Background Significant progress in the field of cystic fibrosis (CF) has substantially extended the life expectancy of patients with CF (pwCF). Consequently, the population of adult pwCF has outnumbered paediatric patients in most developed countries. Ageing is a new factor that can contribute to disease complexity and can require adaptation of CF units. Therefore, the necessity for standardised, specialised and multidisciplinary care is imperative. Concerns arise regarding the adequacy of current healthcare, therapeutic and educational offerings. Methods To address these concerns, a multinational survey was conducted to assess the current state of care in specialised multidisciplinary adult and paediatric CF units and identify areas for improvement. Responses were collected from 44 centres providing regular care to CF patients. Results The survey unveiled considerable disparities in the availability of critical resources, including diagnostic access, supplementary testing, treatment modalities, transplant and transition programmes, and healthcare professionals’ training. Conclusion This study underscores the urgent need to standardise care across these centres in order to minimise disparities in terms of available resources and training with a particular emphasis on adult pwCF who are becoming more numerous and showing different needs with ageing. The changing landscape of CF in adulthood will require constant monitoring to ensure proper adaptation of the current model of care.

Lignin, a paper and pulp industry waste product, has attracted significant attention in recent years as a promising sustainable material for high-end energy applications. Herein, we examine lignin as a potential material for ionic thermoelectric hydrogels and carbon-based materials. Optimized lignin-derived hydrogels demonstrate a remarkable Seebeck coefficient of 3.63 mV/K when subjected to an axial temperature gradient. Furthermore, synthesized lignin-based porous carbon materials exhibit exceptional performance as supercapacitor electrodes, with a superior specific capacitance of 56.3 F/g at 0.5 A/g. Lignin-based hydrogels and porous carbon electrodes offer a promising path towards the development of lignin-derived ionic thermoelectric supercapacitors.

Abstract Background Hostile environment around the lesion site following spinal cord injury (SCI) prevents the re-establishment of neuronal tracks, thus significantly limiting the regenerative capability. Electroconductive scaffolds are emerging as a promising option for SCI repair, though currently available conductive polymers such as polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) present poor biofunctionality and biocompatibility, thus limiting their effective use in SCI tissue engineering (TE) treatment strategies. Methods PEDOT NPs were synthesized via chemical oxidation polymerization in miniemulsion. The conductive PEDOT NPs were incorporated with gelatin and hyaluronic acid (HA) to create gel:HA:PEDOT-NPs scaffolds. Morphological analysis of both PEDOT NPs and scaffolds was conducted via SEM. Further characterisation included dielectric constant and permittivity variances mapped against morphological changes after crosslinking, Young’s modulus, FTIR, DLS, swelling studies, rheology, in-vitro, and in-vivo biocompatibility studies were also conducted. Results Incorporation of PEDOT NPs increased the conductivity of scaffolds to 8.3 × 10–4 ± 8.1 × 10–5 S/cm. The compressive modulus of the scaffold was tailored to match the native spinal cord at 1.2 ± 0.2 MPa, along with controlled porosity. Rheological studies of the hydrogel showed excellent 3D shear-thinning printing capabilities and shape fidelity post-printing. In-vitro studies showed the scaffolds are cytocompatible and an in-vivo assessment in a rat SCI lesion model shows glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) upregulation not directly in contact with the lesion/implantation site, with diminished astrocyte reactivity. Decreased levels of macrophage and microglia reactivity at the implant site is also observed. This positively influences the re-establishment of signals and initiation of healing mechanisms. Observation of axon migration towards the scaffold can be attributed to immunomodulatory properties of HA in the scaffold caused by a controlled inflammatory response. HA limits astrocyte activation through its CD44 receptors and therefore limits scar formation. This allows for a superior axonal migration and growth towards the targeted implantation site through the provision of a stimulating microenvironment for regeneration. Conclusions Based on these results, the incorporation of PEDOT NPs into Gel:HA biomaterial scaffolds enhances not only the conductive capabilities of the material, but also the provision of a healing environment around lesions in SCI. Hence, gel:HA:PEDOT-NPs scaffolds are a promising TE option for stimulating regeneration for SCI.

