Background: In Brazil, Swartzia Schreb. occurs in almost all phytogeographic domains, but the greatest richness of species is concentrated in the Amazon. Question: What are the morphological and anatomical variations of the seeds of species of the Swartzia ? Studied species: Swartzia laevicarpa , Swartzia macrocarpa , Swartzia recurva , and Swartzia sericea. Study site and dates: The species were collected in the Sustainable Development Reserve of Tupé - AM Brazil, in 2017 and 2018. Methods: Cross-sections of the seed coat were cut, to observe the characteristics of the seed coat in the hilar region and opposite it. Histochemical tests were performed on the cross-sections of fresh samples, to verify ergastic substances present in the aril, seed coat and cotyledons. Results: The seeds have a smooth and membranous seed coat, partially covered by a spongy aril in Swartzia recurva , filamentous in S . laevicarpa , S . sericea , and S . macrocarpa . Linear hylum, imperceptible micropyle, cryptoradicular embryo, fleshy cotyledons, containing starch, lipids, alkaloids, protein and the rudimentary plumule. Conclusions: Morphological characteristics of the seed, such as shape, color, consistency of the aril and size of the hilum, are important diagnostic characters in the recognition of this species in the field, through its respective seeds; in the same way, the information on soil seed bank is expanded. The presence of fleshy cotyledons indicates and adaptation to the type of environment in which these species occurs, while the knowledge of ergastic substances present in the aril, seed coat and cotyledons, contributes to the understanding of their germinative processes.

A propagação das espécies de “muricis” é afetada pela dormência de suas sementes, e como ainda, não há um consenso sobre a causa e o método a ser utilizado para superar a dormência, objetivou-se, avaliar a resposta da fratura e integridade dos pirênios embebidos em água e GA3 na germinação de “muricis” (Byrsonima crassifolia (L.) Kunth., B. verbascifolia (L.) DC. e B. coccolobifolia Kunth.), de áreas de savanas de Boa Vista, Roraima. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento inteiramente casualizado e esquema fatorial 3x3, composto por três espécies e três tratamentos pré-geminativos, com quatro repetições de 25 pirênios. Os tratamentos consistiram de pirênios imersos em solução de ácido giberélico (500 mg L-1), durante 48 horas e íntegros; imersos em água destilada, durante 48 horas e fraturados; e imersos em água destilada, durante 48 horas e íntegros. Os pirênios pertencem ao mesmo gênero, mas as espécies respodem de forma diferente aos tratamentos pré-germinativos para início, tempo médio e porcentagem de germinação, porém a imersão dos pirênios íntegros e em solução de ácido giberélico, foi o tratamento mais eficiente para superar a dormência nas sementes das três espécies de “muricis”.

We describe the anatomical structure of roots originating from the apocole of Attalea microcarpa compared to the primary root, by means of usual methods for optical microscopy. The adventitious roots are differentiated in the apocole associated to vascular bundles, and can remain as a single structure or branch. They have the basic root structure characteristic of Arecoideae palms, without schizogenous spaces, which are observed in the primary root, in addition to few air spaces. Mucilages, starch and proteins were present in both types of roots. Adventitious roots of the apocole are described for the first time in Arecaceae. © 2019, (publisher Name). All right reserved.

Astrocaryum acaule Mart. is a palm with underground stem, common in lowland forests, known in Brazil as tucuma-i. The objective of this work was to perform the description and characterization of seeds and of the seedling emergence process, revealing morphological and anatomical patterns of A. acaule. Seedlings were obtained by sowing in vermiculite. The seed is spherical, with variations in shape and size according to the number of seeds in the fruit. Germination is adjacent, with formation of a coleoptile above the cotyledonary sheath. The germinative bud is emitted within between 30 and 130 days. The proximal and distal regions differentiate with growth, forming the seedling and the haustorium that transfers reserves through the reduced apocole. The initial root system differs in the hypocotyl-radicle region, below the insertion of leaf primordia, forming a lateral root and a late primary root. The first eophyll is expanded 120 days after the protrusion of the germinative button, with aculeate petiole, amphistomatic leaf blade, papillose epidermis, homogeneous mesophyll, and vascular system covered by fibers. Morphoanatomical characters reported in this study increase our knowledge about Amazonian palms and on organogenesis in their early stages of growth.

Elaeis oleifera is an oleaginous palm tree native to America. The fruit contains unsaturated fatty acid extracted from the mesocarp. The species is mainly used in breeding programs of E. guineensis in development of interspecific hybrids with higher oil yield and resistance to lethal yellowing. E. oleifera is propagated by seed, which requires the adoption of methods for breaking dormancy and increasing the germination rate. However, there are no studies on the morphology and anatomy of the seed and its ergastic substances; knowing its structure makes it possible to improve planting methods and make them more effective. The aim of the present study was to describe the morpho-anatomy and histochemistry of the seed, characterizing it and contributing information that assists in understanding dormancy. In seeds collected in the experimental area of Embrapa Amazônia Ocidental (Amazonas), morpho-anatomical and histochemical analysis was conducted to detect metabolites (starch, protein, lipids, carbohydrates, and phenolic compounds). The seeds vary in shape, oblong and ovate. The embryo has an oblique embryonic axis, composed of root apical meristem and shoot apical meristem with three leaf primordia. Phenolic compounds were found throughout the seed coat; there are lipids, protein, and pectin in the embryo and endosperm.

The species Dipteryxodorata (Aubl.) Willd. – Fabaceae) is distributed in the Amazon and produces noble wood used for different means; moreover, its seeds are used in the perfume and cosmetics industry, and as medication in folk medicine. Luminosity and substrate affect growth and quality before planting when seedlings are produced in plant nursery. Thus, wood particles of Ochromapyramidale (Cav. ex Lamb.) Urban in substrate supplemented with macro- and micronutrients at 0%, 30%, 50% and 70% shading were used to replace chicken manure in the production with high-quality D. odorata seedlings. The experiment was installed in the plant nursery of Tropical Forestry Experimental Station of INPA, in Manaus – AM. It was based on substrates composed of clay soil, sand and chicken manure at ratio 3:1:1/2of O. pyramidale particles to replace manure at ratios 3:1:1/2; 3:1:1 and 3:1:2. The completely randomized design was adopted, to enable factorial (4x4) analysis through ANOVA; means were compared through Tukey test at 5% at 306 days. Height, neck diameter, number of leaves, leaf area and, root, stem, leaf and total dry matter were measured; the survival was evaluated and, quality standard, assessed through the height/neck diameter ratio and Dickson Quality Index.The substrate with half part of O. pyramidale particles at 70% shading led to higher growth of D. odorata seedlings, to higher quality standards and better survival than chicken manure, allowing environmental valorization through the use of wood and residues of O. pyramidale from plantations in the Amazon.

