We present a broad analysis of X-ray polarimetric observational prospects for radio-quiet active galactic nuclei (AGN), focusing on the role of parsec-scale components. We provide a revision of self-consistent type-1 and type-2 generic AGN radiative transfer models that were obtained with a Monte Carlo code stokes , evaluating the effects of absorption and scattering. Our model consists of a central disc–corona emission obtained with the kynstokes code in the lamp-post geometry, an equatorial wedge-shaped dusty torus and two symmetric conical polar outflows. We argue that the information on the mutual orientation, shape, relative size, and composition of such components, usually obtained from spectroscopy or polarimetry in other wavelengths, is essential for the X-ray polarization analysis of the obscured type-2 AGNs. We provide general detectability prospects for AGNs with 2–8 keV polarimeters onboard of the currently flying Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) satellite and the forthcoming enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission. We present the expected X-ray polarization signal resulting from distant reprocessing material around black holes. Using a central isotropic power-law emission at the centre of the simulated model, we add distant equatorial and axially symmetric media that are covering the central accreting sources. We include partial ionization and partial transparency effects, and the impact of various polarization and steepness of the primary radiation spectrum. The results are obtained with the Monte Carlo code STOKES that considers both line and continuum processes and computes the effects of scattering and absorption inside static homogenous wedge-shaped and elliptical toroidal structures, varying in relative size, composition and distance to the source. We provide first order estimates for parsec-scale reprocessing in Compton-thin and Compton-thick active galactic nuclei, as well as winds around accreting stellar-mass compact objects, for observer's inclinations above and below the grazing angle. The resulting reprocessed polarization can reach tens of per cent with either parallel or perpendicular orientation with respect to the axis of symmetry, depending on subtle details of the geometry, density, and ionization structure. We also show how principal parameters constrained from X-ray spectroscopy or polarimetry in other wavelengths can lift the shown degeneracies in X-ray polarization. We provide an application example of the broad modelling discussion by revisiting the recent IXPE 2–8 keV X-ray polarimetric observation of the accreting stellar-mass black hole in Cygnus X-3 from the perspective of partial transparency and ionization of the obscuring outflows. This article discusses the role of pneumatic balloon dilation (PD) as a treatment for achalasia in regions where peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) is less accessible. The study conducted a retrospective analysis of patients with achalasia who underwent PD at a single center. The results showed that PD was effective in improving symptoms, with a drop in the Eckardt score at 3 months, and had a good safety profile. We present a series of numerical models suitable for X-ray polarimetry of accreting systems. First, we provide a spectropolarimetric routine that integrates reflection from inner optically thick walls of a geometrical torus of arbitrary size viewed under general inclination. In the studied example, the equatorial torus is illuminated by a central isotropic source of X-ray power-law emission, representing a hot corona. Nearly neutral reprocessing inside the walls is precomputed by Monte Carlo code stokes that incorporates both line and continuum processes, including multiple scatterings and absorption. We created a new xspec model, called xsstokes , which in this version enables efficient X-ray polarimetric fitting of the torus parameters, observer's inclination and primary emission properties, interpolating for arbitrary state of primary polarization. Comparison of the results to a Monte Carlo simulation allowing partial transparency shows that the no-transparency condition may induce different polarization by tens of per cent. Allowing partial transparency leads to lower/higher polarization fraction, if the resulting polarization orientation is perpendicular/parallel to the rotation axis. We provide another version of xsstokes that is suitable for approximating nearly neutral reflection from a distant optically thick disc of small geometrical thickness. It assumes local illumination averaged for a selected range of incident angles, representing a toy model of a diffuse corona of various physical extent. Assessing both xsstokes variants, we conclude that the resulting polarization can be tens of per cent and perpendicularly/parallelly oriented towards the rotation axis, if the reflecting medium is rather vertically/equatorially distributed with respect to a compact central source. Summary: FRAX® calculates the 10-year probability of major osteoporotic fractures (MOF), which are considered to have a greater clinical impact than other fractures. Our results suggest that, in postmenopausal women with severe osteoporosis, those treated with teriparatide had a 60% lower risk of FRAX®-defined MOF compared with those treated with risedronate. Introduction: The VERO trial was an active-controlled fracture endpoint clinical trial that enrolled postmenopausal women with severe osteoporosis. After 24 months, a 52% reduction in the hazard ratio (HR) of clinical fractures was reported in patients randomized to teriparatide compared with risedronate. We examined fracture results restricted to FRAX®-defined major osteoporotic fractures (MOF), which include clinical vertebral, hip, humerus, and forearm fractures. Methods: In total, 1360 postmenopausal women (mean age 72.1 years) were randomized to receive subcutaneous daily teriparatide (20 μg) or oral weekly risedronate (35 mg). Patient cumulative incidence of ≥ 1 FRAX®-defined MOF and of all clinical fractures were estimated by Kaplan-Meier analyses, and the comparison between treatments was based on the stratified log-rank test. Additionally, an extended Cox model was used to estimate HRs at different time points. Incidence fracture rates were estimated at each 6-month interval. Results: After 24 months, 16 (2.6%) patients in the teriparatide group had ≥ 1 low trauma FRAX®-defined MOF compared with 40 patients (6.4%) in the risedronate group (HR 0.40; 95% CI 0.23–0.68; p = 0.001). Clinical vertebral and radius fractures were the most frequent FRAX®-defined MOF sites. The largest difference in incidence rates of both FRAX®-defined MOF and all clinical fractures between treatments occurred during the 6- to 12-month period. There was a statistically significant reduction in fractures between groups as early as 7 months for both categories of clinical fractures analyzed. Conclusion: In postmenopausal women with severe osteoporosis, treatment with teriparatide was more efficacious than risedronate, with a 60% lower risk of FRAX®-defined MOF during the 24-month treatment period. NGC 4151 is among the most well-studied Seyfert galaxies that does not suffer from strong obscuration along the observer's line of sight. This allows to probe the central active galactic nucleus (AGN) engine with photometry, spectroscopy, reverberation mapping, or interferometry. Yet, the broad-band polarization from NGC 4151 has been poorly examined in the past despite the fact that polarimetry gives us a much cleaner view of the AGN physics than photometry or spectroscopy alone. In this paper, we compile the 0.15–89.0  μ m total and polarized fluxes of NGC 4151 from archival and new data in order to examine the physical processes at work in the heart of this AGN. We demonstrate that, from the optical to the near-infrared (IR) band, the polarized spectrum of NGC 4151 shows a much bluer power-law spectral index than that of the total flux, corroborating the presence of an optically thick, locally heated accretion flow, at least in its near-IR emitting