The Athena X-ray Integral Unit (X-IFU) is the high resolution X-ray spectrometer, studied since 2015 for flying in the mid-30s on the Athena space X-ray Observatory, a versatile observatory designed to address the Hot and Energetic Universe science theme, selected in November 2013 by the Survey Science Committee. Based on a large format array of Transition Edge Sensors (TES), it aims to provide spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy, with a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV (up to 7 keV) over an hexagonal field of view of 5 arc minutes (equivalent diameter). The X-IFU entered its System Requirement Review (SRR) in June 2022, at about the same time when ESA called for an overall X-IFU redesign (including the X-IFU cryostat and the cooling chain), due to an unanticipated cost overrun of Athena. In this paper, after illustrating the breakthrough capabilities of the X-IFU, we describe the instrument as presented at its SRR, browsing through all the subsystems and associated requirements. We then show the instrument budgets, with a particular emphasis on the anticipated budgets of some of its key performance parameters. Finally we briefly discuss on the ongoing key technology demonstration activities, the calibration and the activities foreseen in the X-IFU Instrument Science Center, and touch on communication and outreach activities, the consortium organisation, and finally on the life cycle assessment of X-IFU aiming at minimising the environmental footprint, associated with the development of the instrument. Thanks to the studies conducted so far on X-IFU, it is expected that along the design-to-cost exercise requested by ESA, the X-IFU will maintain flagship capabilities in spatially resolved high resolution X-ray spectroscopy, enabling most of the original X-IFU related scientific objectives of the Athena mission to be retained. Many of the new high energy sources discovered both by INTEGRAL/IBIS and Swift/BAT have been characterised thanks to extensive, multi-band follow-up campaigns, but there are still objects whose nature remains to be asserted. In this paper we investigate the true nature of three high energy sources, IGR J12134-6015, IGR J16058-7253 and Swift J2037.2+4151, employing multiwavelength data from the NIR to the X-rays. Through Gaia and ESO-VLT measurements and through Swift/XRT X-ray spectral analysis, we re-evaluate the classification for IGR J12134-6015, arguing that the source is a Galactic object and in particular a Cataclysmic Variable. We were able to confirm, thanks to NuSTAR observations, that the hard X-ray emission detected by INTEGRAL/IBIS and Swift/BAT from IGR J16058-7253 is coming from two Seyfert 2 galaxies which are both counterparts for this source. Through optical and X-ray spectral analysis of Swift J2037.2+4151 we find that this source is likely part of the rare and peculiar class of Symbiotic X-ray binaries and displays flux and spectral variability as well as interesting spectral features, such as a blending of several emission lines around the iron line complex., 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication on MNRAS

We report on a recent bright outburst from the new X-ray binary transient MAXI J1631-479, observed in January 2019. In particular, we present the 30-200 keV analysis of spectral transitions observed with INTEGRAL/IBIS during its Galactic Plane monitoring program. In the MAXI and BAT monitoring period, we observed two different spectral transitions between the high/soft and low/hard states. The INTEGRAL spectrum from data taken soon before the second transition, is best described by a Comptonised thermal component with an electron temperature of 30 keV and a high luminosity value of 3x10^38 erg/s in 2-200 keV energy range (assuming a distance of 8 kpc). During the second transition, the source shows a hard, power-law spectrum. The lack of high energy cut-off indicates that the hard X-ray spectrum from MAXI J1631-479 is due to a non-thermal emission. Inverse Compton scattering of soft X-ray photons from a non-thermal or hybrid thermal/non-thermal electron distribution can explain the observed X-ray spectrum although a contribution to the hard X-ray emission from a jet cannot be determined at this stage. The outburst evolution in the hardness-intensity diagram, the spectral characteristics and the rise and decay times of the outburst are suggesting this system is a black hole candidate., MNRAS accepted

In recent years, thanks to the continuous surveys performed by INTEGRAL and Swift satellites, our knowledge of the hard X-ray/soft gamma-ray sky has greatly improved. As a result it is now populated with about 2000 sources, both Galactic and extra-galactic, mainly discovered by IBIS and BAT instruments. Many different follow-up campaigns have been successfully performed by using a multi-wavelength approach, shedding light on the nature of a number of these new hard X-ray sources. However, a fraction are still of a unidentified nature. This is mainly due to the lack of lower energy observations, which usually deliver a better constrained position for the sources, and the unavailability of the key observational properties, needed to obtain a proper physical characterization. Here we report on the classification of two poorly studied Galactic X-ray transients IGR J20155+3827 and Swift J1713.4-4219, for which the combination of new and/or archival X-ray and Optical/NIR observations have allowed us to pinpoint their nature. In particular, thanks to XMM\Newton archival data together with new optical spectroscopic and archival Optical/NIR photometric observations, we have been able to classify IGR J20155+3827 as a distant HMXB. The new INTEGRAL and Swift data collected during the 2019 X-ray outburst of Swift J1713.4-4219, in combination with the archival optical/NIR observations, suggest a LMXB classification for this source., Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The microquasar MAXI J1820+070 went into outburst from 2018 mid-March until mid-July, with several faint rebrightenings afterward. With a peak flux of approximately 4 Crab in the 20–50 keV energy range, the source was monitored across the electromagnetic spectrum with detections from radio to hard X-ray frequencies. Using these multiwavelength observations, we analyzed quasi-simultaneous observations from April 12, near the peak of the outburst (∼March 23). Analysis of the X-ray spectrum found it indicative of an accreting black hole binary in the hard state, consistent with the flat/inverted radio spectrum and the accretion disk winds seen at optical wavelengths. Then, we constructed a spectral energy distribution spanning ∼12 orders of magnitude using modeling in JetSeT. The model is composed of an irradiated disk with a Compton hump and a leptonic jet with an acceleration region and a synchrotron-dominated cooling region. JetSeT finds that the spectrum is dominated by jet emission up to approximately 1014 Hz, after which disk and coronal emission dominates. The acceleration region has a magnetic field of B ∼ 1.6 × 104 G, a cross section of R ∼ 2.8 × 109 cm, and a flat radio spectral shape naturally obtained from the synchroton cooling of the accelerated electrons. The jet luminosity is >8 × 1037 erg s−1 (>0.15L Edd), compared to an accretion luminosity of ∼6 × 1037 erg s−1, assuming a distance of 3 kpc. Because these two values are comparable, it is possible that the jet is powered predominately via accretion with only a small contribution needed from the Blanford–Znajek mechanism from the reportedly slowly spinning black hole.