The rich and diversified Amazonian flora represents an excellent resource of new chemical structures with biological activities. This study aims to contribute with information about the phytochemical profile and phytotoxic activity of the Copaifera species essential oils: Copaifera duckei (Dwyer), Copaifera martii (Hayne), and Copaifera reticulata (Ducke) (Leguminosae - Caesalpinioideae). In this study, essential oils were extracted from leaves and stems by hydrodistillation process in an adapted Clevenger type device. The identification of the essential oils chemical components was performed by gas chromatography coupled mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and gas chromatography (GC–FID). Statistical analyses of the results were obtained by the data were analyzed using F-test and the mean values were compared by the Tukey test at 5% and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA). The phytotoxic activity of these extracted essential oils was tested against two species of invasive plants native to the Brazilian Amazon, namely, Mimosa pudica L. and Senna obtusifolia (L.) Irwin & Barneby). The essential oils effects on seed germination and elongation of the radicle and hypocotyl were observed. The compounds with the highest concentrations in the essential oils were sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, including germacrene D, β-caryophyllene, α-humulene, δ-elemene, and δ-cadinene. Inhibitory effects of the essential oils were greater on root development than on seed germination. Mimosa pudica L. tended to be more sensitive to the phytotoxic effects than Senna obtusifolia (L.) Irwin & Barneby). Leaf oils presented greater inhibitory effects on root and hypocotyl development, whereas stem oils showed greater inhibition of seed germination, although in some cases, these differences were not statistically significant. The leaves essential oils had a greater number of constituents than those of the stem; this was especially observed in Copaifera martii (Hayne). These variations could justify the differences observed in the phytotoxic effects between the oils from the stems and the leaves. The recipient specie Mimosa pudica L. was most affected by the effects of essential oils.

A prospecção agrega valor às informações do presente favorecendo a tomada de decisão. O gênero Jatropha L. é morfologicamente diverso e apresenta importância econômica e etnofarmacológica. Neste sentido, o trabalho objetivou analisar as potencialidades e a evolução científica e tecnológica sobre o gênero Jatropha. A coleta de dados foi realizada em bases de artigos e patentes, sendo realizado um estudo bibliométrico dos últimos 10 anos. Nos artigos científicos as espécies mais citadas foram Jatropha curcas L., Jatropha gossypiifolia L. e Jatropha multifida L. As principais instituições de pesquisa foram o Indian Institute of Technology e Chinese Academy Of Sciences. Os países com maior número de depósitos de patentes são a China, Estados Unidos e Japão. Os principais detentores foram a Council Sci & Ind Res India e Reliance Life Sci Pvt Ltd. As principais Classificações se referem à Química e Metalurgia, sendo as principais subclasses C10L e C07C.

O gênero Jatropha apresenta uma grande diversidade de espécies e potencial socioeconômico, mas existem poucas informações sobre o gênero e estas se encontram dispersas dificultando a tomada de decisão para a inovação. A prospecção científica e tecnológica se apresenta viável nesse processo por indicar temas de interesse para a pesquisa e tecnologia estratégica na tomada de decisão, como é o caso da biotecnologia que tem se destacado por suas aplicações na geração de novos produtos e/ou processos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar as potencialidades e a evolução científica e tecnológica sobre o gênero Jatropha com foco na biotecnologia como agente agregador na agricultura. Foi realizado um estudo bibliométrico, com a coleta de dados nas bases da Web of Science e Derwent Innovation Index. Os dados recuperados foram tratados em software específico e em seguida analisados. Os principais resultados denotam que o número de publicações científicas supera o depósito de patentes. A Índia é o país com o maior número de publicações, enquanto os Estados Unidos é o maior detentor de patentes. As palavras mais citadas pelos autores envolvem a espécie Jatropha curcas e a transformação de seu óleo em biodiesel, a maioria das patentes estão classificadas na Seção C12N e A01H.

Byrsonima crassifolia (L.) Kunth , B . coccolobifolia Kunth and B . verbascifolia (L.) DC. (Malpighicaceae) are sympatric species with high ecological importance in the Roraima savannas of northern Brazil. The three species can be distinguished by seedling characters. The phanerocotylar, epigeal, foliaceous seedling of B . crassifolia is similar to other forest species in the genus. On the other hand, both B . coccolobifolia and B. verbascifolia have phanerocotylar, hypogeal, foliaceous seedlings, representing a newly defined seedling group among eudicot seedling types. Byrsonima verbascifolia has a reduced epicotyl and short subsequent internodes, whereas the long cotyledonary petioles are diagnostic for B . coccolobifolia . Both B. coccolobifolia and B. verbascifolia have cryptogeal germination, which involves characters that presumably protect the plumule from the recurrent fires they are subjected in savannas (e.g., plumule burying, cotyledonary node below the soil surface, and fusion of cotyledonary petioles). This is the first report of cryptogeal germination in the Malpighiaceae as well as in Neotropical eudicots.

