Objective: Optimising antibiotic use is important to limit increasing antibiotic resistance. In rural Burkina Faso, over-the-counter dispensing of antibiotics in community pharmacies and non-licensed medicine retail outlets facilitates self-medication. We investigated its extent, reasons and dispensing patterns.Methods: In an exploratory mixed-method design conducted between October 2020 and December 2021, this study first explored illness perceptions, the range of healthcare providers in communities, antibiotics knowledge and reasons for seeking healthcare outside healthcare facilities. Second, frequencies of illness and healthcare utilisation in the last 3 months were quantitatively measured.Results: Participants distinguished between natural and magico-religious illnesses, according to origins. For illnesses considered to be 'natural', healthcare was mainly sought at healthcare facilities, private pharmacies and informal drug outlets. For illnesses considered as magico-religious, traditional healers were mainly visited. Antibiotics were perceived in the community as medicines similar to painkillers. Healthcare-seeking outside healthcare facilities was reported by 660/1973 (33.5%) participants reporting symptoms, including 315 (47.7%) to informal vendors. Healthcare seeking outside facilities was less common for 0-4-year-olds (58/534, 10.9% vs. 379/850, 44.1% for >= 5-year-olds) and decreased with improving socio-economic status (108/237, 45.6% in the lowest quintile; 96/418, 23.0% in the highest). Reported reasons included financial limitation, and also proximity to informal drug vendors, long waiting times at healthcare facilities, and health professionals' non-empathetic attitudes towards their patients.Conclusion: This study highlights the need to facilitate and promote access to healthcare facilities through universal health insurance and patient-centred care including reducing patients' waiting time. Furthermore, community-level antibiotic stewardship programmes should include community pharmacies and informal vendors.

Background and Objectives: Many clinical supervisors in family medicine feel ill-equipped to teach senior care to their family medicine residents (trainees). We therefore sought to explore their preferred learning strategies for improving their clinical and teaching skills with regard to senior care. Methods: In this qualitative study, we conducted focus groups and interviews with supervisors from four family medicine clinics, to explore their preferred educational strategies. We selected four clinics using a maximum-variation strategy, based on a survey assessing continuing professional development (CPD) needs. The qualitative thematic analysis followed an inductive/deductive approach based on McGuire’s attributes of persuasive communication. Results: The four focus groups and nine interviews with 53 supervisors (37 physicians, 9 nurses, 4 psychologists, 1 social worker, 1 nutritionist, 1 sexologist) revealed that supervisors preferred being trained by experienced trainers specialized in senior care, from various professional backgrounds, and knowledgeable about local community resources. They valued practical training the most, such as clinical case discussions based on real cases, clinical tools, and mentoring. The findings also suggest that training in senior care should be adapted to the supervisors’ experience, profession, workload, and scope of intervention. Supervisors valued repeated CPD with longitudinal follow-up and easy access to trainers and to up-to-date training content. Conclusions: The findings of this project will allow those who design CPD activities to adapt such activities to the preferences of supervisors, so as to improve their clinical and teaching skills in senior care. This, in turn, may help supervisors to embody an appealing professional role model for learners.

Background Evidence shows that pre-existing racial/ethnic disparities in health, sustained by complex and intersecting socio-economic and structural inequities, have widened due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Yet, little attention had been paid to the lived experiences of people in ethnic/racialised minority communities and to the web of causes and effects underlying COVID-19 related suffering. We conducted a study to explore Sub-Saharan African communities’ needs, perceptions, and different experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic and its control measures in the Antwerp metropolitan area (Belgium), from the perspective of Sub-Saharan African communities in 2020. Methods We conducted a qualitative study with an interpretative ethnographical approach. We used an iterative and participatory methodology: We set up a community advisory board which advised on different stages of the research process. Interviews and a group discussion were conducted online, using a secured web conference account, via telephone, and face-to-face. We analysed the data inductively using a thematic analytical approach. Results People in SSA communities, who mostly used social media for information, struggled with misinformation about the new virus and prevention measures. A big number were prone to misinformation about the origin of the pandemic, risk of infection with COVID-19, and the prevention measures such as testing, contact tracing, and future vaccination. SSA communities were not only affected by the epidemic, but to a larger extent by the control strategies, especially the lockdown. The combination of multiple social and economic disadvantages were significant in shaping people’s experience of the pandemic and its control measures. In turn, these experiences influences people’s perceptions and attitudes, and in some way impaired them to follow some public health COVID-19 prevention guidelines, leading to vicious cycles. Conclusion With the prolonged continuation of the COVID-19 epidemic and widening disparities, it is urgent and important it is to involve ethic/racialised minority communities in response strategies that not only address the needs of SSA communities, but also build on their strengths and agency. Findings from this study may inform future responses to epidemic outbreaks while considering input from ethnic/racialised minorities.

