 m during Marine Isotope Stage 6 with a rapid transition from a lacustrine environment to a landscape dominated by colluvial deposits. For the two lowest samples, no finite ages are derived.

Subglacial overdeepenings are common features of past and presently glaciated landscapes. In the Northern Alpine Foreland, these troughs occur mostly within the rather soft, poorly lithified sandstones of the Molasse basin. An exceptional setting is the Lower Aare Valley in Northern Switzerland, where a narrow, finger-like overdeepening (Gebenstorf-Stilli Trough) has been incised more than 100 m below the present surface into the fold-and-thrust belt of the Jura Mountains with its diverse Mesozoic lithologies including competent limestone units. Consequently, the morphology of this overdeepening can provide valuable information on lithological and structural controls on subglacial overdeepening erosion.We investigate the Gebenstorf-Stilli Trough with three scientific boreholes located along the South-North oriented trough axis. In addition, a set of seismic cross-sections has been acquired by a combination of active and passive seismic approaches analysing surface waves, namely passive horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) measurements, active measurements applying multiple filter analysis of group velocity (MFA), and extended spatial auto correlation of ambient vibration array data (ESAC). Preliminary results show that the base of the overdeepening can be well imaged using our methodology. In combination with borehole information, surface elevation data and 3D models of the subsurface geology, we see great potential to better constrain the morphology of the Gebenstorf-Stilli Trough, and to assess how different bedrock lithologies and structures influence subglacial overdeepening erosion – an underexplored and poorly understood issue.

Overdeepened glacial basins are excellent archives for the Quaternary glaciation history and the landscape evolution of the Alps. While they are common large-scale glacial features in many inner-Alpine and foreland settings, most of these basins remain underexplored as challenging drilling operations into 10s to 100s of meters of unconsolidated sediment are required to access the sedimentary record.We currently investigate some of the most prominent overdeepened glacial basins between the Aare and Rhine Rivers in Northern Switzerland with a multi-method approach – including geophysical methods and scientific drilling – to characterise the geometry, sedimentary infill and age of these glacial basins. The focus of this research is on 1) extracting and refining the Middle to Late Pleistocene glaciation history of Northern Switzerland, and 2) identifying the mechanisms and controls of overdeepening subglacial erosion by characterizing former ice-contacts in the basin fills using micro- to macroscale sedimentological tools.

The northern margin of the West African Craton preserved in the Anti-Atlas area of southern Morocco, represents an outstanding geological archive covering parts of the Neoproterozoic and the Paleozoic. Despite isolated mentions in the literature, relics of Neoproterozoic glaciations have hitherto not received much attention in this area and tight geochronological constraints had been lacking. This paper documents the sedimentology and stratigraphic context of several occurrences from the eastern and central Anti-Atlas. Based on outcrop-scale sedimentological and microsedimentological investigations, different types of diamictites are distinguished and their origin with reference to modern glacial systems is discussed. The sedimentary record is explained by one single glacial period (albeit interrupted by interglacial phases) affecting both mountainous terrestrial and marine realms. Sedimentary facies and preserved paleotopographies are best accounted for by invoking a fjord-like depositional system with steep-sided valleys being repeatedly drowned by marine water or occupied by valley glaciers. High-precision geochronological constraints suggest that this glacial period must have taken place sometimes between 592 Ma and 579 Ma. Hence it is suggested that this is the first temporally constrained report of the Ediacaran Gaskiers glaciation on the West African Craton (WAC). Existing Ediacaran paleomagnetic data from the WAC are sparse and allow different interpretations regarding paleolatitude of this glaciation. The latter is finally discussed vis-a-vis potential rapid true polar wander events and the possibility that the Gaskiers glaciation was more global in extent than hitherto assumed and might even have brought Earth close to a true pan-glacial state.

The cumulative effect of repeated extensive glaciations represents a poorly constrained component in the understanding of landscape evolution in mid-latitude mountain ranges such as the Alps. Timing, extent, and paleo-climatic conditions of these glaciations are generally poorly understood due to the often-fragmentary character of terrestrial Quaternary records. In this context, the sedimentary infills of subglacial basins may serve as important archives to complement the Quaternary stratigraphy over several glacial--interglacial cycles. In this study, sedimentary facies, valley-fill architecture, and luminescence dating are used to describe nine erosional and depositional cycles (Formations A--I) in the Lower Glatt valley, northern Switzerland. These cycles can be related to the `Birrfeld' Glaciation (~ MIS2), the `Beringen' Glaciation (~ MIS6), and up to three earlier Middle Pleistocene glaciations that can be tentatively correlated to the regional glaciation history. Evidence suggests that deep bedrock trough incision and/or partial re-excavation last occurred mainly during the `Beringen' and `Habsburg' Glaciations. Second-order, 'inlaid' glacial basins document separate glacier re-advances during the Beringen Glaciation. The arrangement of subglacial basins in the Glatt valley with different sub-parallel or bifurcating bedrock troughs, re-excavated segments, and inlaid basins document changes in the magnitude and the spatial focus of subglacial erosion over time. The Glatt valley may thus serve as a key example for the glacial landscape evolution in many other repeatedly glaciated forelands.