The European Space Agency's INTErnational Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (ESA/INTEGRAL) was launched aboard a Proton-DM2 rocket on 17 October 2002 at 06:41 CEST, from Baikonur in Kazakhstan. Since then, INTEGRAL has been providing long, uninterrupted observations (up to about 47h, or 170ksec, per satellite orbit of 2.7 days) with a large field-of-view (FOV, fully coded: 100 deg), millisecond time resolution, keV energy resolution, polarization measurements, as well as additional wavelength coverage at optical wavelengths. This is realized by two main instruments in the 15keV to 10MeV energy range, the spectrometer SPI (spectral resolution 3keV at 1.8MeV) and the imager IBIS (angular resolution: 12arcmin FWHM), complemented by X-ray (JEM-X; 3–35keV) and optical (OMC; Johnson V-band) monitor instruments. All instruments are co-aligned to simultaneously observe the target region. A particle radiation monitor (IREM) measures charged particle fluxes near the spacecraft. The Anti-coincidence subsystems of the main instruments, built to reduce the background, are also very efficient all-sky γ-ray detectors, which provide virtually omni-directional monitoring above ∼75keV. Besides the long, scheduled observations, INTEGRAL can rapidly (within a couple of hours) re-point and conduct Target of Opportunity (ToO) observations on a large variety of sources. INTEGRAL observations and their scientific results have been building an impressive legacy: The discovery of currently more than 600 new high-energy sources; the first-ever direct detection of Ni and Co radio-active decay lines from a Type Ia supernova; spectroscopy of isotopes from galactic nucleo-synthesis sources; new insights on enigmatic positron annihilation in the Galactic bulge and disk; and pioneering gamma-ray polarization studies. INTEGRAL is also a successful actor in the new multi-messenger astronomy introduced by non-electromagnetic signals from gravitational waves and from neutrinos: INTEGRAL found the first prompt electromagnetic radiation in coincidence with a binary neutron star merger. Up to now more than 1750 scientific papers based on INTEGRAL data have been published in refereed journals. With their sizes larger than 0.7 Mpc, Giant Radio Galaxies (GRGs) are the largest individual objects in the Universe. To date, the reason why they reach such enormous extensions is still unclear. One of the proposed scenarios suggests that they are the result of multiple episodes of jet activity. Cross-correlating the INTEGRAL+Swift AGN population with radio catalogues (NVSS, FIRST, SUMSS), we found that 22% of the sources are GRG (a factor four higher than those selected from radio catalogues). Remarkably, 80% of the sample shows signs of restarting radio activity. The latest INTEGRAL/IBIS all-sky survey lists 219 hard X-ray sources whose nature is still unknown. We report on our ongoing campaign aimed at identifying these high-energy emitters by exploiting the focusing capabilities of the X-ray Telescope (XRT, 0.2-10 keV) on board Swift, which allow an enhancement of the source localisation to arcsec level, thus facilitating the identification of the likely counterpart. By cross-correlating the list of the unidentified IBIS sources included in the latest IBIS catalogue with Swift/XRT archival data, we found a set of 14 objects, not yet reported in the literature, for which XRT data were available. We found no detection in only one case, a single X-ray association in 9 sources, and 2/3 associations in the remaining objects. We then made use of multi-waveband archives to search for counterparts at other wavelengths of these XRT detections and exploited X-ray spectral information in an attempt to determine their nature and association with the IBIS object. As a result of our analysis, we identified a single counterpart for 13 sources, although in some cases its nature/class could not be assessed on the basis of the information collected. More specifically, we found that SWIFT J0924.2-3141 and SWIFT J1839.1-5717 are absorbed AGN, while SWIFT J0800.7-4309 and 1SWXRT J230642.8+550817 are Cataclysmic Variable binary systems. Finally, we found that IGR J14059-6116 is likely associated with the Fermi source 3FGL J1405.4-6119. In the case of XMMSL1 J030715.5-545536 no XRT counterpart was detected. In all the other cases, optical/infrared spectroscopy is necessary to classify properly each X-ray counterpart and confirm their association with the INTEGRAL/IBIS detection., 16 pages, 22 figures, 4 tables. Seventeen years of hard X-ray observations with the instruments of the INTEGRAL observatory, with a focus on the Milky Way and in particular on the Galactic Centre region, have provided a unique database for exploration of the Galactic population of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). Our understanding of the diverse energetic phenomena associated with accretion of matter onto neutron stars and black holes has greatly improved. We review the large variety of INTEGRAL based results related to LMXBs. In particular, we discuss the spatial distribution of LMXBs over the Galaxy and their X-ray luminosity function as well as various physical phenomena associated with Atoll and Z sources, bursters, symbiotic X-ray binaries, ultracompact X-ray binaries and persistent black hole LMXBs. We also present an up-to-date catalogue of confirmed LMXBs detected by INTEGRAL, which comprises 166 objects. Last but not least, the long-term monitoring of the Galactic Centre with INTEGRAL has shed light on the activity of Sgr A* in the recent past, confirming previous indications that our supermassive black hole experienced a major accretion episode just ~100 years ago. We report the quasi-simultaneous INTEGRAL, SWIFT, and NuSTAR observations showing spectral state transitions in the neutron star low mass X-ray binary 1RXS J180408.9-342058 during its 2015 outburst. We present results of the analysis of high-quality broad energy band (0.8-200 keV) data in three different spectral states: high/soft, low/very-hard, and transitional state. The broad band spectra can be described in general as the sum of thermal Comptonization and reflection due to illumination of an optically-thick accretion disc. During the high/soft state, blackbody emission is generated from the accretion disc and the surface of the neutron star. This emission, measured at a temperature of kTbb ~1.2 keV, is then Comptonized by a thick corona with an electron temperature of ~2.5 keV. For the transitional and low/very-hard state, the spectra are successfully explained with emission from a double Comptonizing corona. The first component is described by thermal Comptonization of seed disc/neutron-star photons (kTbb ~1.2 keV) by a cold corona cloud with kT e ~8-10 keV, while the second one originates from lower temperature blackbody photons (kTbb~0.1 keV) Comptonized by a hot corona (kTe~35 keV). Finally, from NuSTAR observations, there is evidence that the source is a new clocked burster. The average time between two successive X-ray bursts corresponds to ~7.9 ks and ~4.0 ks when the persistent emission decreases by a factor ~2, moving from very hard to transitional state. The accretion rate and the decay time of the X-ray bursts longer than ~30 s suggest that the thermonuclear emission is due to mixed H/He burning triggered by thermally unstable He ignition., Comment: Submitted to ApJ: June 1, 2017. We report on X-ray and radio observations of the ultra-compact X-ray binary 4U 1543-624 taken in August 2017 during an enhanced accretion episode. We obtained NICER monitoring of the source over a $\sim10$ day period during which target-of-opportunity observations were also conducted with Swift, INTEGRAL, and ATCA. Emission lines were measured in the NICER X-ray spectrum at $\sim0.64$ keV and $\sim6.4$ keV that correspond to O and Fe, respectively. By modeling these line components, we are able to track changes in the accretion disk throughout this period. The innermost accretion flow appears to move inwards from hundreds of gravitational radii ($R_{g}=GM/c^{2}$) at the beginning of the outburst to $, Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the first broad-band X-ray study of the nuclei of 14 hard X-ray selected giant radio galaxies, based both on the literature and on the analysis of archival X-ray data from NuSTAR, XMM-Newton, Swift and INTEGRAL. The X-ray properties of the sources are consistent with an accretion-related X-ray emission, likely originating from an X-ray corona coupled to a radiatively efficient accretion flow. We find a correlation between the X-ray luminosity and the radio core luminosity, consistent with that expected for AGNs powered by efficient accretion. In most sources, the luminosity of the radio lobes and the estimated jet power are relatively low compared with the nuclear X-ray emission. This indicates that either the nucleus is more powerful than in the past, consistent with a restarting of the central engine, or that the giant lobes are dimmer due to expansion losses., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures. The accretion mechanism producing the short flares observed from the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients (SFXT) is still highly debated and forms a major part in our attempts to place these X-ray binaries in the wider context of the High Mass X-ray Binaries. We report on a 216 ks INTEGRAL observation of the SFXT IGR J16328-4726 (2014 August 24–27) simultaneous with two fixed-time observations with XMM-Newton (33 and 20 ks) performed around the putative periastron passage, in order to investigate the accretion regime and the wind properties during this orbital phase. During these observations, the source has shown luminosity variations, from $\sim 4\times {10}^{34}$ to $\sim {10}^{36}\,\mathrm{erg}\,{{\rm{s}}}^{-1}$, linked to spectral properties changes. The soft X-ray continuum is well modeled by a power law with a photon index varying from ~1.2 up to ~1.7 and with high values of the column density in the range of $\sim 2\mbox{--}4\times {10}^{23}\,{\mathrm{cm}}^{-2}$. We report on the presence of iron lines at ~6.8–7.1 keV, suggesting that the X-ray flux is produced by the accretion of matter from the companion wind characterized by density and temperature inhomogeneities.