It builds on the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and subsequently the war in the Donbas region of Ukraine, and has become a large-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine from three directions, Crimea in the south, Russia in the east, and Belarus in the north. Despite the geopolitical background that, in the eyes of Russia, justifes its annexation of regions in and around Ukraine, we cannot turn a blind eye towards the untold miseries of the citizens of the invaded country. Although it is unclear as to how the situation will unfold, what is clear is that lives are being lost, many civilians are being injured, traumatized, and valuable assets destroyed. Taking into consideration that the population of the countries involved in this conflict totals nearly 200 million citizens, many lives on both sides will be sacrifced, millions of people displaced, Europe will be overrun with new refugees, and global world economics will be disrupted by the war itself and by the sanctions imposed on Russia.

Historically, across Europe, data and research on racialised minority groups have not been collected or carried out in a sufficient, adequate, or appropriate manner. Yet, to understand emerging and existing health disparities among such groups, researchers and policymakers must obtain and use data to build evidence that informs decision-making and action on key structural and social determinants of health. This systematic search and review aims to contribute to closing this gap and promote a race-conscious approach to health research, strengthening the utilisation and deployment of data and research on racialised minority groups in Europe. Its ultimate goal is to improve equality and equity in health. Concretely, the study will do so by reviewing and critically analysing the usage of the concepts of race, ethnicity, and their related euphemisms and proxies in health-related research. It will examine the collection, use, and deployment of data and research on racialised minority groups in this area. The study will focus on Belgium, France, and the Netherlands, three countries with graphical proximity and several similarities, one of which is the limited attention that is given to racism and racial inequalities in health in research and policy. This choice is also justified by practical knowledge of the context and languages. The results of the review will be used to develop guidance on how to use and deploy data and research on and with racialised groups. The review is part of a larger project which aims to promote race-conscious research and data. The project does this by a three-pronged approach which: 1) highlights the need for a race-conscious approach when collecting and using data, carrying out research on racialised minority groups; 2) builds expertise for their effective use and deployment, and; 3) creates a knowledge network and community of practice for public health researchers working in Europe.

Background The importance of community involvement in the response against disease outbreaks has been well established. However, we lack insights into local communities’ experiences in coping with the current COVID-19 pandemic. This study explored both the impact of, and response to, COVID-19 within the Orthodox Jewish communities of Antwerp (Belgium) during the first lockdown period (March 2020 – May 2020). Methods We conducted an explorative qualitative study using a participatory approach. First, we performed a community mapping to identify relevant stakeholders. Through the active involvement of a community advisory board and based on qualitative interviews with key-informants and community members, we elicited lived experiences, attitudes, and perceptions towards COVID-19. Interviews were conducted both face-to-face and using online web conferencing technology. Data were analyzed inductively according to the principles of thematic analysis. Results Government-issued outbreak control measures presented context-specific challenges to the Orthodox Jewish communities in Antwerp. They related mainly to the remote organization of religious life, and practicing physical distancing in socially and culturally strongly connected communities. Existing community resources were rapidly mobilized to adapt to the outbreak and to self-organize response initiatives within communities. The active involvement of community and religious leaders in risk communication proved to be of great importance to facilitate the coverage and uptake of pandemic control measures while protecting essential community values and traditions. Creating bottom-up and community-adapted communication strategies, including addressing language barriers and involving Rabbis in the dissemination of prevention messages, fostered a feeling of trust in government’s response measures. However, unmet information and prevention needs were also identified, such as the need for inclusive communication by public authorities and the need to mitigate the negative effects of stigmatization. Conclusion The experiences of Orthodox Jewish communities in Antwerp demonstrate a valuable example of a feasible community-centered approach to health emergencies. Increasing the engagement of communities in local decision-making and governance structures remains a key strategy to respond to unmet information and prevention needs.

