Física nuclear - Abstract
We present angle-differential and angle-integrated cross sections for electron-impact excitation of the (4d(10)5s) S-2(1/ 2) -> (4d(9)5s(2)) D-2(3/ 2) and (4d(10)5s) S-2(1/ 2) ->(4d(10)6s) S-2(1/ 2) transitions in atomic silver. Experimental data for four incident electron energies between 10 and 60 eV are compared with predictions from our relativistic distorted wave (RDW) and nonrelativistic atomic optical potential models. Agreement between our measured and calculated data is only fair, although in the case of the RDW it is seen to improve with increasing incident electron energy. However, only for the (4d(10)6s) S-2(1/2) excitation process, agreement of our measured data with earlier relativistic convergent close coupling results from McNamara et al. [J. Phys. B 51, 085203 (2018)] was, with a few exceptions, typically observed to be very good, to within the uncertainties on the data.

- Abstract
We present possibility analysis of using Y
2 O2 S:Er,Yb for temperature sensing. Material samples were obtained by solution combustion method. We have used pulsed laser diode excitation at 980 nm. Our analysis is based on time resolved luminescence spectra acquired by a streak camera. Intensity ratios of prominent luminescence peaks were used for determining the temperature sensing curves. We compare the synthesized Y2 O2 S:Er,Yb material with other thermophosphors, showing its usefulness for temperature measurements up to 620 K. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Física nuclear - Abstract
We present angle-integrated and angle-differential cross sections for electron-impact excitation of the (5s(2)5p) P-2(1/2) -> (5s(2)6s) S-2(1/2) transition in atomic indium. Experimental data for six incident electron energies between 10 and 100 eV are compared with predictions from semirelativistic and fully relativistic B-spline R-matrix calculations, as well as a fully relativistic convergent close-coupling model. Agreement between our measured and calculated data is, with a few exceptions, found to be typically very good. Additionally, the agreement between the present theoretical predictions is generally excellent, with the remaining small deviations being associated with the slightly different, although still very accurate, descriptions of the target structure. Agreement between the present results and an earlier relativistic distorted-wave computation [T. Das, R. Srivastava, and A. D. Stauffer, Phys. Lett. A 375, 568 (2011)] was, however, found to be marginal, particularly at 10 and 20 eV.

We thank Dr. L. Campbell for his help with some aspects of this paper., We report on experimental elastic differential and integral cross sections for electron scattering from bismuth. The energy range of those measurements is 10-100 eV, while the scattered electron angular range in the differential cross section data is 10 degrees-150 degrees. We also supplement our experimental results with theoretical data from our optical potential approach, in this case applying two different sets of scattering potentials to the problem. Good overall qualitative accord is typically observed between our measured and calculated results, particularly when allowance is made for the dimer contribution in the experimental atomic beam., Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICINN), Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), Australian Research Council, Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia, Ministry of Scientific and Technological Development, Higher Education and Information Society of the Republic of Srpska, Ministry of Scientific and Technological Development, Higher Education and Information Society of the Republic of Bosnia, Ministry of Scientific and Technological Development, Higher Education and Information Society of the Republic of Herzegovina, Depto. de Estructura de la Materia, Física Térmica y Electrónica, Fac. de Ciencias Físicas, TRUE, pub

Differences between high- and low-income settings in the availability of laparoscopic appendectomy, alternative management choices, and outcomes are poorly described. The aim was to identify variation in surgical management and outcomes of appendicitis within low-, middle-, and high-Human Development Index (HDI) countries worldwide. Methods This is a multicenter, international prospective cohort study. Consecutive sampling of patients undergoing emergency appendectomy over 6 months was conducted. Follow-up lasted 30 days. Results 4546 patients from 52 countries underwent appendectomy (2499 high-, 1540 middle-, and 507 low-HDI groups). Surgical site infection (SSI) rates were higher in low-HDI (OR 2.57, 95% CI 1.33-4.99, p = 0.005) but not middle-HDI countries (OR 1.38, 95% CI 0.76-2.52, p = 0.291), compared with high-HDI countries after adjustment. A laparoscopic approach was common in high-HDI countries (1693/2499, 67.7%), but infrequent in low-HDI (41/507, 8.1%) and middle-HDI (132/1540, 8.6%) groups. After accounting for case-mix, laparoscopy was still associated with fewer overall complications (OR 0.55, 95% CI 0.42-0.71, p < 0.001) and SSIs (OR 0.22, 95% CI 0.14-0.33, p < 0.001). In propensity-score matched groups within low-/middle-HDI countries, laparoscopy was still associated with fewer overall complications (OR 0.23 95% CI 0.11-0.44) and SSI (OR 0.21 95% CI 0.09-0.45). Conclusion A laparoscopic approach is associated with better outcomes and availability appears to differ by country HDI. Despite the profound clinical, operational, and financial barriers to its widespread introduction, laparoscopy could significantly improve outcomes for patients in low-resource environments. We report results of measurements and calculations of absolute cross sections for electron scattering from furan molecules (C4H4O). The experimental absolute differential cross sections (DCSs) for elastic electron scattering were obtained for the incident energies from 50 eV to 300 eV and for scattering angles from 20º to 110º, by using a crossed electron-target beam setup and the relative flow technique for calibration to the absolute scale. The calculations of the electron interaction cross sections are based on a corrected form of the independent-atom method, known as the screening corrected additivity rule (SCAR) procedure and using an improved quasifree absorption model. The latter calculations also account for rotational excitations in the approximation of a free electric dipole and were used to obtain elastic DCSs as well as total and integral elastic cross sections which are tabulated in the energy range from 10 to 10 000 eV. All SCAR calculated cross sections agree very well with both the present and previously published experimental results. Additionally, calculations based on the first Born approximation were performed to calculate both elastic and vibrationally inelastic DCSs for all the modes of furane, in the energy range from 50 eV to 300 eV. The ratios of the summed vibrational to elastic DCSs are presented and discussed. Finally, the present results for furan are compared with previously published elastic DCSs for the tetrahydrofuran molecule and discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The Virtual Atomic and Molecular Data Centre (VAMDC) Consortium is a worldwide consortium which federates atomic and molecular databases through an e-science infrastructure and an organisation to support this activity. About 90% of the inter-connected databases handle data that are used for the interpretation of astronomical spectra and for modelling in many fields of astrophysics. Recently the VAMDC Consortium has connected databases from the radiation damage and the plasma communities, as well as promoting the publication of data from Indian institutes. This paper describes how the VAMDC Consortium is organised for the optimal distribution of atomic and molecular data for scientific research. It is noted that the VAMDC Consortium strongly advocates that authors of research papers using data cite the original experimental and theoretical papers as well as the relevant databases.

