In the past few years, there has been a leap from traditional palmprint recognition methodologies, which use handcrafted features, to deep-learning approaches that are able to automatically learn feature representations from the input data. However, the information that is extracted from such deep-learning models typically corresponds to the global image appearance, where only the most discriminative cues from the input image are considered. This characteristic is especially problematic when data is acquired in unconstrained settings, as in the case of contactless palmprint recognition systems, where visual artifacts caused by elastic deformations of the palmar surface are typically present in spatially local parts of the captured images. In this study we address the problem of elastic deformations by introducing a new approach to contactless palmprint recognition based on a novel CNN model, designed as a two-path architecture, where one path processes the input in a holistic manner, while the second path extracts local information from smaller image patches sampled from the input image. As elastic deformations can be assumed to most significantly affect the global appearance, while having a lesser impact on spatially local image areas, the local processing path addresses the issues related to elastic deformations thereby supplementing the information from the global processing path. The model is trained with a learning objective that combines the Additive Angular Margin (ArcFace) Loss and the well-known center loss. By using the proposed model design, the discriminative power of the learned image representation is significantly enhanced compared to standard holistic models, which, as we show in the experimental section, leads to state-of-the-art performance for contactless palmprint recognition. Our approach is tested on two publicly available contactless palmprint datasets—namely, IITD and CASIA—and is demonstrated to perform favorably against state-of-the-art methods from the literature. The source code for the proposed model is made publicly available.

Anomaly detection in complex data structures is one of the most challenging problems in computer vision. In many real-world problems, for example in the quality control in modern manufacturing, the anomalous samples are usually rare, resulting in (highly) imbalanced datasets. However, in current research practice, these scenarios are rarely modeled, and as a consequence, evaluation of anomaly detection algorithms often do not reproduce results that are useful for practical applications. First, even in case of highly unbalanced input data, anomaly detection algorithms are expected to significantly reduce the proportion of anomalous samples, detecting “almost all” anomalous samples (with exact specifications depending on the target customer). This places high importance on only the small part of the ROC curve, possibly rendering the standard metrics such as AUC (Area Under Curve) and AP (Average Precision) useless. Second, the target of automatic anomaly detection in practical applications is significant reduction in manual work required, and standard metrics are poor predictor of this feature. Finally, the evaluation may produce erratic results for different randomly initialized training runs of the neural network, producing evaluation results that may not reproduce well in practice. In this paper, we present an evaluation methodology that avoids these pitfalls.

Aim:To determine whether there is an immunogenic connection and antigen difference between the HLA antigens in the erosive (EOLP) and reticular (ROLP) oral lichen planus. Materials and Method: 73 patients with ROLP and EOLP have been tested. Typing of the HLA antigens has been made for locus A and B. The typing of the HLA was conducted with the use of microlymphocyto toxic test by Terasaki. The reading of the findings has been conducted with an inverse microscope. When a reaction has 4 points it is considered to be positive. Results: The most frequently typified antigens in ROLP from locus A are HLA А2 (57.57%) and А3 (33.33)%, and for locus B 21.21%. In EOLP it is А9 (8888%). In locus B a connection has been found with HLA B8 (77.77%). The statistical analysis with the ×2 test has shown that the carriers of HLA A9 display a relative risk (RR) of 3.65 and ×2=20.72. Consequently, there is high static importance for locus A p Conclusions: In ROLP A3 antigen and in EOLP A9 and A8 may be considered as carriers with proneness to OLP.