The purpose of this essay is to understand the language of spiritual work and healing in St. Lucia as well as the moral impregnation of the term obeah. This ethnographic study of ordinary ethics of obeah explores the significant gap between the designation and auto-legitimation of healers and spiritual workers. Because, in most cases, the term is not used by practitioners to identify their spiritual and healing practice, the author proposes to relocate the definition of obeah from its specific practices to its moral burden. This approach helps reevaluate the use of obeah in social science writings related to the St. Lucian context. Social scientists must be very attentive to not contribute to the othering of healing and spiritual practices and to consider their involvement in its construction.

This article considers the difficulty of applying ethical norms as part of an anthropological research on moralities and ethics of healing practices in St. Lucia (Caribbean). This reflection is based on the moral evaluations related to obeah, locally conceived as a set of magical, religious and witchcraft practices that helps to manage disease and misfortune. Through the analysis of local conceptions surrounding the ethical notions of autonomy and confidentiality, I call attention to potential nuisance caused by the application of principles of beneficence and respect for the individual. Indeed, local idioms that are moral discretion and self-sufficiency, which can respectively refer to the concepts of autonomy and confidentiality, are, paradoxically, both valued and likely to be associated with dubious morality. I will demonstrate that the fact of applying these principles in all ethnographic relationship may harm interlocutors by increasing, in the case of St. Lucia, the risk of witchcraft accusations and derogatory moral attributions. The anthropological field experience presented here questions the principles of beneficence and respect for the individual as defined in the field of research ethics; it also imposes the need to think about their adaptation to suit local representations. This leads to recommend a pragmatic and emerging ethics of anthropological research/practice.