The ultracompact low-mass X-ray binary 4U 0513–40 in the globular cluster NGC1851 exhibits large amplitude X-ray flux variations with spectral changes from low/hard to high/soft states which have not been reported previously in other ultracompact X-ray binaries. Using BeppoSAX, Chandra and XMM–Newton archival data together with recent INTEGRAL observations, we reveal a clear sinusoidal periodic signal with a period of ∼17 min when the source is in a typical high/soft state with a dominant soft thermal component. The periodicity disappears when the source is in a low/hard state and the thermal soft component is not required any more to model the data. These properties indicate the orbital nature of the detected signal and imply an high inclination angle of the binary system (>80°).

About 30% of the sources in the 4th INTEGRAL-IBIS catalogue are unidentified in that they lack an optical counterpart. To be able to classify them, X-ray observations are of crucial importance as they can place tighter constraints on the high energy error box, which is usually of the order of a few arcminutes, and allow their broad band spectrum to be studied. To this aim we have cross-correlated the list of all unidentified IBIS sources in the fourth catalogue with the archive of all XMM-Newton pointings, finding a set of 6 objects with archival data. For 1 of them, IGR J17331-2406, no X-ray source is detected by XMM inside the IBIS error box, most likely due to the fact that it is a transient object. In the case of IGR J17445-2747 two possible X-ray counterparts are found inside the IBIS error box: one is very weak while the other is bright but only detected once. In each of the remaining 4 cases: IGR J155359-5750, AX J1739.3-2923, AX J1740.2-2903 and IGR J18538-0102, we find instead a convincing association for which we provide an improved X-ray position and information on the optical/infrared counterpart. We also performed a detailed analysis of their XMM-IBIS spectra and on the basis of all information acquired we suggest that IGR J155359-5750 is an AGN of intermediate type, AX J1739.3-2923 and AX J1740.2-2903 are High Mass X-ray Binary systems, IGR J17331-2406 and IGR J17445-2747 are Galactic transient sources and IGR J18538-0102 could be a background AGN.

The most recent IBIS/ISGRI survey, i.e. the fourth one, lists 723 hard X-ray sources, many still unidentified, i.e. lacking an X-ray counterpart or simply not studied at lower energies, i.e. below 10 keV. In order to overcome this lack of X-ray information, we cross-correlated the list of IBIS sources included in the fourth IBIS catalogue with the Swift/X-ray Telescope (XRT) data archive, finding a sample of 20 objects, not yet reported in the literature, for which XRT data could help in the search for the X-ray and hence optical counterpart and/or, for the first time, in the study of the source spectral and variability properties below 10 keV. 16 of these objects are new INTEGRAL detections, while four were already listed in the third survey but not yet observed in X-rays. Four objects (IGR J00465-4005, LEDA 96373, IGR J1248.2-5828 and IGR J13107-5626) are confirmed or likely absorbed active galaxies, while two (IGR J14080-3023 and 1RXS J213944.3+595016) are unabsorbed active galactic nuclei (AGN). We also find three peculiar extragalactic objects, NGC 4728 being a narrow-line Seyfert galaxy, MCG+04-26―006 a type 2 Low Ionization Nuclear Emission Region and PKS 1143-693 probably a quasi-stellar object; furthermore, our results indicate that IGR J08262+4051 and IGR J22234-4116 are candidate AGN, which require further optical spectroscopic follow-up observations to be fully classified. Only in the case of 1RXS J080114.6―462324, we are confident that the source is a Galactic object. For IGR J10447-6027, IGR J12123―5802 and IGR J20569+4940, we pinpoint one X-ray counterpart, although its nature could not be assessed despite spectral and sometimes variability information being obtained. Clearly, we need to perform optical follow-up observations in order to firmly assess their nature. There are five objects for which we find no obvious X-ray counterpart (IGR J07506-1547 and IGR J17008―6425) or even no detection (IGR J17331-2406, IGR J18134-1636 and IGR J18175―1530); apart from IGR J18134-1636, all these sources are found to be variable in the IBIS energy band, therefore it is difficult to catch them even in X-rays.

