A gestação é um período muito importante no desenvolvimento fetal no qual é preciso sempre se atentar a qualquer problema que a fêmea ou os conceptos possam desenvolver. Um destes pode ocorrer no final do período gestacional, durante o parto. Algumas cadelas e gatas têm dificuldades para realizar o parto normal, seja por distocia materna ou fetal. A partir disso, o animal pode correr sérios riscos, juntamente com sua prole, que está prestes a nascer. Para evitar a morte dos animais devido a distocia, recomenda-se a realização do acompanhamento gestacional por meio de exames ultrassonográficos e radiográficos. O ultrassom auxilia na predição estimada da data do parto enquanto o raio-x verifica a possibilidade de um parto distócico. O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar a acurácia desses exames imagiológicos nos acompanhamentos gestacionais realizados entre anos de 2014 a 2019 no Hospital Veterinário da instituição. Com as devidas análises, visualizou-se que ambos os exames possuem alta taxa de acerto quanto às suas predições. Além disso, também se concluiu a existência de variáveis que afetam essa acurácia. Vale ressaltar que ainda são necessários estudos com uma amostra maior para uma melhor constatação, visando também a verificação das melhores datas para se fazer os exames. Recomenda-se a realização destes estudos com maior especificidade, verificando diferenças entre raças, espécies e tipos de crânio. Este estudo retrospectivo é de suma importância para orientação da conduta dos médicos veterinários quanto à necessidade de realização de acompanhamentos gestacionais, visando a diminuição dos riscos inerentes ao parto.

The objective of this report is to describe the clinical, histological and surgical treatment of a case diagnosed as congenital melanocytoma, located in perivulvar region in a half-breed cow (zebu).This neoplasia is considered rare in cattle, of variable histological classification and hard to predict biological behavior.

In humans, it is now well documented that rising paternal age is correlated with decreased sperm DNA integrity and embryonic developmental failures. On the other side of the coin, it is also reported that very young fathers such as teenagers carry an increased risk of adverse birth outcomes. These observations suggest that, at least in humans, there is an age window for optimal sperm DNA integrity. In bovine, little is known about sperm DNA quality in young bulls and how it evolves with age. This study aimed to fill in this gap as it may be of importance for the bovine industry to know when exactly a bull is an optimal performer for reproductive programs.Forty Nellore bulls were divided into three age groups: 1.8 to 2 years - young bulls; 3.5 to 7 years - adult bulls; and 8 to 14.3 years - aged bulls. Three ejaculates were collected from each bull, cryopreserved and evaluated for various parameters including: computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA), plasma membrane and acrosome integrity, mitochondrial potential, sperm nuclear protamination, DNA oxidative damage, and Sperm Chromatin Structure Assay (SCSA).We report here that young bulls presented superior values for motility, plasma and acrosomal membrane integrity, and high mitochondrial potential. However, they also presented higher values for sperm morphological abnormalities compared to adult and aged animal groups (These results indicate that young bulls spermatozoa best survived the freezing procedure, followed by adult and aged bulls. However, young and aged bulls were found to be more susceptible to DNA damage, respectively caused by protamine deficiency and oxidation. Therefore, although young bulls have correct semen parameters according to classical evaluation, our results indicate that they may show some structural nuclear immaturity.Chez l’homme, de nombreuses données indiquent maintenant que l’avancée de l’âge du père est associée à une réduction de l’intégrité de l’ADN des spermatozoïdes et aux échecs de développement embryonnaire. D’un autre côté, il est aussi rapporté que les jeunes pères, tels les adolescents, sont porteurs d’un risque accru d’issue défavorable de la grossesse. Ces observations suggèrent que, au moins chez l’humain, il existe une tranche d’âge dans laquelle l’intégrité de l’ADN des spermatozoïdes est optimale. Chez les bovins, on dispose de peu de connaissances sur la qualité de l’ADN des spermatozoïdes des jeunes taureaux et sur son mode d’évolution avec l’âge. La présente étude a pour but de combler ce manque car il peut être important, pour l’industrie bovine, de savoir à quelle période précise un taureau est un reproducteur optimal pour les programmes de reproduction.Quarante taureaux Nellore ont été répartis en trois groupes d’âge: 1, 8 à 2 ans – jeunes taureaux; 3,5 à 7 ans – taureaux adultes; et 8 à 14,3 ans – taureaux âgés. Trois éjaculats ont été collectés par taureau, cryopréservés et évalués pour différents paramètres incluant l’analyse assistée du sperme par ordinateur (CASA), l’intégrité des membranes plasmique et acrosomique, le potentiel mitochondrial, la protamination du noyau, l’altération oxydative de l’ADN et l’évaluation de la structure de la chromatine du noyau du spermatozoïde (SCSA).Nous rapportons ici que les jeunes taureaux présentent des valeurs supérieures de la mobilité des spermatozoïdes et de l’intégrité des membranes plasmique et acrosomique, ainsi qu’un potentiel mitochondrial élevé. Cependant, les jeunes taureaux présentent aussi des valeurs plus élevées d’anomalies morphologiques des spermatozoïdes que celles des groupes adulte et âgé (Ces résultats indiquent que les spermatozoïdes des jeunes taureaux survivent le mieux au processus de congélation, suivis par les adultes puis les âgés. Toutefois, les jeunes taureaux et les âgés sont plus susceptibles d’avoir une altération de l’ADN, causée respectivement par une protamination déficiente et une oxydation. Par conséquent, bien que les jeunes taureaux aient des paramètres spermatiques corrects à l’évaluation classique, nos résultats indiquent que leurs spermatozoïdes peuvent présenter un certain degré d’immaturité structurale nucléaire.