The article discusses the results of a study which investigated the pirarucu parasitofauna in the giant Amazon basin. It describes the pirarucu as the largest scaled freshwater fish species in the world which can reach three meters in length. It notes that pirarucu A. gigas has a high parasite diversity in the natural environment, including Myxozoa, Monogenoidea, and Nematoda. The importance of acquiring knowledge of the ecological relationships among parasites is also emphasized.

The article discusses the analysis of the infestation rate in Colossoma macropomum, hybrid tambacu (C. macropomum x Piaractus mesopotamicus) and hybrid tambatinga (C. macropomum x Piaractus brachypomum) with Perulernaea gamitanae from two fish farms in Amapá State, Brazil. Inflammation and fibrous nodules were observed on the attachment sites of the parasites. There was higher intensity of P. gamitanae in tambacu and tambatinga, but its intensity was moderate.
