Abstract

Thanks to the remarkable developments of ultrafast science, one of today's challenges is to modify material state by controlling with a light pulse the coherent motions that connect two different phases. Here we show how strain waves, launched by electronic and structural precursor phenomena, determine a macroscopic transformation pathway for the semiconducting-to-metal transition with large volume change in bistable Ti$_3$O$_5$ nanocrystals. Femtosecond powder X-ray diffraction allowed us to quantify the structural deformations associated with the photoinduced phase transition on relevant time scales. We monitored the early intra-cell distortions around absorbing metal dimers, but also long range crystalline deformations dynamically governed by acoustic waves launched at the laser-exposed Ti$_3$O$_5$ surface. We rationalize these observations with a simplified elastic model, demonstrating that a macroscopic transformation occurs concomitantly with the propagating acoustic wavefront on the picosecond timescale, several decades earlier than the subsequent thermal processes governed by heat diffusion., Comment: 30 pages (including supplementary text), 5 main figures, 9 supplementary figures; corrected author list

4. A Grid-Based Approximation Algorithm for the Minimum Weight Triangulation Problem

Abstract

Given a set of $n$ points on a plane, in the Minimum Weight Triangulation problem, we wish to find a triangulation that minimizes the sum of Euclidean length of its edges. This incredibly challenging problem has been studied for more than four decades and has been only recently shown to be NP-Hard. In this paper we present a novel polynomial-time algorithm that computes a $14$-approximation of the minimum weight triangulation -- a constant that is significantly smaller than what has been previously known. In our algorithm, we use grids to partition the edges into levels where shorter edges appear at smaller levels and edges with similar lengths appear at the same level. We then triangulate the point set incrementally by introducing edges in increasing order of their levels. We introduce the edges of any level $i+1$ in two steps. In the first step, we add edges using a variant of the well-known ring heuristic to generate a partial triangulation $\hat{\mathcal{A}}_i$. In the second step, we greedily add non-intersecting level $i+1$ edges to $\hat{\mathcal{A}}_i$ in increasing order of their length and obtain a partial triangulation $\mathcal{A}_{ i+1}$. The ring heuristic is known to yield only an $O(\log n)$-approximation even for a convex polygon and the greedy heuristic achieves only a $\Theta(\sqrt{n})$-approximation. Therefore, it is surprising that their combination leads to an improved approximation ratio of $14$. For the proof, we identify several useful properties of $\hat{\mathcal{A}}_i$ and combine it with a new Euler characteristic based technique to show that $\hat{\mathcal{A}}_i$ has more edges than $\mathcal{T}_i$; here $\mathcal{T}_i$ is the partial triangulation consisting of level $\le i$ edges of some minimum weight triangulation. We then use a simple greedy stays ahead proof strategy to bound the approximation ratio.

5. Risk factors for advanced colorectal neoplasia and colorectal cancer detected at surveillance: a nationwide study in the modern era.

Abstract

Aim: Recommendations for surveillance after colonoscopy are based on risk factors for metachronous advanced colorectal neoplasia (AN) and colorectal cancer (CRC). The value of these risk factors remains unclear in populations enriched by individuals with a positive faecal immunochemical test and were investigated in a modern setting. Methods and Results: This population‐based cohort study included all individuals in the Netherlands of ≥55 years old with a first adenoma diagnosis in 2015. A total of 22,471 patients were included. Data were retrieved from the Dutch Nationwide Pathology Databank (Palga). Primary outcomes were metachronous AN and CRC. Patient and polyp characteristics were evaluated by multivariable Cox regression analyses. During follow‐up, 2416 (10.8%) patients were diagnosed with AN, of which 557 (2.5% from the total population) were CRC. Adenomas with high‐grade dysplasia (hazard ratio [HR] 1.60, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.40–1.83), villous histology (HR 1.91, 95% CI 1.59–2.28), size ≥10 mm (HR 1.12, 95% CI 1.02–1.23), proximal location (HR 1.12, 95% CI 1.02–1.23), two or more adenomas (HR 1.28, 95% CI 1.16–1.41), and serrated polyps ≥10 mm (HR 1.67, 95% CI 1.42–1.97) were independent risk factors for metachronous AN. In contrast, only adenomas with high‐grade dysplasia (HR 2.49, 95% CI 1.92–3.24) were an independent risk factor for metachronous CRC. Conclusions: Risk factors for metachronous AN and CRC were identified for populations with access to a faecal immunochemical test (FIT)‐based screening programme. If only risk factors for metachronous CRC are considered, a reduction in criteria for surveillance seems reasonable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We present a newly developed laser-driven shock compression platform at the ID09 beamline of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). This platform combines a custom high-power EKSPLA laser with ESRF's high-energy X-ray pulses to perform in situ, time-resolved X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements in materials under well characterized, moderate pressure (up to 1 Mbar) and short-duration shock waves. Its purpose is to serve as a shock driver to study materials under dynamic pressure, focusing on phase transitions in condensed matter. We provide a detailed description of this platform's design and functionalities, along with preliminary experimental results obtained from iron and tin samples subjected to shock compression. These results not only demonstrate the platform's ability to acquire high-quality X-ray diffraction data but also highlight its potential for advancing research in material science and high-energy-density physics. Abstract

We report the quench cooling experiments performed with liquid O2 under different levels of gravity simulated with the magnetic gravity compensation. A copper disk is quenched from 270K to 90K. It is found that the cooling time in microgravity is very long in comparison with any other gravity level. This phenomenon is explained by the isolation effect of the gas surrounding the disk. The liquid subcooling is shown to drastically improuve the heat exchange thus reducing the cooling time (about 20 times). The effect of subcooling on the heat transfer is analyzed at different gravity levels. It is shown that such type of experiments cannot be used for the analysis of the critical heat flux (CHF) of the boiling crisis. The minimum heat flux (MHF) of boiling is analyzed instead.