{OSL} and {IRSL} dating are applied to samples from a 152 m-long drill core to constrain the timing of three glaciolacustrine depositional periods within the infill of an overdeepened bedrock trough in the Lower Glatt valley, N Switzerland. The characterisation of the dose-response suggests that the polymineral {IRSL50} and pIRIR180/225 signals are close to saturation, while quartz {OSL} ages are within the range of reliable dating. The demarcation of the upper quartz {OSL} dating limit, however, remains challenging. Dose-recovery tests performed with long storage periods were used to investigate the reliability of the high region of the dose-response curve. They suggest an upper limit for reliable dating of ~400 Gy for these samples, which was considerably lower than the commonly used 2D0 criterion. Lifetimes were calculated for the quartz {OSL} and the thermal stability of the signal is not considered as problematic for the determined ages. Allowing for a contribution from inherited dose due to partial bleaching, places the infill of the overdeepened valley within the penultimate glacial cycle (MIS6).

To investigate the history of the Aare Glacier and its overdeepened valley, a high-resolution multibeam bathymetric dataset and a 2D multi-channel reflection seismic dataset were acquired on perialpine Lake Thun (Switzerland). The overdeepened basin was formed by a combination of tectonically predefined weak zones and glacial erosion during several glacial cycles. In the deepest region of the basin, top of bedrock lies at ∼200 m below sea level, implying more than 750 m of overdeepening with respect to the current fluvial base level (i.e. lake level). Seismic stratigraphic analysis reveals the evolution of the basin and indicates a subaquatic moraine complex marked by high-amplitude reflections below the outermost edge of a morphologically distinct platform in the southeastern part of the lake. This stack of seven subaquatic terminal moraine crests was created by a fluctuating, “quasi-stagnant” grounded Aare Glacier during its overall recessional phase. Single packages of overridden moraine crests are seismically distuinguishable, which show a transition downstream into prograding clinoforms with foresets at the ice-distal slope. The succession of subaquatic glacial sequences (foresets and adjacent bottomsets) represent one fifth of the entire sedimentary thickness. Exact time constraints concerning the deglacial history of the Aare Glacier are very sparse. However, existing 10Be exposure ages from the accumulation area of the Aare Glacier and radiocarbon ages from a Late-Glacial lake close to the outlet of Lake Thun indicate that the formation of the subaquatic moraine complex and the associated sedimentary infill must have occurred in less than 1000 years, implying high sedimentation rates and rapid disintegration of the glacier. These new data improve our comprehension of the landforms associated with the ice-contact zone in water, the facies architecture of the sub- to proglacial units, the related depositional processes, and thus the retreat mechanisms of the Aare Glacier.

Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating was applied to proglacial deposits from the Klettgau Valley in northern Switzerland. This area is understood to record several phases of glaciation prior to the Last Interglacial and the aim was to provide an independent chronology for the different sedimentary units to better understand the complex depositional history of the region. This time range requires careful assessment of the reliability of the luminescence protocols applied and the resulting ages. Equivalent doses for fine and coarse grain quartz remained below 300 Gy, while dose response curves for both fractions continued to display growth above 500 Gy. Dose recovery tests confirmed the ability of the single aliquot regenerative (SAR) protocol to recover laboratory doses of a similar size to burial doses, and isothermal decay measurements confirmed the stability of the quartz signal. Having passed rigorous testing criteria, quartz OSL ages of up to 200 ka were considered reliable but significantly underestimated expected ages and prompt a reconsideration of earlier interpretations of the stratigraphy for this site. Rather than representing three separate glaciations, quartz luminescence ages instead suggest that these deposits record up to four independent ice advances during Marine Isotope Stage 6. For both single grain and single aliquot feldspar dating, it was not possible to separate the conflicting influences of anomalous fading and partial bleaching. However, uncorrected feldspar Central Age Model ages were found to be in reasonable agreement with quartz age estimates, and suggest that they may still offer useful additional information in this region

Extensive glaciers repeatedly occupied the northern Alpine Foreland during the Pleistocene and left a strongly glacially overprinted low slope landscape. Only few islands appeared as nunataks standing above the surface of the large piedmont glacier lobes. These nunatak areas kept their original shape, manifested in steep catchments with mean slopes up to 33 . Even though not glaciated, these catchments where significantly affected by base-level changes occurring as a consequence of phases of glacier advances and retreats. Both domains, the glacially eroded and non-eroded, are therefore prone to different mechanisms and time-scales of fluvial and colluvial re-adjustment. In this study we investigate these effects by exploring the spatial distribution and magnitude of denudation in the Hornli region of the eastern Swiss Alpine Foreland in the present Interglacial. The area represents both domains in a relatively small area with largely uniform tectonic, lithologic and climatic conditions. The differences in Holocene andscape evolution are investigated using topographic analyses and catchment-averaged denudation rates derived from 10Be concentrations in fluvial quartz sand. We find that in formerly non-glaciated, fluvially dominated catchments close hillslope-channel coupling prevails and that these catchments yield high average denudation rates of 350 mm/ka. Glacially overprinted catchments yielded catchment-wide denudation rates an order of magnitude lower. These low denudation rates are hypothesized to be the consequence of both (i) a dominance of slow hillslope processes and (ii) admixture of high concentration, pre-LGM glacial sediment. This suggests that a) a careful field investigation must accompany the denudation rate studies and b) that the concept of area-weighted cosmogenic nuclide denudation rates must be considered in light of the predominant catchment processes.

