- Abstract
The ITU/WMO/UNESCO-IOC Joint Task Force for Science Monitoring and Reliable Telecommunications (JTF SMART) is working to integrate environmental sensors into trans-ocean commercial submarine telecommunications cables to construct a global deep ocean observing array. The telecommunication signal along cables is boosted by repeaters every 50-100 km; these will be equipped with pressure and temperature sensors and accelerometers. Real-time ocean-bottom observations will quantify changes in climate, ocean circulation, and sea level, enable life-saving tsunami and earthquake early warning, and yield new insights into tectonic and deep Earth processes. Thus, United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (i.e., SDG 9, 13, 14) are addressed. SMART Cables is an endorsed Project of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. We will review SMART systems and report progress toward realising that vision. Ocean modelling experiments are performed to quantify the benefits of SMART cables for monitoring Essential Ocean Variables and other characteristics. A wet demonstration system will be installed off Sicily in June 2023. Portugal has issued a request for tender for the 100% state-owned domestic CAM system connecting Continental Portugal, Azores, and Madeira in a 3700 km ring with 50 SMART repeaters to be installed in 2025. It is motivated by earthquake and tsunami disaster risk reduction, and improving understanding of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. Further systems in various planning stages include Mediterranean, New Zealand-Chathams, Vanuatu-New Caledonia, Chile-Sydney, Chile-Antarctica, New Zealand-Antarctica, Indonesia, and Trans-Arctic Europe-Japan. Finally, the European Union has included SMART capability in its international submarine cable connectivity program (CEF2)., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Accelerators and Storage Rings - Abstract
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is one of the largest scientific instruments ever built. Since opening up anew energy frontier for exploration in 2010, it has gathered a global user community of about 9000 scientists working in fundamental particle physics and the physics of hadronic matter at extreme temperature and density. To sustain and extend its discovery potential, the LHC will need a major upgrade in the 2020s. This will increase its instantaneous luminosity (rate of collisions) by a factor of five beyond the original design valueand the integrated luminosity (totalnumber of collisions) by a factor ten. The LHC is already a highly complexand exquisitely optimised machine so this upgrade must be carefully conceived and will require new infrastructures(underground and on surface)and over a decade to implement. The new configuration, known as High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), relies on a number of key innovations that push accelerator technology beyond its present limits. Among these are cutting-edge 11–12Tesla superconducting magnets, compact superconducting cavities for beam rotation with ultra-precise phase control, new technology and physical processes for beam collimation and 100 metre-long high-power superconducting links with negligible energy dissipation, all of which required several years of dedicated R&D; effort on a global international level. The present document describes the technologies and components that will be used to realise the projectand is intended to serve as the basis for the detailed engineering design of the HL-LHC.

International audience; Understanding micro-seismicity is a critical question for earthquake hazard assessment. Since the devastating earthquakes of Izmit and Duzce in 1999, the seismicity along the submerged section of North Anatolian Fault within the Sea of Marmara (comprising the "Istanbul seismic gap") has been extensively studied in order to infer its mechanical behaviour (creeping vs locked). So far, the seismicity has been interpreted only in terms of being tectonic-driven, although the Main Marmara Fault (MMF) is known to strike across multiple hydrocarbon gas sources. Here, we show that a large number of the aftershocks that followed the M 5.1 earthquake of July, 25th 2011 in the western Sea of Marmara, occurred within a zone of gas overpressuring in the 1.5-5 km depth range, from where pressurized gas is expected to migrate along the MMF, up to the surface sediment layers. Hence, gas-related processes should also be considered for a complete interpretation of the micro-seismicity (similar to M < 3) within the Istanbul offshore domain.

PCC ,Plasma medicine ,Plasma Coagulation Controller - Abstract
Plasma medicine is an emerging field among the broad spectrum of plasma science applications. It deals with the use of cold plasmas produced at atmospheric pressure in order to obtain a therapeutic effect on living matter. The most studied fields of application at present include disinfection, wound healing, blood coagulation and cancer cell treatment. The driving idea of plasma medicine is to perform a very localized and non-thermal treatment at the human/animal body substrate. In this contribution, through several in-vitro and in-vivo tests, we describe the effect on blood coagulation (BC) of the application of a cold atmospheric plasma source, called Plasma Coagulation Controller (PCC), specifically designed and developed for this purpose [1]. In this context, our aim was to develop a new device to exploit the pro-coagulant effect of locally delivery plasma and to test its efficacy in accelerating blood coagulation and inhibiting tissue bleeding.