Scutellaria agrestis A. St.-Hil. ex Benth., Lamiaceae (trevo-roxo) is cultivated for medicinal purposes by residents of the riverine communities in the State of Amazonas, Brazil. This study aimed to characterize the anatomy and to make histochemical analysis on vegetative organs of S. agrestis. Samples of the leaf, stem and root were collected from five plants cultivated by the communities located in the Solimões river, Amazon. These samples were fixed and prepared following standard techniques for scanning electron microscopy and for light microscopy. Histochemical tests were carried out on sections to detect the main classes of compounds present in the secretion. Numerous glandular trichomes are seen in both leaf and stem of S. agrestis. The leaves are amphihypostomatics and show dorsiventral mesophyll. Hydathodes are present at the tip of the marginal teeth. Anthocyanin pigments occur into the epidermal cells of the stem, petiole, and abaxial leaf surface. The petiole is concave-convex shaped and bears collateral vascular bundles. The stem showed square-shaped, evident endoderm, collateral vascular bundles and parenchymatous pith. The root displays a typical protostelic structure. Idioblasts containing mucilage and phenolic compounds occur in the cortex. These data are important, as they can be useful to identify this species, contributing to the quality control of the medicinal plant. Justicia acuminatissima (Miq.) Bremek., Acanthaceae, is a subshrub found in northern Brazil, where it is widely used by the population of this region as an anti-inflammatory medicine. Despite this popular use, there is no pharmacognostical data to support the correct identification of this species. We therefore performed a morpho-anatomical, histochemical and phytochemical analysis of the leaves of this species, using well-known methods. The leaves are simple, exstipulate, green on the surfaces, and pubescent, with a lanceolate shape, crenate margin, pinnate venation and decussate phyllotaxy. The parenchyma is palisade and spongy, and its vascular system is bilateral. Glandular and non-glandular trichome and cystoliths were also detected. There are diacytic stomata on both the adaxial and abaxial surfaces of epidermis. Histochemical tests revealed the presence of phenolic compounds, amide and protein. Phytochemical tests showed the presence of coumarins, tannins, catechins, saponins and steroids.

Abstract: Piper arboreum Aubl. var. arboreum and P. tuberculatum Jacq. (Piperaceae), both known as "pimenta-longa", are frequently misidentified. Despite the fact that both species are sold as traditional phytotherapeutic products, there are no reports on their quality control. The aim of this study was to prepare and characterize leaf and stem herbal drugs of both species using standard methods aiming to establish parameters for botanical authentication and purity degree for their quality control. Size, shape, color, taste, texture, fracture surface and transection characteristics, and leaf venation patterns are macroscopic diagnostic characters useful to distinguish the herbal drugs when they are not powdered. The following characters are useful for diagnostic purposes of the powdered herbal drugs: cuticular and epicuticular wax patterns, types of trichomes, and wall thickening of the tracheary elements, and shape of the hilum of the starch grains. Emergences are key morphological markers for P. tuberculatum herbal drugs. Physicochemical parameter values were similar in herbal drugs of both species, except acid-insoluble ash value which was higher in the P. arboreum var. arboreum stem herbal drugs. Piper arboreum var. arboreum herbal drugs had the highest metal concentrations. Al, Cu, Mn and V concentrations were the highest, whereas Cd, Co and Hg concentrations were the lowest in the herbal drugs of both species. The results obtained can be used as quality control parameters for the herbal drugs of both species.

O conhecimento dos processos germinativos de sementes com tegumentos resistentes, como ocorre em algumas espécies pertencentes à família Fabaceae, pode fornecer subsídios para a produção de mudas e recomposição de áreas degradadas. As sementes de Parkia apresentam germinação natural lenta e irregular, o que pode ser atribuído à impermeabilidade do tegumento. O trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de avaliar diferentes métodos de superação de dormência física das sementes de Parkia multijuga, P. velutina e P. panurensis. Foram utilizadas sementes coletadas na Base de Operações Geólogo Pedro de Moura (BOGPM), em Coari/AM, submetidas aos seguintes tratamentos: testemunha (T0), desponte (T1), desponte seguido da imersão em água por 8 horas (T2), escarificação mecânica do tegumento em esmeril elétrico (T3), escarificação mecânica do tegumento em esmeril elétrico seguido pela imersão em água por 8 horas (T4), punção com agulha quente (T5), punção com agulha quente seguido pela imersão em água por 8 horas (T6), imersão em ácido sulfúrico (H2SO4) por 30 minutos (T7), imersão em ácido sulfúrico (H2SO4) por 20 minutos (T8), imersão em ácido sulfúrico (H2SO4) por 15 minutos (T9). As sementes de cada tratamento foram submetidas ao teste de germinação, avaliando-se a porcentagem de germinação, tempo médio de emergência de plântulas, índice de velocidade de emergência de plântulas e índice de sincronização. Em geral, todos os tratamentos pré-germinativos aplicados às sementes das três espécies, foram eficientes para aumentar a porcentagem de germinação em relação à testemunha. Os tratamentos de escarificação mecânica com esmeril elétrico na lateral da semente foram mais eficientes na superação da dormência de sementes de P. panurensis e P. multijuga, enquanto a escarificação química com ácido sulfúrico em maior tempo de imersão foi mais eficiente para as sementes de P. panurensis e P. velutina tanto para emergência de plântulas quanto para a formação de plântulas normais. Knowledge of the germinative processes of seeds with resistant coats, as have some Fabaceae species, may help in seedling production and the restoration of degraded areas. Parkia seeds have a naturally slow and irregular germination due to tegument impermeability. This study aimed to evaluate different methods of overcoming physical dormancy in Parkia multijuga, P. velutina and P. panurensis seeds. Seeds were collected at the Pedro de Moura Operations Base (BOGPM), in Coari/AM, and subjected to the following treatments: control (T0), clipping (T1), clipping followed by immersion in water for 8 hours (T2), mechanical scarification of the tegument with an electric emery (T3), mechanical scarification of the tegument with an electric emery followed by immersion in water for 8 hours (T4), needle puncture in hot water (T5), needle puncture followed by immersion in hot water for 8 hours (T6 ), sulphuric acid immersion (H2SO4) for 30 minutes (T7), sulphuric acid immersion (H2SO4) for 20 min (T8), sulphuric acid immersion (H2SO4) for 15 minutes (T9). The seeds of each treatment were submitted to germination tests to evaluate the percentage germination, average time of seedling emergence, seedling emergency speed index and synchronization rate. In general, all pre-germinative treatments on the seeds of the three species increased the percentage germination compared to the control. The mechanical scarification treatments with emery eletric on the side of the seed were more effective in overcoming the dormancy of P. panurensis and P. multijuga seeds while chemical scarification with sulphuric acid with a longer period of immersion was more effective for seeds of P. panurensis and P. velutina for both seedling emergence and normal seedling formation.

