It is expected that utilization of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)-based nanostructured electrocatalysts might replace the Pt-group electrodes most effectively applied for hydrogen evolution reaction from water. Therefore, in the past two decades, various approaches have been reported for fabrication of nanostructured MoS2-based catalysts, but their applications in practice are still missing due to lower activity and stability. We envisaged that the knowledge about the peculiarities of MoS2 nanoplatelets attachment to various conductive substrates by hydrothermal processing could be helpful for fabrication of more active and stable working electrodes. Therefore, in this study, the hydrothermal syntheses at the Mo, Ti, Al, anodized Ti, and hydrothermally designed titanium suboxide substrates were performed; the electrodes obtained were characterized; and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity was tested. In this way, MoS2-based HER catalyst possessing a surprising stability and a low Tafel slope was designed via attachment of nanoplatelet-shaped MoS2 species to the nanotube-shaped anatase-TiO2 surface.

Background and objective: Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) emerge as a promising tool for early cancer diagnostics and targeted therapy. However, both toxicity and biological activity of SPIONs should be evaluated in detail. The aim of this study was to synthesize superparamagnetic cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (Co-SPIONs), and to investigate their uptake, toxicity and effects on cancer stem-like properties in human pancreatic cancer cell line MiaPaCa2 and human ovarian cancer cell line A2780. Materials and methods: Co-SPIONs were produced by Massart's co-precipitation method. The cells were treated with Co-SPIONs at three different concentrations (0.095, 0.48, and 0.95 μg/mL) for 24 and 48 h. Cell viability and proliferation were analyzed after treatment. The stem-like properties of cells were assessed by investigating the cell clonogenicity and expression of cancer stem cell-associated markers, including CD24/ESA in A2780 cell line and CD44/ALDH1 in MiaPaCa2 cell line. Magnetically activated cell sorting was used for the separation of magnetically labeled and unlabeled cells. Results: Both cancer cell lines accumulated Co-SPIONs, however differences in response to nanoparticles were observed between MiaPaCa2 and A2780 cell. In particular, A2780 cells were more sensitive to exposition to Co-SPIONs than MiaPaCa2 cells, indicating that a safe concentration of nanoparticles must be estimated individually for a particular cell type. Higher doses of Co-SPIONs decreased both the clonogenicity and ESA marker expression in A2780 cells. Conclusions: Co-SPIONs are not cytotoxic to cancer cells, at least when used at a concentration of up to 0.95 μg/mL. Co-SPIONs have a dose-dependent effect on the clonogenic potential and ESA marker expression in A2780 cells. Magnetic detection of low concentrations of Co-SPIONS in cancer cells is a promising tool for further applications of these nanoparticles in cancer diagnosis and treatment; however, extensive research in this field is needed.

We report the synthesis of μm and sub-μm-sized Co, Ru, and Co-Ru alloy species by hydrothermal approach in the aqueous alkaline solutions (pH ≥ 13) containing CoCl2 and/or RuCl3, sodium citrate, and hydrazine hydrate and a study of their catalytic properties for hydrogen generation by hydrolysis of sodium borohydride solution. This way provides a simple platform for fabrication of the ball-shaped Co-Ru alloy catalysts containing up to 12 wt% Ru. Note that bimetallic Co-Ru alloy bowls containing even 7 at.% Ru have demonstrated catalytic properties that are comparable with the ones of pure Ru particles fabricated by the same method. This result is of great importance in view of the preparation of cost-efficient catalysts for hydrogen generation from borohydrides. The morphology and composition of fabricated catalyst particles have been characterized using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray diffraction, and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry.

We report the design and methodology for functionalization of the surface of small Co-ferrite nanoparticles with a mean size of up to 5.0 nm through the attachment of vitamin C molecules initiating [AuCl4]- reduction and the subsequent deposition of gold. By this method, Co-ferrite-Au nanoparticles have been fabricated for the first time in a simple and controllable manner, consisting of the determination of the consumed ascorbic acid content. The sequential addition of vitamin C and HAuCl4 to the ferrofluid at low concentrations leads to the formation of a gold shell on the ferrite core. This approach avoids the additional stabilization of ferrite nanoparticles before gold deposition, and is of great importance in view of the preparation of biodegradable superparamagnetic particles for nanomedicine applications. The deposition of gold onto the ferrite surface was proved herein by UV-vis absorption and energy- dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis, atomic force microscopy (AFM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and Mössbauer spectroscopy.