La notion de résistance est utilisée dans des domaines comme la physique ou la mécanique, mais l’emploi qui nous intéresse ici est la résistance comme pratique sociale et comme concept, utilisé en sciences sociales pour décrire des mouvements sociaux et des pratiques individuelles de rébellion. D’abord souvent restreinte au monde politique (entendons par là les partis et les institutions politiques), la compréhension de la notion de résistance s’est élargie à toutes les sphères de la société. Résister, c’est ainsi mettre en pratique une forme d’opposition au pouvoir en place, au pouvoir dominant ou hégémonique. C’est ainsi par exemple que la sociologie politique (Neumann 2012) ou la philosophie politique (Rancière 1995) peuvent concevoir les révoltes, les rébellions ou les mouvements d’opposition au pouvoir d’État. Pensons aussi aux travaux de Wa Thiong’o (1987 : 2) qui étudie « les réalités africaines en tant qu’elles sont affectées par la grande lutte entre les deux forces mutuellement opposées en Afrique aujourd'hui: une tradition impérialiste d'une part et une tradition de résistance de l'autre ». Parler de résistance passe donc nécessairement par une analyse des formes d’oppression et d’impérialisme existantes, là où la résistance est conçue une forme de ‘réaction à’ une forme de contre-pouvoir. Comment les personnes qui ne sont pas du côté du pouvoir en place résistent-elles aux puissants ? L’analyse des pratiques de résistance vise dès lors à rendre compte de la participation sociale ou des actions des personnes dominées par le système politique et économique. Toutefois, la binarité domination / résistance doit être questionnée et réfléchie, entre autres pour mieux saisir les manifestations de pouvoir et de domination à l’œuvre (Ortner 1995 ; Foucault 1978). Dans sa célèbre ethnographie menée en Malaisie, le politologue James C. Scott (1985) étudie les relations de pouvoir au sein de mouvements de résistance paysanne. Scott montre notamment que les mouvements de résistance sont le fruit d’une réflexion éthique qui se base entre autres sur des notions d’injustice, et non – comme les intellectuels avaient plutôt tendance à penser les formes de résistance populaire – comme le résultat d’un attrait inné pour la violence ou d’une forme spontanée de rébellion. Cette perspective admet ainsi la possibilité généralisée d’actions contestatrices auparavant cantonnées aux sphères politiques formelles. Il évoque notamment les ‘formes quotidiennes de résistance’ pour rendre compte de ces pratiques de résistance qui paraissent moins organisées. Le concept de ‘résistance infrapolitique’ (Scott 1990) permet de penser le caractère privé de pratiques de résistance, autrement recherchées uniquement sur la scène publique. Le changement social et la lutte politique sont pensés comme des phénomènes ‘discrets’ et non plus seulement visibles dans la sphère publique. Il s’agit donc de comprendre les dimensions ordinaires ou quotidiennes de la résistance, et d’élargir les perspectives qui conçoivent la résistance comme des moments de crises, des pratiques transgressives au caractère exceptionnel, des émeutes et des soulèvements (Bertho 2010, 2013) ou des normes qui s’érodent (Neumann, 2012). Ainsi, concevoir les formes de résistance du point de vue de la vie quotidienne ou de la sphère culturelle constitue en partie une traduction ou une conséquence des perspectives critiques, féministes et postcoloniales en sciences sociales. En effet, alors que la résistance n’était conçue comme un phénomène possible qu'essentiellement du point de vue des institutions et du pouvoir officiel, valorisant ou rendant visibles certaines formes de résistance au détriment d’autres, ce sont les formes invisibilisées de la résistance qui sont aussi à ce jour étudiées. Prenons pour exemple le développement d’une historiographie féministe dans le champ des études caribéennes. Mimi Sheller (2012) y a par exemple montré comment, auparavant, les recherches sur la révolution haïtienne avaient essentiellement mis de l’avant des guerriers héroïques comme Dessalines ou Louverture alors que cette révolution a aussi été rendue possible par les efforts quotidiens des femmes, notamment pour éduquer, nourrir, soigner et ainsi contribuer à faire en sorte que ces guerriers puissent combattre, en plus d’avoir été totalement impliquées dans des combats armés et des mouvements publics de protestation. Cette historiographie de l’émancipation a aussi le mérite d’aller au-delà d’une simple dialectique oppression / résistance, subordination / résistance ou esclavage / liberté pour concevoir les continuités possibles entre ces deux pôles (Sheller 2012). La résistance devient un phénomène à la mode pour les études en sciences sociales et il faut se garder de voir de la résistance partout, en même temps qu’il faut continuer à remettre en question les façons de la penser, notamment en cherchant des formes de résistance dans des comportements apparemment passifs, des silences ou des inactions. Retenons ainsi que la façon dont les chercheur.e.s conçoivent la résistance a des conséquences sur leurs capacités à reconnaître (ou non) certaines pratiques et à les associer (ou non) à de la résistance. À