The analysis of the third INTEGRAL/IBIS survey has revealed several new cataclysmic variables, most of which turned out to be intermediate polars, thus confirming that these objects are strong emitters in hard X-rays. Here we present high energy spectra of all 22 cataclysmic variables detected in the 3rd IBIS survey and provide the first average spectrum over the 20-100 keV band for this class. Our analysis indicates that the best-fit model is a thermal bremsstrahlung with an average temperature of ~22 keV. Recently, eleven (ten intermediate polars and one polar) of these systems have been followed-up by Swift/XRT (operating in the 0.3-10 keV energy band), thus allowing us to investigate their spectral behaviour over the range ~0.3-100 keV. Thanks to this wide energy coverage, it was possible for these sources to simultaneously measure the soft and hard components and estimate their temperatures. The soft emission, thought to originate in the irradiated poles of the white dwarf atmosphere, is well described by a blackbody model with temperatures in the range ~60-120 eV. The hard emission, which is supposed to be originated from optically thin plasma in the post-shock region above the magnetic poles, is indeed well modelled with a bremsstrahlung model with temperatures in the range ~16-33 keV, similar to the values obtained from the INTEGRAL data alone. In several cases we also find the presence of a complex absorber: one totally (with NH ~(0.4-28) x 10^{21} cm^{-2}) and one partially (with NH ~(0.7-9) x 10^{23} cm^{-2}) covering the source. Only in four cases (V709 Cas, GK Per, IGR J06253+7334 and IGR J17303-0601), we find evidence for the presence of an iron line at 6.4 keV. We discuss our findings in the light of the systems parameters and cataclysmic variables/intermediate polars modelling scenario., Comment: 16 pages, including 6 figures and 5 tables. We report here an all-sky soft gamma-ray source catalog based on IBIS observations performed during the first 1000 orbits of INTEGRAL. The database for the construction of the source list consists of all good quality data available from launch in 2002 up to the end of 2010. This corresponds to $\sim$110 Ms of scientific public observations with a concentrated coverage on the Galactic Plane and extragalactic deep exposures. This new catalog includes 939 sources above a 4.5 sigma significance threshold detected in the 17-100 keV energy band, of which 120 represent previously undiscovered soft gamma-ray emitters. The source positions are determined, mean fluxes are provided in two main energy bands, and are reported together with the overall source exposure. Indicative levels of variability are provided, and outburst times and durations are given for transient sources. In this paper we present radio and high energy observations of the INTEGRAL source IGR J21247+5058, a broad line emitting galaxy obscured by the Galactic plane. Archival VLA radio data indicate that IGR J21247+5058 can be classified as an FRII Broad Line Radio Galaxy. The spectrum between 610 MHz and 15 GHz is typical of synchrotron self-absorbed radiation with a peak at 8 GHz and a low energy turnover; the core fraction is 0.1 suggestive of a moderate Doppler boosting of the base of the jet. The high energy broad-band spectrum was obtained by combining XMM-Newton and Swift/XRT observation with INTEGRAL/IBIS data. The 0.4-100 keV spectrum is well described by a power law, with slope $\Gamma$=1.5, characterised by complex absorption due to two layers of material partially covering the source and a high energy cut-off around 70-80 keV. Features such as a narrow iron line and a Compton reflection component, if present, are weak, suggesting that reprocessing of the power law photons in the accretion disk plays a negligible role in the source., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables, accepted for pubblication on MNRAS

We report on the identification of a new soft gamma ray source, namely IGR J22517+2218, detected with IBIS/INTEGRAL. The source, which has an observed 20-100 keV flux of ~4 x10^-11 erg cm-2 s-1, is spatially coincident with MG3 J225155+2217, a quasar at z=3.668. The Swift/XRT 0.5-10 keV continuum is flat (Gamma=1.5) with evidence for a spectral curvature below 1-2 keV either due to intrinsic absorption (NH=3 +/- 2 x 10^22 cm-2) or to a change in slope (Delta Gamma= 0.5). X-ray observations indicate flux variability over a 6 days period which is further supported by a flux mismatch between Swift and INTEGRAL spectra. IGR J22517+2218 is radio loud and has a flat radio spectrum; optically it is a broad line emitting quasar with the atypical property of hosting a narrow line absorption system. The Source Spectral Energy Distribution is unusual compared to blazars of similar type: either it has the synchrotron peak in the X/gamma-ray band (i.e. much higher than generally observed) or the Compton peak in the MeV range (i.e. lower than typically measured). We present data from INTEGRAL and BeppoSAX satellites showing spectral state transitions of the neutron-star, atoll-type, low-mass X-ray binary 1705-44. Its energy spectrum can be described as the sum of one or two blackbody components, a 6.4-keV Fe line, and a component due to thermal Comptonization. In addition, and for the first time in this source, we find a strong signature of Compton reflection, presumably due to illumination of the optically-thick accretion disk by the Comptonization spectrum. The two blackbody components, which the soft-state data require, presumably arise from both the disk and the neutron-star surface. The Comptonization probably takes place in a hot inner flow irradiated by some of the blackbody photons. The spectral transitions are shown to be associated with variations in the bolometric luminosity, most likely proportional to the accretion rate. Indipendentely from the spectral state, we also see changes in the temperature of the Comptonizing electrons and the strength of Compton reflection., Comment: accepted ApJ

We report on the spectral analysis results of the neutron star, atoll type, low mass X-ray Binary 4U1636-53 observed by INTEGRAL and BeppoSAX satellites. Spectral behavior in three different epochs corresponding to three different spectral states has been deeply investigated. Two data set spectra show a continuum well described by one or two soft blackbody plus a Comptonized components with changes in the Comptonizing electrons and black body temperature and the accretion rates, which are typical of the spectral transitions from high to low state. In one occasion INTEGRAL spectrum shows, for first time in this source, a hard tail dominating the emission above 30 keV. The total spectrum is fitted as the sum of a Comptonized component similar to soft state and a power-law component (Gamma=2.76), indicating the presence of a non thermal electron distribution of velocities. In this case, a comparison with hard tails detected in soft states from neutron stars systems and some black hole binaries suggests that a similar mechanism could originate these components in both cases.

We report on the first census of INTEGRAL/IBIS detections ($\gtrsim 4\sigma$ significance) above 100 keV based on the Core Program and public Open time observations up to April 2005. There are 49 sources detected in the 100-150 keV band of which 14 are also seen in the 150-300 keV range. The low energy sample is dominated by X-ray binary systems of both low and high mass, but also includes 10 active galaxies. Of the binary systems that are detected above 150 keV, more than 50% are associated with black hole candidates, often reported as microquasars. The present survey results are then used to construct LogN-LogS curves for galactic and extragalactic objects in the 100-150 keV band: above a 1 mCrab sensitivity limit we expect that around 200 galactic sources and almost 350 active galaxies populate the sky above 100 keV. While the contribution of individual point sources to the total Galactic emission has been estimated to be around 70-80% between 100-300 keV, we find that active galaxies detected above 1 mCrab account for only about 3% of the cosmic hard X-ray background in the 100-150 keV band., Comment: accepted ApJ