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2018-10-01 When using assisted reproductive technologies, there is seldom an evaluation of DNA integrity during sperm analysis, which is an important variable for proper embryo development. The toluidine blue staining technique allows the simultaneous evaluation of sperm chromatin and sperm head dimensions. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the applicability of the toluidine blue staining method for analyzing DNA abnormalities in epididymal sperm (from the caput, corpus, and cauda) of cats and to investigate the correlations among DNA condensation, morphology, and sperm head dimensions. The DNA alteration indexes were obtained using the toluidine blue and acridine orange techniques, and comparisons of these indexes indicated there was a 65.4% (r = 0.654; P < 0.001) correlation. The sperm from the cauda had greater chromatin stability (97.9%) than the sperm from the epididymal head (92.1%; P = 0.0023). There, however, was no difference in chromatin stability between sperm obtained from the corpus and cauda regions, indicating that these sperm were already mature. The sperm head dimension was correlated with chromatin decondensation, and the sperm head size decreased as the sperm were transported through the three epididymal regions (P < 0.0001). In addition, the percentage of sperm that were deficient in chromatin condensation decreased as the sperm were transported through the epididymal caput, corpus and cauda (26.4, 15.7, and 3.4%, respectively; P < 0.0001). Thus, the sperm head size predicts the quality of chromatin condensation in sperm cells. For this purpose, 40 Nellore bulls were divided into three age groups: Young, aged 1.8–2 years (n = 9); Adult, aged 3.5–7.0 years (n = 19); and Seniors, aged 8.0–14.3 years (n = 12). Three ejaculates were collected from each bull, cryopreserved and evaluated for various parameters including membrane integrity, mitochondrial potential (FITC-PSA and JC1), lipid peroxidation (C-11BODIPY 581 / 591) and oxidative DNA damage (8OHdG) using flow cytometry. The thawed semen of senior bulls was characterized by a low percentage of motile sperm (33.7 ± 6.1%), higher damage to the plasma and acrosomal membrane (37.5 ± 9.8%), and low mitochondrial potential (29.1 ± 13.8%), as well as higher percentages of peroxidated cells (53.6 ± 12.2%) and DNA damage (44.1 ± 11.0%; P < 0.05). Lipid peroxidation was negatively correlated with motility (r = −0.35, P < 0.0002), average mitochondrial potential (r = −0.42; P < 0.0001) and showed a positive correlation with membrane injury and oxidative DNA damage (r = 039; P = 0.0003). Young bulls presented superior thawed sperm quality, possibly due to greater resistance to oxidative stress and, consequently, to cryopreservation. In conclusion, the sperm quality of bull semen declines with advancing age and is strongly associated with increased oxidative damage to both the plasma membrane and DNA. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2017-01-01 The aim of this study was to evaluate the chromatin packing and sperm head morphometry of cryopreserved semen of Nelore bulls (Bos taurus indicus) of different ages. Furthermore, the influence of the degree of chromatin compaction on in vitro embryo production (IVP) was investigated. Forty bulls were divided into three groups: young (1.8–2 years), adult (3.5–7 years), and senile (8–14.3 years). The ejaculates were frozen according to standards established by the Artificial Insemination Center located in the Southeast of Brazil. Toluidine blue staining was used for simultaneous evaluation of the sperm chromatin and sperm head morphometry. Chromomycin A3 (CMA3) was applied to analyze sperm protamination and IVP for embryonic development. Spermatozoa of young bulls presented higher values for area (A, pixels), perimeter (P, pixels), and width (W, pixels) compared to adults and senile (young: A = 1848.5 ± 119.79, P = 10.23 ± 0.29, and W = 1.95 ± 0.1; adults: A = 1672.9 ± 104.46, P = 9.86 ± 0.33, and W = 1.81 ± 0.06; senile: A = 1723.1 ± 124.41, P = 9.97 ± 0.33, and W = 1.83 ± 0.09; P < 0.0001) and showed higher protamination deficiency when analyzed by CMA3 (young: 1.57 ± 0.76; adults: 1.09 ± 0.63, and senile: 0.90 ± 0.59; P < 0.05). Likewise, variables of sperm head size (A, P, and W) and protamination assessed by CMA3 showed negative correlation with age and positive correlation with ellipticity, evaluated by toluidine blue method (P < 0.05). Sperm head area was larger in spermatozoa presenting chromatin instabilities than spermatozoa without chromatin alteration (P < 0.0001). There was no difference in IVP when using semen with larger or smaller portions of spermatozoa with chromatin instabilities, indicating that the proportion of sperm with abnormal chromatin compaction (4%–16.15%) did not interfere with early embryonic development. From our results, it can be concluded that sperm of young Nelore bulls have larger heads compared to adults and senile due to reduced protamine content when evaluated by CMA3 and higher proportion of major sperm defects assessed by differential interference contrast microscopy. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2018-01-01 Background: In humans and bitchs the age is another factor that may affect the size of ovarian structures, verifying alterations in the quality of the pool and size of follicular structures, which can compromise the use of these structures for in vitro maturation. There are no reports correlating the morphometric characteristics of the follicles and ovarian apoptosis at different ages in cats. The aim of this study was to evaluate the histomorphometric parameters of follicular growth and the relationship with the occurrence of apoptosis in ovarian tissue of young, adult and senile queens. Materials, Methods & Results: Eighteen domestic queens, multiparous, of different breeds and age groups were used in this study and divided into three groups according to their ages: five months to one year - young; (7.8 ± 1.0 months); one to six years - adults (2.8 ± 0.5 years); and more than six years - senile (8.0 ± 0.9 years). Vaginal cytology was performed in order to characterize the estrous phase associated with plasma concentrations of progesterone. The morphology and percentage of the vaginal epithelium cells were evaluated and queens were classified into estrous and non-estrus and plasma concentrations of progesterone were determined. Ovarian samples were collected after ovariohysterectomy to routine histological processin and all follicles were counted and categorized into two groups, non-atresic and atresic. The mean follicular and oocyte diameters were calculated between the measurement of the largest diameter and perpendicular diameter. The relationship between follicle and oocyte were determined using the measurements of diameter, area and perimeter. The apoptotic cells were detected and cells were considered positive when TUNEL reaction was detected. The morphometric index of 1039 follicles were evaluated. Primordial follicles in young animals showed larger diameter, follicular area and perimeter than the structures of adult queens, as well as the unilaminar primary follicles of the same group were larger compared with senile animals (P < 0.05). Comparing adult and younger queens, the first showed a significant decrease of oocyte diameter in primary and unilaminar primary follicles, as well as oocyte area and perimeter (P < 0.05). The values for follicular diameter, oocyte area and perimeter for multilaminar primary, secondary and pre-ovulatory structures did not present statistical differences between the groups (P > 0.05). For the pre-ovulatory follicles there was no positive correlation between the oocyte growths regarding the follicles (P > 0.05). Only in senile animals positive markers for apoptosis were identified in nuclei of primordial follicles. No significant differences concerning the number of follicles and Tunel positive cells were observed between groups (P > 0.05). Discussion: Considering the importance of this study for greater knowledge in the basic aspects for reproductive biotechnologies, we verified that secondary follicles showed the largest diameters and younger animals the largest values for diameter, area and perimeter, suggesting that this age group could be ideal for the use and manipulation of oocytes. The process of follicular atresia is characterized by the occurrence of apoptosis, or programmed cell death when the organism begins to efficiently eliminate dysfunctional cells. The study of follicular apoptosis in small animals, especially in cats, is very important for the development of reproduction biotechnologies. Phenomenon of apoptosis showed no relationship with age in queens, occurring in a physiological, continuous and proportionate manner considering the number of non-dominant follicles involved in each estrous cycle. Effects of a short-term hyper- and hypoprolactinaemia on serum concentrations of LH, testosterone and semen quality in six male Beagles were investigated. Blood samples were collected at 3-day intervals for 12 weeks. The time span was divided into five 3-week periods: pre-treatment, metoclopramide (MCP) treatment (0.2 mg/kg orally three times daily), cabergoline (CAB) treatment (5 microg/kg orally once daily), post-treatment 1 and post-treatment 2. In the latter, only semen characteristics were evaluated. Semen parameters were analyzed once per week during the whole 15-week investigation time. At the end of each period, the effects of a single intravenous injection of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH; 10 microg/kg) on the secretion of prolactin (PRL), LH, testosterone, thyroid-stimulating hormone and thyroxine (T4) were investigated. Pre-treatment serum PRL concentration increased under MCP (p < 0.05), followed by a decrease under CAB administration (p < 0.05). Luteinizing hormone and testosterone concentrations were not affected. Except for straight-line sperm velocity, semen quality did not differ between collection periods. A single iv TRH injection induced a significant PRL increase at 20 min in all experimental periods except during CAB treatment. Luteinizing hormone and testosterone did not show clear TRH-related changes. Basic T4 levels were significantly reduced after CAB treatment (p < 0.05). The results of the present study demonstrate that MCP-induced short-term hyperprolactinaemia in male beagles does not seriously affect the hypothalamo-pituitary axis and semen quality.

This report addresses an atypical transmissible venereal tumour in an 8-year-old bitch that was pluriparous and seropositive for leishmaniasis. There were ascites and a serosanguineous discharge from the vulva, but no lesions on the external genital mucosa. An aspirate of the peritoneal fluid showed mononuclear round cells characteristic of transmissible venereal tumour (TVT). Exploratory laparotomy revealed light red, granulomatous structures in the peritoneum, omentum, spleen, liver and uterine horns. Cytological and histopathological tests confirmed the diagnosis of intra-abdominal TVT. Dissemination of the TVT to several organs inside the abdominal cavity probably resulted from immunosuppression caused by leishmaniasis, which favoured the presence and aggressiveness of TVT.