- Abstract
Ion beam therapy offers the possibility of excellent dose localization for treatment of malignant tumours, minimizing radiation damage in normal tissue, while maximizing cell killing within the tumour. However, as the underlying dependent physical, chemical and biological processes are too complex to treat them on a purely analytical level, most of our current and future understanding will rely on computer simulations, based on mathematical equations, algorithms and last, but not least, on the available atomic and molecular data. The viability of the simulated output and the success of any computer simulation will be determined by these data, which are treated as the input variables in each computer simulation performed. The radiation research community lacks a complete database for the cross sections of all the different processes involved in ion beam induced damage: ionization and excitation cross sections for ions with liquid water and biological molecules, all the possible electron - medium interactions, dielectric response data, electron attachment to biomolecules etc. In this paper we discuss current progress in the creation of such a database, outline the roadmap of the project and review plans for the exploitation of such a database in future simulations.

- Abstract
Electron transmission through insulating Al2O3 nanocapillaries of different diameters (40 and 270 nm) and 15 mu m length has been investigated for low-energy electrons (2-120 eV). The total intensity of transmitted current weakly depends on the incident electron energy and tilt angle defined with respect to the capillary axis. On the other hand, the intensity of elastically transmitted electrons significantly varies with the alteration of electron energy and tilt angle. In addition, we measured an energy distribution of electrons transmitted both in the straightforward direction and at large tilt angle. The measured spectra show that inelastic processes dominate and, in particular, a large amount of low-energy electrons. These low-energy electrons can be either inelastically scattered projectiles or secondary electrons emitted within the capillaries. Furthermore, a change of the tilt angle appears to influence significantly only the intensity of the elastic transmission. The present results suggest a more complex nature of low-energy electron transport through insulating nanocapillaries than proposed for positive ions. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2009

- Abstract
We report an experimental study of guided transmission of low-energy (200-350 eV) electrons through highly ordered Al2O3 nanocapillaries with large aspect ratio (140 nm diameter and 15 mu m length). The nanochannel array was prepared using self-ordering phenomena during a two-step anodization process of a high-purity aluminum foil. The experimental results clearly show the existence of the guiding effect, as found for highly charged ions. The guiding of the electron beam was observed for tilt angles up to 12 degrees. As seen for highly charged ions, the guiding efficiency increases with decreasing electron incident energy. The transmission efficiency appeared to be significantly lower than observed for highly charged ions and, moreover, the intensity of transmitted electrons significantly decreases with decreasing impact energy.

In this work, we report results of high-pressure Raman experiments (P < 8 GPa) on In
2-x Yx Mo3 O12 for x = 0.0 and 0.5. A crystalline to crystalline structural phase transition and pressure-induced amorphization (PIA) have been identified. The structural phase transition takes place at 1.5 and 1.0 GPa for In2 (MoO4 )3 and In1.5 Y0.5 (MoO4 )3 , respectively, resulting in the change of structure from monoclinic P21 /a to a more denser structure. The PIA started at 5 and 3.4 GPa for In2 Mo3 O12 and In1.5 Y0.5 Mo3 O12 , respectively. The amorphization process takes place in two stages in the case of In1.5 Y0.5 Mo3 O12 phase, while for In2 Mo3 O12 , it is not complete until the pressure is as high as 7 GPa. Our results also suggest that with increase of ionic size of the A3+ ions, the octahedral distortion increases and consequently larger local structural disorder is introduced in the A2 (MoO4 )3 system, where A is a trivalent ion (In, Y3+ , Sc3+ , Fe3+ , etc.).