The low mass X-ray binary system 4U 1812-12 was monitored with the INTEGRAL observatory in the period 2003-2004 and with BeppoSAX on April 20, 2000. We report here on the spectral and temporal analysis of both persistent and burst emission. The full data set confirms the persistent nature of this burster, and reveals the presence of emission up to 200 keV. The persistent spectrum is well described by a comptonization (CompTT) model plus a soft blackbody component. The source was observed in a hard spectral state with a 1-200 keV luminosity of 2*10^(36) ergs/s and L/LEdd~1% and no meaningful flux variation has been revealed, as also confirmed by a 2004 RXTE observation. We have also detected 4 bursts showing double peaked profiles and blackbody spectra with temperatures ranging from 1.9 to 3.1 keV., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. Accepted for publication by A&A

In this paper we report the second soft gamma-ray source catalog obtained with the IBIS/ISGRI gamma-ray imager on board the INTEGRAL satellite. The scientific data set is based on more than 10 Ms of high-quality observations performed during the first 2 years of Core Program and public IBIS/ISGRI observations, and covers ~50% of the whole sky. The main aim of the first survey was to scan systematically, for the first time at energies above 20 keV, the whole Galactic plane to achieve a limiting sensitivity of ~1 mcrab in the central radian. The target of the second year of the INTEGRAL mission lifetime was to expand as much as possible our knowledge of the soft gamma-ray sky, with the same limiting sensitivity, to at least 50% of the whole sky, mainly by including a substantial coverage of extragalactic fields. This catalog comprises more than 200 high-energy sources detected in the energy range 20-100 keV, including new transients not active during the first year of operation, faint persistent objects revealed with longer exposure time, and several Galactic and extragalactic sources in sky regions not observed in the first survey. The mean position error for all the sources detected with significance above 10 ? is ~40", enough to identify most of them with a known X-ray counterpart and to unveil the nature of most of the strongly absorbed ones, even though they are very difficult to detect in X-rays. Based on observations with INTEGRAL, an ESA project with instruments and science data center funded by ESA member states (especially the PI countries: Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Spain), Czech Republic, and Poland, and with the participation of Russia and the USA.

We have carried out a systematic analysis of all the AGN brighter than 1 Jansky at 5 GHz available in the BeppoSAX public archive. Our sample includes a total of 26 Radio-Loud AGN, 10 of which are Broad Line Radio Galaxies (BLRGs), 4 Steep Spectrum Radio Quasars (SSRQs) and 12 Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs). Our analysis shows spectral differences (spectral slopes, column densities and reprocessed features) among the different classes of radio-loud AGN. In addition, when compared to Seyfert 1 galaxies, BLRGs appear to have weaker iron lines. Possible reasons responsible for the observed X-ray spectral differences are investigated.

The XMM-Newton satellite has revealed extended X-ray emission from the eastern radio lobe of the Fanaroff-Riley II Radio Galaxy Pictor A. The X-ray spectrum, accumulated on a region covering about half the entire radio lobe, is well described by both a thermal model and a power law. The X-ray emission could be thermal and produced by circum-galactic gas shocked by the expanding radio lobe or, alternatively, by Inverse Compton (IC) of cosmic microwave background photons by relativistic electrons in the lobe. The latter possibility seems to be supported by the good agreement between the lobe-average synchrotron radio index and the X-ray energy slope. However, if this is the case, the magnetic field, as deduced from the comparison of the IC X-ray and radio fluxes, is more than a factor 2 below the equipartition value estimated in the same X-ray region., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ

In June 2015, the source V404 Cygni (= GS2023+38) underwent an extraordinary outburst. We present the results obtained during the first revolution dedicated to this target by the INTEGRAL mission, and focus on the spectral behavior in the hard X-ray domain, using both SPI and IBIS instruments. The source exhibits extreme variability, and reaches fluxes of several tens of Crab. However, the emission between 20 and 650 keV can be understood in terms of two main components, varying on all the observable timescales, similar to what is observed in the persistent black hole system Cyg X-1. The low energy component (up to ~ 200 keV) presents a rather unusual shape, probably due to the intrinsic source variability. Nonetheless, a satisfactory description is obtained with a Comptonization model, if an unusually hot population of seed photons ($kT_0$ ~ 7 keV) is introduced. Above this first component, a clear excess extending up to 400-600 keV leads us to investigate a scenario where an additional (cutoff) power law could correspond to the contribution of the jet synchrotron emission, as proposed in Cyg X-1. A search for an annihilation feature did not provide any firm detection, with an upper limit of 2 x $10^{-4} ph/cm^2 s$ (2 \sigma) for a narrow line centered at 511 keV, on the averaged obtained spectrum., Comment: 2 figures, 1 table, Accepted in ApJL