Maytenus guyanensis é uma planta medicinal, conhecida popularmente por chichuá, possuindo ação analgésica, antiinflamatória, afrodisíaca e antireumática. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi analisar as características estruturais, da raiz e caule desta espécie como contribuição aos trabalhos anatômicos já realizados para o gênero. O material botânico foi coletado na Reserva Florestal Adolpho Ducke, Manaus/AM onde foram selecionados três indivíduos e de cada um deles retirados fragmentos de 1cm³ do caule e raiz. Amostras foram seccionadas em micrótomo de deslize e coradas com safranina e azul de astra. A análise estrutural revelou-se de acordo com o registrado pela literatura para o gênero. O xilema secundário da raiz e do caule apresentam parênquima axial apotraqueal, raios multisseriados, heterogêneos, vasos solitários, de distribuição difusa, uniforme, seção circular, com parede delgada, pontoações intervasculares alternas e areoladas. Maytenus guyanensis, known popularly as chichuá, possess analgesic, anti-inflammatory, aphrodisiac and anti-rheumatic agents. The object of this present wor was the anatomical analysis of material collected of this species at the Adolpho Ducke Forest Reserve. Stem and root fragments of 1cm were removed from 3 selected individuals. Sections from the stem and root were cut with slide microtome, and stained with astra blue and safranin. The structural analysis of stems and roots was in accordance with the literature available for the Maytenus genus. The secondary xylem of the root and stem presented parenchyma axial apotracheal, multiseriates, heterogeneous rays, solitary vessels, of diffuse distribution, uniform, circular section, with thin wall, bordered and alternate intervascular pits.

Bactris maraja (marajá) é uma palmeira frequente nas margens de lagos e igarapés amazônicos, cujos frutos comestíveis são consumidos pelo homem e pela fauna. Os estudos morfoanatômicos das estruturas reprodutivas podem contribuir com informações que subsidiarão estudos taxonômicos, fisiológicos e ecológicos. O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar características biométricas e morfoanatômicas do pirênio, bem como características histoquímicas da semente. Frutos maduros foram coletados e foram determinadas as dimensões, a massa fresca, e o teor de água, e descritas a forma, coloração e textura. O estudo anatômico foi feito pelo método de inclusão em resina. Foram aplicados testes histoquímicos para detecção dos principais metabólitos. Tanto os pirênios quanto as sementes isoladas apresentaram pequena variação biométrica, exceto para a massa fresca. O pirênio varia de obovado a elíptico, com endocarpo espesso, rígido, formado por células esclerificadas de paredes espessas. A semente é obovada depressa a elíptica, com tegumento fino, cartáceo, marrom-claro, aderido ao endocarpo, constituído de células parenquimáticas espessadas e taníferas; endosperma volumoso, sólido, homogêneo, branco, formado por células oblongas, elípticas e ovais transversalmente, e arredondadas longitudinalmente, com reserva proteica e lipídica; embrião lateral, cônico, pequeno, branco-leitoso, com conteúdo proteico e lipídico, polo radicular indiferenciado e polo caulinar com três primórdios foliares. Bactris maraja (marajá) is a common palm tree at the margins of Amazonian lakes and streams, whose edible fruits are eaten by man and wildlife. Morphological and anatomical studies of reproductive structures can provide information that will subsidize taxonomic, physiological and ecological studies. The aim of this study was to determine the biometric and morphoanatomical features of the pyreneas well as histochemical characteristics of the seed. Mature fruits were collected and we measured size, fresh mass, water content and described shape, color and texture. The anatomical study was performed by resinembedding. Histochemical tests for detection of principal metabolites were applied. The pyrenes and isolated seeds showed small biometric variationexcept for fresh weight. The pyrene is obovate to elliptical, with a thick, hard, sclerified endocarp, formed by cells with thick walls. The seed is compressed obovate to elliptic, with a thin chartaceous seed coat, light brown, adhered to the endocarp composed of thickened parenchyma cells and tanniferous cells; bulky endosperm, solid, homogeneous, white, formed by oblong, elliptical and transversely oval cells, that are rounded longitudinally, with protein and lipid reserves; embryo lateral, conical, small, milky-white, with protein and lipid content, undifferentiated root pole and shoot pole with three leaf primordia.

Bactris maraja Mart., palmeira nativa da Amazônia, ocorre em solos arenosos tipicamente às margens de lagos e igarapés. Apresenta grande importância ecológica, podendo ser propagada vegetativamente (touceiras) ou através de sementes. A propagação das palmeiras por meio de sementes geralmente apresenta germinação lenta, irregular e em baixa porcentagem. Dessa forma, a pesquisa teve como objetivo estudar os efeitos de diferentes temperaturas, períodos de secagem do pireno e extração da semente e períodos de embebição da semente na germinação. Foram realizados três experimentos: 1) Sementes foram submetidas a dois níveis de beneficiamento (sem remoção e com remoção do endocarpo) e seis diferentes temperaturas (20, 25, 30, 35, 40 e 26-40 ºC); 2) Pirenos foram submetidos a 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 e 15 dias de secagem, em que em cada período foi feita a extração da semente; e 3) Sementes foram submetidas a 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 e 5 dias de embebição. As sementes submetidas à temperatura alternada de 26-40 ºC apresentaram maior porcentagem de germinação (acima de 60%), não diferindo entre os níveis de beneficiamento. A secagem dos pirenos facilitou a extração das sementes. Contudo, a secagem e a extração das sementes reduziram a germinação e o vigor. Assim, o beneficiamento não é recomendado. A embebição das sementes por dois dias favoreceu a porcentagem e a velocidade de germinação. Bactris maraja Mart., palm tree native to the Amazon, typically occurs in sandy soils on the shores of lakes and streams. Presents great ecological importance and can be vegetatively propagated (clumps) or by seed. The spread of palm trees by seeds usually show slow, irregular and low percentage germination. Thus, the research aimed to study the effects of different temperatures, drying periods of pyrene and extraction of seeds and soaking periods of the seed in germination. Three experiments were conducted: 1) Seeds were subject to two levels of processing (with and without removal of endocarp) and six different temperatures (20, 25, 30, 35, 40 and 26-40 ºC); 2) Pyrenes were subject to 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 15 days of drying, in each period the seed extraction was made, 3) Seeds were subject to 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 days of soaking. Seeds subjected to alternating temperatures of 26-40 ºC showed higher germination percentage (above 60%), with no difference between the levels of processing. Drying of pyrenes made seed extraction easier. However, drying and extraction of seeds reduced germination and vigor. Thus, the processing is not recommended. The seed soaking for two days favored the germination percentage and speed.