20. Isolated cerebellar metastasis from urothelial carcinoma:A case report of a rare phenomenon

Abstract

Introduction: Although urothelial carcinoma (UC) generally is non-invasive, contrastingly in 25% of patients UC metastasizes. Isolated central nervous system (CNS) metastasis from UC without other distant metastases are considered rare. In this report we describe a patient with an isolated and solitary cerebellar metastasis from UC. Research question: In this case report we explore the value of histological analysis of CNS metastases, imaging, treatment options and survival. Material and methods: A rare case is presented of a patient diagnosed with an isolated CNS metastasis originating from UC. Through a systematic review of literature route of dissemination, current imaging and treatment options, and survival are discussed. Results: A 77-year-old male was diagnosed with a pT2N0M0 high-grade UC and treated with transurethral resection and chemoradiation therapy. Several months later, the patient presented with neurological symptoms, and radiological imaging revealed a solitary cerebellar mass. A body CT scan showed no other metastasis. After surgical resection, histology confirmed urothelial origin of the mass, matching his primary UC and the patient received post-operative stereotactic radiotherapy at the surgical site. Recurrence of the cerebellar mass occurred after 6 months for which the patient received re-resection. The patient died 5.5 months after re-resection. Discussion and conclusion: Isolated brain metastases without other distant metastases from UC are rare, so histologic confirmation of the brain metastasis is essential, particularly when the time interval between diagnosis of the UC and brain metastasis increases. Early brain CT is not recommended. PET CT may have additional value in detection of other distant metastases from UC. Despite advancements in treatments, prognosis for CNS metastasis from UC remains poor.

36. Normative Changes in Ethnic and American Identities and Links with Adjustment among Asian American Adolescents

Abstract

Identity development is a highly salient task for adolescents, especially those from immigrant backgrounds, yet longitudinal research that tracks simultaneous change in ethnic identity and American identity over time has been limited. With a focus on 177 Asian American adolescents recruited from an emerging immigrant community, in the current study, we used hierarchical linear modeling and found that ethnic identity tends to remain fairly stable across the 4 years of high school, whereas American identity increases over time. When ethnic identity and American identity were examined simultaneously, consistent with existing research, ethnic identity was positively associated with positive relationships, high self-esteem, academic motivation, and lower levels of depression over time. Although American identity was not significantly associated with depression, positive links with relationships, self-esteem, and academic motivation were found. Both identities were interactively associated with academic motivation. Acculturative implications and the importance of considering the dual construction of ethnic identity and American identity in light of adolescent adjustment are discussed.

Abstract

Abstract Background Abortion-related complications remain a main cause of maternal mortality. There is little evidence on the availability and quality of post-abortion care (PAC) in humanitarian settings. We assessed the quality of PAC in two hospitals supported by an international organization in Jigawa State (Nigeria) and Bangui (Central African Republic, CAR). Methods We mapped indicators corresponding to the eleven domains of the WHO Maternal and Newborn Health quality-of-care framework to assess inputs, processes (provision and experience of care), and outcomes of PAC. We measured these indicators in four components of a cross-sectional multi-methods study: 1) an assessment of the hospitals’ PAC signal functions, 2) a survey of the knowledge, attitudes, practices, and behavior of 140 Nigerian and 84 CAR clinicians providing PAC, 3) a prospective review of the medical records of 520 and 548 women presenting for abortion complications and, 4) a survey of 360 and 362 of these women who were hospitalized in the Nigerian and CAR hospitals, respectively. Results Among the total 27 PAC signal functions assessed, 25 were available in the Nigerian hospital and 26 in the CAR hospital. In both hospitals, less than 2.5% were treated with dilatation and sharp curettage. Over 80% of women received blood transfusion or curative antibiotics when indicated. However, antibiotics were given to about 30% of patients with no documented indication. Among discharged women in CAR, 99% received contraceptive counseling but only 39% did in Nigeria. Over 80% of women in Nigeria reported positive experiences of respect and preservation of dignity. Conversely, in CAR, 37% reported that their privacy was always respected during examination and 62% reported short or very short waiting time before seeing a health provider. In terms of communication, only 15% felt able to ask questions during treatment in both hospitals. The risk of abortion-near-miss happening ≥ 24h after presentation was 0.2% in Nigeria and 1.1% in CAR. Only 65% of women in the Nigerian hospital and 34% in the CAR hospital reported that the staff provided them best care all the time. Conclusion Our comprehensive assessment identified that these two hospitals in humanitarian settings provided lifesaving PAC. However, hospitals need to strengthen the patient-centered approach engaging patients in their own care and ensuring privacy, short waiting times and quality provider-patient communication. Health professionals would benefit from instituting antibiotic stewardships to prevent antibiotic-resistance.