l’instar de Patricia Hill Collins (citée par Wane, 2013), il faut aussi se demander si on serait capable de reconnaitre la résistance en la voyant. En effet, en quoi notre façon de définir la résistance ne réduit-elle pas nos capacités à l’observer, à la concevoir et à en rendre compte ? On pourrait par exemple penser à des formes de projection qui consistent à (vouloir) voir de la résistance là où les personnes concernées n’en voient pas. Dans le cas des études féministes intéressées aux formes de résistance, évoquons les riches travaux de Mahmood (2001) sur la capacité d’agir des femmes. Comment les femmes contribuent à leur propre domination et comment elles y résistent ou elles la subvertissent ? Elle y définit l’agencéité comme ‘une capacité pour l’action que des relations spécifiques et historiquement constituées de subordination permettent et créent’ (Mahmood 2001 : 203). Dans cette perspective, la résistance et le pouvoir sont intimement liés aux conditions de leur possibilité, ce qui signifie que dans différents systèmes de pouvoir, il y aura différentes possibilités de ‘résister’ ou de vivre dans ce système (Mahmood 2005). Cela signifie également que l’agencéité ne doit pas être réduite à de la résistance, dans le sens où elle ne constitue qu’une des formes que l’agencéité peut prendre (Bilge 2010). Les approches orientées vers la résistance sont biaisées par du romantisme et leurs analyses des modes de fonctionnement du pouvoir en sont de ce fait appauvries (Abu-Lughod 1990). Ces approches témoignent de critiques du féminisme mainstream / occidental / blanc, et notamment d’une forme d’exoticisation des femmes du Tiers-Monde en définissant leurs cultures et leurs modes de vie en termes de ‘résistance’, révélant du même coup leurs propres façons de concevoir ce qu’est la résistance et la tendance « chic et en vogue de formuler les actions des gens comme des formes de résistance puissantes » (Villenas 2000 : 80). Dans une analyse des formes de résistance – comme plus largement des pratiques sociales – la décolonisation du féminisme passe par une remise en question du fait de parler ‘au nom de’ (Mohanty 2003 ; Martin Alcoff 1991-1992). Les études postcoloniales et décoloniales se sont construites en parallèle aux mouvements de décolonisation politique des années 1950-1960. Résistance politique et résistance intellectuelle allant donc de pair, des auteurs comme Fanon, Césaire ou Sédar Senghor ont fourni des outils intellectuels pour penser les ‘cultures de résistance’ (Fanon 1952), pour réfléchir aux soulèvements et aux prises de parole des damnés de la terre (Fanon 1961) ou des subalternes (Spivak 1988). Dans son célèbre Discours sur le colonialisme, Césaire (1973) explique comment le concept de Négritude est apparu comme forme de résistance aux politiques françaises d’assimilation. Le champ des études décoloniales et autochtones (en anglais indigenous) se développe grandement ces dernières années, induisant un changement de perspective pour penser les relations de pouvoir et les mouvements de contre-pouvoir. Comme l’écrivent si justement Tuck et Wayne Yang (2012 : 23) à propos du mouvement Occupy de 2011, « pour de nombreuses personnes économiquement marginalisées (le mouvement Occupy) a été une expression bienvenue de la résistance aux disparités massives dans la répartition des richesses; pour de nombreux peuples autochtones, Occupy est une autre réinstallation de colons sur des terres volées ». Le champ des études décoloniales a aussi initié des concepts très importants autour de la décolonisation des savoirs (Smith 1999-2002 ; Harrison 1991, Luste Boulbina 2012 ; Todd 2016 ; Uddin 2011) et de l’esprit (Wa Thiong'o 1987). Il s’agit alors de questionner l’eurocentrisme des sciences sociales et de les retravailler pour une profonde transformation de ses théories et méthodologies (Meudec 2017). La résistance épistémique met alors de l’avant les savoirs indigènes comme forme de résistance au sein de l’université occidentale (Wane 2013) ou est plus largement constituée par toutes les formes de « résistance intellectuelle à la domination épistémique Occidentale », leurs buts étant de « donner de l’agencéité aux Africains à qui une histoire a été déniée en fournissant une historiographie alternative pour combattre l’hégémonie et l’impérialisme Occidentaux » (Ogot 2013 : 18). Mignolo (2013) suggère quant à lui une désobéissance épistémique comme « déprise » par rapport aux modèles politiques et économiques dominants. Encore là, la résistance à des formes d’impérialisme de la pensée, lesquelles ont longtemps mis sous silence les revendications – et tout simplement les voix – des personnes colonisées ou dominées, se fait par la prise de parole et la re-connection des personnes avec leurs propres histoires, paysages, langages et organisations sociales (Smith 1999/2002). Au sein des milieux académiques, plusieurs autres mouvements de résistance sont initiés depuis quelques années, en faveur du slow scholarship notamment (Shahjahan 2014 ; Hartman and Darab 2012 ; Mountz 2015) ou des autoethnographies pour réfléchir et survivre à la précarisation et à la privatisation du travail au sein des universités néolibérales (Reyes Cruz 2012).

