Abstract

A first-rate ornithologist, Margaret Morse Nice (1883–1974) pioneered field studies on song sparrows and advocated for women's active role in the sciences. Yet her nontraditional path toward scientific progress, as well as her gender, meant that she had to reach the highest pinnacles of achievement in order to gain prominence in her chosen field. Luckily for Nice, she was more than up to the challenge. In this engaging first book-length biography, Marilyn Bailey Ogilvie sheds light on Nice's intellectual journey. The wife of an academic, Nice pursued her own scholarly interests through self-study and by cultivating and creating work partnerships with colleagues. Talented, ambitious, and creative, she did not define herself solely through her role as wife and mother, nor did her family responsibilities deter her from her professional achievements. From her undergraduate study at Mount Holyoke College to her fieldwork in Norman, Oklahoma, her coauthorship of Birds of Oklahoma and subsequent correspondence with George Sutton to her later years in Columbus, Ohio, Nice's career grew in tandem with her personal life—and in some cases, because of it. Although bridled by social constraints, her work spoke for itself: she produced more than 244 papers, articles, and published letters; seven books and book-length monographs; and 3,000 reviews. This voluminous and field-defining output earned her the respect of some of the most important biological scientists of the day, among them Konrad Lorenz and Ernst Mayr, who declared that she had “almost singlehandedly” initiated “a new era in American ornithology.”For the Birds gives Nice her due recognition, lending compelling insight into her activism promoting conservation and preservation, her field methods, and the role of women in the history of science, particularly in ornithology. Nice's life acts as a looking glass into the various challenges faced by fellow female pioneers, their resolve, and their contributions.

Abstract

First Published in 1999. Alice Middleton Boring was a remarkable woman who lived and worked in remarkable times. This feisty, head-strong scientist spent her life teaching biology in China, during some of the most tumultuous times in the country's history. Alice found herself continually distracted from science by civil war, revolution, the Japanese occupation, World War II (involving her internment and repatriation), and the upheaval which resulted in the creation of a new, socialist society. Nevertheless, throughout the turmoil she continued to publish scientific papers. In spite of her experiences, she remained deeply influenced by her time in China long after her return to the United States. Loyalty to the Chinese and an almost evangelical appreciation of her adopted culture permeated the rest of her personal and professional life.

Methods of ensuring the efficiency and efficacy of such trips are identified, including contacting dealers in advance and the need for a listing of the library's holdings.

ISBN 978-90-481-2473-2.The late Mary Bruck takes a unique approach to her topic. Rather than presenting a strictly biographical account of her approximately 25 subjects, Bruck concentrates on the interrelationships between these women, their society, scientific institutions, contemporary male scientists, other women scientists, and, most interestingly, their familial connections. Links with women astronomers in countries beyond Britain and Ireland, especially the United States, are also woven into the narrative. Bruck does not attempt to interpret her subjects through modern feminist theory. Instead, she skilfully interweaves the lives and contributions of her women astronomers into contemporary events. In spite of Briick's familiarity with both the history of astronomy and astronomy as a discipline, this book is accessible to the general interested reader; when technical details are necessary she presents them clearly.Women, as Bruck demonstrates, were important in all areas of nineteenth-century astronomy, including navigation, popularization, spectroscopy, education and observational astronomy. Many of Briick's women astronomers are little known. Her seventeen short chapters treat Margaret Flamsteed, Anne Emlyn, Margaret Bryan, Maria Short, Caroline Herschel, Mary Edwards, Mary Anne (nee Hervey) Fallows, Janet Taylor, Maria Edgeworth, Janet Marcet, Mary Somerville, Mary (Countess of Rosse), Mary Ward, Jane and Caroline Lassell, Elizabeth Juliana Sabine, Annarella (nee Arrington) Smyth, Maria Mitchell (American), Thereza Mary Llewelyn (later Story-Maskelyne), Jessie (nee Duncan) Smyth, Isobel (nee Black) Gill, Elizabeth Brown, Margaret Huggins, Agnes Clerke, Alice Everett, Ann (nee Russell) Maunder, Ethel Bellamy, Mary Evershed (nee Acworth Orr) Evershed, and Mary Adella Blagg.These women vary from the well-educated Margaret Flamsteed to the reluctant astronomer, Caroline Herschel, who had little formal education and none in science or mathematics. Both were indispensable to the success of their male relatives, in Margaret's case to her husband the Astronomer Royal, John Flamsteed, and Caroline to her famous brother, William. But as is seen in all of her examples, the relationship is symbiotic, for the women would not have been able to prosper intellectually without the help of their male mentors. Abstract

