Abstract

We provide an overview of the status of Monte-Carlo event generators for high-energy particle physics. Guided by the experimental needs and requirements, we highlight areas of active development, and opportunities for future improvements. Particular emphasis is given to physics models and algorithms that are employed across a variety of experiments. These common themes in event generator development lead to a more comprehensive understanding of physics at the highest energies and intensities, and allow models to be tested against a wealth of data that have been accumulated over the past decades. A cohesive approach to event generator development will allow these models to be further improved and systematic uncertainties to be reduced, directly contributing to future experimental success. Event generators are part of a much larger ecosystem of computational tools. They typically involve a number of unknown model parameters that must be tuned to experimental data, while maintaining the integrity of the underlying physics models. Making both these data, and the analyses with which they have been obtained accessible to future users is an essential aspect of open science and data preservation. 2. Grain refinement in unalloyed tantalum structure deposited using Wire + Arc Additive Manufacture and vertical cold rolling

Abstract

Components manufactured via Wire + Arc Additive Manufacturing are usually characterised by large columnar grains. This can be mitigated by introducing in-process cold-rolling; in fact, the associated local plastic deformation leads to a reduction of distortion and residual stresses, and to microstructural refinement. In this research, inter-pass rolling was applied with a load of 50 kN to a tantalum linear structure to assess its effectiveness in changing the grain structure from columnar to equiaxed, as well as in refining the grain size. An average grain size of 650 microns has been obtained after five cycles of inter-pass rolling and deposition. When the deformed layer was reheated during the subsequent deposition, recrystallisation occurred, leading to the growth of new strain-free finer equiaxed grains. The depth of the refined region has been characterised and correlated to the hardness profile developed after rolling. A reduction of porosity was also registered. Furthermore, a random texture was formed after rolling, which should result in isotropic mechanical properties. Wire + Arc Additive Manufacturing process demonstrated the ability to deposit sound refractory metal components and the possibility to improve the microstructure when coupled with cold inter-pass rolling.

3. Microstructure, hardness and mechanical properties of two different unalloyed tantalum wires deposited via Wire + Arc Additive Manufacture

Abstract

An innovative way of producing large-scale unalloyed tantalum parts, based on the Wire + Arc Additive Manufacturing process, has been developed in this study. Two different unalloyed tantalum wires have been used to deposit 200-mm-long structures in tantalum. The effect of the wire chemistry on microstructure, hardness, porosity, mechanical properties and strain localisation has been investigated. The deposits showed high integrity and excellent mechanical properties, with yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and elongation as high as 234 MPa, 261 MPa, and 36 %, respectively. Indeed, yield strength was higher than commercially available tantalum, even though, in this study, the grains were large and had a high aspect ratio. Wire + Arc Additive Manufacture has clearly shown the potential to produce tantalum components with relatively low cost and reduced lead time, thus offering a new robust and viable manufacturing route.

4. N3LL resummation of one-jettiness for Z -boson plus jet production at hadron colliders

Abstract

We present the resummation of one-jettiness for the color-singlet plus jet production process pp -> (gamma*=Z -> t degrees+t degrees-) + jet at hadron colliders up to the fourth logarithmic order (N3LL). This is the first resummation at this order for processes involving three colored partons at the Born level. We match our resummation formula to the corresponding fixed-order predictions, extending the validity of our results to regions of the phase space where further hard emissions are present. This result paves the way for the construction of next-to-next-to-leading order simulations for color-singlet plus jet production matched to parton showers in the GENEVA framework.

8. High precision for colour singlet processes: double Higgs boson production in Geneva and Drell-Yan threshold resummation for rapidity distributions

