Abstract

Thickness dependence and strain effects in films of $La_{1-x}A_xMnO_3$ perovskites are analyzed in the colossal magnetoresistance regime. The calculations are based on a generalization of a variational approach previously proposed for the study of manganite bulk. It is found that a reduction in the thickness of the film causes a decrease of critical temperature and magnetization, and an increase of resistivity at low temperatures. The strain is introduced through the modifications of in-plane and out-of-plane electron hopping amplitudes due to substrate-induced distortions of the film unit cell. The strain effects on the transition temperature and transport properties are in good agreement with experimental data only if the dependence of the hopping matrix elements on the $Mn-O-Mn$ bond angle is properly taken into account. Finally variations of the electron-phonon coupling linked to the presence of strain turn out important in influencing the balance of coexisting phases in the film, Comment: 7 figures. Abstract

A nonlinear analysis technique called recurrence quantification analysis was used to develop an even more refined version of a cardiac age estimator derived from a previous experiment using Fourier analysis. The findings generally suggest that heart rate regulation is intrinsically stochastic. This is a view supported by an increasing body of evidence on the role of stochastic resonance effects in physiological systems. The existing view of a basically deterministic system with superimposed noise is essentially incorrect.

Abstract

A study was conducted on the cardiac age estimation by means of heart rate variability. Spectral analysis by fast Fourier transform methods was used. The results suggest that cardiac and chronological ages do not match for ages higher than 50 years, which could indicate the presence of subtle biases in the data analysis or a real discrepancy. The results may be useful in estimating cardiac age for screening purposes.

Abstract

Skeletal remodelling is a continuous process during life and is still active also in extreme senescence. In the elderly, bone resorption often prevails over bone formation, causing bone loss and fragility. Elderly subjects are exposed to the risk of fractures, and loss of self-sufficiency, if considering that the proximal femur is the most frequently involved site. Bone remodelling can maintain circulating calcium within physiological ranges, at the expense of a substantial loss of this ion from the skeleton, particularly during senescence. Calcium metabolism is regulated at cellular/molecular level by a network of cytokines, growth factors, systemic hormones that act on bone in paracrine/autocrine/systemic fashion. Among the molecules involved in bone metabolism, parathyroid hormone (PTH) and vitamin D present some peculiar aspects during senescence. The osteometabolic features in a consistent group of centenarians have been evaluated. It results that a severe hypovitaminosis D was present in 99 out of 104 centenarians (25-OH vitamin D below 5 nmol/L), and that it plays an important role as a factor inducing a vicious circle involving hypocalcemia, secondary hyperparathyroidism, together with biochemical features indicating a consistent bone loss. Serum C-terminal cross-linking telopeptide, a specific marker of bone resorption was elevated in 92% of these subjects. Moreover, it has been found that several femoral fractures had occurred after 90 years of age. These data offer a rational for the possible prevention of elevated bone turnover, bone loss and consequently the reduction of osteoporotic fractures and fractures-induced disability, in the oldest olds, through the simple supplementation with calcium and vitamin D.

Abstract

The Italian multicentric study on centenarians (IMSC) was aimed at assessing the level of preservation of the sense of taste, and at estimating to what extent the recognition of various gustative stimuli can give satisfaction and information regarding the surrounding environment for the centenarians. Taste sensitivity has been qualitatively established in a group of 126 Italian centenarians (mean age 101.9+/-1.4 years) and compared to that of a group of 100 elderly subjects (mean age 70.5+/-5.0 years). All the individuals included in the study groups had a mini mental state examination (MMSE) score larger than 19. The results revealed that taste sensitivity is significantly reduced in the centenarians; as a matter of fact, the elderly control subjects are able to perceive taste stimuli in 84.25+/-3.40% of the testing, while the centenarians were successful only in 74.23+/-6.19% of the experiments (P

Abstract

Evaluating the prevalence and the degree of steatosis in geriatric patients (65 to 85 years of age) with Metabolic Syndrome (defined by ATP III criteria); searching for metabolic factors which are predictive for the degree of steatosis; evaluating the efficacy of Ursodeoxycholic Acid (UDCA) for 6 months in the treatment of patients with NAFLD or NASH.We studied 87 geriatric patients with Metabolic Syndrome. Steatosis was diagnosed and graded by laboratory assessment and ultrasonography, method based on the determination of liver/kidney ratio through grey-scale intensity, which was calculated as an index of the severity of the steatosis: it could oscilates from 0 (none) to 3 (severe). We randomized the geriatric patients into two groups: Ursodeoxycholic Acid (UDCA)-treated group (n=43 pz) and diet-treated group (1200 Kcal/die for female, 1500 Kcal/die for male) (n=44 pz), for a period of 6 months. BMI, principal symptoms, liver function, blood lipids, ultrasonography liver were evaluated respectively before and after treatment.The prevalence of steatosis was 100% (26 mild steatosis cases, 38 moderate cases and 23 severe cases) in our patients with Metabolic Syndrome. Of the 43 subjects assigned to receive 300-450 mg/d of UDCA and diet, the hepatic steatosis index decreased on the average, of the 75%. Serum AST, ALT and γ-GT decreased significantly at 3 months already (p0.001).UDCA improves liver enzymes and ultrasonography immaging in geriatric patients with NAFLD or NASH. Unexpectedly, UDCA has resulted in beneficial effects on glycemic control and insulin sensitivity.