Scutellaria agrestis é utilizada por comunidades ribeirinhas do Amazonas principalmente para o tratamento de otites por via tópica utilizando-se o extrato bruto obtido por maceração. O presente trabalho visou investigar preliminarmente o perfil fitoquímico, a segurança toxicológica e as ações analgésica, anti-inflamatória e antiedematogência do extrato aquoso das folhas de S. agrestis. Foram coletados 80 indivíduos da espécie no horto medicinal da Universidade Nilton Lins, Manaus, Brasil. O perfil fitoquímico foi obtido por meio de prospecção da droga vegetal para heterosídeos cianogênicos, terpenos, compostos fenólicos e alcaloides. A toxicologia foi avaliada pelo teste de toxicidade aguda. As atividades analgésicas/ anti-inflamatórias foram analisadas por meio dos testes de formalina em camundongos e a atividade antiedematogência, pelo teste de edema de pata em ratos. Os metabólitos detectados foram fenóis (taninos hidrolisáveis, cumarinas e várias classes de flavonoides) e terpenos (esteroides livres, saponinas). Não foi possível estabelecer DL50, haja visto que o extrato não provocou a morte de nenhum animal durante o teste de toxicidade aguda, provavelmente devido à ausência de heterosídeos cianogênicos na sua composição. Apesar de não provocar morte, considerou-se que o extrato apresenta uma discreta toxicidade, uma vez que foi observada a ocorrência de espasmos na primeira hora de observação dos animais. O extrato apresentou ainda efeito analgésico e anti-inflamatório significativo nas doses de 30, 100 e 300 mg/kg pelo teste da formalina, sendo o resultado na maior dose equivalente ao obtido com a droga padrão (fentanil). No entanto, não observamos efeito antiedematogênico nas doses testadas durante as 5 horas de registro do edema de pata. Os resultados obtidos nesta pesquisa conferem base científica preliminar quanto à segurança e ao efeito analgésico e antiinflamatório da droga vegetal, o que indica que tal espécie é promissora e expressamente recomendada para maiores estudos farmacológicos in vitro e in vivo. The Scutellaria agrestis is used by Amazonas riverine communities, especially for otitis externa topical treatment, by using the crude extract obtained by maceration. This study aimed to investigate the preliminary phytochemical profile, the safety/toxicity and the analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antiedematogenic activities of the aqueous extract of the S. agrestis leaves. Eighty individuals were collected at the Nilton Lins University medicinal garden, Manaus, Brazil. The phytochemical profile was obtained through a plant drug survey for cyanogenic heterosides, terpenes, alkaloids and phenolic compounds. The extract safety was evaluated by acute toxicity test. Analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities were accessed using formalin test in mice and the antiedematogenic activity, using paw edema test in mice. We detected phenolic (hydrolysable tannins, coumarins and several classes of flavonoids) and terpenoid (free steroids, saponins) metabolites. We could not establish LD50 because no animals died during the acute toxicity test, probably because of the absence of cyanogenic glycosides on the composition of the extract. However, we found that the extract is slightly toxic as animal spasms were observed in the first hour of the test. The extract showed significant analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity on the formalin test (30, 100 and 300 mg/kg p.o.), and the highest dose result was equivalent to the standard drug (Fentanyl). However, no significant antiedematogenic effect was observed during the paw edema test. The results obtained in this study provide preliminary scientific basis about the safety and analgesic/anti-inflammatory actions of the aqueous extract of S. agrestis, which indicates that this species is a promising option for further in vitro and in vivo pharmacological studies.

A utilização de plantas medicinais é uma prática comum entre as populações humanas. O presente trabalho teve por objetivo efetuar levantamento etnobotânico sobre o conhecimento e uso das plantas medicinais em quatro comunidades ribeirinhas do Município de Manacapuru. Foram coletadas informações de 164 moradores locais, selecionados aleatoriamente, por meio de entrevistas semi-estruturadas, observações participantes e visitas guiadas. Os problemas de saúde citados foram classificados de acordo com a Classificação Estatística Internacional de Doenças e Problemas Relacionados à Saúde (CID-10) e índices de concordância foram utilizados para identificar os principais usos de cada espécie. Identificaram-se 171 plantas medicinais, pertencentes a 65 famílias. Lamiaceae (14 espécies), Asteraceae (9 espécies), Fabaceae e Euphorbiaceae (8 espécies) foram as famílias mais comuns. As espécies mais citadas foram Mentha arvensis (hortelã), Ruta graveolens (arruda) e Citrus sinensis (laranja). As folhas foram as partes da planta mais utilizadas e a decocção da folha o procedimento mais comum usado para preparar medicamentos. Os problemas mais comuns citados foram doenças do aparelho digestivo, doenças do aparelho respiratório e problemas com sintomas não classificados. Plantas com índices de concordância maior que 25% foram Plectranthus amboinicus, Chenopodium ambrosioides, Citrus aurantiifolia, Acmella oleracea, Plectranthus barbatus, Mentha arvensis, Citrus sinensis, Lippia origanoides, Lippia alba, Cymbopogon citratus e Ruta graveolens. Estes resultados confirmam que as populações que vivem em Manacapuru ainda utilizam plantas medicinais como uma das formas de tratar suas doenças mais frequentes. The utilization of medicinal plants is a common practice among human populations. The present work aimed to carry out an ethno botanical survey to assess plant knowledge and use of medicinal plants by local people of four riverine communities at the municipality of Manacapuru. We collected information from one hundred and sixty-four local dwellers, selected at random, using semi-structured interviews, participant observations and guided tours. Health problems cited were ranked according to the International Statistic Classification of Diseases and Health Related Problems (CID-10) and agreement indexes were used to identify the main uses of each species. One hundred seventy-one medicinal plants were identified belonging to 65 families. The Lamiaceae (14 species), Asteraceae (9 species), Fabaceae and Euphorbiaceae (8 species) were to most common families. The most cited species were Mentha arvensis (mint), Ruta graveolens (common rue) and Citrus sinensis (sweet orange). Leaves were the most utilized plant part and leaf decoction the most common procedure used for preparing medicines. The most common problems cited were digestive tract ailments, respiratory system illnesses and problems with unclassified symptoms. Plants with agreement indexes greater than 25% were Plectranthus amboinicus, Chenopodium ambrosioides, Citrus aurantiifolia, Acmella oleracea, Plectranthus barbatus, Mentha arvensis, Citrus sinensis, Lippia origanoides, Lippia alba, Cymbopogon citratus and Ruta graveolens. These results confirm that populations living in Manacapuru still use medicinal plants as one of the ways of treating their most frequent ailments.