Estudou-se o fenômeno da involução uterina eutócica, em 16 fêmeas divididas aleatoriamente em dois grupos de oito animais cada, em que o grupo 1 (G1) recebeu tratamento com estimulação elétrica (eletroacupuntura) da agulha nos pontos BP6, F3, Bai Hui, VC1, B23 e B26, e o grupo 2 (G2), grupo controle, recebeu tratamento em pontos Sham (pontos falsos). O acompanhamento do fenômeno da involução uterina foi realizado por ultrassonografia convencional, nos dias 0 (dia do parto), 1, 3, 7 e 14 pós-parto. Utilizou-se a avaliação estatística pelo método SAS, com o propósito de comparar os grupos. Os resultados dos exames ultrassonográficos (média e desvios padrões em centímetros) para o período próprio de observação foram, respectivamente: G1: 0,30 ± 0,01 (P); 2,08 ± 0,21 (LU); 4,13 ± 0,23 (DU) e G2: 0,31 ± 0,01 (P); 1,82 ± 0,09 (LU); 3,92 ± 0,11 (DU). Pôde-se concluir que a eletroacupuntura apresentou efeitos sobre o tônus uterino (duradouros e uniformes ao final do tratamento). A eletroacupuntura infere positivamente no tônus uterino, corroborando no auxílio da prevenção de transtornos puerperais. The aim of this study was to evaluate, by means of ultrasound exam, acupuncture effects on uterine involution during the postpartum period in bitches with electroacupuncture. The phenomenon of eutocic uterine involution was studied in 16 bitches, randomly divided into two groups of eight animals each. Group 1 (G1) was treated with electric stimulation (electroacupuncture) of the needle at the points SP6, L3, Bai Hui, TB1, B23, B26, and group 2 (G2), the control group, received treatment in Sham points (placebo points), also with electrical stimuli. The monitoring of the phenomenon of uterine involution was performed by ultrasonography on days 0 (partum), 1, 3, 7 and 14 postpartum. We used SAS statistical analysis method, in order to compare the groups. The results of ultrasound examinations (mean and standard deviations in cm) for the period of observation were as follows: G1: 0.30 ± 0.01 (P), 2.08 ± 0.21 (LU), 4.13 ± 0.23 (DU) and G2: 0.31 ± 0.01 (P) 1.82 ± 0.09 (LU), 3.92 ± 0.11 (DU). We concluded that electroacupuncture affected uterine tone (lasting and uniform at the end of treatment). O ejaculado de quatro touros foi dividido em duas partes iguais, uma submetida ao diluidor Tris e gema de ovo (A) e outra ao diluidor à base de lecitina de soja (Andromed®) (B). No experimento I, cinco palhetas dos diluidores A e B de cada touro foram descongeladas e avaliadas quanto à motilidade, vigor, concentração, morfologia espermática e teste de termor-resistência lento. Foram feitas, ainda, avaliação da integridade de membranas, por meio da associação das sondas iodeto de propídio, isotiocionato de fluoresceína - Pisum sativum e carbocianina catiônica lipofílica, e avaliação funcional da membrana plasmática com teste hiposmótico. A avaliação da integridade da cromatina foi realizada pelo método de coloração com laranja de acridina. No experimento II, o sêmen com os diferentes diluidores foi utilizado na fecundação in vitro, sendo observadas taxas de clivagem e desenvolvimento embrionário in vitro. em relação aos resultados obtidos, apenas a porcentagem de espermatozoides no sêmen congelado foi discretamente maior com o diluidor A, concluindo-se que o diluidor composto por lecitina de soja pode substituir o composto por Tris e gema de ovo, respeitando-se as variações individuais de cada touro utilizado no presente experimento. The goal of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of egg yolk compared with a soybean lecithin-based extender on morphologic and functional characteristics of frozen bovine semen. The ejaculate of four bulls was divided into two equal parts, one diluted with egg-yolk-Tris extender (A) and the other with a soy-lecithin based extender (Andromed®) (B). In experiment I, five straws of extender A and B from each bull were thawed and assessed regarding motility (subjective and computerized analysis), vigor, concentration, sperm morphology and slow thermoresistance (STR), evaluation of membrane integrity through association of propidium iodite probes (PI), fluorescein isotiocianate - Pisum sativum (FITC-PSA) and lipophilic cationic carbocyanine (JC-1) and functional evaluation of the plasmatic membrane through Hyposmotic Swelling Test (HOST). An evaluation of chromatin integrity was performed with the acridine orange staining procedure. In experiment II, the frozen semen with different extenders was used for in vitro fertilization (IVF), analyzing cleavage rates and in vitro embryo development. No statistical difference between extenders was identified, suggesting that the soy lecithin extender may substitute egg-yolk-Tris extender, considering the individual variations of each bull used in this experiment. This study evaluated the effect of higher percentages of PCDs on the quality of frozen-thawed bovine semen, embryo production and early embryo development.Methods: Three ejaculates from each of five (group 1: PCD = 24%) were analysed. Semen samples were examined for: post-thaw motility, vigour of movement, concentration, sperm morphology, slow thermoresistance test (STT), membrane integrity, acrosome status, mitochondrial function using fluorescent probes association (FITC-PSA, PI and JC-1) and sperm chromatin integrity using acridine orange assay. Two bulls from group 2, with 28.5% and 48.5% PCD, respectively, and three bulls from the