radii. Specific signatures from the atmosphere of the accretion structure are tentatively found at the shortest ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths, before the onset of absorption opacity. Otherwise, dust scattering appears to be the dominant contributor from the near-UV to near-IR polarized spectrum, superimposed on to a weaker electron component. We also identify a change in the polarization processes from the near-IR to the mid-IR, most likely associated with the transition from Mie scattering to dichroic absorption from aligned dust grains in the dusty torus or narrow-line region. Context. Some Type-1 active galactic nuclei (AGN) show extremely asymmetric Balmer lines with the broad peak redshifted or blueshifted by thousands of km s−1. These AGN may be good candidates for supermassive binary black holes (SMBBHs). The complex line shapes can be due to the complex kinematics of the two broad line regions (BLRs). Therefore other methods should be applied to confirm the SMBBHs. One of them is spectropolarimetry. Aims. We rely on numerical modeling of the polarimetry of binary black holes systems, since polarimetry is highly sensitive to geometry, in order to find the specific influence of supermassive binary black hole (SMBBH) geometry and dynamics on polarized parameters across the broad line profiles. We apply our method to SMBBHs in which both components are assumed to be AGN with distances at the subparsec scale. Methods. We used a Monte Carlo radiative transfer code that simulates the geometry, dynamics, and emission pattern of a binary system where two black holes are getting increasingly close. Each gravitational well is accompanied by its own BLR and the whole system is surrounded by an accretion flow from the distant torus. We examined the emission line deformation and predicted the associated polarization that could be observed. Results. We modeled scattering-induced broad line polarization for various BLR geometries with complex kinematics. We find that the presence of SMBBHs can produce complex polarization angle profiles φ and strongly affect the polarized and unpolarized line profiles. Depending on the phase of the SMBBH, the resulting double-peaked emission lines either show red or blue peak dominance, or both the peaks can have the same intensity. In some cases, the whole line profile appears as a single Gaussian line, hiding the true nature of the source. Conclusions. Our results suggest that future observation with the high resolution spectropolarimetry of optical broad emission lines could play an important role in detecting subparsec SMBBHs. X-ray observations of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) show variability on time-scales ranging from a few hours up to a few days. Some of this variability may be associated with occultation events by clouds in the broad-line region. In this work, we aim to model the spectral and polarization variability arising from X-ray obscuration events, serving as probes of the relativistic effects that dominate the emission from the innermost regions. We show that asymmetries can be clearly detected in the AGNs spectra as the cloud is shading different parts of the accretion disc. We also show that these effects can be detected in the temporal evolution of the polarization degree (P) and the polarization position angle (Ψ). The variations in P and Ψ are highly dependent on the inclination of the system, the position of the primary source and its intrinsic polarization. Considering the disc-corona system only, for an inclination θ = 30° (60°), P increases up to ∼20 per cent (30 per cent) in the 4–8 keV band, when the unpolarized primary source is obscured. However, after accounting for the contribution of parsec-scale material scattering the light in our line of sight (narrow-line region and molecular torus), the variability is smoothed out and the polarization degree can be reduced down to $${\sim } 1{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$$ (2 per cent). Our results suggest that the study of eclipses in AGNs with the next generation of X-ray spectral and polarimetric missions could provide unique information on the physics and structure of the innermost regions as well as of the parsec-scale material. We create the first broad-band polarization spectrum of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) by compiling the 0.1–100 $$\mu$$ m, 4.9, and 15 GHz continuum polarization of NGC 1068 from more than 50 yr of observations. Despite the diversity of instruments and apertures, the observed spectrum of linear continuum polarization has distinctive wavelength-dependent signatures that can be related to the AGN and host galaxy physics. The impact of the Big Blue bump and infrared bump, together with electron, Mie scattering, dichroism, and synchrotron emission are naturally highlighted in polarization, allowing us to reveal the type-1 AGN core inside this type-2 object with unprecedented precision. In order to isolate the AGN component, we reconstruct the spectral energy distribution of NGC 1068 and estimate the fraction of diluting light in the observed continuum flux. This allows us to clearly and independently show that, in the case of NGC 1068, Thomson scattering is the dominant mechanism for the polarization in the optical band. We also investigate the effect of aperture on the observed polarization and confirm previous findings on the extension of the narrow line region of NGC 1068 and on the B -band and K -band polarization from the host. Finally, we do not detect statistically significant aperture-corrected polarimetric variations over the last 52 yr, suggesting that the parsec-scale morphological and magnetic geometries probably remained stable for more than half a century. Type 1 radio-quiet active galactic nuclei (AGN) are seen from the polar direction and offer a direct view of their central X-ray engine. If most of X-ray photons have travelled from the primary source to the observer with minimum light–matter interaction, a fraction of radiation is emitted at different directions and is reprocessed by the parsec-scale equatorial circumnuclear region or the polar outflows. It is still unclear how much the polarization expected from type 1 AGN is affected by radiation that have scattered on the distant AGN components. In this paper, we examine the contribution of remote material on to the polarized X-ray spectrum of type 1 Seyfert galaxies (Seyfert-1s) using radiative transfer Monte Carlo codes. We find that the observed X-ray polarization strongly depends on the initial polarization emerging from the disc–corona system. For unpolarized and parallelly polarized photons (parallel to the disc), the contribution is negligible below 3 keV and tends to increase the polarization degree by up to one percentage points at higher energies, smoothing out the energy-dependent variations of the polarization angle. For perpendicularly polarized corona photons, the addition of the circumnuclear scattered (parallel) component adds to the polarization above 10 keV, decreases polarization below 10 keV and shifts the expected 90° rotation of the polarization angle to lower energies. In conclusion, we found that simulations of Seyfert-1s that do not account for reprocessing on the parsec-scale equatorial and polar material are under- or overestimating the X-ray polarization by 0.1–1 percentage points. Context. From stars to active galactic nuclei, many astrophysical systems are surrounded by an equatorial distribution of dusty material that is, in a number of cases, spatially unresolved even with cutting edge facilities. Aims. In this paper, we investigate if and how one can determine the unresolved and heterogeneous morphology of dust distribution around a central bright source using time-resolved polarimetric observations. Methods. We used polarized radiative transfer simulations to study a sample of circumnuclear dusty morphologies. We explored a grid of geometrically variable models that are uniform, fragmented, and density stratified in the near-infrared, optical, and ultraviolet bands, and we present