Con il programma High Luminosity (HL-LHC) pianificato per gli anni a venire, la luminosità integrata aumenterà di un fattore 10 rispetto al valore predefinito del LHC, fornendo una ricca quantità di nuovi dati per osservare fenomeni rari e testare il Modello Standard con alta precisione. A causa della crescente precisione dei dati del LHC, le predizioni teoriche dovrebbero migliorare anch'esse in precisione, poiché lo stato attuale delle analisi sperimentali è limitato dalle incertezze teoriche. Pertanto, le predizioni teoriche svolgono un ruolo centrale nell'interpretazione di questi dati del collider. Tuttavia, è un processo raro e impegnativo da studiare, richiedendo un notevole sforzo sia da parte degli sperimentali che dei teorici. Due to the increasing precision of LHC data, theoretical predictions should also improve in precision, as the current state of experimental analyses is constrained by theoretical uncertainties. Therefore, theoretical predictions play a central role for the interpretation of these collider data. In this thesis, we address two different but related topics towards high-energy and precision physics. Firstly, we present the implementation of the double Higgs boson production within the Geneva Monte Carlo event generator framework. These generators are essential tools for both theorists and experimentalists, enabling increasingly precise particle level predictions for collider experiments. The double Higgs boson production, moreover, allows for the direct measurement of the trilinear coupling, which is linked to many open questions about particle physics and cosmology. However, it is a rare and challenging process to study, demanding substantial effort from both experimentalists and theorists. For this project, we consider the infinite top mass limit, where the top quark is treated as infinitely heavy and its mass is integrated out. This approximation simplifies the implementation of the calculation, while allowing the study of the new interface for the three different parton showers available in the Geneva framework. Being a gluon-gluon initiated process, the effects of the shower have been found to be different and more pronunced compared to other processes already implemented in our generator, but still compatible with the associated theoretical uncertainties. Abstract

In this work, we study the production of Higgs boson pairs at next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD matched to parton showers, using the Geneva framework and working in the heavy-top-limit approximation. This includes the resummation of large logarithms of the zero-jettiness T 0 up to the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-log accuracy. This process features an extremely large momentum transfer, which makes its study particularly relevant for matching schemes such as that employed in Geneva, where the resummation of a variable different from that used in the ordering of the parton shower is used. To further study this effect, we extend the original shower interface designed for Pythia8 to include other parton showers, such as Dire and Sherpa.

Abstract

We describe a number of improvements to the Geneva method for matching NNLO calculations to parton shower programs. In particular, we detail changes to the resummed calculation used in the matching procedure, including disentangling the cross section dependence on factorisation and beam scales, and an improved treatment of timelike logarithms. We also discuss modifications in the implementation of the splitting functions which serve to make the resummed calculation differential in the higher multiplicity phase space. These changes improve the stability of the numerical cancellation of the nonsingular term at small values of the resolution parameter. As a case study, we consider the gluon-initiated Higgs boson production process gg → H. We validate the NNLO accuracy of our predictions against independent calculations, and compare our showered and hadronised results with recent data taken at the ATLAS and CMS experiments in the diphoton decay channel, finding good agreement.

Abstract

In this paper, a method to assess, optimize and modify the vertical alignment of a road is developed. The aim is to optimize the alignment with respect to fuel consumption and quantify the induced reduction in terms of both fuel consumption and emissions from vehicles' operation, already at early design. The idea consists in employing an averaged-speed-gradient model to a single heavy-duty vehicle (HDV), considering different operating speeds and engine loads. Three optimization models are proposed and can be used to induce different reduction levels — in fuel consumption or emissions — each corresponding to a given road vertical alignment profile, generated using nonlinear optimization techniques. Five performance indicators are estimated based on their gradient-speed dependency. The method is then applied to an existing highway alignment in Norway to compare the performance of generated alignments with that of the initial one. The results show significant reduction potentials for fuel consumption, CO2, and PM at operation stage obtained at the cost of intense modification of the initial alignment. Better performances occur at higher operating speeds. The study offers a clear understanding for the nature and magnitude of the influence exerted by some key variables, when a vertical alignment is adjusted to optimize fuel consumption and emissions of HDVs during their operation. Abstract

A study was undertaken to determine the resources available in Italian hospitals for the control of nosocomial infections and the factors favouring a successful approach. During January-May 2000 a questionnaire about infection control was sent to the hospital health director of all Italian National Health System hospitals treating acute patients and with more than 3500 admissions in 1999. An active programme was defined as a hospital infection control committee (HICC) meeting at least four times in 1999, the presence of a doctor with infection control responsibilities, a nurse employed in infection control and at least one surveillance activity and one infection control guideline issued or updated in the past two years. There was a response rate of 87.5% (463/529). Almost fifteen percent (69/463) of hospitals had an active programme for Infection Control and 76.2% (353/463) had a HICC. Seventy-one percent (330/463) of the hospitals had a hospital infection control physician and 53% (250/463) had infection control nurses. Fifty-two percent (242/463) reported at least one surveillance activity and 70.8% (328/463) had issued or updated at least one guidance document in the last two years. The presence of regional policies [odds ratio (OR) 8.7], operative groups (OR 4.2), at least one full-time nurse (OR 4.6) and a hospital annual plan which specified infection control (OR 2.1) were statistically associated with an active programme in the multivariate analysis.