The black hole binary GS 2023+338 exhibited an unprecedently bright outburst in 2015 June. On 2015 June 17, the high energy instruments on board INTEGRAL detected an extremely variable emission during both bright and low luminosity phases, with dramatic variations of the hardness ratio on timescales of approximately seconds. The analysis of the IBIS and SPI data reveals the presence of hard spectra in the brightest phases, compatible with thermal Comptonization with a temperature of kTe ̃ 40 keV. The seed photon’s temperature is best fit by kT0 ̃ 7 keV, which is too high to be compatible with blackbody emission from the disk. This result is consistent with the seed photons being provided by a different source, which we hypothesize to be a synchrotron driven component in the jet. During the brightest phase of flares, the hardness shows a complex pattern of correlation with flux, with the maximum energy released in the range of 40-100 keV. The hard-X-ray variability for E > 50 keV is correlated with flux variations in the softer band, showing that the overall source variability cannot originate entirely from absorption, but at least part of it is due to the central accreting source. The microquasar 1E1740.7-2942, also known as the "Great Annihilator", was observed by NuSTAR in the Summer of 2012. We have analyzed in detail two observations taken ~2 weeks apart, for which we measure hard and smooth spectra typical of the low/hard state. A few weeks later the source flux declined significantly. Nearly simultaneous coverage by INTEGRAL is available from its Galactic Center monitoring campaign lasting ~2.5 months. These data probe the hard state spectrum from 1E1740.7-2942 before the flux decline. We find good agreement between the spectra taken with IBIS/ISGRI and NuSTAR, with the measurements being compatible with a change in flux with no spectral variability. We present a detailed analysis of the NuSTAR spectral and timing data and upper limits for reflection of the high energy emission. We report on temporal and spectral analysis of the INTEGRAL fast transient candidate IGR J16328-4726 observed with Beppo SAX in 1998 and more recently with INTEGRAL. The MECS X-ray data show a frequent micro activity typical of the intermediate state of Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients and a weak flare with duration of ~4.6 ks. The X-ray emission in the 1.5-10 keV energy range is well described through the different time intervals by an absorbed power law model. Comparing spectra from the lower emission level up to the peak of the flare, we note that while the power-law photon index was constant (~2), the absorption column density varied by a factor of up to ~6-7, reaching the value of ~2x10^{23}cm^{-2} at the peak of the flare. Analysis of the long-term INTEGRAL/IBIS light curve confirms and refines the proposed ~10.07 day period, and the derived ephemeris places the Beppo SAX observations away from periastron. Using the near and the mid-IR available observations, we constructed a spectral infrared distribution for the counterpart of IGR J16328-4726, allowing us to identify its counterpart as a High Mass OB type star, and to classify this source as a firm HMXB. Following the standard clumpy wind theory, we estimated the mass and the radius of the clump responsible of the flare. Since 2005, the blazar 3C 454.3 has shown remarkable flaring activity at all frequencies, and during the last four years it has exhibited more than one gamma-ray flare per year, becoming the most active gamma-ray blazar in the sky. We present for the first time the multi-wavelength AGILE, SWIFT, INTEGRAL, and GASP-WEBT data collected in order to explain the extraordinary gamma-ray flare of 3C 454.3 which occurred in November 2010. On 2010 November 20 (MJD 55520), 3C 454.3 reached a peak flux (E>100 MeV) of F_gamma(p) = (6.8+-1.0)E-5 ph/cm2/s on a time scale of about 12 hours, more than a factor of 6 higher than the flux of the brightest steady gamma-ray source, the Vela pulsar, and more than a factor of 3 brighter than its previous super-flare on 2009 December 2-3. The multi-wavelength data make a thorough study of the present event possible: the comparison with the previous outbursts indicates a close similarity to the one that occurred in 2009. By comparing the broadband emission before, during, and after the gamma-ray flare, we find that the radio, optical and X-ray emission varies within a factor 2-3, whereas the gamma-ray flux by a factor of 10. The unidentified source IGR J16328-4726 was covered with INTEGRAL observations for a long period (~9.8Ms) and was undetectable for most of the time while showing a very recurrent micro-activity with a duration from tens minutes to several hours. We report the discovery of two strong outbursts started at 53420.65 MJD and 54859.99 MJD respectively, the first with a duration of ~1 hour and the second with a lower limit on the duration of ~3.5 hours. Furthermore, the source have been detected in nine other short pointings with significance between 4 and 5 sigma as well as in a one of the revolution (during the exposure ~ 130 ks) at a significance level of ~7 sigma. The stronger outburst spectrum is well described by a power law model with a photon index of ~2.0 and a flux of ~3.3x10^{-10} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1} in the 20-50 keV energy band. The weaker outburst and revolution spectra show the same spectral shape and different fluxes. The combined timing and spectral properties observed during the outburst, the recurrent nature of this transient source, the Galactic Plane location, a dynamic range >170 in the 0.3-10 keV band and >165 in the 20-50 keV and the presence of a IR star in the error circle of an XRT/Swift pointing are suggesting this source as a member of the class of the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients.

The EXIST observatory planned for launch in the next decade will carry outstanding contributions in both Galactic and Extragalactic science with a sensitivity about 10-20 better respect to the flown hard X-ray missions and full sky survey capability. Designed mainly for the survey of SMBH and transients, thanks to the wide field of view (~70x90deg) and large effective area of the High Energy Telescope (HET), the study of spectra and variability at all timescales of all types of Galactic sources will be made possible. EXIST will be also capable to study in detail the Galactic Center (GC) in the hard X-rays. This crowded region as observed recently by Chandra, Integral and Swift has been found to possibly host a high number of high energy sources. In this work we report on the capabilities of EXIST to image the GC region and to detect and characterize the different classes of sources on the basis of their known spectral and variability properties. EXIST will perform the crucial observation tests to study the emission from Sgr A*, using the simultaneous observations of IR and X-ray flares, searching for periodicity to study the Keplerian flow with NIR and/or X QPO, confirm or not the high energy counterpart of SgrA* detected by INTEGRAL and define the spectral shape of the high energy tail. Finally, EXIST can effectively and continuously monitor spectra from Sgr B2 to confirm the correlation of the iron line emission with the hard X-ray continuum and establish its origin.

In this paper, we report on the fourth soft gamma-ray source catalog obtained with the IBIS gamma-ray imager on board the INTEGRAL satellite. The scientific data set is based on more than 70 Ms of high-quality observations performed during the first five and a half years of the Core Program and public observations. Compared to previous IBIS surveys, this catalog includes a substantially increased coverage of extragalactic fields, and comprises more than 700 high-energy sources detected in the energy range 17-100 keV, including both transients and faint persistent objects that can only be revealed with longer exposure times. A comparison is provided with the latest Swift/BAT survey results. Based on observations with INTEGRAL, an ESA project with instruments and Science Data Centre funded by ESA member states (especially the PI countries: Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Spain), Czech Republic, and Poland, and with the participation of Russia and the USA.

Through an optical campaign performed at 5 telescopes located in the northern and the southern hemispheres, plus archival data from two on line sky surveys, we have obtained optical spectroscopy for 17 counterparts of suspected or poorly studied hard X-ray emitting active galactic nuclei (AGNs) detected with Swift/BAT in order to determine or better classify their nature. We find that 7 sources of our sample are Type 1 AGNs, 9 are Type 2 AGNs, and 1 object is an X-ray bright optically normal galaxy; the redshifts of these objects lie in a range between 0.012 and 0.286. For all these sources, X-ray data analysis was also performed to estimate their absorption column and to search for possible Compton thick candidates. Among our type 2 objects, we did not find any clear Compton thick AGN, but at least 6 out of 9 of them are highly absorbed (N_H > 10^23 cm^-2), while one does not require intrinsic absorption; i.e., it appears to be a naked Seyfert 2 galaxy., 15 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables. We report the results of a 3-weeks multi-wavelength campaign on the flat spectrum radio quasar 3C 273 carried out with the AGILE gamma-ray mission, covering the 30 MeV -50 GeV and 18-60 keV, the REM observatory (covering the near-IR and optical), Swift (near-UV/Optical, 0.2-10 keV and 15-50 keV), INTEGRAL (3 - 200 keV) and Rossi XTE (2-12 keV). This is the first observational campaign including gamma-ray data, after the last EGRET observations, more than 8 years ago. Our study was carried out using simultaneous light curves of the source flux from all the involved instruments, in the different energy ranges, in search for correlated variability. Then a time-resolved SED was used for a detailed physical modelling of the emission mechanisms. The source was detected in gamma-rays only in the second week of our campaign. We found indication of a possible anti-correlation between the emission at gamma-rays and at soft and hard X-rays, supported by the complete set of instruments. Instead, optical data do not show short term variability. Only in two EGRET observations (in 1993 and 1997) 3C 273 showed intra-observation variability in gamma-rays. The SED with almost simultaneous data, partially covers the regions of the synchrotron emission, the big blue bump, and the inverse-Compton. The soft X-ray emission is consistent with combined SSC and EC mechanisms, while hard X and gamma-ray emissions are compatible with EC from thermal photons of the disk. The time evolution of the SED is well interpreted and modelled in terms of an acceleration episode of the electrons population, leading to a shift in the IC peak towards higher energies., Comment: Regular paper, Acceped by Astronomy & Astrophysics, 25 pages, 7 tables, 5 figures