their distinctive time-dependent polarimetric signatures. Results. As expected, varying the structure of the obscuring equatorial disk has a deep impact on the inclination-dependent flux, polarization degree and angle, and time lags we observe.We find that stratified media are distinguishable by time-resolved polarimetric observations, and that the expected polarization is much higher in the infrared band than in the ultraviolet. However, because of the physical scales imposed by dust sublimation, the average time lags of months to years between the total and polarized fluxes are important; these time lags lengthens the observational campaigns necessary to break more sophisticated, and therefore also more degenerated, models. In the ultraviolet band, time lags are slightly shorter than in the infrared or optical bands, and, coupled to lower diluting starlight fluxes, time-resolved polarimetry in the UV appears more promising for future campaigns. Conclusions. Equatorial dusty disks differ in terms of inclination-dependent photometric, polarimetric, and timing observables, but only the coupling of these different markers can lead to inclination-independent constraints on the unresolved structures. Infrared, optical and ultraviolet spectropolarimetric observations have proven to be ideal tools for the study of the hidden nuclei of type 2 active galactic nuclei (AGN) and for constraining the composition and morphology of the sub-parsec scale emission components. In this paper, we extend the analysis to the polarization of the X-rays from type 2 AGN. Combining two radiative transfer codes, we performed the first simulations of photons originating in the gravity-dominated vicinity of the black hole and scattering in structures all the way out to the parsec-scale torus and polar winds. We demonstrate that, when strong gravity effects are accounted for, the X-ray polarimetric signal of Seyfert-2s carries as much information about the central AGN components as spectropolarimetric observations of Seyfert-1s. The spectropolarimetric measurements can constrain the spin of the central supermassive black hole even in edge-on AGN, the hydrogen column density along the observer's line-of-sight and the composition of the polar outflows. However, the polarization state of the continuum source is washed out by multiple scattering, and should not be measurable unless the initial polarization is exceptionally strong. Finally, we estimate that modernX-ray polarimeters, either based on the photoelectric effect or on Compton scattering, will require long observational times on the order of a couple of megaseconds to be able to properly measure the polarization of type 2 AGN. Purpose: To report the mid-term outcomes of percutaneous cryoablation (PCA) performed as second-line therapeutic option of venous malformations (VM).Material and Methods: From 2011 to 2015, PCA was offered in 24 patients (mean age: 31 years, range: 12-64) as second-line treatment for recurrence of symptoms after sclerotherapy and when resection was not possible (due to lesion location or previous failure) or refused by the patient. Adverse effects were recorded, disease-free survival (DFS) and local tissue control (LTC) rates were calculated based on symptoms and volume evolution.Results: Mean follow-up was 18.7 months (6-48). Nine (37.5%, 9/24) adverse effects occurred and three (12.5%, 3/24) were severe. Mean pain assessed by visual analog scale (VAS) was 41.7 mm (0-80) before treatment and 20.3 mm (0-80) (p=0.01) after. Mean volume decreased significantly after treatment from 22.4 cm3 (0.9-146) to 8.35 cm3 (0-81.3) (p<0.001). Pain recurred in nine patients and size of one lesion increased. The DFS and LTC rates were 54% [95%CI: 22.94-77.27] and 93.33% [61.26-99.03] at 24 months, respectively. Only VM volume >10 cm3 was associated with a higher risk of local recurrence (p=0.05).Conclusion: PCA as second-line treatment appears to be safe and effective for local control of VM according to mid-term results.Key Points: • Percutaneous cryoablation of venous malformations appeared well tolerated. • Size of venous malformations decreased significantly after percutaneous cryoablation (p<0.001). • Pain decreased significantly after percutaneous cryoablation of venous malformations (p=0.01). Several clinical trials have produced conflicting results regarding the benefit of antioxidants in cancer therapy thus questioning the incorporation of these substances in standard treatment regimens. Vitamins E and C, selenium, carotenoids, lycopene, soy products, and green tea extract are a few substances with antioxidant properties that have been studied in detail. This article reviews the results generated over the last 20 years through in vitro and in vivo studies in various types of cancers and stages of cancer treatment. Despite the commercial popularity and the multitude of studies examining antioxidant therapy, the true role of antioxidants is yet to be determined, requiring further investigation into its propagative, causal, or protective nature. The misalignment of the gears is one of the main causes of premature failure in gear transmissions. This misalignment can be caused by different phenomena where the deformation of the elastic elements of the transmission usually has a major importance. In this paper, a pinion and rack transmission is used to investigate the misalignment of the pinion produced by the deflection of both shaft and bearings, focusing in the contribution of the bearings to this misalignment. For this task, a design space with 261 different cases of pinion and rack transmission has been explored. For each case, a realistic 3D FEM model (including gears, shaft and roller bearings) has been created and the coupled structural and contact problem has been solved. From the results of the FEM models, the different parameters of misalignment of the pinion have been computed and analyzed through five studies. These studies revealed the high importance of the elasticity of the bearings in the misalignment of the pinion and, in general, the important error that can be assumed when the bearings are not included in the structural models of gear transmissions. Together with accretion and evolution, orientation is one of the three main drivers in the grand unification of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Being unresolved, determining the true inclination of those powerful sources is always difficult and indirect, yet it remains a vital clue to apprehend the numerous, panchromatic and complex spectroscopic features we detect. There have only been 100 inclinations derived so far; in this context, can we be sure that we measure the true orientation of AGNs? To answer this question, four methods to estimate the nuclear inclination of AGNs are investigated and compared to inclination-dependent observables (hydrogen column density, Balmer linewidth, optical polarization and flux ratios within the infrared and relative to X-rays). Among these orientation indicators, the method developed by Fisher, Crenshaw, Kraemer, and others, mapping and modelling the radial velocities of the [OIII] emission region in AGNs, is the most successful. The [OIII]-mapping technique shows highly statistically significant correlations at >95 per cent confidence level for rejecting the null hypothesis for all the test cases. Such results confirm that the unified model is correct at a scale ranging from kiloparsec to a fraction of a parsec. However, at a radial distance less than 0.01 pc from the central black hole, warps and misalignments may change this picture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. A growing body of evidence suggests that some, if not all, scattering regions of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are clumpy. The inner AGN components cannot be spatially resolved with current instruments and must be studied by numerical simulations of observed spectroscopy and polarization data. Aims. We run radiative transfer models in the optical/UV for a variety of AGN reprocessing regions with di erent distributions of clumpy scattering