L’article décrit les résultats d’une enquête qualitative sur le profilage racial présent dans les pratiques policières et vécu par des jeunes de minorités racisées à Montréal, Québec. Dans plus de la moitié des 48 entrevues réalisées, des jeunes ont partagé des expériences de profilage racial provenant de policiers. Les résultats obtenus révèlent que ce profilage racial n’est pas seulement (ou même principalement) le produit de préjugés de la part des policiers, mais qu’il est le résultat de certaines politiques organisationnelles des services de police., This article describes the findings from a qualitative study of racial profiling in policing and its effects on young people in Montreal, Quebec. In more than half of the 48 interviews, young people spoke of experiences of racial profiling by police officers. The results reveal that racial profiling is not only (or even principally) the product of police prejudices, but also sustained by organizational policies of the city’s police department.

Cette note de recherche vise à démontrer, à partir des discours de et sur l’obeah à Ste-Lucie, que ce terme, outre le fait qu’il réfère de manière générale à des pratiques magiques et thérapeutiques dans la Caraïbe, doit également être considéré comme révélateur de jugements moraux. L’ethnographie des moralités locales de l’obeah, via la succession de rencontres avec une guérisseuse, permet de comprendre les ethnoéthiques reliées aux pratiques de guérison, les processus et idiomes de légitimation morale, les signes de l’engagement sorcellaire et la réputation des guérisseurs-sorciers. Ce texte amène à concevoir l’obeah comme une métaphore de l’ordre social et moral, et constitue le point de départ d’une réflexion sur la construction des frontières morales et de l’altérité. Il invite également à se questionner sur le rapport entre moralités locales et globales ainsi que sur les enjeux sociopolitiques et moraux de l’obeah., These research notes are intended to demonstrate, from the discourse of/on Obeah in St. Lucia, that this term, besides the fact that it generally refers to the magic and therapeutic practices in the Caribbean, must also be considered as indicative of moral judgments. The ethnography of local moralities of Obeah, via a number of meetings with a healer, provides access to the understanding of the ethnoethics related to healing practices, the process and idioms of moral legitimation, and the signs of witchcraft and reputation of the healers-sorcerer. This text proposes to conceptualize Obeah as a metaphor of social order and morality, and as a starting point for a reflection on the construction of moral boundaries of otherness. It calls to question the relationship between local and global morality and the social and moral issues of Obeah., Estas notas de investigación tratan de demostrar, a partir de los discursos de/sobre la obeah en Santa Lucia, que dicho término, además de referirse de manera general a las practicas mágicas y terapéuticas en el Caribe, debe asimismo ser considerado como un revelador de juicios morales. La etnografía de las moralidades locales de la obeah, vía la sucesión de encuentros con una curandera, permite el acceso a la comprensión de las etno-éticas relacionadas con las prácticas de curación, de los procesos y de los idiomas de legitimación moral, de los signos del compromiso con la brujería y de la reputación de los curanderos-brujos. Este texto lleva a concebir la obeah como metáfora del orden social y de la alteridad. Invita asimismo a interrogarse sobre la relación entre moralidades locales y globales así como sobre los retos sociopolíticos y morales de la obeah.

La constitution des comités d’éthique est assez récente dans le domaine de l’anthropologie et ils soumettent la recherche dans ce domaine à bien des obligations — avant, pendant et après le terrain. Une recherche à Ste-Lucie en 2006, basée sur une compréhension des discours et des rumeurs de sorcellerie et des processus de construction du raisonnement moral associés à l’obeah, servira ici à montrer comment le respect des règlements ou des principes éthiques, tels que définis au sein des comités mais aussi plus largement dans la discipline anthropologique, non seulement est quasiment impossible, mais en plus limite considérablement une recherche qui porte sur des pratiques « secrètes » ou moralement dévalorisées. Cette communication montrera la nécessité de se départir de cette éthique institutionnalisée, au profit d’une éthique personnelle., The establishment of ethics committees is quite recent in the field of anthropology, and they submit research in this field in many obligations — before, during and after the field. A fieldwork in St. Lucia in 2006, based on an understanding of rhetoric and gossips of witchcraft and construction of moral reasoning associated with obeah, will serve to show how compliance with regulations and ethical principles, such as defined in the committees, but also more widely in the anthropological discipline, not only is almost impossible, but also greatly limits research that focuses on «secret» or morally devalued practices. It shows the need to dispose of this ethics institutionalized for the benefit of a personal ethic., El establecimiento de comités de ética es bastante reciente en el campo de la antropología. Este hecho ha sometido la investigación antropológica a muchas obligaciones antes, durante y después del trabajo de campo. La investigación realizada en Santa Lucía en 2006 a propósito de la comprensión de los discursos y de los rumores de la brujería y del proceso de construcción del razonamiento moral asociado con el obeah, servirá para mostrar cómo el cumplimiento de la normativa y de los principios éticos, tal y como son definidos por los comités de ética — y también, de modo más amplio, por la disciplina antropológica- no sólo es casi imposible, sino que también limita en gran medida la investigación a propósito de prácticas «secretas» o moralmente devaluadas. Este documento muestra la necesidad de abandonar esa ética institucional en beneficio de una ética personal.