Piper L. (Piperaceae) é monofilético, com espécies de difícil distinção taxonômica, sendo necessários ferramentas que auxiliem a identificação interespecífica. Os objetivos do trabalho foram descrever os macropadrões e caracterizar in situ a composição química dos cristais caulinares e foliares de Piper arboreum Aubl. var. arboreum, P. callosum Ruiz & Pav. e P. tuberculatum Jacq., visando avaliar o uso dos cristais para a separação interespecífica. Para tanto, amostras foram submetidas à análise em microscopias de luz e eletrônica de varredura, microanálises espectroscópicas de raios-X por dispersão de energia e testes histoquímicos. Foram observados cristais prismáticos cuneiformes, tabulares, cúbicos e bipiramidais; ráfides; estiloides; drusas de cristais em bloco; rosetas cristalinas de estiloides e concrescências cristalinas. Foram descritos 15 macropadrões cristalinos reunidos em três categorias. Os cristais foram classificados quimicamente como: puros de oxalato de cálcio e misturas entre oxalatos e sulfatos e entre oxalatos, sulfatos e sílica. Rosetas cristalinas, concrescências cristalinas silicificadas e 14 dos 15 macropadrões cristalinos descritos são registros inéditos para inclusões biominerais de Piper e Piperaceae. Os macropadrões cristalinos caulinares e foliares observados são constitutivos e úteis à separação interespecífica das espécies estudadas. Ademais, os cristais desempenham funções relevantes para a autoecologia dos taxa de Piper analisados. Piper L. (Piperaceae) is monophyletic, with species of difficult taxonomic distinction, and thus tools that facilitate interspecific identification are needed. The aims of this study were to describe the macropatterns and characterize in situ the chemical composition of leaf and stem crystals of Piper arboreum Aubl. var. arboreum, P. callosum Ruiz & Pav. and P. tuberculatum Jacq., in order to evaluate the use of the crystals on interspecific distinction. Samples were submitted to analyses under light and scanning electron microscopies, energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopic microanalyses, and histochemical tests. We observed cuneiform, tabular, cubic, and bipiramidal prismatic crystals; raphides; styloids; blocky crystal druses; styloid crystal rosettes; and crystal concretions. We described 15 crystal macropatterns, which were distributed along three categories. The crystals were chemically classified as: pure calcium oxalate; and mixtures of oxalates and sulfates, and of oxalates, sulfates and silica. Crystal rosettes, silicified crystal concretions, and 14 out of the 15 macropatterns described are unpublished reports on biomineral inclusions in Piper and Piperaceae. The stem and leaf crystal macropatterns observed are constitutive and useful for interspecific separation of the studied species. There are described, illustrated and compared with related species Eugenia lisboae and Eugenia ramosii. Eugenia lisboae is similar to E. citrifolia, differing by its adaxially concave midvein, triangular and basally connate sepals and ellipsoid fruits. Eugenia ramosii is morphologically similar to E. diplocampta, from which it differs by campto-brochidodromous venation, deltoid or scaly with acute apex and oblong-orbicular sepals that conceal the floral globe but not closing the top of bud, which is globose.

The purpose of this paper was to carry out an anatomical and histochemical analysis of the vegetative organs of Cissus verticillata (L.) Nicolson & C.E. Jarvis, Vitaceae, to contribute for the attest the taxonomic identity of the medicinal plant. Samples from root, stem, leaf and tendril were cleared, dissociated and processed according to the usual methodology for observation under light and scanning electron microscopes. Histochemical tests were performed in order to identify polysaccharides, phenolic and lipid compounds. The C. verticillata root is typically protostelic, and the stem is eustelic with collateral bundles. The tendril presents structural organization similar to the stem, suggesting a common origin for both. The petiole has an epidermis with ornamented cuticle; the cortex is composed of collenchyma and parenchyma, and the vascular tissues are arranged in collateral bundles. The leaf blade is amphistomatic with non-glandular and glandular trichomes, and the mesophyll is dorsiventral. The identification of the idioblasts as secretion site of the phenolic compounds, mucilage and terpenoids as being responsible for the potential activity of the plant is of fundamental importance for future bioprospecting research on this species.

O araçá-boi (Eugenia stipitata) é uma fruteira nativa com grande potencial agroindustrial. Suas sementes são intolerantes ao dessecamento e apresentam dormência, o que dificulta sua propagação. O objetivo do trabalho foi analisar as características de germinação das sementes de araçá-boi submetidas a diferentes tratamentos pré-germinativos: retirada parcial do tegumento, lixiviação e fracionamento. A germinação das sementes intactas e com retirada parcial do tegumento foi realizada em dois ambientes: casa de vegetação e viveiro telado com sombrite de 50%. Para a lixiviação, as sementes foram colocadas em balde e submetidas à lixiviação, em água corrente, por até 90 dias, com intervalos de 10 dias. O fracionamento das sementes foi realizado de acordo com a posição da zona meristemática de protrusão da raiz e parte aérea (fracionamento transversal e longitudinal). A retirada parcial do tegumento das sementes de araçá-boi diminui o tempo médio de germinação de 91 para 48 dias, com 100% de emergência. As sementes de araçá-boi mantidas submersas em água corrente por até 50 dias mantêm a viabilidade e o vigor. As frações de sementes que apresentam a protuberância meristemática formam plântulas normais, com as mesmas características de germinação das sementes intactas, porém os diferentes tipos de fracionamento não aceleraram nem uniformizaram a germinação das sementes.