media. We obtain geometry-sensitive polarization spectra and images to improve our previous AGN models and their comparison with the observations. Methods. We use the latest public version 1.2 of the Monte Carlo code stokes presented in the first two papers of this series to model AGN reprocessing regions of increasing morphological complexity. We replace previously uniform-density media with up to thousands of constant-density clumps. We couple a continuum source to fragmented equatorial scattering regions, polar outflows, and toroidal obscuring dust regions and investigate a wide range of geometries. We also consider different levels of fragmentation in each scattering region to evaluate the importance of fragmentation for the net polarization of the AGN. Results. In comparison with uniform-density models, equatorial distributions of gas and dust clouds result in grayer spectra and show a decrease in the net polarization percentage at all lines of sight. The resulting polarization position angle depends on the morphology of the clumpy structure, with extended tori favoring parallel polarization while compact tori produce orthogonal polarization position angles. In the case of polar scattering regions, fragmentation increases the net polarization unless the cloud filling factor is small. A complete AGN model constructed from the individual, fragmented regions can produce low polarization percentages (<2%), with a parallel polarization angle for observer inclinations up to 70° for a torus half opening angle of 60°. For type-2 viewing angles the polarization switches to perpendicular and rises to ~50%. Conclusions. Our modeling shows that the introduction of fragmented dusty tori significantly alters the resulting net polarization of an AGN. Comparison of our models to polarization observations of large AGN samples greatly favors geometrically compact clumpy tori over extended ones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. A fraction of active galactic nuclei (AGN) show dramatic X-ray spectral changes on the day-to-week time scales associated with variation in the line of sight of the cold absorber. Aims. We intend to model the polarization fluctuations arising from an obscuration event, thereby offering a method of determining whether flux variations are due to occultation or extreme intrinsic emission variability. Methods. Undertaking 1-100 keV polarimetric simulations with the Monte Carlo code Stokes, we simulated the journey of a variety of cold gas clouds in front of an extended primary source. We varied the hydrogen column density nH and size of the absorber, as well as the initial polarization state of the emitting source, to cover a wide range of scenarios. Results. Simulations indicate that different results are expected according to the initial polarization of the extended continuum source. For unpolarized primary fluxes, large (~50°) variations of the polarization position angle are expected before and after an occultation event, which is associated with very low residual polarization degrees (P ≪ 1%). In the case of an emitting disk with intrinsic, position-independent polarization, and for a given range of parameters, X-ray eclipses significantly alter the observed polarization spectra, with most of the variations seen in ѱ. Finally, non-uniformly polarized emitting regions produce very distinctive polarization variations due to the successive covering and uncovering of different portions of the disk. Plotted against time, variations in P and ѱ form detectable P Cygni type profiles that are distinctive signatures of non-axisymmetric emission. Conclusions. We find that X-ray polarimetry is particularly adapted to probing X-ray eclipses due to Compton-thin and Comptonthick gas clouds. Polarization measurements would distinguish between intrinsic intensity fluctuations and external eclipsing events, constrain the geometry of the covering medium, and test the hypothesis of non-uniformly emitting disks predicted by general relativity. Asymmetric, broad iron lines are a common feature in the X-ray spectra of both X-ray binaries (XRBs) and type-1 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). It was suggested that the distortion of the Fe K α emission results from Doppler and relativistic effects affecting the radiative transfer close to the strong gravitational well of the central compact object: a stellar mass black hole (BH) or neutron star (NS) in the case of XRBs, or a super massive black hole (SMBH) in the case of AGN. However, alternative approaches based on reprocessing and transmission of radiation through surrounding media also attempt to explain the line broadening. So far, spectroscopic and timing analyzes have not yet convinced the whole community to discriminate between the two scenarios. Here we study to which extent X-ray polarimetric measurements of black hole X-ray binaries (BHXRBs) and type-1 AGN could help to identify the possible origin of the line distortion. To do so, we report on recent simulations obtained for the two BH flavors and show that the proposed scenarios are found to behave differently in polarization degree and polarization angle. A relativistic origin for the distortion is found to be more probable in the context of BHXRBs, supporting the idea that the same mechanism should lead the way also for AGN. Despite past panchromatic observations of the innermost part of the Milky Way, the overall structure of the Galactic Centre (GC) remains enigmatic in terms of geometry. In this paper, we aim to show how polarimetry can probe the three-dimensional position of the molecular material in the central ∼100 pc of the GC. We investigate a model where the central supermassive black hole Sgr A* is radiatively coupled to a fragmented circumnuclear disc (CND), an elliptical twisted ring representative of the central molecular zone (CMZ), and the two main, bright molecular clouds Sgr B2 and Sgr C. 8–35 keV integrated polarization mapping reveals that Sgr B2 and Sgr C, situated at the two sides of the CMZ, present the highest polarization degrees (66.5 and 47.8 per cent, respectively), both associated with a polarization position angle ψ = 90° (normal to the scattering plane). The CND shows a lower polarization degree, 1.0 per cent with ψ = −20 $_{.}^{\circ}$5, tracing the inclination of the CND with respect to the Galactic plane. The CMZ polarization is spatially variable. We also consider a range of spatial locations for Sgr A* and the reprocessing media, and investigate how the modelled three-dimensional geometry influences the resulting GC polarization. The two reflection nebulae are found to always produce high polarization degrees (≫10 per cent). We show that a 500 ks observation with a broad-band polarimeter could constrain the location and the morphology of the scattering material with respect to the emitting source, revealing the past activity of Sgr A*. The treatment for cervical cancer is a complex, multidisciplinary issue, which applies according to the stage of the disease. The surgical elective treatment of cervical cancer is represented by the radical abdominal hysterectomy. In time, many surgeons perfected this surgical technique; the ones who stood up for this idea were Thoma lonescu and Ernst Wertheim. There are many varieties of radical hysterectomies performed by using the abdominal method and some of them through vaginal and mixed way. Each method employed has advantages and disadvantages. At present, there are three classifications of radical hysterectomies which are used for the simplification of the surgical protocols: Piver-Rutledge-Smith classification which is the oldest, GCG-EORTC classification and Querlow and Morrow classification. The last is the most evolved and recent classification; its techniques can be adapted for conservative operations and for different types of surgical approaches: abdominal, vaginal, laparoscopic or robotic. Rationale The current standard surgical treatment for the cervix and uterine cancer is the radical hysterectomy (lymphadenohysterocolpectomy). This has the risk of intraoperative accidents