control group, each with 0% PCD, were selected for IVF (in vitro fertilisation).Results: Semen analyses revealed a significant correlation (P < 0.01) between increased rates of PCD and sperm quality traits. Nevertheless, no differences were observed in sperm motility and vigour either before or after the STT or in the percentage of intact acrosomes (analysed by differential interference contrast microscopy (DIC) after STT), but membrane integrity, acrosome status (evaluated with FITC-PSA staining method after thawing) and mitochondrial function were reduced, when compared with group 1 (P < 0.05). The higher incidence of PCD was positively correlated to chromatin damage, especially after three hours of incubation at 37 degrees C. IVF showed similar results for bull C2 (group 1, control) and bull P2 (group 2, group with higher PCDs).Conclusion: Higher PCD levels influenced spermatozoa quality traits. IVF and embryo development data showed that cleavage, blastocyst formation and blastocyst hatching may have been influenced by the interaction of morphology traits and individual bull effects. MÉTODOS: Dezoito gatos adultos, distribuídos em três grupos de 6 animais cada, foram submetidos a extração do canino mandibular direito ou esquerdo. No grupo 1, controle, o alvéolo foi deixado vazio. No grupo 2, o alvéolo foi preenchido com osso esponjoso autógeno do osso ilíaco e no grupo 3, com raspa de osso cortical do osso ilíaco. Os animais foram submetidos à eutanásia 6 semanas após a cirurgia. RESULTADOS: Nas radiografias realizadas no pós-operatório imediato na projeção ventrodorsal observou-se uma área de radiolucência correspondente ao local da alveolectomia e extração dentária. Diminuição da radiolucência foi verificada nas radiografias realizadas seis semanas após a cirurgia. Nos cortes histológicos verificou-se a presença de trabéculas ósseas. A porcentagem de tecido ósseo esponjoso presente nos alvéolos dentais foi quantificada por exames histométricos. Não houve diferença estatisticamente significante entre os grupos (Teste de Kruskal-Wallis p > 0.05) (grupo 1: 52,54 ± 15,4; grupo 2: 50,51 ± 5,01; grupo 3: 51,85 ± 9,52). CONCLUSÃO: Os alvéolos dentais de gatos preenchidos com osso esponjoso autógeno ou raspa de osso cortical autógeno apresentaram regeneração óssea similar àquela observada no grupo controle, após um período de observação de seis semanas. PURPOSE: To evaluate bone healing in the extraction socket of the feline mandibular canine tooth after grafting. METHODS: Eighteen adult cats were submitted to unilateral extraction of mandibular canine tooth and divided into three groups. In group 1 (n=6), control, the extraction socket was left empty. In group 2 (n=6), the extraction socket was filled with autogenous cancelous bone from the iliac crest and in group 3 (n=6), with cortical bone chips from the iliac crest. Cats were euthanized at 6 weeks postoperative. RESULTS: Immediate postoperative radiographs in dorsoventral view showed a radiolucent area at the extraction wound. A decreased radiolucency was observed on the radiographs taken at 6 weeks postoperative. Histological examination showed formation of woven bone within the extraction socket. The percentage of newly formed bone within the extraction socket, measured by the histometry, showed no statistically significant difference among the values of the three groups (Kruskal-Wallis'test p>0.05) (group 1: 52.54 ± 15.46, group 2: 50.51 ± 5.01, group 3: 51.85 ± 9.52). CONCLUSION: The bone regeneration observed in the extraction sockets filled with autogenous cancellous bone or autogenous cortical bone chips was similar to that observed in the control sites, given an observation period of 6 weeks after extraction of the mandibular canine tooth. MÉTODOS: Foram utilizados 12 gatos adultos divididos em dois grupos de seis animais cada. em uma das hemimandíbulas foi criado um defeito segmentar de 4mm, preenchido com enxerto autógeno do osso ilíaco. A hemimandíbula operada foi fixada com uma miniplaca 1.5 de titânio. No grupo 1, o defeito foi realizado caudalmente ao 1º molar e no grupo 2, entre o 4º pré-molar e 1º molar, com extração do 1º molar. A alimentação oral foi reiniciada 24 horas após a cirurgia. Os animais foram submetidos à eutanásia 20 semanas após a cirurgia. RESULTADOS: As radiografias realizadas 20 semanas após a cirurgia sugeriram a incorporação do enxerto. O exame macroscópico confirmou redução cirúrgica satisfatória e união óssea das hemimandibulas operadas. Os exames histológicos demonstraram a presença de tecido ósseo esponjoso nos locais de transição do enxerto com o osso da mandíbula. Os exames histométricos demonstraram que não houve diferença estatisticamente significante nos valores observados de porcentagem de tecido ósseo nas áreas de incorporação do enxerto das hemimandíbulas operadas dos gatos do grupo 1 (64,48 ± 4,51) e grupo 2 (71,69 ± 14,47) (Teste de Mann-Whitney p=0,294). CONCLUSÃO: Os resultados deste experimento permitiram concluir que o uso de miniplacas na fixação de mandíbulas de gatos com defeitos segmentares preenchidos com osso autógeno garante os principais objetivos no tratamento de fraturas da mandíbula: união óssea, oclusão dentária normal e alimentação oral imediata. PURPOSE: To evaluate the use of maxillofacial miniplate 1.5 in the repair of segmental mandibular defects filled with autogenous bone in cats. METHODS: Twelve adult cats were divided