International audience; Nearly 300 million t of phosphogypsum (PG) are produced every year as a byproduct from phosphate fertilizer production worldwide. Approximately 58% of the PG are stacked, 28% are discharged in coastal waters and only 14% are further processed. This critical review provides an overview of the physical-chemical properties of PG produced from sedimentary and magmatic phosphate ore worldwide using various analytical tools. Results from more than 25 years of work on PG at École des Mines de Saint-Étienne are presented and critically discussed. In total PG samples from 67 industrial storage sites around the world and PG samples synthesized under different conditions in the laboratory have been considered. The low radioactivity present in PG (particularly PG produced from sedimentary phosphate rock) was identified as the main challenge to using PG as a raw material in construction. Water-soluble and volatile chemical compounds were identified as the main challenge to environmentally sound PG management. Although PG does (in most cases) not pose an immediate threat to the environment the authors recommend processing all PG instead of storing or disposing it, to eliminate potential long-term risks and utilize a relevant secondary resource.

International audience; Toxic effects among fumonisins B (FB), deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone (ZEN) administered alone and combined were investigated in 84-day-old ducks during force-feeding. 75 male ducks, divided into five groups of 15 animals, received daily during the meal a capsule containing the desired among of toxin. Treated animals received dietary levels of toxins equivalent to 20 mg FB1+FB2/kg (FB), 5 mg DON/kg (DON), 0.5 mg ZEN/kg (ZEN) and 20, 5 and 0.5 mg/kg of FB, DON and ZEN (FBDONZEN), respectively. Control birds received capsules with no toxin. After 12 days, a decrease in body weight gain accompanied by an increase in the feed conversion ratio was observed in ducks exposed to FBDONZEN, whereas there was no effect on performances in ducks exposed to FB, DON and ZEN separately. No difference among groups was observed in relative organ weight, biochemistry, histopathology and several variables used to measure oxidative damage and testicular function. A sphinganine to sphingosine ratio of 0.32, 1.19 and 1.04, was measured in liver in controls and in ducks exposed to FB and FBDONZEN, respectively. Concentrations of FB1 in liver were 13.34 and 15.4 ng/g in ducks exposed to FB and FBDONZEN, respectively. Together ZEN and its metabolites were measured after enzymatic hydrolysis of the conjugated forms. Mean concentrations of α-zearalenol in liver were 0.82 and 0.54 ng/g in ducks exposed to ZEN and FBDONZEN, respectively. β-zearalenol was 2.3-fold less abundant than α-zearalenol, whereas ZEN was only found in trace amounts. In conclusion, this study suggests that decreased performance may occur in ducks exposed to a combination of FB, DON and ZEN, but does not reveal any other interaction between mycotoxins in any of the other variables measured.

During force-feeding period, Mule ducks received increasing amounts of feed to force steatosis of the liver. The intensive lipogenesis is associated with high amount of energy to export as heat. The effects of ambient temperature on heat production and energy metabolism were tested on Mule ducks housed in an open-circuit respiration chamber. The metabolizable energy intake tended to be lower when ambient temperature was higher than 22 °C whereas total heat production was lower when ambient temperature was lower than 15 °C or higher than 22 °C, because ducks have reached their maximal ability of heat vaporization even at the lowest ambient temperature. Alternating periods of intense lipogenesis after the meal with periods of resting metabolism helps the ducks to adapt to high ambient temperature.

Dynamic geometry environments offer a new kind of representation of mathematical objects that are variable and behave “mathematically” when one of the elements of the construction is dragged. This chapter addresses three dimensions of transformations brought about by this new kind of representation in mathematics and mathematics education: an epistemological dimension, a cognitive dimension, and a didactic dimension.

Software design is a crucial dimension in the educational use of technology and a key for transformative practices. The choice for this chapter, issued of a plenary panel at the study conference, has been to ask creators and designers of well established and widely used environments to contribute from his/her own unique expertise. After introductory remarks by the coordinator of the panel, each contributor exposes what visions drive his/her work and how.

We present the graph visualization and computional system CABRI-Graph, an interactive tool that can be used by student, teacher or researcher. The user may construct graphs interactively, select algorithms or graph transformations from a menu, and view the results directly on the screen

Recent developments in computerised learning environments have given the concept of microworld a privileged status. In this paper we look at the conception of learning environments based on microworlds which manage knowledge explicitly.