and postoperative associated morbidity. Objective The purpose of this article is the evaluation and quantification of the associated complications in comparison to the postoperative morbidity which resulted after different types of radical hysterectomy. Methods and results Patients were divided according to the type of surgery performed as follows: for cervical cancer - group A- 37 classic radical hysterectomies Class III Piver - Rutledge -Smith ( PRS), group B -208 modified radical hysterectomies Class II PRS and for uterine cancer- group C -79 extended hysterectomies with pelvic lymphadenectomy from which 17 patients with paraaortic lymphnode biopsy. All patients performed preoperative radiotherapy and 88 of them associated radiosensitization. Discussion Early complications were intra-abdominal bleeding ( 2.7% Class III PRS vs 0.48% Class II PRS), supra-aponeurotic hematoma ( 5.4% III vs 2.4% II) , dynamic ileus (2.7% III vs 0.96% II) and uro - genital fistulas (5.4% III vs 0.96% ll).The late complications were the bladder dysfunction (21.6% III vs 16.35% II) , lower limb lymphedema (13.5% III vs 11.5% II), urethral strictures (10.8% III vs 4.8% li) , incisional hernias ( 8.1% III vs 7.2% II), persistent pelvic pain (18.91% III vs 7.7% II), bowel obstruction (5.4% III vs 1.4% II) and deterioration of sexual function (83.3% III vs 53.8% II). PRS class II radical hysterectomy is associated with fewer complications than PRS class III radical hysterectomy , except for the complications of lymphadenectomy . A new method that might reduce these complications is a selective lymphadenectomy represented by sentinel node biopsy . In conclusion PRS class II radical hysterectomy associated with neoadjuvant radiotherapy is a therapeutic option for the incipient stages of cervical cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Changes of the bone formation marker PINP correlated positively with improvements in vertebral strength in men with glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIO) who received 18-month treatment with teriparatide, but not with risedronate. These results support the use of PINP as a surrogate marker of bone strength in GIO patients treated with teriparatide. Introduction: To investigate the correlations between biochemical markers of bone turnover and vertebral strength estimated by finite element analysis (FEA) in men with GIO. Methods: A total of 92 men with GIO were included in an 18-month, randomized, open-label trial of teriparatide (20 μg/day, n = 45) and risedronate (35 mg/week, n = 47). High-resolution quantitative computed tomography images of the 12th thoracic vertebra obtained at baseline, 6 and 18 months were converted into digital nonlinear FE models and subjected to anterior bending, axial compression and torsion. Stiffness and strength were computed for each model and loading mode. Serum biochemical markers of bone formation (amino-terminal-propeptide of type I collagen [PINP]) and bone resorption (type I collagen cross-linked C-telopeptide degradation fragments [CTx]) were measured at baseline, 3 months, 6 months and 18 months. A mixed-model of repeated measures analysed changes from baseline and between-group differences. Spearman correlations assessed the relationship between changes from baseline of bone markers with FEA variables. Results: PINP and CTx levels increased in the teriparatide group and decreased in the risedronate group. FEA-derived parameters increased in both groups, but were significantly higher at 18 months in the teriparatide group. Significant positive correlations were found between changes from baseline of PINP at 3, 6 and 18 months with changes in FE strength in the teriparatide-treated group, but not in the risedronate group. Conclusions: Positive correlations between changes in a biochemical marker of bone formation and improvement of biomechanical properties support the use of PINP as a surrogate marker of bone strength in teriparatide-treated GIO patients. Context. The innermost parts of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are believed to be comprised of several emission and scattering media coupled by radiative processes. These regions generally cannot be spatially resolved. Spectropolarimetric observations give important information about the reprocessing geometry. Aims. We aim to obtain a coherent model of the polarization signature resulting from the radiative coupling between the components, to compare our results with polarimetry of thermal AGNs, and thereby to put constraints on the geometry. Methods. We used a new public version of stokes, a Monte Carlo radiative transfer code presented in the first paper of this series. The code has been significantly improved for computational speed and polarization imaging has been implemented. The imaging capability helps to improve understanding of the contributions of different components to the spatially-integrated flux. We coupled continuum sources with a variety of reprocessing regions such as equatorial scattering regions, polar outflows, and toroidal obscuring dust and studied the resulting polarization. We explored combinations and computed a grid of thermal AGN models for different halfopening angles of the torus and polar winds. We also considered a range of optical depths for equatorial and polar electron scattering and investigated how the model geometry influences the type-1/type-2 polarization dichotomy for thermal AGNs (type-1 AGNs tend to be polarized parallel to the axis of the torus while type-2 AGNs tend to be polarized perpendicular to it). Results. We put new constrains on the inflowing medium within the inner walls of the torus. To reproduce the observed polarization in type-1 objects, the inflow should be confined to the common equatorial plane of the torus and the accretion disk and have a radial optical depth of 1 < τ < 3. Our modeling of type-1 AGNs indicates that the torus is more likely to have a large (>60°) half-opening angle. Polarization perpendicular to the axis of the torus may arise at a type-1 viewing angle for a torus half-opening angle of 30°-45° or polar outflows with an optical depth near unity. Our modeling suggests that most Seyfert-2 AGN must have a half-opening angle >60° to match the expected level of perpendicular polarization. If outflows are collimated by the torus inner walls, they must not be optically thick (τ < 1) to preserve the polarization dichotomy. Then, varying the wind's optical depth does not affect the degree of polarization of type-2 thermal AGNs but it has a significant impact on the type-1/type-2 polarization dichotomy when τ > 0.3. ABSTRACT We present modelling of X-ray polarization spectra emerging from the two competing scenarios that are proposed to explain the broad Fe Kα line in the Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG-6-30-15. The polarization signature of complex absorption is studied for a partial covering scenario using a clumpy wind and compared to a reflection model based on the lamppost geometry. The shape of the polarization percentage and angle as a function of photon energy are found to be distinctly different between the reflection and the absorption cases. Relativistic reflection produces significantly stronger polarization in the 1-10 keV energy band than absorption. The spectrum of the polarization angle adds additional constraints: in the absorption case it shows a constant shape, whereas the relativistic reflection scenario typically leads to a smooth rotation of the polarization angle with photon energy. Based on this work, we conclude that a soft X-ray polarimeter onboard a small X-ray satellite may already discriminate between the absorption and the reflection scenarios. A promising opportunity may arise with the X-ray Imaging Polarimetry Explorer mission, which has been proposed to the European Space Agency in response to a small-size (S-class) mission call due for launch in 2017. For patients with patterns ranging out of anthropometric standard values, patient-specific musculoskeletal modelling becomes crucial for clinical diagnosis and follow-up. However, patient-specific