into two groups. A segmental defect of 4mm was created in one of the hemimandibles and filled with autogenous iliac crest bone graft. The operated hemimandible was fixed with a 1.5mm titanium miniplate. In group 1 (n=6), the defect was performed in the body of the mandible, behind the 1st molar. In group 2 (n=6), the defect was performed between the 4nd premolar and 1st molar, with extraction of the 1st molar. Oral alimentation was reinitiated 24 hours after surgery. Cats were euthanized at 20 weeks postoperative. RESULTS: Incorporation of the graft was suggested by the radiographs taken 20 weeks after surgery. Macroscopic examination confirmed alignment and bone union of operated hemimandibles. Histological examination showed formation of woven bone in rostral and caudal mandible/graft interfaces. The percentage of bone tissue at these areas was measured by the histometry. There was no statistically significant difference between the values of group 1(64.48 ± 4.51) and group 2 (71.69 ± 14.47) (Mann-Whitney's test p= 0.294). CONCLUSION: The use of miniplate 1.5 for the fixation of mandibular defects filled with autogenous bone in cats provided the main goals in the treatment of mandibular fractures: bone union, normal dental occlusion and immediate return to oral alimentation. Métodos: Foram utilizados 12 gatos adultos divididos em dois grupos de seis animais cada. No grupo 1, a osteotomia foi realizada caudalmente ao 1º molar e no grupo 2, entre o 4º pré-molar e 1º molar. A osteotomia foi fixada com uma miniplaca 1.5 de titânio. A alimentação oral foi reiniciada 24 horas após a cirurgia. Os animais foram submetidos a eutanásia 12 semanas após a cirurgia. Resultados: A osteotomia pode ser notada como uma linha de radiolucência nas radiografias realizadas uma semana após a cirurgia. Essa linha de radiolucência não foi mais vista nas radiografias realizadas 12 semanas após a cirurgia. No exame macroscópico a hemimandíbula operada apresentava conformação semelhante à hemimandíbula contralateral. A união óssea pode ser confirmada por meio dos exames histológicos que demonstraram a presença de tecido ósseo esponjoso no local da osteotomia. Os exames histométricos demonstraram que não houve diferença estatisticamente significante nos valores observados de porcentagem de tecido ósseo na área de osteotomia das hemimandíbulas operadas dos gatos do grupo 1 (75,07 ± 5.99) e grupo 2 (74,76 ±8,56) (Teste de Mann-Whitney p=0,469). Conclusão: Os resultados deste experimento permitiram concluir que a fixação de osteotomias com miniplacas 1.5 em gatos garante os principais objetivos no tratamento de fraturas da mandíbula: união óssea, oclusão dentária normal e alimentação oral imediata. As amostras foram colhidas uma vez por semana e avaliadas quanto ao volume, concentração, motilidade, vigor, morfologia espermática, integridade da cromatina, avaliação simultânea da integridade da membrana plasmática, acrossoma e potencial mitocondrial. Concomitantemente foram dosadas a proteína total do plasma seminal e sanguíneo. A leishmaniose visceral causou aumento dos defeitos maiores e menores nos espermatozoides dos animais acometidos pelo estágio moderado a severo da doença. em estágios mais avançados da enfermidade, a integridade das membranas acrossomal e plasmática foi afetada negativamente. Não foi possível estabelecer um critério quanto à avaliação do potencial mitocondrial. A incidência de alterações morfológicas nos animais acometidos não promoveu aumento de injurias à cromatina. Todos os animais com leishmaniose apresentaram hiperproteinemia do sêmen. The spermatic changes associated with the natural infection in dogs by Leishmania sp was evaluated during eight consecutive weeks, using ejaculates of six seronegative and six seropositive dogs. The samples were collected once a week and evaluated for volume, concentration, motility, vigor, sperm morphology, chromatin integrity, simultaneous evaluation of the plasmatic membrane integrity, acrosome, and mitochondrial potential. The total proteins of the seminal plasma and blood were measured. The visceral leishmaniasis caused increase of major and minor defects in spermatozoa of animals attacked by moderate to severe stages of the disease. In more advanced stages of the illness, the acrosomal and plasmatic membranes integrity was adversely affected. It was not possible to establish a pattern refering the evaluation of the mitochondrial potential. The incidence of morphological changes in the seropositive animals did not promote an increase of injuries to the chromatin. All animals with leishmaniasis presented hyperproteinemia of the semen. Para esse fim foram usadas seis amostras de cornos uterinos, em corte médio, para cada grupo. As mensurações das espessuras da parede uterina, endométrio total, miométrio total, miométrio interno, miométrio externo, estrato vascular e diâmetro das glândulas endometriais normais não foram estatisticamente significantes entre as cadelas multíparas e tratadas, com exceção para a altura do epitélio de glândulas normais. As mensurações das espessuras da parede uterina, endométrio total, miométrio total, miométrio interno, diâmetro das glândulas normais e altura do epitélio glandular foram significantes, comparando cadelas nulíparas com as multíparas e/ou tratadas, com exceção para as espessuras do miométrio externo e estrato vascular. Diante dos resultados obtidos, pode-se concluir que os