Background Lung ultrasound (LUS) has proven to be useful in the evaluation of lung involvement in COVID-19. However, its effectiveness for predicting the risk of severe disease is still up for debate. The aim of the study was to establish the prognostic accuracy of serial LUS examinations in the prediction of clinical deterioration in hospitalised patients with COVID-19. Methods Prospective single-centre cohort study of patients hospitalised for COVID-19. The study protocol consisted of a LUS examination within 24 h from admission and a follow-up examination on day 3 of hospitalisation. Lung involvement was evaluated by a 14-area LUS score. The primary end-point was the ability of LUS to predict clinical deterioration defined as need for intensive respiratory support with high-flow oxygen or invasive mechanical ventilation. Results 200 patients were included and 35 (17.5%) of them reached the primary end-point and were transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU). The LUS score at admission had been significantly higher in the ICU group than in the non-ICU group (22 (interquartile range (IQR) 20–26) versus 12 (IQR 8–15)). A LUS score at admission ≥17 was shown to be the best cut-off point to discriminate patients at risk of deterioration (area under the curve (AUC) 0.95). The absence of progression in LUS score on day 3 significantly increased the prediction accuracy by ruling out deterioration with a negative predictive value of 99.29%. Conclusion Serial LUS is a reliable tool in predicting the risk of respiratory deterioration in patients hospitalised due to COVID-19 pneumonia. LUS could be further implemented in the future for risk stratification of viral pneumonia.

In this study, we have improved the power factor of conductive polymer nanocomposites by combining layer-by-layer assembly with electrochemical deposition to produce flexible thermoelectric materials based on PEDOT/carbon nanotubes (CNTs)—films. To produce films based on CNTs and PEDOT, a dual approach has been employed: (i) the layer-by-layer method has been utilized for constructing the CNTs layer and (ii) electrochemical polymerization has been used in the synthesis of the conducting polymer. Moreover, the thermoelectric properties were optimized by controlling the experimental conditions including the number of deposition cycles and electropolymerizing time. The electrical characterization of the samples was carried out by measuring the Seebeck voltage produced under a small temperature difference and by measuring the electrical conductivity using the four-point probe method. The resulting values of the Seebeck coefficient S and σ were used to determine the power factor. The structural and morphological analyses of CNTs/PEDOT samples were carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy. The best power factor achieved was 131.1 (μWm−1K−2), a competitive value comparable to some inorganic thermoelectric materials. Since the synthesis of the CNT/PEDOT layers is rather simple and the ingredients used are relatively inexpensive and environmentally friendly, the proposed nanocomposites are a very interesting approach as an application for recycling heat waste.

This work focuses on the encapsulation of two organic phase change materials (PCMs), hexadecane and octadecane, through the formation of nanocapsules of the conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) obtained by oxidative polymerization in miniemulsion. The energy storage capacity of nanoparticles is studied by preparing polymer films on supporting substrates. The results indicate that the prepared systems can store and later release thermal energy in the form of latent heat efficiently, which is of vital importance to increase the efficiency of future thermoelectric devices.

Abstract The recent development in the field of wearable electronics has increased the demand for batteries as power sources which are subjected to periodic recharging and replacement. Therefore, the next challenge is to design new systems for sustainable energy to power portable electronic devices that can be easily integrated into textiles such as thermoelectric generators that can convert waste heat into electricity. Looking at this scenario, this work shows a methodology to prepare thermoelectric textiles by electrochemical polymerization of poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) on felt fabrics. The polymerization of PEDOT is carried out utilizing three different counterions, LiClO4, 1‐butyl‐3‐methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (PF6), and 1‐ethyl‐3‐methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (BTFMSI) to provide a complete understanding of the role of the counterion in the thermoelectric properties. The electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient are dependent on the counterion, reaching the maximum ZT for PEDOT polymerized in presence of BTFMSI due to an improvement of carrier mobility. In addition, the manufactured textile thermoelectric device showed an outstanding power output (6.5 µW) compared to the previous devices reported to date.