Copper electrodeposition on a conically shaped copper or iron electrode was studied under the influence of a vertical magnetic field. Numerical simulations were conducted to provide understanding of the interaction between the magnetic forces and the buoyancy force involved in the deposition process. The secondary flow caused by the Lorentz force is directed downward towards the cone, which is counteracted by the buoyancy force as the cathode is placed at the bottom of the electrochemical cell. For the iron cone, the magnetic gradient force can perceptibly enhance the local downward flow and is thus supporting conical growth, which indicates potential benefits of using magnetic fields in electrodeposition processes.

- Abstract
Plasma medicine is a new applicative field stemming from the broader plasma science. It deals with the use of cold plasmas produced at atmospheric pressure in order to obtain a therapeutic effect on living matter. At present, disinfection, wound healing, blood coagulation and cancer cell treatment are the emerging fields of application. The driving idea of plasma medicine is to have a very localized and non-thermal (few Watts of power) treatment of the body substrate. In this contribution we present the main features of a prototype of non-thermal plasma source that we specifically designed for accelerating blood coagulation: the Plasma Coagulation Controller (PCC) is based on a Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) that can use either helium or argon as the working gas. The device is controlled by a microcontroller and can be supplied by a standard 220 V/50 Hz AC voltage. An AC/DC converter is then used to feed high voltage transformer to 8-9 kV discharge. Effective current on a metallic target is found to be of the order of 1 mA. Emission spectroscopic measurements revealed the chemical features of the generated plasma: the presence of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS and RONS) and of metastable excited states is highlighted in the different PCC operational set-up. The analysis of the rotational OH- and N2 spectra allowed also the estimation of their rotational temperatures, ranging around 300 K. The PCC has been tested in different biological processes, including reactive species production, bacterial removal, and blood coagulation. In particular, the ability of the device to accelerate blood coagulation has been investigated through different experiments. In-vitro tests have been performed on blood samples from patients following anticoagulant therapy and exposed either to air (control samples) or to direct plasma jet for different time points. PCC exposure strongly stimulated formation of blood clots that have been successively analyzed by histological methods. A Western Blot has been also performed in order to investigate the relative activation of proteins involved in blood coagulation, as well as of enzymes involved in the reactive species disposal. In-vivo test on Male Wistar rats have been also performed. Overall, all the experimental results suggest accelerated blood coagulation. Further studies regarding the molecular mechanisms behind this phenomenon are currently ongoing.

PCC ,Plasma medicine ,Plasma Coagulation Controller - Abstract
The development of a biomedical tool able to locally accelerate blood coagulation (BC), especially in patients following an anticoagulant therapy, is a very attractive and challenging goal. In this contribution we present the main features of the Plasma Coagulation Controller (PCC) device, a cold atmospheric pressure plasma source based on the Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) scheme, specifically designed for accelerating blood coagulation. The device is controlled by a microcontroller and can explore different operational parameters in terms of discharge repetition rate (1-20 kHz) and applied voltage (2-8 kV). Effective current measured on a metallic target is of the order of 1 mA and, thus, suitable for application on human body. Helium is used as a working gas though some tests have been performed in Argon for investigating mechanisms behind plasma-living matter interaction. The presence in the PCC plasma jet of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS and RONS) and of metastable excited states is revealed through emission spectroscopic measurements. The analysis of the rotational OH- and N2 spectra allowed also the estimate of their rotational temperatures, ranging around 300 K. Interestingly, ROS and RONS produced by the PCC are able to induce the production of reactive species in cells, as shown in biological tests performed on human fibroblasts, where it was observed a significant increase in the levels of ROS and NO (nitric oxide) compared to the untreated samples. This might give an insight into the molecular mechanism behind the cellular response to the plasma. The ability of PCC device to accelerate BC has been investigated through in-vitro and in-vivo tests. In-vitro tests have been performed on blood samples from patients following anticoagulant therapy and exposed either to air (control samples) or to direct plasma jet for different time points. PCC exposure strongly stimulated formation of blood clots that have been successively analyzed by histological methods. A Western Blot has been also performed in order to investigate the relative activation of proteins involved in BC, as well as of enzymes involved in the reactive species' disposal. In vivo tests have been performed on Male Wistar rats; in particular, the bleeding was induced by a deep cut on both hindlimbs at the same time, and only one was treated by the PCC. The BC was accelerated in the treated area compared to the other side. Finally, the disinfectant effect of the plasma produced with PCC has been tested by treating different bacteria strains (E. coli, S. aureus and P. aeruginosa). Bacteria viability drops under 50% after only 15s of plasma exposure, and keeps decreasing over time until reaching almost 100% of inactivation after 2min. Taken together, our data suggest that the PCC is able to reduce the BC time possibly through the production of reactive species.