dados numéricos confirmam que (1) o uso de anticoncepcionais e sucessivas gestações afetam a estrutura uterina em seu total; (2) o miométrio externo e estrato vascular foram as regiões que menos sofreram alterações comparando-se os 3 grupos; (3) as variações morfológicas ocorreram com a mesma intensidade no endométrio e miométrio totais para as cadelas tratadas e multíparas, e (4) a presença de glândulas endometriais dilatadas foi o diferencial encontrado nas cadelas tratadas, pois as mesmas estavam ausentes nas multíparas e nulíparas. Histological and morphometric data were obtained from uterus of nulliparous bitches (n=6), multiparous ones (n=6), and bitches treated with contraceptive (n=6). Six samples of uterine horns, cut in average for each group. Measurements of the thickness of the uterine wall, total endometrium, total myometrium, internal myometrium, external myometrium, vascular layer and diameter of normal endometrial glands were not statistically significant between the treated and multiparous bitches, except for the height of the epithelium of normal glands. Measurements of thickness of the uterine wall, total endometrium, total myometrium, myometrium internal diameter and height of the glands of normal glandular epithelium were significant, comparing nulliparous with multiparous bitches and/or treated, except for thickness of the myometrium and vascular outer layer. It can be concluded that (1) the use of contraceptives and successive pregnancies affected uterine structures in its full, (2) the vascular layer and external myometrium were the regions with less variation, (3) morphological changes occurred with the same intensity in the total endometrium and myometrium of treated and multiparous bitches; and (4) the presence of dilated endometrial glands was the difference found in the treated bitches, because they were absent in nulliparous and multiparous ones. Verificou-se que: (1) aos 4 meses de idade os túbulos seminíferos apresentaram-se pouco desenvolvidos e com ausência de luz, epitélio seminífero baixo, células de Sertoli indiferenciadas e tecido intersticial escasso; (2) aos 5 meses os túbulos seminíferos começaram a se diferenciar com aumento do diâmetro e luz tubulares e as demais estruturas permaneceram semelhantes à observação anterior; (3) aos 6-7 meses ocorreu o início da espermatogênese e espermiogênese; as células de Leydig apareceram maiores, poliédricas com citoplasma vacuolizado e núcleo claro, e tecido intersticial esparso com poucos vasos sangüíneos; (4) os animais com 1 ano de idade apresentaram morfologia testicular igual à do animal adulto, com túbulos seminíferos de maior diâmetro, epitélio germinativo alto e luz tubular pequena, as células de Leydig aparecendo poliédricas, com dimensões variadas, citoplasma vacuolizado, núcleo claro e nucléolo evidente, e espaço intertubular seminífero variado com vasos sanguíneos, predominantemente evidentes; (5) no Grupo 1 o diâmetro médio dos túbulos seminíferos foi de 160,58µm e no Grupo 2 foi de 185,94µm, sendo os valores médios significantes entre si; (6) a altura média do epitélio seminífero foi de 49,51µm para o Grupo 1 e de 63,29µm para o Grupo 2, estaticamente significantes; (7) os maiores valores mensurados foram obtidos para os gatos do Grupo 2, por serem gatos adultos e portanto com os órgãos reprodutores funcionais. This paper deals with a comparative histologic and morphometric study of the testes of domestic cats distributed into two groups: Group 1, cats until 1 year of age, and Group 2, cats over 1 year. It was found that: (1) at 4 months of age the seminiferous tubules were poorly developed, appeared as seminiferous cords without lumen, lined by a low epithelium, and showed undifferentiated Sertoli cells and scarce interstitial tissue; (2) at 5 months the seminiferous tubules began to differentiate with increase in tubular diameter and lumen, the other tubular structures remaining similar to those previous referred; (3) at 6 and 7 months of age spermatocytogenesis began to appear, Leydig cells were large, polyhedral in shape, with vacuolated cytoplasm and clear nuclei, resting on a sparse interstitial tissue with few blood vessels; (4) 1-year-old cats showed testicular histological features of an adult animal, had seminiferous tubules of large diameter and high seminiferous epithelium with small lumen, and Leydig cells of different sizes, with polyhedral shape, vacuolated cytoplasm, clear nuclei and evident nucleoli resting in a sparse interstitial tissue with some blood vessels; (5) in Group 1 the average diameter of the seminiferous tubules was 160.58µm, and 185.94µm in Group 2; (6) the height of the seminiferous epithelium was 49.51µm for Group 1 and 63.29µm for Group 2; (7) the largest measures of the analyzed parameters were found in animals of Group 2, with functional reproductive organs. Contents The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of season in southeast of Brazil comparing genotypes on semen characteristics, freezability and peripheral plasma concentrations of testosterone. Ejaculates of five Bos indicus bulls and six Bos taurus bulls were evaluated over a period of 27 months, which was divided into winter (July, August, September), spring (October, November, December), summer (January, February, March) and autumn (April, May, June). Semen was evaluated according to standard procedures for ejaculate volume, sperm