The sedimentary infill of subglacially eroded bedrock troughs in the Alps are underexplored archives for the timing, extent and character of Pleistocene glaciations but may contain excellent records of the Quaternary landscape evolution over several glacial-interglacial cycles. The onset of sedimentation in these bedrock troughs is often reflected by diamicts and gravels directly overlying bedrock in the deepest basin segments. Subglacial or proglacial depositional environments have been proposed for these coarse-grained basal units but their characteristics and origin remain controversial. This article presents results from drill cores that recovered a coarse-grained basal unit in a major buried bedrock-trough system in the Lower Glatt Valley, northern Switzerland. The excellent core recovery allowed a detailed study combining macroscopic, microscopic and geochemical methods and gives unprecedented insights into the transition from erosion to deposition in overdeepened bedrock troughs. These results show that the basal infill comprises diamicts, interpreted as subglacial tills, separated by thin sorted interbeds, originating from subglacial cavity deposition. The stacking may thus represent repeated switching between a coupled and decoupled ice-bed-interface indicating an ever-transforming mosaic of subglacial bed conditions. Decoupling in response to high basal water pressures is probably promoted by the confined subglacial hydraulic conditions resulting from the bedrock acting as aquitard, the narrow reverse sloping outlet and a large catchment area. While stratigraphic and lithological evidence suggests that erosion and the onset of basal sedimentation occurred during the same glaciation, different scenarios for the relative timing of infilling in relation to formation and glaciation of the bedrock trough are discussed. Overlying deltaic and glaciolacustrine sediments suggest deposition during subsequent deglaciation of the bedrock trough. The basal sediment characteristics are in agreement with previous reports in hydrogeological and seismic exploration and suggest the occurrence of similar basal successions in other subglacially overdeepened basin in the Alps and elsewhere.

The Alps and the Alpine foreland have been shaped by repeated glaciations during Quaternary glacial-interglacial cycles. Extent, timing and impact on landscape evolution of these glaciations are, however, poorly constrained due to the fragmentary character of terrestrial archives. In this context, the sedimentary infills of subglacially eroded, ‘overdeepened’, basins may serve as important archives to complement the Quaternary stratigraphy over several glacial-interglacial cycles. In this thesis, the infills of deep subglacial basins in the Lower Glatt valley (N Switzerland) are explored to better constrain the Middle- to Late Pleistocene environmental change. Five drill cores gave direct insight into to the up to ~200 m thick valley fill at the study site and allowed for detailed analysis of sedimentary facies, age and architecture of the basin fills. A first focus is set on the sedimentology of coarse-grained diamicts with sorted interbeds overlying bedrock in the trough center, which mark the onset of deposition in many glacial bedrock troughs. Evidence from macro- and microsedimentology suggests that these sediments are emplaced subglacially and reflect deposition, reworking and deformation in response to repeated coupling and decoupling of the ice-bed interface promoted by high basal water pressures. Overlying these subglacial sediments, large volumes of sandy glacio-deltaic, fine-grained glacio-lacustrine and lacustrine sediments document sedimentation during glacier retreat from the basins. On these thick valley fill sequences the applicability and reliability of luminescence dating is investigated in a second step on the basis of experiments with several different luminescence signals, protocols and experiments to assess the signal stability. The valley fill of the Lower Glatt valley is then grouped into nine depositional cycles (Formations A-I), which are related to the Birrfeld Glaciation (~MIS2), the Beringen Glaciation (~MIS6), and up to three earlier Middle Pleistocene glaciations, tentatively correlated to the Hagenholz, Habsburg, and Mohlin Glaciations, according to the regional glaciation history. The complex bedrock geometry and valley fill architecture are shown to be the result of multiple erosion and infilling cycles and reflect the interplay of subglacial erosion, glacial to lacustrine infilling of overdeepened basins, and fluvial down-cutting and aggradation in the non-overdeepened valley fill. Evidence suggests that in the study area deep bedrock incision, and/or partial re-excavation, occurred mainly during the Beringen and Hagenholz Glaciation, while older structures may have existed. Together with the observation of minor, ‘inlaid’ glacial basins, dynamic changes in the magnitude and focus of subglacial erosion over time are documented.