modelling using imaging techniques and motion capture systems is mainly subject to experimental errors. The aim of this study was to quantify these experimental errors when performing a patient-specific musculoskeletal model. CT scan data were used to personalise the geometrical model and its inertial properties for a post polio residual paralysis subject. After having performed a gait-based experimental protocol, kinematics data were measured using a VICON motion capture system with six infrared cameras. The musculoskeletal model was computed using a direct/inverse algorithm (LifeMod software). A first source of errors was identified in the segmentation procedure in relation to the calculation of personalised inertial parameters. The second source of errors was subject related, as it depended on the reproducibility of performing the same type of gait. The impact of kinematics, kinetics and muscle forces resulting from the musculoskeletal modelling was quantified using relative errors and the absolute root mean square error. Concerning the segmentation procedure, we found that the kinematics results were not sensitive to the errors (relative error < 1%). However, a strong influence was noted on the kinetics results (deviation up to 71%). Furthermore, the reproducibility error showed a significant influence (relative mean error varying from 5 to 30%). The present paper demonstrates that in patient-specific musculoskeletal modelling variations due to experimental errors derived from imaging techniques and motion capture need to be both identified and quantified. Summary: We report the changes in biochemical markers of bone formation during the first 6 months of teriparatide therapy in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis according to previous antiresorptive treatment. Prior therapy does not adversely affect the response to teriparatide treatment. Similar bone markers levels are reached after 6 months of treatment. Introduction: The response of biochemical markers of bone turnover with teriparatide therapy in subjects who have previously received osteoporosis drugs is not fully elucidated. We examined biochemical markers of bone formation in women with osteoporosis treated with teriparatide and determined: (1) whether the response is associated with prior osteoporosis therapy, (2) which marker shows the best performance for detecting a response to therapy, and (3) the correlations between early changes in bone markers and subsequent bone mineral density (BMD) changes after 24 months of teriparatide. Methods: We conducted a prospective, open-label, 24-month study at 95 centers in 10 countries in 758 postmenopausal women with established osteoporosis (n = 181 treatment-naïve) who had at least one post-baseline bone marker determination. Teriparatide (20 μg/day) was administered for up to 24 months. We measured procollagen type I N-terminal propeptide (PINP), bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (b-ALP), and total alkaline phosphatase (t-ALP) at baseline, 1 and 6 months, and change in BMD at the lumbar spine, total hip and femoral neck from baseline to 24 months. Results: Significant increases in formation markers occurred after 1 month of teriparatide regardless of prior osteoporosis therapy. The absolute increase at 1 month was lower in previously treated versus treatment-naïve patients, but after 6 months all groups reached similar levels. PINP showed the best signal-to-noise ratio. Baseline PINP correlated positively and significantly with BMD response at 24 months. Conclusions: This study suggests that the long-term responsiveness of bone formation markers to teriparatide is not affected in subjects previously treated with antiresorptive drugs. It is the purpose of this feasibility study to determine the intersegmental motions and loading conditions of the cervical spine in vivo with standard clinical investigation methods. METHODS: We propose a new approach which merges full flexion-extension X-ray images, and continuous motion of the whole cervical spine obtained with a tracking motion system. These data were used as input for a subject-specific rigid body model of the cervical spine computed with the software MSC.Adams. This model simulates the cervical spine extension/flexion, the intervertebral motions are deduced using an inverse kinematics procedure. FINDINGS: Subject-specific rigid body models were computed from data of two subjects. The intersegmental motion and loading conditions were calculated. We found that the loading amplitudes depended on the intervertebral level, and that subject specific patterns were highlighted. We noticed an unsymmetrical behavior in flexion and extension. Furthermore intervertebral rotations were correlated with the global motion of the cervical spine. The effects of teriparatide versus alendronate were compared by gender and menopausal status in patients with glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. At 18 months, increases in lumbar spine BMD were significantly greater in the teriparatide versus alendronate group in postmenopausal women (7.8% versus 3.7%, p < 0.001), premenopausal women (7.0% versus 0.7%, p < 0.001), and men (7.3% versus 3.7%, p = 0.03). In patients with glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIO), teriparatide significantly increased bone mineral density (BMD) and decreased vertebral fractures compared with alendronate. We examined effects of teriparatide versus alendronate by gender and menopausal status. This was a multicenter, randomized, double-blind study of teriparatide 20 µg/day versus alendronate 10 mg/day in patients with GIO (277 postmenopausal women, 67 premenopausal women, 83 men). Primary outcome was change in lumbar spine BMD. Secondary outcomes included change in hip BMD, change in bone biomarkers, fracture incidence, and safety. At 18 months, mean percent increases from baseline in lumbar spine BMD were significantly greater in the teriparatide versus alendronate group in postmenopausal women (7.8% versus 3.7%, p < 0.001), premenopausal women (7.0% versus 0.7%, p < 0.001), and men (7.3% versus 3.7%, p = 0.03). Radiographic vertebral fractures occurred in one teriparatide (one postmenopausal) and ten alendronate patients (six postmenopausal, four men), and nonvertebral fractures occurred in 12 teriparatide (nine postmenopausal, two premenopausal, one man) and eight alendronate patients (six postmenopausal, two men). The proportion of patients reporting adverse events in teriparatide versus alendronate groups was consistent across subgroups. Data from French cruises in 1999–2007, a period during which Deep Blue (DB) or T7 expendable bathythermographs (XBTs) were deployed, and for which ancillary temperature data are available in the northeast Atlantic and equatorial Atlantic regions, are examined. There was a total of 16 cruises with XBTs launched between conductivity–temperature–depth (CTD) stations; during most of these, as well as during three additional cruises that were also considered, intake temperature was measured. XBT data from two voluntary observing ships in the North Atlantic subpolar gyre for which intake temperature was measured were also investigated. There is an XBT cold bias due to stirring of a stratified upper layer by the ship, resulting in differences between XBT temperatures at 3–5 m and intake measurements. This is most pronounced for midlatitude spring or summer cruises, when it averages about 0.10°C. When these situations are removed, the comparisons clearly indicate positive biases in XBT temperature measurements in 1999–2006, with individual cruise averages generally between 0° and 0.1°C, and a tendency to have larger biases when surface temperature is high. In addition, a positive depth-estimate bias of the XBTs in the upper thermocline (on the order of 4 m) is identified, as well as a depth overestimation through the profile, averaging 1.7% (1.2%) for the equatorial (midlatitude) cruises (with respect to a previously published depth estimate). Abstract: A theoretical study of a Fabry–Perot cavity in presence of radiation pressure