Mulberry (Morus latifolia L.) leaves and green tops were utilised to study the palatability and the digestibility in two sheep feeding trials. In trial 1 mulberry palatability was determined by cafeteria test, that studies the animal preferences in a short period of time without the interference of post-ingestive factors. Mulberry leaves were tested in respect to vetch hay and oat concentrate; results showed that mulberry leaves were significantly preferred to other feeds. In trial 2 an in vivo digestibility was carried out on 4 rams equipped with the bags for the faeces collection, housed in individual box and fed ad libitum. Results showed that mulberry leaves and green tops were more digestible (OM: 78.19%; CP: 79.19%: NDF: 77.77%; Cellulose: 88.32%) and with high nutrient value (NEL: 1.61 Mcal kg 1 DM, INRA method; NEL3m: 1.73 Mcal kg 1 DM, NRC method).

Physics::Instrumentation and Detectors ,Astrophysics::Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics - Abstract
Detection of high-energy neutrinos from distant astrophysical sources will open a new window on the Universe. The detection principle exploits the measurement of Cherenkov light emitted by charged particles resulting from neutrino interactions in the matter containing the telescope. A novel multi-PMT digital optical module (DOM) was developed to contain 31 3-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). In order to maximize the detector sensitivity, each PMT will be surrounded by an expansion cone which collects photons that would otherwise miss the photocathode. Results for various angles of incidence with respect to the PMT surface indicate an increase in collection efficiency by 30% on average for angles up to 45° with respect to the perpendicular. Ray-tracing calculations could reproduce the measurements, allowing to estimate an increase in the overall photocathode sensitivity, integrated over all angles of incidence, by 27% (for a single PMT). Prototype DOMs, being built by the KM3NeT consortium, will be equipped with these expansion cones.© 2013 IOP Publishing Ltd and Sissa Medialab srl.

Astrophysics::High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena ,High Energy Physics::Experiment - Abstract
A recent analysis of the Fermi Large Area Telescope data provided evidence for a high-intensity emission of high-energy gamma rays with a E-2 spectrum from two large areas, spanning 50° above and below the Galactic centre (the "Fermi bubbles"). A hadronic mechanism was proposed for this gamma-ray emission making the Fermi bubbles promising source candidates of high-energy neutrino emission. In this work Monte Carlo simulations regarding the detectability of high-energy neutrinos from the Fermi bubbles with the future multi-km3 neutrino telescope KM3NeT in the Mediterranean Sea are presented. Under the hypothesis that the gamma-ray emission is completely due to hadronic processes, the results indicate that neutrinos from the bubbles could be discovered in about one year of operation, for a neutrino spectrum with a cutoff at 100 TeV and a detector with about 6 km3 of instrumented volume. The effect of a possible lower cutoff is also considered. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

- Abstract
We carried out a combined geophysical and gas-geochemical survey on an active fault strand along the North Anatolian Fault (NAF) system in the Gulf of İzmit (eastern Sea of Marmara), providing for the first time in this area data on the distribution of methane (CH4) and other gases dissolved in the bottom seawater, as well as the CH4isotopic composition. Based on high-resolution morphobathymetric data and chirp-sonar seismic reflection profiles we selected three areas with different tectonic features associated to the NAF system, where we performed visual and instrumental seafloor inspections, including in situ measurements of dissolved CH4, and sampling of the bottom water. Starting from background values of 2–10 nM, methane concentration in the bottom seawater increases abruptly up to 20 nM over the main NAF trace. CH4 concentration peaks up to ∼120 nM were detected above mounds related probably to gas and fluids expulsion. Methane is microbial (δ13CCH4: −67.3 and −76‰ versus VPDB), and was found mainly associated with pre-Holocene deposits topped by a 10–20 m thick draping of marine mud. The correlation between tectonic structures and gas-seepages at the seafloor suggests that the NAF in the Gulf of İzmit could represent a key site for long-term combined monitoring of fluid exhalations and seismicity to assess their potential as earthquake precursors.