The use of wearable devices has promoted new ways of integrating these devices, one of which is through the development of smart textiles. Smart textiles must possess the mechanical and electrical properties necessary for their functionality. This study explores the impact of polymer-felt microstructure variations on their morphology, electrical, and mechanical properties. The application of thermal treatment, along with an electric field, leads to a substantial structural reorganization of the molecular chains within pristine felt. This results in a system of nanofibrils coated with MWCNT-PEDOT, characterized by highly ordered counterions that facilitate the flow of charge carriers. Both temperature and an electric field induce reversible microstructural changes in pristine felt and irreversible changes in coated felt samples. Furthermore, electropolymerization of PEDOT significantly enhances electrical conductivity, with PEDOT:BTFMSI-coated fabric exhibiting the highest conductivity.

Background: Interstitial lung sequelae are increasingly being reported in survivors of COVID-19 pneumonia. An early detection of these lesions may help prevent the development of irreversible lung fibrosis. Lung ultrasound (LUS) has shown high diagnostic accuracy in interstitial lung disease (ILD) and could likely be used as a first-line test for post-COVID-19 lung sequelae.Methods: Single-center observational prospective study. Follow-up assessments of consecutive patients hospitalized for COVID-19 pneumonia were conducted 2–5 months after the hospitalization. All patients underwent pulmonary function tests (PFTs), high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT), and LUS. Radiological alterations in HRCT were quantified using the Warrick score. The LUS score was obtained by evaluating the presence of pathological B-lines in 12 thoracic areas (range, 0–12). The correlation between the LUS and Warrick scores was analyzed.Results: Three hundred and fifty-two patients who recovered from COVID-19 pneumonia were recruited between July and September 2020. At follow-up, dyspnea was the most frequent symptom (69.3%). FVC and DLCO alterations were present in 79 (22.4%) and 234 (66.5%) patients, respectively. HRCT showed relevant interstitial lung sequelae (RILS) in 154 (43.8%) patients (Warrick score ≥ 7). The LUS score was strongly correlated with the HRCT Warrick score (r = 0.77) and showed a moderate inverse correlation with DLCO (r = −0.55). The ROC curve analysis revealed that a LUS score ≥ 3 indicated an excellent ability to discriminate patients with RILS (sensitivity, 94.2%; specificity, 81.8%; negative predictive value, 94.7%).Conclusions: LUS could be implemented as a first-line procedure in the evaluation of Post-COVID-19 interstitial lung sequelae. A normal LUS examination rules out the presence of these sequelae in COVID-19 survivors, avoiding the need for additional diagnostic tests such as HRCT.

Thermoelectric (TE) materials have been considered as a promising energy harvesting technology for sustainably providing power to electronic devices. In particular, organic-based TE materials that consist of conducting polymers and carbon nanofillers make a large variety of applications. In this work, we develop organic TE nanocomposites via successive spraying of intrinsically conductive polymers such as polyaniline (PANi) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxy- thiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and carbon nanofillers, and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT). It is found that the growth rate of the layer-by-layer (LbL) thin films, which comprise a PANi/SWNT-PEDOT:PSS repeating sequence, made by the spraying method is greater than that of the same ones assembled by traditional dip coating. The surface structure of multilayer thin films constructed by the spraying approach show excellent coverage of highly networked individual and bundled SWNT, which is similarly to what is observed when carbon nanotubes-based LbL assemblies are formed by classic dipping. The multilayer thin films via the spray-assisted LbL process exhibit significantly improved TE performances. A 20-bilayer PANi/SWNT-PEDOT:PSS thin film (~90 nm thick) yields an electrical conductivity of 14.3 S/cm and Seebeck coefficient of 76 μV/K. These two values translate to a power factor of 8.2 μW/m·K2, which is 9 times as large as the same films fabricated by a classic immersion process. We believe that this LbL spraying method will open up many opportunities in developing multifunctional thin films for large-scaled industrial use due to rapid processing and the ease with which it is applied.