The third INTEGRAL/IBIS survey has revealed several new hard X-ray sources, which are still unclassified. To identify these sources, we need to find their counterparts at other wavelengths and then study their nature. The capability of XRT on board Swift to localize the sources with a positional accuracy of few arcseconds allows the search for optical/UV, infrared and radio counterparts to be more efficient and reliable. We analysed all XRT observations available for three unidentified INTEGRAL sources, IGR J18249-3243, IGR J19443+2117 and IGR J22292+6647, localized their soft X-ray counterparts and searched for associations with objects in the radio band. We also combined X-/gamma-ray data, as well as all the available radio, infrared and optical/UV information, in order to provide a broad-band spectral characterization of each source and investigate its nature. All three sources are found to be bright and repeatedly observed radio objects, although poorly studied. The X-/gamma-ray spectrum of each source is well described by power laws with photon indices typical of AGN; only IGR J19443+2117 may have absorption in excess of the Galactic value, while IGR J22292+6647 is certainly variable at X-ray energies. IGR J18249-3243 has a complex radio morphology and a steep radio spectrum; the other two sources show flatter radio spectra and a more compact morphology. Overall, their radio, optical/UV and infrared characteristics, as well as their X-/gamma-ray properties, point to an AGN classification for all three objects., 7 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables. The combination of compact objects, short period variability and peculiar chemical composition of the Ultra Compact X-ray Binaries make up a very interesting laboratory to study accretion processes and thermonuclear burning on the neutron star surface. The improved large optical telescopes and more sensitive X-ray satellites have increased the number of known Ultra Compact X-ray Binaries allowing their study with unprecedented detail. We analyze the average properties common to all ultra compact Bursters observed by INTEGRAL from ~0.2keV to ~150keV. We have performed a systematic analysis of the INTEGRAL public data and Key-Program proprietary observations of a sample of the Ultra Compact X-ray Binaries. In order to study their average properties in a very broad energy band, we combined INTEGRAL with BeppoSAX and SWIFT data whenever possible. For sources not showing any significant flux variations along the INTEGRAL monitoring, we build the average spectrum by combining all available data; in the case of variable fluxes, we use simultaneous INTEGRAL and SWIFT observations when available. Otherwise we compared IBIS and PDS data to check the variability and combine BeppoSAX with INTEGRAL/IBIS data. All spectra are well represented by a two component model consisting of a disk-blackbody and Comptonised emission. The majority of these compact sources spend most of the time in a canonical low/hard state, with dominating Comptonised component and accretion rate lower than ~10^{-9}Msolar/yr, not depending on the used model to fit the data., A&A accepted

The 0.5-150 keV broad-band spectra of a sample of nine bright type 1 Seyfert galaxies are analyzed here. These sources have been discovered/detected by INTEGRAL and subsequently observed with XMM--Newton for the first time with high sensitivity below 10 keV. The sample, although small, is representative of the population of type 1 AGN which are now being observed above 20 keV. The intrinsic continuum has been modeled using three different parameterizations: a power-law model, an exponential cut-off power-law and an exponential cut-off power-law with a Compton reflection component. In each model the presence of intrinsic absorption, a soft component and emission line reprocessing features has also been tested. A simple power-law model is a statistically good description of most of the spectra presented here; an FeK line, fully and/or partial covering absorption and a soft spectral component are detected in the majority of the sample sources. The average photon index (< Gamma > = 1.7 $\pm$ 0.2) is consistent, within errors, with the canonical spectral slope often observed in AGN although the photon index distribution peaks in our case at flat Gamma (~ 1.5) values. For four sources, we find a significantly improved fit when the power-law is exponentially cut-off at an energy which is constrained to be below ~ 150 keV. The Compton reflection parameter could be estimated in only two objects of the sample and in both cases is found to be R > 1., 10 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

[Abridged] We report on a multiwavelength observation of the blazar 3C 454.3 (which we dubbed "crazy diamond") carried out on November 2007 by means of the astrophysical satellites AGILE, INTEGRAL, Swift, the WEBT Consortium, and the optical-NIR telescope REM. 3C 454.3 is detected at a $\sim 19-\sigma$ level during the 3-week observing period, with an average flux above 100 MeV of $F_{\rm E>100MeV} = (170 \pm 13) \times 10^{-8}$ \phcmsec. The gamma-ray spectrum can be fit with a single power-law with photon index $\Gamma_{\rm GRID} = 1.73 \pm 0.16$ between 100 MeV and 1 GeV. We detect significant day-by-day variability of the gamma-ray emission during our observations, and we can exclude that the fluxes are constant at the 99.6% ($\sim 2.9 \sigma$) level. The source was detected typically around 40 degrees off-axis, and it was substantially off--axis in the field of view of the AGILE hard X-ray imager. However, a 5-day long ToO observation by INTEGRAL detected 3C 454.3 at an average flux of about $F_{\rm 20-200 keV} = 1.49 \times 10^{-3}$ \phcmsec with an average photon index of $\Gamma_{\rm IBIS} = 1.75 \pm 0.24$ between 20--200 keV. Swift also detected 3C 454.3 with a flux in the 0.3--10 keV energy band in the range $(1.23-1.40) \times 10^{-2}$ \phcmsec{} and a photon index in the range $\Gamma_{\rm XRT} = 1.56-1.73$. In the optical band, both WEBT and REM show an extremely variable behavior in the $R$ band. A correlation analysis based on the entire data set is consistent with no time-lags between the gamma-ray and the optical flux variations. Our simultaneous multifrequency observations strongly indicate that the dominant emission mechanism between 30 MeV and 30 GeV is dominated by inverse Compton scattering of relativistic electrons in the jet on the external photons from the broad line region., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. For a significant number of the sources detected at high energies (>10 keV) by the INTEGRAL/IBIS and Swift/BAT instruments there is either a lack information about them in the 2-10 keV range or they are totally unidentified. Herein, we report on a sample of 34 IBIS AGN or AGN candidate objects for which there is X-ray data in the Swift/XRT archive. Thanks to these X-ray follow up observations, the identification of the gamma ray emitters has been possible and the spectral shape in terms of photon index and absorption has been evaluated for the first time for the majority of our sample sources. The sample, enlarged to include 4 more AGN already discussed in the literature, has been used to provide photon index and column density distribution. We obtain a mean value of 1.88 with a dispersion of 0.12, i.e. typical of an AGN sample. Sixteen objects (47%) have column densities in excess of 10^{22} cm^{-2} and, as expected, a large fraction of the absorbed sources are within the Sey 2 sample. We have provided a new diagnostic tool (NH versus F(2-10)keV/F(20-100)keV softness ratio) to isolate peculiar objects; we find at least one absorbed Sey 1 galaxy, 3 Compton thick AGN candidates; and one secure example of a "true" type 2 AGN. Within the sample of 10 still unidentified objects, 3 are almost certainly AGN of type 2; 3 to 4 have spectral slopes typical of AGN; and two are located high on the galactic plane and are strong enough radio emitters so that can be considered good AGN candidates., 15 pages, 5 figures, ApJ accepted

