1. Enhancing Preschoolers' Creativity through Art-Based Environmental Education for Sustainability

Abstract

Creativity is key in developing students' environmental competence so that they come up with working and sustainable solutions to address environmental issues in daily life. However, these remain under-investigated in both Environmental Education (EE) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) research. Here, we report an action research study conducted in a Greek kindergarten, supporting and exploring little-c creativity in a group of preschool students during an art-based EE/ESD project. Visual art had a two-fold role in the study: it was applied as the pedagogical approach in the project and also functioned as a complementary art-based research method, to focus on the conditions that enable young learners' creativity within an educational intervention. The findings show that preschoolers' creative thinking is enhanced when encouraged to identify environmental problems in their school and leads to actions towards sustainability. This supports the idea that creativity in preschool EE and ESD requires a pedagogical framework that is receptive to innovation, alongside a supportive teacher who incorporates imaginative, collaborative and reflective approaches to unfold and develop students' creative potential.

2. Assessing the Contribution of Relative Macrophage Frequencies to Subcutaneous Adipose Tissue

Abstract

Background: Macrophages play an important role in regulating adipose tissue function, while their frequencies in adipose tissue vary between individuals. Adipose tissue infiltration by high frequencies of macrophages has been linked to changes in adipokine levels and low-grade inflammation, frequently associated with the progression of obesity. The objective of this project was to assess the contribution of relative macrophage frequencies to the overall subcutaneous adipose tissue gene expression using publicly available datasets.Methods: Seven publicly available microarray gene expression datasets from human subcutaneous adipose tissue biopsies (n = 519) were used together with TissueDecoder to determine the adipose tissue cell-type composition of each sample. We divided the subjects in four groups based on their relative macrophage frequencies. Differential gene expression analysis between the high and low relative macrophage frequencies groups was performed, adjusting for sex and study. Finally, biological processes were identified using pathway enrichment and network analysis.Results: We observed lower frequencies of adipocytes and higher frequencies of adipose stem cells in individuals characterized by high macrophage frequencies. We additionally studied whether, within subcutaneous adipose tissue, interindividual differences in the relative frequencies of macrophages were reflected in transcriptional differences in metabolic and inflammatory pathways. Adipose tissue of individuals with high macrophage frequencies had a higher expression of genes involved in complement activation, chemotaxis, focal adhesion, and oxidative stress. Similarly, we observed a lower expression of genes involved in lipid metabolism, fatty acid synthesis, and oxidation and mitochondrial respiration.Conclusion: We present an approach that combines publicly available subcutaneous adipose tissue gene expression datasets with a deconvolution algorithm to calculate subcutaneous adipose tissue cell-type composition. The results showed the expected increased inflammation gene expression profile accompanied by decreased gene expression in pathways related to lipid metabolism and mitochondrial respiration in subcutaneous adipose tissue in individuals characterized by high macrophage frequencies. This approach demonstrates the hidden strength of reusing publicly available data to gain cell-type-specific insights into adipose tissue function.