This book is based on a Nato workshop for researchers concerned with the design of intelligent learning environments for geometry. Geometry cannot bereduced to procedural knowledge and its complexity makes it of interest for the development of intelligent tutoring systems. The central theme of the volume is student modeling, which has three aspects: modeling the knowledge domain, modeling student knowledge, and designing the didactic interaction and learner control. Four main issues runthrough the papers in the book: - Knowledge about geometry is not real-world knowledge and its computer implementation implies a reification of geometry. - The learning of geometry involves conceptualization at a number of different levels, which must be reflected when modeling student knowledge. - The design of the interface and the management of the didactic interaction must cope with multiple representations. - Domains of geometry other than plane geometry are considered. The book is part of the Nato Special Programme on Advanced Educational Technology.

Some decades ago the idea of microworld was born and it has been extensively used in numerous areas. A main idea with strong implications for learning is the possibility offered by microworlds which embody theoretical domains and concepts into a physical reality within which learners can freely interact. (Thompson, 1987; Edwards, 1991) The kind of learning such microworlds allows has been discussed in particular in mathematics: (1992) point to the play paradox, a tension between the free exploration of pupils playing with the computer and the intention of a teacher who aims for the development of mathematical ideas.

One of the reasons teachers may resist the use of computers in the mathematics classrooms is the change that this introduction implies about the kind of problems fostering the acquisition of knowledge by the pupil. Some old problems become uninteresting in the new environment. Conversely computers allow the design of some new problems that are impossible in a paper and pencil environment. In our paper we consider the computer as part of the “milieu didactique” : as such it offers specific representations of knowledge, specific facilities and specific feedback to the pupils. We will discuss the role of these characteristics on the way mathematical objects may be perceived on the interface by the pupils and on the solving processes of the pupils when they are confronted to problem situations on the computer, using the geometry program Cabri-geometre.

The role of the computer environment on the problem solving processes is investigated in two kinds of situations in geometry: (a) situations in which the computer giving “objective” feedback is used as a tool and (b) situations in which the computer provides an aid based on an evaluation of the performance of the student (guided activity). In the first kind of situations, we analyze to what extent the constraints and feedback of a computer environment may affect the solving processes and the kind of solution elaborated by the student. After presenting the general principles underlying what an intelligent help provided by a computer environment can be, an example is proposed in the case of a specific geometrical task for which a prototype “Hypercarre” has been designed.

A short survey on the following question is presented: if we associate at each subset F of a hypercube the number c (F) of subhypercubes included in F and maximal for this inclusion, what can be said about maxF c(F)? Or in other words which are the boolean functions of n variables with maximum number of prime implicants and what is this maximum?

In this paper some properties and characterizations of the infinite hypercube are presented. This is used in particular as an illustration for the graph-theoretical concept of connectivity in the infinite case.

Cette thèse a été rédigée en 2004; This work is a mathematical and algorithmic study which aims at preparing an axiomatization or a specification of dynamic geometry. Problems in dynamic geometry arise with the dynamic behaviour of multiple intersections of curves, and partially defined geometric objects. Recent studies have shown that continuous moves are not fully compatible with determinism of dynamic behaviours. This work details this crucial aspect. Using techniques out of the scope of discrete geometry, it is shown that the dynamic behaviour of circle intersections presents unavoidable singularities. An attempt to extend this result to conic intersections is described. Propositions intended to unify the algorithmic aspects for handling partially defined objects, such as points on objects, are presented, starting from the mathematical framework to the operational implementation. This work also shows that the basic mathematical concept of unsigned area does not intrinsically support moves, unlike signed area. By allowing the specification of algorithms to process the dynamic behavior of circle intersections, this work sets a first quality step for evaluating dynamic geometry software, with respect to their mathematical correctness. Several implementations of this work are included in Cabri 2 Plus. At the theoretical level, this work revisits the problem of the nature of dynamic figures.; Ce travail est une étude algorithmique et mathématique préparant une axiomatisation ou une spécification de la géométrie dynamique. Cabri-géomètre est un logiciel qui permet l'exploration de figures géométriques par manipulation directe des objets géométriques qui les constituent. Ce logiciel plonge l'utilisateur dans un micromonde intelligent et constitue ainsi un environnement d'apprentissage pour la géométrie. Les utilisateurs peuvent construire des figures géométriques, explorer le champ des animations et déformations de la construction, élaborer de nouveaux outils avec des macro-constructions, et spécialiser leur environnement pour des tâches spécifiques en y intégrant éventuellement leurs outils personnels. Le logiciel offre des possibilités de programmation par démonstration, mais les utilisateurs ont souvent besoin de manipuler la structure logique du programme construit pour le mettre au point et le maîtriser. Le choix d'une forme particulière pour présenter ce programme tient compte des spécificités du domaine de la géométrie dynamique et de la diversité des utilisateurs. Dans notre travail de prototypage, nous avons spécifié et implémenté un support textuel, mais laissé ouverte la possibilité de le compléter par un graphe. Le profil des utilisateurs a été pris en compte pour définir la forme de ce texte : en effet, la formalisation d'un langage de programmation sous-jacent aux constructions visuelles directes ne doit pas constituer une contrainte, et la familiarisation avec ce langage (moyen de communication entre l'utilisateur et le logiciel) doit se faire de façon inconsciente. Ces exigences ont abouti à l'intégration dans Cabri-II d'une vue textuelle des figures, équivalente à la vue graphique, dynamique autant que la figure (dans ce sens que le programme se construit en même temps que la figure), et où l'ubiquité des objets dans les vues synchrones permet un apprentissage implicite du langage de Cabri-programmation. La " qualité dynamique " de la géométrie dans la figure est traduite par la " qualité formelle " du langage induit, et les manipulations de l'interface sont transcrites en des animations du texte. La démarche consistant à partir d'une programmation visuelle pour l'expliciter en une programmation textuelle est nouvelle, pose des problèmes spécifiques intéressants, et pourrait assez rapidement être complétée, puis être appliquée avec profit à d'autres environnements analogues.