Introduction Chronic periodontitis is as an inflammatory disease of the supporting tissue of the teeth caused by periopatogens microorganisams. New concept about etiology of periodontal disease suggests that herpes viruses may play an important role in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease. The aim of this study was to analyze the presence of herpes simplex virus type 1and 2 (HSV-1, HSV-2) cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), in supra-gingival dental plaque .Materials and Methods The study comprised a total of 89 patients who were divided in two groups: patients who were diagnosed moderate stage of periodontal disease and patients who were diagnosed with advanced stage of periodontal disease. Clinical examinations included determination of plaque index, gingival index, sulcus bleeding index, probing depth, and clinical attachment level. Supra-gingival dental plaque samples were taken with sterile coton ball scrub on tooth enamel. Molecular detection of HSV1, HSV2 , EBV and CMV was analyzed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR).Results Molecular analysis of HSV-1 ,HSV-2, EBV and CMV in supra-gingival dental plaque in patients with chronic periodontal disease (a total of 89) showed the presence of EBV in 12,40% of patients , HSV-1 was found in 11,20% of patients, in 7,90% of patients was detected HSV-2, CMV was established in 9,00% of patients. In 3,40% patients in supra-gingival dental plaque was detected combination of viruses HSV1 and CMV, in 3,40% of patient combination of HSV1 and EBV ; and in 2,20% of patient combination ofHSV2,EBV was observed; in 2,20% of patients was found combination of 3 viruses HSV1; HSV2; EBV and in 49,50% patients we found negative finding. Patients with moderate stage of periodontal disease have a 0,78 times(OR = 0,78 / 0,33-1,84/)no significantly lower risk of probability of finding viruses in the supra-gingival plaque compared to patients who had advanced stage of periodontal disease. In the shown cross-culture of the presence of viruses in supra-gingival plaque in patients with moderate and advanced stage of periodontal disease for Fisher, s Exact Test = 5,19 and p >0.05 (p = 0.809 / Monte Carlo sig. (0.799-0.819)there is no significant difference.Conclusion We can associate the presence of herpes simplex viruses in supra-gingival dental plaque with periodontal disease. Our findings suggest that there is no significant difference in presence of viruses in supra-gingival plaque in patients with moderate and sereve stage of periodontal disease.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease is an inflammatory-destructive condition of the supporting tissues of the teeth. Microorganisms found in the dental plaque were considered to be the primary local etiologic factor responsible for the periodontal destruction. It is also evident that herpes simplex viruses may have an impact in the etiopathogenesis of periodontal disease. AIM: This study has been made with the aim to analyse the prevalence of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) in the dental plaque (supra- and subgingival) of patients with the chronic periodontal disease. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study comprised a total of 89 patients with chronic periodontal disease divided into two groups (patients with moderate and severe periodontitis). Supragingival dental plaque samples were taken with sterile cotton (supragingival), and subgingival dental plaque samples were taken with paper absorbents. Samples were subjected to extraction of DNA and further analysis with multiplex PCR for the presence of herpes viral DNA. RESULTS: HSV-1 virus was detected In 24.7% of all patients included in the study. HSV-1 was detected in 22.2% of patients with the moderate stage of the disease, of which in all (100%) in the supragingival plaque samples and only 16.7% in subgingival plaque samples. In two patients HSV-1 was concomitantly detected in supra and subgingival plaque samples. In patients with advanced stage of the disease, the HSV-1 virus was detected in 28.6% patients. In two of the patients, HSV-1 was concomitantly detected in supra and subgingival plaque samples. Statistically, a significant difference was found in HSV-1 positive patients with a moderate stage of disease, between the presence of the virus in subgingival (100%) and subgingival (16.7%) dental plaque samples, p < 0.05. CONCLUSION: Herpes simplex viruses type 1 are present in supragingival and subgingival dental plaque.

This study investigated the pragmatic knowledge and competence of the Macedonian learners of English, i.e. Macedonian high school English students’ views on and perceptions of pragmatics, their pragmatic competence in the speech act of complimenting, and the language learning strategies employed in the process of acquiring pragmatic knowledge.Although “student-oriented” and “evaluation-oriented”, the teaching methods currently used do not sufficiently develop students’ communicative competence in the process of English teaching and learning. Many students lack pragmatic knowledge of how to use the foreign language in specific settings and how to interpret certain utterances used by native speakers of the other language.Despite all the efforts made to improve the English language education in Macedonia, yet greater emphasis should be put on students’ linguistic and pragmatic competence in the English teaching and learning process. This area is the focus of the current study that analyses the English speech act of complimenting and its use by the Macedonian learners of English.