Segmented thermoplastic polyurethanes (PU) were synthetized using a polycarbonatediol macrodiol as a flexible or soft segment with a molar mass of 2000 g/mol, and different diisocyanate molecules and 1,4-butanediol as a rigid or hard segment. The diisocyanate molecules employed are 3,3′-Dimethyl-4,4′-biphenyl diisocyanate (TODI), 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), 4,4′-Methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate) 1-isocyanato-4-[(4-phenylisocyanate)methyl]benzene and 1-isocyanate-4-[(2-phenylisocyanate) methyl]benzene (ratio 1:1) (MDIi), isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI). The polyurethanes obtained reveal a wide variation of microphase separation degree that is correlated with mechanical properties. Different techniques, such as DSC, DMA, and FTIR, have been used to determine flexible–rigid segment phase behavior. Mechanical properties, such as tensile properties, Shore D hardness, and “compression set”, have been determined. This work reveals that the structure of the hard segment is crucial to determine the degree of phase miscibility which affects the resulting mechanical properties, such as tensile properties, hardness, and “compression set”.

KL-6 is an antigen produced mainly by damaged type II pneumocytes that is involved in interstitial lung disease. Chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD) after lung transplantation (LT) is a major concern for LT clinicians, especially in patients with restrictive allograft syndrome (RAS). We investigated KL-6 levels in serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) as a potential biomarker of the RAS phenotype. Levels of KL-6 in serum and BALF were measured in 73 bilateral LT recipients, and patients were categorized into 4 groups: stable (ST), infection (LTI), bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS), and RAS. We also studied a healthy cohort to determine reference values for serum KL-6. The highest levels of KL-6 were found in the serum of patients with RAS (918 [487.8-1638] U/mL). No differences were found for levels of KL-6 in BALF. Using a cut-off value of 465 U/mL serum KL-6 levels was able to differentiate RAS patients from BOS patients with a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 75%. Furthermore, higher serum KL-6 levels were associated with a decline in Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) at 6 months after sample collection. Therefore, KL-6 in serum may well be a potential biomarker for differentiating between the BOS and RAS phenotypes of CLAD in LT recipients.

Reproductions of archaeological artefacts play a necessary role in our societies while allowing an induced multiplicity of the original, which supposes benefits for conservation, dissemination and promotion of our heritage. But the reproduction of metal objects has been a challenge for museums and institutions, due to the complexity of emulating metals, and thus, the implementation of traditional techniques such as lost wax casting or electrolytic processes have been set in many cases as the mainly solution. The aim of this paper is to propose an alternative procedure, based on the use of thermosetting resin composites with metallic fillers. A comparison between the solutions provided by artificial metal and artistic casting techniques is done for two cases of study, juxtaposing advantages and limitations of both procedures.

Nowadays, sustainable materials are receiving significant attention due to the fact that they will be crucial for the development of the next generation of products and devices. In the present work, hydrogels have been successfully synthesized using lignin which is non-valorized biopolymer from the paper industry. Hydrogels were prepared via crosslinking with Poly(ethylene) glycol diglycidyl ether (PEGDGE). Different crosslinker ratios were used to determine their influence on the structural and chemical properties of the resulting hydrogels. It has been found that pore size was reduced by increasing crosslinker amount. The greater crosslinking density increased the swelling capacity of the hydrogels due to the presence of more hydrophilic groups in the hydrogel network. Paracetamol release test showed higher drug diffusion for hydrogels produced with a ratio lignin:PEGDGE 1:1. The obtained results demonstrate that the proposed approach is a promising route to utilize lignocellulose waste for producing porous materials for advanced biomedical applications in the pharmacy industry.

Artificial Metals are polymeric semi-metallic composites obtained by combining thermosetting resins with atomized metal powders in order to achieve composite materials capable of reproducing metals, even in a rusty or corroded condition. These composites provide a solution for the reproduction of archaeological artefacts, sculptures, and ornaments for the purpose of conservation.This work explores mechanical properties of three different resins bronze composites loaded with two different proportions of metal filler. The degree of conversion of the samples was measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and flexural tests were carried out to determine their mechanical performance. In addition, the samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in order to determine the morphology of the samples at the microscale.