concentration, gross-motility, progressive motility and sperm morphology. As alterações morfológicas dos defeitos maiores e menores não variaram entre o touro com a patologia e os demais touros, no entanto, durante o verão o touro com varicocele apresentou maior percentual de defeitos totais se comparado aos demais touros da mesma espécie (49,86%±6,9 e 27,91%±2,9). O animal apresentou maior percentual de defeitos maiores no verão se comparado às outras estações do ano. Os achados de necrópsia confirmaram o diagnóstico clínico. Pode-se concluir que esta patologia, caracterizada por trombose nos vasos do cordão espermático, comprometeu a termoregulação determinando degeneração testicular severa. O aumento das concentrações de testosterona sérica sugerem a diminuição da retenção de esteroides nos testículos pelo plexo pampiniforme, a produção espermática estava anormal. A bovine, Bos indicus, with bilateral varicocele diagnosticed by palpation and ultrasound observation was observed during 24 months measuring scrotal circumference, semen quality, testosterone concentrations comparing with seasonal variation and other animals of the same species. The abnormal morphology of major defects and minor defects didn't change between the bull and the other animals, however, the total defects were higher during the summer in the bull with varicocele (49,9%±6,9) when compared with the other bulls (27,9%±2,9). The animal showed higher percentage of major defects during the summer, comparing with the other seasons of the year. For the animal with varicocele testosterone levels were significantly higher during the different season's of the year, whereas decreasing levels in the summer were seen in all Bos indicus. The clinical diagnostic was confirmed by necropsy. This pathology, characterized by a bilateral varicocele with thrombosis of the spermatic cord vessels, showed that the thermoregulation suffered establishing severe testicular degeneration. As seric testosterone increased suggesting lack of steroid retention at the testicle by the pampiniform plexus, the sperm production was abnormal. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2012-12-01 Histomorphometric data were obtained from cats uterine horns: either nulliparous (n = 6), primiparous (n = 6), multiparous (n = 6) and treated with contraceptive (n = 6). The material was collected after surgery, fixed in paraformaldehyde and embedded in paraplast® resin to be sliced in a microtome. The obtained sections were stained with hematoxylin - eosin and measured under a light microscope: uterine wall total thickness (μm), endometrium total height, endometrial glands diameter and glandular epithelia height, total myometrium, internal and external myometrium and vascular layer thickness. It was concluded that: 1 - contraceptive use and number of pregnancies altered the uterine structure, 2 - one pregnancy does not appear to affect the uterine lining structures as occurs in multiparous cats, 3 - there was no variation on the evaluated structures between nulliparous and primiparous cats except for inner myometrium, 4 - the total myometrium hight and the endometrium hight showed similar variations except for the contraceptive treated cats group, 5 - the outer myometrium showed marked changes in the treated cats, 6 - the less marked morphological variations were for the endometrial glands diameter and glandular epithelium hight, 7 - the presence of dilated endometrial glands was found only in treated cats. O trabalho teve como objetivo correlacionar dados da parturicao com o acompanhamento diario da temperatura retal no pos-parto imediato em femeas bovinas. Foram selecionadas aleatoriamente 180 vacas leiteiras provenientes de sete propriedades, em Aracatuba (SP) e regiao, sendo monitoradas durante o puerperio precoce, no periodo de setembro de 1999 a julho de 2000. Do primeiro ao decimo dia pos-parto a temperatura retal (TR) de todos os animais foi aferida no intervalo das 05:00 as 08:00 horas da manha, utilizando-se termometro eletronico (M525 - GLA Agricultural Electronics, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401-7500). Foi considerada acima da normalidade TR superior a 39,5°C, sendo colhidas informacoes sobre eventuais distocias, partos gemelares, retencao de membranas fetais, alteracao do estado geral, ingestao de alimentos, producao de leite e descarga vaginal. Houve associacao significativa entre descarga vaginal purulenta ou sanguinolenta e estado febril, sendo que dos 180 animais observados, 26 (14,4%) apresentaram corrimento vaginal patologico, destes dez (38,5%) tiveram febre, enquanto que os bovinos sem presenca de secrecao alterada tiveram elevacao na temperatura corporea em 17,5% dos casos. Tambem ocorreu associacao significativa entre parto distocico e placenta retida, 37 vacas (20,6%) mostraram parturicao dificil e, destas, oito (21,6%) retiveram as membranas fetais, enquanto as femeas que pariram normalmente tiveram 4,2% (seis animais) de retencao de secundinas. Constatou-se que vacas apenas com retencao placentaria nao apresentaram sinais clinicos, exceto presenca de uma transitoria reducao no apetite e da producao lactea. Este monitoramento diario, atraves da afericao da temperatura retal, consiste em importante instrumento adicional, podendo indicar precocemente alteracoes reprodutivas, como possiveis infeccoes uterinas, maximizando a producao leiteira e a performance reprodutiva futura.