Neste trabalho foi feita a anatomia do embrião e a fase inicial da germinação da semente de O. minor. Frutos maduros de cinco indivíduos foram despolpados e as sementes obtidas foram semeadas em canteiros contendo substrato areia em casa de vegetação com sombreamento a 50%. O acompanhamento da germinação foi feito através de coletas das diferentes fases do desenvolvimento. O estudo anatômico foi realizado conforme técnicas usuais de microscopia de luz. O embrião é capitado. O eixo embrionário localiza-se na região proximal em posição oblíqua ao eixo cotiledonar. O cotilédone é formado por tecido parenquimático, procambial e protodérmico. Os feixes vasculares ocorrem ao longo da zona periférica da região distal até ao eixo embrionário. Aos 14 dias é emitida a raiz primária. Aos 21 dias forma-se a primeira bainha cotiledonar e aos 35 dias a segunda bainha cotiledonar ocorrendo à emergência da plântula acima do substrato. A germinação é do tipo adjacente ligular. The anatomy of the embryo and the initial germination phase of O. minor seeds are examined here. Ripe fruits were collected from five individuals, the pulp removed, and the seeds sown in beds with sandy substrate in a greenhouse with 50% shade. Germination follow-up was made by collecting different stages of development. The anatomical study done according to usual techniques of light microscopy. The embryo is capitate and occupies a central position in the basal region of the seed. The embryogenic axis is located in the proximal region in a position that is oblique to the cotyledon axis. The cotyledon is formed by parenchymatous, procambial and protodermic tissue. The vascular bundles lie along the peripheral zone of the distal region to the embryogenicaxis. After 14 days, the primary rootemerges; after 21 days, the first cotyledon sheath and after 35 days, the second cotyledon sheath, and the seedling emerges above the substrate. Germination is of the ligule adjacent type.

Foram descritos o processo germinativo e o desenvolvimento plantular de Oenocarpus bacaba, com observações diárias e semanais para caracterização da germinação das sementes até a formação das plântulas. A germinação teve início após sete dias de semeadura, com o aparecimento do botão germinativo, e terminou aos 35 dias após a completa formação da primeira bainha. O desenvolvimento das plântulas completou-se aos 125 dias, com a emergência do primeiro eófilo e o esgotamento das reservas do haustório, apresentando limbo de coloração verde-escura e base arroxeada. O processo de obtenção de plântulas apresentado neste trabalho constitui indicador para que a referida espécie seja implantada em sistemas agroflorestais. The process of germination and the seedling development of O. bacaba were presented in this work. The germination follow-up was made through the collections of several phases of the development. The germination began after seven days of sowing, with the appearance of the button seedling and ended 35 days after the formation of the first full sheath. The seedling development was complete 125 days after the emergence of the first eophylls, and the depletion of the haustorial reserves, with dark green leaf blade and reddish base. The process of seedling achievement presented for O. bacaba indicates that this species should be implanted in agroforest systems.

São apresentados os dados anatômicos da epiderme dos segmentos foliares de Mauritia flexuosa L. f. (Arecaceae) em três fases do desenvolvimento. Os segmentos foliares foram analisados em toda a extensão do limbo. As células intercostais da epiderme das faces adaxial e abaxial evidenciam-se com paredes sinuosas, retangulares e orientadas longitudinalmente em relação ao eixo do segmento foliar com acentuada presença de corpos de sílica esférico-espinulosos. As células epidérmicas da região costal de ambas as faces apresentam paredes retas e variam entre curtas, longas e arredondadas. Os tricomas são simples, unicelulares, longos, com base mais alargada. Os segmentos foliares de M. flexuosa são anfiestomáticos com estômatos tetracíticos. Em secção transversal a epiderme foliar é uniestratificada com câmara subestomática ampla. Os resultados obtidos não demonstraram variações expressivas entre as três fases de desenvolvimento e os caracteres encontrados parecem ser comuns a outras palmeiras. Anatomic data on the epidermis leaf segments from Mauritia flexuosa L. f. (Arecaceae) are presented on three phases of development. Leaf segments were analyzed on the all extension of leaf. Both adaxial and abaxial epidermal cells stand out with sinuous walls, rectangular and longitudinally oriented to the foliar axis with the marked presence of spherical- spiny silica bodies. The back epidermal cells of both surfaces present straight walls and vary among short, long and round. Trichomes are unicellular, simple, long, with a wider base. Leaf segments from M. flexuosa are anphistomatic with tetracitic type stomats. In a cross-section the leaf skin is unistratified with a broad substimatic chamber. The findings obtained showed no significant variations among the three phases of development and the characters that were found appear to be common on other palm trees.

Species from the leguminosae family are used in Agroforestry Systems. Their successful implementation depends on basic information about the species that constitute each extract. Hymenaea intermedia var. adenotricha species from the leguminosae family with potential to be used in agroforestry in the Amazon region. The seeds were harvested from plants found in the natural forest of Petroleum Province Urucu Harbor. The studies were carried out under laboratory and nursery conditions at the Agrarian Sciences College of the Amazonas University. H. intermedia var. adenotricha seeds are eurispermic, the tegument showed stone consistency when dehydrated and soft consistency when hydrated. The seed tegument showed four cellular strata, the first layer was formed by thin cells organized in a palissade. The embryon axis was yellow green. The cotyledons were fleshy with a hidden radicle. The plumule is rudimentary. The seed germination is phanero-epigeal, showing curved body during its emergency. The seedling showed tap-root root system, the axial primary root was woody grooved and glabrous. The secondary roots were resinous, short, slightly ramified but interlaced and showed no nodules. The protophyll exhibited compound asymmetric leaflets which were slightly falcade and oblonge. The first metaphyll presented compound asymmetric leaflets with slightly falcade-oblonge shape.

