The current layout design of a ship engine room not only depends on a skilled designer but also has many design constraints and regulations to be considered. At preliminary design stage CAD systems need to be intelligent in the sense that they must be able to use knowledge to achieve the designer's goal. In this paper, we present an approach to implement a practical knowledge-based system for the machinery layout design of a ship engine room. The knowledge-base is implemented and verified in the actual CAD environment of a ship engine room, named MADES (Machinery Arrangement Design Expert System), which we develop in this study. Design knowledge is represented by object-oriented concept, and nonmonotonic reasoning enables the values of closely related objects to be consistent. The approaches presented in this paper provide a practical example of a knowledge-based system for complex design problems, and can also provide guidance on implementing an integrated design expert system that extends the capability of existing CAD systems.

Lubricant adaptation to design developments will help ensure the production of a more economical, reliable and flexible machinery with higher availability and minimal maintenance requirements. Such developments are conditioned by lubricant properties, which must include detergency/dispersancy and anti-wear.

Low-speed, two-stroke engines have continued their dominance in the area of shipbuilding with low-speed engines propelling more than 70% of ships built in 1998. However, ship owners have been complaining about a decline in the reliability of these engines and designers have responded by developing several modifications which have either already been incorporated into the engine design or are being tested. For example, combustion chambers for the 80-, 90- and 98-cm-bore MAN B&W engines have been modified to address complaints about the inconel heat protection coating on their piston crowns.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries chief engineer Keijiro Tayama believes that the prevalence of low-speed engines among existing fleets will change as fuel cost conflicts with the requirements for lesser noxious emissions. Current low-speed engines were developed and have been relied upon due to their use of low-grade fuel with a maximum sulfur content of 5%. However, sulfur content may be set at a maximum of 3.5% forcing vessels to use cleaner fuel. Future designs for low-speed engines should incorporate fuel use in engine efficiency requirements.

The electronic fuel injection (EFI) is being effectively utilized in the high-speed market and is currently being tested for medium-speed marine engines. EFI effectively limits harmful emissions and provides enhanced reliability, optimized timing and fuel control for all load and speed conditions featuring transient operation.

New engine configurations allow engine crews to change engines to meet the varying power output needs for'sightseeing' speed, normal cruising and high speed modes.