and photo-thermal effects is reported. We show that the competition between these nonlinearities leads to bistability or self-sustained oscillations also in absence of time-delays effects in the intracavity field buildup. In both regimes the stability domains are derived analytically. Abstract: It is widely accepted that hip and spine fractures are associated with substantial morbidity, but there is growing awareness that other fractures are under-recognized. The incidence of nonspinal, nonhip fractures is higher than for hip fractures because they occur at an earlier age. Furthermore, the incidence of nonspinal, nonhip fractures exceeds that of hip fractures in men and women >80 years old. Nonspinal, nonhip fractures are associated with considerable morbidity. On average, women with humeral, ankle, distal forearm, and foot fractures experience substantial numbers of limited activity days, and nonspinal, nonhip fractures account for almost a third of health care expenditures attributable to osteoporotic fractures. Nonspinal, nonhip fractures are associated with low bone mineral density, thus it may be possible to identify those at risk. Because these fractures also are indicative of increased risk at other sites, those susceptible might benefit from assessments including these other fracture types. It is the clinician’s responsibility to attend to and recognize that nonspinal, nonhip fractures are usually associated with osteoporosis and should be treated. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The article presents a study on the effects of hurricane damage on large-bodied fishes' use of red mangrove Rhizophora mangle Linnaeus shoreline in Charlotte Harbor in Florida. The study found no significant relationship between proportion of the damaged shoreline and fish assemblage structure. The effects of habitat damage on fish assemblages may yet be evidenced due to extended deterioration of prop-root structure and slow recolonization of red mangroves.

Abstract: The high level reached in the stability of laser sources and in the quality of optical components makes interferometric metrology appealing to those involved in the search for detection of gravitational waves (GWs). In this paper we present a readout for massive detectors of GWs, based on laser interferometry with high finesse Fabry–Pérot cavities, and describe the frequency stability of the laser source. The achievable sensitivity at the quantum limit level inherent to this technique requires a careful design, in order to reduce other sources of extra noise. In particular, we focus on the local effects of thermal and radiation pressure fluctuations and present an optical configuration that can reduce these effects below the quantum limit level. Abstract: Background: Most in vivo knee kinematic analyses are based on external markers attached to the shank and the thigh. Literature data show that markers positioning and soft tissues artifacts affect the kinematic parameters of the bones true movement. Most of the techniques of quantification used were invasive. The aim of the present study was to develop and apply a non-invasive methodology to compute the relative movement between the bones and the markers. Methods: Magnetic resonance imaging acquisitions were performed on the right knee of eleven volunteers without knee injury. The subjects were equipped with external magnetic resonance imaging-compatible marker sets. A foot drive device allowed the subjects to perform an actively loaded knee extension. The whole volume of the subject’s knee was processed for four sequentially held knee flexion positions during the knee movement. The bones and external marker sets geometry were reconstructed from magnetic resonance imaging images. Then a registration algorithm was applied to the bones and the relative movement of the thigh and shank marker sets with respect to their underlying bones was computed. Findings: The protocol resulted in a good geometrical accuracy and reproducibility. Marker sets movement differ from that of the bones with a maximum of 22mm in translation and 15° in rotation and it affects the knee kinematics. Interpretation: Marker sets relative movement modify the knee movement finite helical axes direction (range 10–35°) and localization (range 0–40mm). A strong characteristic of American popular culture in the 1920s and 1930s was its fascination with all things 'oriental." or generally exotic. It was expressed in a multitude of areas, including furniture, fashion, movies and architecture. It was also evident in quiltmaking, an extremely popular pastime of the era, in the preponderance of patchwork patterns that had an exotic theme or name. Sometimes the designs of these patterns directly reflected their exotic names; most often they did not. The reasons for the popularity of exotic pattern names are varied. Certainly, pattern designers were capitalizing on the fashion for anything oriental. But, as this paper will propose, ladies' magazine publishers and quilt column writers also were reacting to Americans' ambivalence about Asians—their fear of the "yellow peril" mixed with their admiration for Eastern design. By naming and renaming patterns and. more importantly, by mixing oriental, "colonial," and modern imagery and verbiage, they diluted the negative connotations of the exotic and potentially made it more palatable to the tradition-centered quiltmaking world. The finite helical-axes method can be used to describe the three-dimensional in vitro kinematics of the spine. However, this method still suffers from large stochastic calculation errors and poorly conceived visualisation techniques. The aim of the present study, therefore, was to improve the currently used finite helical axes description, by use of a less error-prone calculation algorithm and a new visualisation technique, and to apply this improved method to the study of the three-dimensional in vitro kinematics of the spine. Three-dimensional, continuous motion data of spinal motion segments were used to calculate the position and orientation of the finite helical axes (FHAs). The axes were then projected on plane antero-posterior, lateral and axial radiographs in order to depict the relation to the anatomy of each individual specimen. A hinge joint was used to estimate the measurement error of data collection and axes calculation. In an exemplary in vitro experiment, this method was used to demonstrate the ability of a prosthetic disc nucleus to restore the three-dimensional motion pattern of lumbar motion segments. In the validation experiment with the hinge joint, the calculated FHAs were lying within ±2.5 mm of the actual joint axis and were inclined relative to this axis at up to ±1.5°. In the exemplary in vitro experiment, the position and orientation of the FHAs of the intact specimens were subject to large inter-individual differences in all loading directions. Nucleotomy of the lumbar segments caused the axes to spread out, indicating complex coupled motions. The implantation of the prosthetic disc nucleus, for the most part, more than reversed this effect: the axes became oriented almost parallel to each other. The experiments showed that the present improved description of finite helical axes is a valid and useful tool to characterise the three-dimensional in vitro kinematics of the intact, injured and stabilised spine. Bone fragility fractures constitute the principal complication of osteoporosis. The identification of individuals at high risk of sustaining osteoporotic fractures is important for implementing preventive measures. The purpose of this study is to analyze the discriminative capacity of a series of osteoporosis and fracture risk factors, and of calcaneal quantitative ultrasound (QUS), in a population of postmenopausal women with a history of osteoporotic fracture. A cross-sectional analysis was made of a cohort of 5195 women aged 65 or older (mean +/- SD: 72.3 +/- 5.4 years) seen in 58 primary care centers in Spain. A total of 1042 women (20.1%) presented with a history of osteoporotic fracture. Most fractures (93%) were non-vertebral. Age-adjusted odds ratios corresponding to each decrease in one standard deviation of the different QUS parameters ranged from 1.47 to 1.55 (P < 0.001) for fractures. The age-adjusted multivariate analysis yielded the following risk factors independently associated with a history of osteoporotic fracture: number of fertile years, a family history of fracture, falls in the previous year, a history of chronic obstructive airway disease, the use of antiarrhythmic drugs, and a low value for any of the QUS parameters. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of the best model was 0.656. In summary, a series of easily assessable osteoporotic fracture risk factors has been identified. QUS was shown to discriminate between women with and without a history of fracture, and constitutes a useful tool for assessing fracture risk. Various of the vertebral and hip fracture risk factors frequently cited in North American and British populations showed no discriminative capacity in our series--thus suggesting that such factors may not be fully applicable to our population and/or to the predominant type of fractures included in the present study. Objective. To quantify the dynamic effects of anterior cruciate ligament deficiency on human knee joint motion.Design. Three-dimensional motion was assessed by measuring the kinematics of intact and anterior cruciate ligament deficient knee joint specimens during simulated flexion–extension cycles.Background. It is known that the anterior cruciate ligament plays an important role in controlling three-dimensional knee joint motion. Nevertheless, dynamic effects of deficiency are not fully understood.Methods. Six cadaveric knees were tested in a knee joint motion and loading apparatus prior to and after anterior cruciate ligament resection. To determine if the kinematic results depended on additional loading, internal and external rotation moments of 3.4 N m were axially applied to the tibia. The kinematics were analysed in terms of finite helical axes.Results. Sectioning the anterior cruciate ligament had little effect on the orientations of the finite helical axes. However, applying moments did affect the axes orientation. In contrast, relative translations of the axes were significantly affected by the deficiency for all rotational moments applied. Referring to the individual knee anatomy the largest translation of 12.5 mm (median) occurred in medial/lateral direction.Conclusions. Anterior cruciate ligament rupture primarily causes a translation of the finite helical axes in medial/lateral direction. Consequently, increased anterior excursion of the tibia occurs (subluxation) and therefore dynamic instability.RelevanceThis study provides a new perception of kinematic alterations after anterior cruciate ligament rupture. The Cardanic or Eulerian description is the most commonly used method for the description of in vivo knee rotation. It is based on the determination of external anatomical landmarks used for the decomposition of the position of the tibia relative to the femur by three rotations about three pre-defined axes. However, the in vivo localisation of external anatomical landmarks is known to be difficult and subjective. Even a small mislocalisation may lead to dramatic consequences: the Cardanic description may become irreproducible and angle values may be overestimated. This error is well documented in the literature and known as the “cross-talk effect”. Therefore this study proposes an additional calibration step of the classic Cardanic description by a reorientation procedure of rotation axes. The procedure is based on biomechanical constraints of knee kinematics as they appear during a knee squat exercise using the finite helical axis (FHA) method and is independent of anatomical landmark. The method was validated with the help of a special set-up modelling a perfect knee. Furthermore, an inter-session reliability study was performed involving tests on two healthy subjects during knee squat exercises. We found that the reorientation procedure was more reproducible than the classic Cardanic description. We observed a maximum inter-session difference of 37.1° for the adduction angle obtained with the classic Cardanic description. The sensitivity of standard optical schemes for the readout of weak vibrations is limited thermal and radiation pressure fluctuations induced by the small interrogation area. The hyperfine structure of theHe 1 s 3 p P state and theHe-He isotope shift is determined by high precision measurements of the 1 s2 s S-1 s 3 p p P transition frequencies near 389 nm. A direct frequency measurement is made without the need for wavelength calibration by tuning a single laser to the atomic frequency, and using a novel heterodyne method to observe beat frequencies with a stable reference laser. A fit to a theoretical model of hyperfine structure is used to determine the hyperfine shifts. Additional off-diagonal mixing effects are investigated to resolve a possible systematic discrepancy in the hyperfine intervals. The final isotope shift without hyperfine structure of 42184308±165 kHz is used to deduce an rms nuclear charge radius forHe of 1.956±0.042 fm. This is in good agreement with other values obtained from atomic isotope shift measurements, and a recent theoretical value of 1.958±0.006 fm. The present result helps to resolve substantial differences in theHe nuclear radius derived from electron-nuclear scattering measurements, and it provides a significant test of the nuclear three-body problem. Using high-resolution saturation spectroscopy, by means of both double heterostructure and multiple quantum-well AlGaAs diode lasers, we investigate the isotope shifts and the hyperfine structure in the 3 s-3 p transitions of the triplet and quintet systems of atomic oxygen. From the analysis of the signals fromO we can deduce precise values for the hyperfine structure magnetic dipole constants. A theoretical analysis allows us to bring into evidence core polarization effects in the hyperfine structure. By heterodyning two frequency locked lasers, we perform a direct frequency measurement of the isotope effect on the S→ P transitions. From the comparison with similar accuracy data on the corresponding quintet transitions, an upper bound to the size of the nuclear volume effect is given, and precise values for the specific mass contributions are consequently obtained. X-ray polarimetric missions planned for this decade will significantly enhance our knowledge of compact accreting sources. Observations of the X-ray polarization signal from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) or X-ray binary systems (XRBs) will bring new means to study inner accretion flow in these objects that, together with currently used spectroscopic and timing techniques, will help us to determine better their properties, such as their inclination, orientation, shape, and size of their corona as well as the black hole spin. In this work, we present a yet missing piece in the global polarization models of black hole accretion discs. We compute the reflected X-ray emission from the disc in a local co-moving frame using (1) the radiative transfer code titan to obtain the ionization structure of the disc and (2) the Monte Carlo code stokes that incorporates the physics of absorption, re-emission, and Compton scattering to produce a complete spectropolarimetric output. We present the final Stokes parameters I ,  Q , and U for a set of photon-indices of the incident primary power-law radiation, the disc ionization parameters, incident and emission angles, for three independent polarization states of the incident coronal X-ray photons with a sufficient resolution in energy to allow for sharp discussion of spectral and polarization properties. We show that the spectral component matches well literature predictions. The polarization degree and angle are in agreement with analytical approximations previously appearing in reflection models and we demonstrate that the polarized reflected X-ray emission can be, locally, quite large in the |$2{\!-\!}12\,$|  keV band.