5. Προσχολική εκπαίδευση για την αειφορία και τέχνη

Abstract

Η παρούσα διδακτορική διατριβή εντάσσεται στο πεδίο της Περιβαλλοντικής Εκπαίδευσης/ Εκπαίδευσης για την Αειφόρο Ανάπτυξη (ΠΕ/ΕΑΑ) στο πλαίσιο της Προσχολικής Εκπαίδευσης. Εστιάζει στην έννοια της δημιουργικότητας, με κατεύθυνση τη διερεύνηση και την επίλυση ενός περιβαλλοντικού ζητήματος στο νηπιαγωγείο. Ειδικότερα η έρευνα επιχειρεί να εξετάσει αν προωθείται η δημιουργική σκέψη των παιδιών της προσχολικής ηλικίας, μέσω ανάπτυξης μιας εκπαιδευτικής παρέμβασης για την ΠΕ/ΕΑΑ, με άξονα τις εικαστικές τέχνες. Το κεντρικό της ερώτημα ήταν: «Προωθεί η ΠΕ/ΕΑΑ τη δημιουργικότητα των παιδιών του νηπιαγωγείου, όταν αξιοποιεί ως όχημα την τέχνη;». Στην προσπάθεια διερεύνησης του κεντρικού ερωτήματος, δομήθηκαν τα επιμέρους ερευνητικά ερωτήματα: 1) Ανιχνεύονται οι ενδείξεις που πιστοποιούν την εκδήλωση της δημιουργικότητας των παιδιών στο πλαίσιο μιας εκπαιδευτικής περιβαλλοντικής παρέμβασης που αξιοποιεί τις εικαστικές τέχνες; 2) Ποιοι παράγοντες επιδρούν στην ανάπτυξη της δημιουργικής σκέψης των παιδιών, κατά τη διάρκεια μιας εκπαιδευτικής περιβαλλοντικής παρέμβασης με άξονα τις εικαστικές τέχνες; 3) Πώς εξελίσσεται η δημιουργική διαδικασία με κατεύθυνση την επίλυση ενός περιβαλλοντικού ζητήματος με τη συμβολή των εικαστικών τεχνών;. Η έρευνα πραγματοποιήθηκε σε ένα δημόσιο νηπιαγωγείο της Αττικής από την εκπαιδευτικό της τάξης, κατά το σχολικό έτος 2012-2013. Η μέθοδος που επιλέχθηκε ώστε να διερευνηθούν τα παραπάνω ερωτήματα ήταν η Έρευνα Δράσης, η οποία ακολούθησε τις φάσεις σχεδιασμού και ανάπτυξης μιας εκπαιδευτικής περιβαλλοντικής παρέμβασης με εργαλείο τις εικαστικές τέχνες, εστιασμένης στη μείωση και τη διαχείριση των αστικών απορριμμάτων. Η ανάλυση των αποτελεσμάτων έδειξε πως η δημιουργικότητα αποτελεί μια ικανότητα-κλειδί, η οποία μπορεί να αναπτυχθεί στο πλαίσιο της ΠΕ/ΕΑΑ, προάγοντας το όραμα για ένα αειφόρο σχολείο. Πιο αναλυτικά, τα ευρήματα κατέδειξαν πως προκειμένου να διευκολυνθεί η ανάπτυξη της δημιουργικής σκέψης των παιδιών του νηπιαγωγείου με κατεύθυνση την επίλυση ενός περιβαλλοντικού ζητήματος, χρειάζεται καταρχήν ένα επιτρεπτικό παιδαγωγικό πλαίσιο, το οποίο λαμβάνει υπόψη τις ανάγκες και τα ενδιαφέροντα των παιδιών αυτής της ηλικίας. Ένα πλαίσιο που παρέχει στους μαθητές επαρκή χώρο και χρόνο και πλούσια ερεθίσματα, ώστε να αναπτύξουν ελεύθερα τις ιδέες τους και να παρεμβαίνουν καθοριστικά στις συνθήκες και το περιεχόμενο της μάθησής τους, αποκτώντας μεγαλύτερο έλεγχο στη μαθησιακή και δημιουργική διαδικασία. Επιπλέον, προϋποθέτει έναν εκπαιδευτικό δεκτικό στην αλλαγή και την καινοτομία που αξιοποιεί μαθητοκεντρικές, ομαδοσυνεργατικές προσεγγίσεις και ‘ανοιχτά’ παιδαγωγικά εργαλεία, όπως είναι οι μέθοδοι που βασίζονται στην τέχνη, ενισχύοντας τη δημιουργική σκέψη και δράση των μαθητών. Έναν εκπαιδευτικό με πρόθεση να διερευνά τις ρητές και περισσότερο τις άρρητες θεωρίες, τις πεποιθήσεις και τις παιδαγωγικές του επιλογές ως επαγγελματίας, οι οποίες εμποδίζουν την εξέλιξη της δημιουργικής διαδικασίας, να στέκεται κριτικά απέναντι σε αυτές, ώστε να είναι πρόθυμος να τις αλλάζει, όταν καθίσταται αναγκαίο. Συνοψίζοντας, η παρούσα έρευνα υποστηρίζει πως: Η ανάπτυξη της δημιουργικής σκέψης των παιδιών κατά την αντιμετώπιση ενός περιβαλλοντικού ζητήματος στο νηπιαγωγείο με όχημα την τέχνη, προϋποθέτει ένα παιδαγωγικό πλαίσιο δεκτικό στην αλλαγή και την καινοτομία και έναν υποστηρικτικό εκπαιδευτικό, ο οποίος αξιοποιεί ‘ανοιχτές’, συμμετοχικές και ομαδοσυνεργατικές προσεγγίσεις που τοποθετούν το μαθητή στο επίκεντρο και του επιτρέπουν μεγαλύτερη αυτονομία και έλεγχο στις συνθήκες μάθησης, ενισχύοντας τη σκέψη και τη δράση του για το περιβάλλον.

Abstract

Obesity-related insulin resistance (IR) may develop in multiple organs, representing various etiologies for cardiometabolic diseases. We identified abdominal subcutaneous adipose tissue (ScAT) transcriptome profiles in liver or muscle IR by means of RNA sequencing in overweight or obese participants of the Diet, Obesity, and Genes (DiOGenes) (NCT00390637, ClinicalTrials.gov) cohort (n = 368). Tissue-specific IR phenotypes were derived from a 5-point oral glucose tolerance test. Hepatic and muscle IR were characterized by distinct abdominal ScAT transcriptome profiles. Genes related to extracellular remodeling were upregulated in individuals with primarily hepatic IR, while genes related to inflammation were upregulated in individuals with primarily muscle IR. In line with this, in two independent cohorts, the Cohort on Diabetes and Atherosclerosis Maastricht (CODAM) (n = 325) and the Maastricht Study (n = 685), an increased systemic low-grade inflammation profile was specifically related to muscle IR but not to liver IR. We propose that increased ScAT inflammatory gene expression may translate into an increased systemic inflammatory profile, linking ScAT inflammation to the muscle IR phenotype. These distinct IR phenotypes may provide leads for more personalized prevention of cardiometabolic diseases.