This paper explores the careers of several British women astronomers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. I postulate that the only category of scientific practice open to most of these women was that of an ‘amateur’. They would have become professionals had they had the opportunity but since they were barred from professional status they used their talents to promote the importance of amateur science. I propose the term ‘obligatory amateur’ for these women who, unlike men, were unable to choose amateur or professional status. I explore this concept of a ‘gendered’ amateurism through the life and works of Annie Maunder, with references to British women astronomers contemporary with her.

Abstract

Nettie Stevens has been recognised recently for her careful research postulating that the chromosomes are involved in the inheritance of a specific character, sex. The background of her achievement is discussed, including the behaviour of the chromosomes in cell division, the results of experimental breeding, and the possibility that the two are related. Through exploring her early life and education, her relationship to her colleagues who, while praising her work, did not give her the credit she deserved, and the professional difficulties that she as a woman encountered, Stevens’ importance in the history of genetics is considered. Key Concepts: Nettie M. Stevens is most noted for postulating that sex is determined by a specific chromosome. Stevens shares credit for this discovery with Edmund B. Wilson. Wilson is more often credited for this discovery both because he made more contributions to the history of biology and because Stevens was a woman. Abstract

When in December 1911 Marie Curie stood on the platform in Stockholm, Sweden, to accept the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for isolating radium, she made history for the second time. In December 1903 she had become the first woman to be selected a Nobel Laureate. She shared the 1903 prize in physics with two physicists, her husband Pierre and Henri Becquerel. As a woman Nobel laureate, Marie Curie was an oddity in 1903 and 1911 as she still would be today. Women Nobel Prize winners in the sciences (physics, chemistry, and physiology/medicine) are still very scarce.

Helen Dean King's scientific work focused on inbreeding using experimental data collected from standardized laboratory rats to elucidate problems in human heredity. The meticulous care with which she carried on her inbreeding experiments assured that her results were dependable and her theoretical explanations credible. By using her nearly homozygous rats as desired commodities, she also was granted access to venues and people otherwise unavailable to her as a woman. King's scientific career was made possible through her life experiences. She earned a doctorate from Bryn Mawr College under Thomas Hunt Morgan and spent a productive career at the Wistar Institute of Anatomy and Biology in Philadelphia where she had access to the experimental subjects which made her career possible. In this paper I examine King's work on inbreeding, her participation in the debates over eugenics, her position at the Wistar Institute, her status as a woman working with mostly male scientists, and her involvement with popular science.

Abstract

Summary The nature of the contributions to astronomy of Caroline Lucretia Herschel (1750–1848) are explored in this article. Her accomplishments included new observational discoveries and the skilled and accurate transcription and reduction of astronomical data. Although she made important additions to the sum total of astronomical facts available to the scientist, she herself showed little interest or ability in applying these data to explain phenomena. Love of her brother, Sir William Herschel, motivated her achievements in astronomy. Barred from the ranks of creative astronomers by both her inability and her disinterest in abstract concepts, she substituted other qualities such as accuracy and perseverance which assured her a place in the history of astronomy.

Abstract

The role of Robert Chambers's anonymous Vestiges of the natural history of creation in popularizing evolutionary ideas establishes it as a significant work in the history of science even though its intrinsic scientific value is not great. Its fascinating subject, a universally applicable developmental hypothesis, piqued the curiosity of the nineteenth-century reading public. The clientele to whom the book especially appealed was not too concerned with errors in fact and unsupported generalizations, but instead was attracted by the smoothness of its literary style and the glibness of its pronouncements. These same characteristics caused it to be an anathema to both scientists and clergymen, who joined together to voice their disapproval; they agreed that the ideas in it were potentially harmful to those untrained in scientific procedures and unaware of the book's inherent religious heresies.