Euterpe precatoria Mart. é uma palmeira amplamente distribuída na bacia Amazônica, em terra firme e em solos de várzea. Dos frutos obtém-se o "vinho do açaí" e do ápice caulinar o palmito, que fazem desta palmeira um importante recurso alimentar. Foi feita a descrição morfo-anatômica do embrião de Euterpe precatoria, durante o processo germinativo, possibilitando o entendimento do mesmo. As observações foram realizadas em microscopio óptico, a partir de cortes histológicos de secções longitudinais e transversais da semente em diversos estádios da germinação. O eixo embrionário é curvo. No início da germinação, forma-se externamente o botão cotiledonar contendo a futura planta. A radícula emerge primeiro, apresentando coifa bem desenvolvida, desenvolvendo-se mais rapidamente que a plúmula. O processo de formação das primeiras folhas é contínuo. À medida que o embrião se desenvolve, a região distal aumenta de tamanho, formando o haustório e ocupando o lugar do endosperma. Euterpe precatoria is a palm tree widespread in Amazon basin, in terra firme and várzea sites. The fruit is used for the production of Açaí wine, and the sten apex for the production of palm hearts (palmito), which are an important food source. Different stages of germinated açaí seed were studied in longitudinal and transversal sections, under a optical microscope. The embryonic axis is curved. In the early stages of germination, the integument is displaced, forming the cotyledonal bud and the future plant. The radicle emerges first, with a well developed root cap and develops faster than the plumula. The process of formation of the first leaves is continuous. As the embryo is developing, the distal region increases in size, forming the haustorium and occupying the place of the endosperm.

Euterpe precatoria Mart. é uma palmeira amplamente distribuída na bacia Amazônica, em terra firme e em solos de várzea. Dos frutos obtêm-se o "vinho do açaí" e do ápice caulinar o palmito, que fazem desta palmeira um importante recurso alimentar. Neste trabalho é feita a descrição morfológica do desenvolvimento plantular durante a germinação da semente, contribuindo para o entendimento do processo e fornecendo subsídios para produção de mudas. A germinação é do tipo adjacente ligulada. A raiz primária emerge primeiro e desenvolve-se mais rapidamente que a plúmula; posteriormente, aparecem as raízes secundárias e terciárias. Euterpe precatoria Mart. is a common palm tree in the Amazon basin, in the floodplains and in uplands. The fruits are used for juice and palm heart is obtained from the shoot apex, so that it is an important food source. In this paper a morphological description of the developing seedling during the germination process is presented as a contribution for the understanding of this process and as a basis for the development of more efficient techniques of planting material production. The germination is of the adjacent ligular type. The radicle emerges first and grows faster than the plumule, with secoundary and tertiary roots appearing later on.

Aldina heterophylla, Leguminosae: Papilionoideae, é uma espécie facilmente encontrada em diferentes campinas da Amazônia Central. Possui características morfológicas que revelam a sua interação com o ambiente, apresentando variação no seu porte nas diversas campinas sob distintas condições de solo, luz e temperatura. O presente estudo foi realizado com a intenção de conhecer o grau de escleromorfismo das folhas em condições ambientais diferentes. De folhas ao sol e à sombra coletadas em três campinas da Amazônia Central (campina aberta, campina alta e campina sombreada), foram feitos cortes histológicos e dissociação de epidermes, para a descrição anatômica das mesmas. De maneira geral, em todos os macroambientes a planta desenvolve estruturas escleromorfas. Sugere-se que Aldina heterophylla está melhor adaptada às condições ambientais da campina alta, visto que ali apresenta crescimento exuberante, em relação à campina aberta e à campina sombreada. Aldina heterophylla (Leguminosae: Papilionoideae) is a species commonly found in campinas (dwarf forest on white sand) in central Amazonia. Some of its morphological characters vary according to the enviroment. It varies in size in the various campinas under different conditions of soil, light and temperature. The present study was made with the intention of understanding the amount of seleromorphism in different environmental conditions. Leaves collected under sun and shade conditions in three central Amazonia campinas (“open”, “high” and “shaded” campina), were used for histological sections and epidermal preparations for anatomical description. In general, the plants showed seleromorphism in all the environments. It is suggested that Aldina heterophylla is better adapted to the environmental conditions of “high” campina, where it showed more exuberent growth, than in “open” or “shaded” campina.

Syagrus inajai (‘pupunharana’) is a native palm of Brazil, with phytogeographic prevalence in the Amazon region. A morpho-anatomical analysis was undertaken in order to gain a better knowledge on the embryonic development and germinative process of the S. inajai. Plant material was collected from the Campus of the Universidade Federal do Amazonas – UFAM, Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil, and processed using standard morphological and anatomical techniques. The development process of the embryo takes ~220 days, and is divided into four stages: proembryo, globular embryo, lateral cordiform and torpedo. The embryo is small, linear, and derived from the terminal cell of the proembryo, arising from mitotic divisions in the apical cell. The embryonic axis is straight, located in the proximal region, aligned parallel to the length of the embryo. The single cotyledon is formed by the ground meristem, procambium and protoderm. The procambium supplies the embryonic axis and the haustorium.

Foi feito um estudo anatômico da folha e casca de Manihot glazioviiMüller Arg., dando sequênciaa ao estudo de plantas laticíferas. Enfâse foi dada à distribuição de vasos laticíferos, mais freqüente sobretudo na casca e de onde é normalmente retirado o látex. Há grande semelhança estrutural entre esta espécie, Manihot caerulescensPohl e Hevea brasiliensisMüll Arg. Leaf and bark anatomy were studied in Manihot glaziovii Müll. Emphasis was given to determining the distribution of laticiferous vessels, which reach their greatest density in the live bark from which latex is extracted. This species is structurally very similar to Manihot caerulescens (studied earlier by the author) and to Hevea brasiliensis Müll. Arg.