L'hypercube a suscité de nombreuses études engendrant une littérature très dense aussi bien en mathématiques discrètes qu'en informatique. Cet intérêt sans cesse croissant est largement motivé par l'utilisation de sa structure dans de nombreux domaines (architectures parallèles, transfert de l'information, décision multicritère,...). Chacun peut s'étonner des raisons qui font que le cube soit le cube?. Sa simple définition peut déjà apporter une réponse quoique partielle à une telle question. Plusieurs propriétés spécifiques à l'hypercube ont, soit, défini de nouvelles classes de graphes, soit, fait ressortir le rôle remarquable joué par celui-ci dans plusieurs classes déjà existantes. Les (0, 2)-graphes sont une généralisation naturelle de l'hypercube. Il est maximal dans cette classe. Le thème de cette thèse consiste en la définition et la caractérisation de quelques classes de (0, 2)-graphes obtenues à partir de l'hypercube par rajout d'arêtes ou identification de sommets. Nous caractérisons au chapitre II, le graphe de l'hyperoctaèdre comme un {2(n-2), 2(n-1)}-graphe d'ordre 2n, et nous prouvons l'unicité de son cycle hamiltonien et cela à une équivalence naturelle près. Nous donnons, au chapitre III, une caractérisation de l'hypercube en tant que graphe distance-régulier de vecteur d'intersection {d, d-1, ..., 1; 1, 2, ..., d}. Une classe de (0, 2)-graphes minimaux -les graphes de Shrikhande généralisés- y est étudiée et une caractérisation des graphes de Laborde-Mulder comme (0, 2)-graphes de diamètre minimum [d/2] parmi ceux d'ordre 2d-1 et de degré d impair est donnée. Au chapitre IV, nous caractérisons parmi les hypercubes généralisés ceux qui sont des (0, 2)-graphes. Nous présentons une construction de (0, 2)-graphes non sommet-transitifs. On montre enfin que les graphes de Laborde-Mulder et du demi-cube sont plongeables dans le carré de l'hypercube. Dans un dernier chapitre, nous nous intéressons au problème d'existence de (0, 2)-graphe d'un ordre donné. Nous donnons une condition nécessaire d'existence de tels graphes pour un ordre impair. Nous montrons ensuite qu'à l'ordre 18 et 20, il n'existe pas de (0, 2)-graphes, en utilisant à cette fin un algorithme de construction de (0, 2)-graphes. Nous présentons enfin quelques résultats sur la structure locale des (0, 2)-graphes

Cette thèse présente Cabri-géomètre, un logiciel d'aide à l'enseignement de la géométrie. Cabri-géomètre est un cahier de brouillon interactif, un micromonde qui permet de construire et d'explorer les figures de la géométrie euclidienne plane. Il est notamment possible de modifier la position des objets dits quelconques et de voir évoluer la figure en temps réel. Toutes les actions sur la figure se font par manipulation directe (en les désignant avec une souris) des objets impliques. Le terme de micromonde recouvre les environnements d'apprentissage dans lesquels l'apprenant construit lui-même ses connaissances en expérimentant et en étudiant les phénomènes du domaine. Dans une première partie, nous présentons quelques généralités sur l'enseignement intelligemment assiste par ordinateur, les tendances de recherche et la place de cabri-géomètre sur l'éventail des réalisations actuelles. Dans une deuxième partie, nous exposons les spécifications de ce micromonde en insistant notamment sur les problèmes rencontres lors de la définition des interfaces et de la représentation informatique de la structure logique des figures de géométrie