The X-ray source SAXJ1712.6-3739 is a very weak Low Mass X-ray Binary discovered in 1999 with BeppoSAX and located in the Galactic Center. This region has been deeply investigated by the INTEGRAL satellite with an unprecedented exposure time, giving us an unique opportunity to study the hard X-ray behavior also for weak objects. The spectral results are based on the systematic analysis of all INTEGRAL observations covering the source position performed between February 2003 and October 2006. SAXJ1712.6-3739 did not shows any flux variation along this period as well as compared to previous BeppoSAX observation. Hence, to better constrain the physical parameters we combined both instrument data. Long INTEGRAL monitoring reveals, for the first time, that this X-ray burster is a weak persistent source, displaying a X-ray spectrum extended to high energy and spending most of the time in a low luminosity hard state. The broad-band spectrum is well modeled with a simple Comptonized model with a seed photons temperature of ~0.5keV and an electron temperature of ~24keV. The low mass accretion rate (~2x10^{-10} Msun/yr), the long bursts recurrence time, the small sizes of the region emitting the seed photons consisting with the inner disk radius and the high luminosity ratio in the 40-100keV and 20-40keV band, are all features common to the Ultra Compact source class., Comment: accepted A&A

This paper shortly reviews a number of significant results recently obtained with data from Galactic Gamma‐Ray Binaries with the INTEGRAL/IBIS Gamma‐ray Imager on‐board INTEGRAL. The Observatory, three and half year after the launch has an unprecedented data base of gamma ray observations covering to a large extent the Galaxy plane and with lower exposure a substantial part of the extragalactic sky. The ESA policy for INTEGRAL is to make publicly available all the data collected after one year of proprietary rights, ensuring at this stage of the mission a valuable data base to the scientific community at large. The IBIS high sensitivity and capability to provide at the same time image, spectra and time profiles of all the sources in the wide field of view (∼1000 squared degree) guarantee a powerful tool to deeply observe the Galactic Centre and exploit class oriented studies of the high energy population. The aim of this work is to identify the infrared (IR) counterpart of the Galactic high-mass X-ray binary IGR J16328-4726 discovered by the INTEGRAL satellite, and to derive the extinction and distance to the system. We present new deep sub-arcsecond JHKs imaging and low-resolution near-IR spectroscopy in the 1.5 and 2.4 μm range of IGR J16328-4726. We report the presence of two near-IR stellar sources separated by about 1.″8 at the location of the unresolved 2MASS source J16323791-4723409, previously considered to be the near-IR counterpart of the X-ray source. From the analysis of their near-IR colors and spectra as well as accurate positions, we uniquely identify the true IR counterpart of IGR J16328-4726. Our 1.5-2.4 μm spectrum of this star is consistent with the published classification O8Iafpe. Assuming this, and in combination with new JHKs photometry, a reddening AV = 23.6 ± 0.7 and a distance of 7.2 ± 0.3 kpc from the Sun are derived.

A systematic analysis of a large sample of radio-loud Active Galactic Nuclei available in the BeppoSAX public archive has been performed. The sample includes 3 Narrow Line Radio Galaxies (NLRG), 10 Broad Line Radio Galaxies (BLRG), 6 Steep Spectrum Radio Quasars (SSRQ), and 16 Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQ). According to the unified models, these classes correspond to objects with increasing viewing angles. As expected, the presence of a non-thermal beamed component emerges clearly in FSRQ. This class shows in fact a featureless continuum (with the exception of 3C273), and a significantly flatter average spectral slope. On the contrary, traces of a non-thermal Doppler enhanced radiation are elusive in the other classes. We find that the iron line equivalent widths (EW) are generally weaker in radio- loud AGN than in Seyfert 1 galaxies, and confirm the presence of an X-ray Baldwin effect, i.e. a decrease of EW with the 2--10 keV luminosity (L) from Seyferts to BLRG and quasars. Since the EW--L anti-correlation is present also in radio-quiet AGN alone, this effect cannot be ascribed entirely to a strongly beamed jet component. The radio galaxy Centaurus A was observed by the BeppoSAX satellite five times from 1997 to 2000. From July 6 1999 to August 17 1999, the source was also simultaneously pointed by COMPTEL on-board of the satellite CGRO. Centaurus A has a complex spectrum with multiple extended components and a strongly absorbed (N_H\sim 10^{23}$ cm${-2}) nucleus well fitted by a power law (\Gamma \sim 1.8) which bends at high energies. When the BeppoSAX and COMPTEL observations are combined together, an exponential cutoff with e-folding energy \sim 1000 keV gives an adequate description of the spectral steepening. A complex feature in emission at 6-7 keV is resolved into two Fe components, one narrow cold line and an ionized line centred at 6.8 keV. Significant variations have been observed in the iron feature, with the less prominent ionized line seemingly being the only one responsible for them: its variations do not appear to correlate with the strength of the continuum. The high energy cutoff and the Fe feature suggest the presence of an accretion flow in the Centaurus A nucleus. However the absence of a significant reflection, the narrowness of the cold line as well as the lack of correlation between the continuum and 6.8 keV line variations disfavour a standard cold/ionized thin disk (at least in the inner regions). A more plausible configuration might be a hot thick optically thin accretion flow surrounded by material with different opacities. Finally, we note that high energy break observed by BeppoSAX and COMPTEL could be also reasonably explained by Inverse Compton radiation from a jet. If this is the case, a structured jet with outer slow layers surrounding a beamed inner region is necessary to explain the strong Fe feature observed by BeppoSAX., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The optical spectroscopic followup of 27 sources belonging to a sample of 30 high-energy objects selected by positionally cross correlating the first Fermi/LAT Catalog and the ROSAT All-Sky Survey Bright Source Catalog is presented here. It has been found or confirmed that 25 of them are BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs), while the remaining two are Galactic cataclysmic variables (CVs). This strongly suggests that the sources in the first group are responsible for the GeV emission detected with Fermi, while the two CVs most likely represent spurious associations. We thus find an 80% a posteriori probability that the sources selected by matching GeV and X-ray catalogs belong to the BL Lac class. We also show suggestions that the BL Lacs selected with this approach are probably high-synchrotron-peaked sources and in turn good candidates for the detection of ultra-high-energy (TeV) photons from them., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables, one appendix, accepted for publication on A&A, main journal.