In this review, we report the state-of-the-art of polymers in thermoelectricity. Classically, a number of inorganic compounds have been considered as the best thermoelectric materials. Since the prediction of the improvement of the figure of merit by means of electronic confinement in 1993, it has been improved by a factor of 3–4. In the mean time, organic materials, in particular intrinsically conducting polymers, had been considered as competitors of classical thermoelectrics, since their figure of merit has been improved several orders of magnitude in the last few years. We review here the evolution of the figure of merit or the power factor during the last years, and the best candidates to compete with inorganic materials. We also outline the best polymers to substitute classical thermoelectric materials and the advantages they present in comparison with inorganic systems.

Antecedentes: Las proteínas del suero son un subproducto de la industria de derivados lácteos que actualmente se han convertido en una fuente de contaminación de los efluentes. Estudios han mostrado sus excelentes propiedades para la fabricación de películas y recubrimientos con la adición de antioxidantes, considerada como una alternativa ecológica que reduciría el uso de polímeros sintéticos y garantiza la conservación de algunos alimentos. Objetivo: El objetivo del presente estudio fue caracterizar las propiedades mecánicas, ópticas, morfológicas y de biodegradación de una película activa, obtenida a partir de las proteínas extraídas del suero de quesería y el antioxidante natural alfa-tocoferol, para ser utilizada en la conservación de diferentes alimentos. Métodos: Las películas se elaboraron a partir de una solución 10% (w/w) de concentrado de proteínas de lactosuero (WPC) en agua, se adicionó glicerol como plastificante y alfa-tocoferol al 1 y 2% w/w disuelto en etanol. Se evaluaron las propiedades mecánicas de las películas bajo la norma ASTM D882-01; además, se analizaron por espectrofotometría, microscopía electrónica de barrido (SEM) y se realizó un análisis de biodegradación por control de la pérdida de masa. Resultados: Las películas obtenidas presentaron adecuada apariencia física y coloración ligeramente parda. La tensión disminuyó de manera similar con la adición de alfa-tocoferol al 1 y 2 %; sin embargo, la más alta elongación se presentó para películas con alfa-tocoferol al 1%. Las películas mostraron una excelente propiedad de barrera, en el rango de 300-400 nm de la región UV. Las fotografías en SEM mostraron las microgotas del antioxidante en la superficie de la película y se confirmó el proceso de biodegradación en las películas evaluadas. Conclusión: Las propiedades mecánicas, ópticas, de morfología y biodegradación de las películas fueron directamente afectadas por la cantidad de alfa-tocoferol empleada en la formulación. La incorporación del compuesto natural en las películas de proteína tiene un potencial uso para extender la vida útil de alimentos grasos.

The influence of lignin modification on drug release and pH-dependent releasing behavior of oral solid dosage forms was investigated using three different formulations. The first formulation contains microcrystalline cellulose (MCC 101) as the excipient and paracetamol as the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). The second formulation includes Alcell lignin and MCC 101 as the excipient and paracetamol, and the third formulation consists of carboxylated Alcell lignin, MCC 101 and paracetamol. Direct compaction was carried out in order to prepare the tablets. Lignin can be readily chemically modified due to the existence of different functional groups in its structure. The focus of this investigation is on lignin carboxylation and its influence on paracetamol control release behavior at varying pH. Results suggest that carboxylated lignin tablets had the highest drug release, which is linked to their faster disintegration and lower tablet hardness.

Environmental energy issues caused by the burning of fossil fuel such as coal, and petroleum, and the limited resources along with the increasing world population pose a world-wide challenge. Alternative energy sources including solar energy, wind energy, and biomass energy, have been suggested as practical and affordable solutions to future energy needs. Among energy conversion technologies, thermoelectric (TE) materials are considered one of the most potential candidates to play a crucial role in addressing today’s global energy issues. TE materials can convert waste heat such as the sun, automotive exhaust, and industrial processes to a useful electrical voltage with no moving parts, no hazardous working chemical-fluids, low maintenance costs, and high reliability. These advantages of TE conversion provide solutions to solve the energy crisis. Here, we provide a comprehensive review of the recent progress on organic TE materials, focused on polymers and their corresponding organic composites incorporated with carbon nanofillers (including graphene and carbon nanotubes). Various strategies to enhance the TE properties, such as electrical conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient, in polymers and polymer composites will be highlighted. Then, a discussion on polymer composite based TE devices is summarized. Finally, brief conclusions and outlooks for future research efforts are presented.
