This article describes the process whereby digitization of a journal is used to preserve and provide access to the contents on the World Wide Web. The journal chosen, The Canadian Architect and Builder, was the only professional architectural journal published in Canada before World War I. The original printed version is in an extremely fragile state and the digital version will provide accessible, electronic access to the contents. Funded in part by the federal government’s Youth Employment Strategy, the Department of Canadian Heritage and the Canadian Library Association, the project’s objectives and goals are described and the steps taken towards those goals are presented.

Les bibliothèques d’art au Québec ont une riche histoire qui commence avec la première collection de livres d’architecture chez les Jésuites, en 1632, et l’ouverture de la première galerie d’art canadienne, en 1833. Groupées en trois catégories, les bibliothèques d’art se retrouvent dans les musées, les universités et les centres de documentation. Cet article retrace la genèse de ces importantes bibliothèques et montre comment leurs bibliothécaires sont devenus des professionnels spécialisés partageant leurs ressources en intégrant les nouvelles technologies et en respectant l’intégrité des différentes collections. On y discute aussi des enjeux futurs liés à la profession et à l’adaptation aux changements technologiques., Art libraries in Quebec have a very rich history dating back to 1632 with the first collection of architecture books by the Jesuits and with the opening of the first Canadian art gallery in 1833. Grouped into three categories, art libraries are found in museums, university libraries and in documentation centers. This article traces the history of the major art libraries in Quebec and shows how art librarians have evolved into specialized professionals, sharing their resources, adapting to new technology, while respecting the integrity of their various collections in their institutions. The challenges facing the profession and how to adapt to the rapid changes brought about by new technologies are discussed with a look to the future of art librarianship., Las bibliotecas de arte en Québec poseen una larga historia que comienza con la primera colección de libros de arquitectura de los jesuitas, en 1632, y con la apertura de la primera galería de arte en Canadá, en 1833. Divididas en tres categorías, las bibliotecas de arte se encuentran en museos, universidades y centros de documentación. El presente artículo traza la historia de estas importantes bibliotecas y muestra como sus bibliotecarios se han convertido, en profesionales especializados que se organizan para compartir sus recursos y para integrar las nuevas tecnologías respetando la integridad de las diferentes colecciones. De igual manera, discutiremos sobre los próximos retos que aguardan a nuestra profesión y sobre la adaptación necesaria a la que conducen los cambios tecnológicos.
