Masonry buildings of historical centres are usually organized within aggregates, whose structural performance against seismic actions is challenging to predict and constitutes still an open issue. The SERA—AIMS (Seismic Testing of Adjacent Interacting Masonry Structures) project was developed to provide additional experimental data by testing a half-scale, two-unit stone masonry aggregate subjected to two horizontal components of dynamic excitation. In this context, this paper investigates the reliability of the modelling approach and the assumptions adopted to generate a three-dimensional continuum finite element model. The work involves two stages, namely a blind pre-diction and a post-diction phase, and proposes a series of simulation analyses including a strategy to shorten the actual records and save computation costs. The study was performed to investigate the extent of uncertainty in modelling for such masonry aggregates in relation to the experimental outcomes. Pre-diction results were proven to be not accurate in terms of predicted displacements and damage patterns. The upgrades introduced for the post-diction analyses, including the calibration of the elastic modulus and the introduction of a non-linear interface between the two units, allowed to improve the outcomes, with reasonable results in terms of predicted base shear force, displacements along Y-direction and damage pattern for the non-linear stage. The overall approach showed to be appropriate for the structural analysis of existing masonry aggregates, but the accurate modelling of this type of structure remains challenging due to the high level of uncertainties.

The concept of vulnerability of the existing building stock is receiving increasing awareness and central importance in the scientific community working in earthquake risk mitigation. This assumes even more relevance when dealing with heritage structures located in relevant seismic hazard zones. This paper aims to identify and describe the earthquake-resistant features found in a unique masonry church in Ischia (Italy), and discuss their effectiveness on the impact of the post-seismic damage through the application of non-linear static analyses. The Santa Maria Maddalena Church represents one of the rare examples in which the technology of the Borbonic casa Baraccata (mixed timber−masonry construction), already well-known in the literature for its use in Italian seismic areas since the eighteenth century, is applied with the non-conventional combination of masonry and iron frames. The church was struck by the recent earthquake of 21 August 2017 with epicentre in Casamicciola Terme. The recorded post-seismic damage of the church evidenced non-relevant structural crack patterns, which are likely to be related to the efficacy of the construction system adopted.

Historic earthen structures are a significant portion of the built heritage worldwide and are associated with intangible building techniques, wide material availability and low-cost construction. Nonetheless, dueto their low mechanical properties and, often poor connections, historic earthen structures are susceptible to early structural damage, and even collapse in areas of high seismic hazard. Inaddition, the lack of maintenance can further reduce structural performance and durability. The Getty Conservation Institute (GCI)'s Seismic Retrofitting Project (SRP) aims to research, designand test low-tech retrofitting techniques, as well as to implement maintenance programs, enhancing the performance of historicearthen buildings in seismic areas where the most advanced equipment, structural skills and materials are not easily available. Results: Accounting for recommendations from national building codes, conservation principles and local practices, the complete design, assessment and implementation of strengthening for twoprototype buildings in Peru, involved in the SRP, are discussed; the Church of Kuno Tambo and Ica Cathedral. The Cathedral of Ica, Peru, is one of the four prototype buildings involved in the ongoing Seismic Retrofitting Project, initiative of the Getty Conservation Institute. The complex historical building, which was heavily damaged by earthquakes in 2007 and 2009, can be divided into two substructures: an external masonry envelope and an internal timber frame built by a construction method known as quincha technique. This study makes use of the information available in literature and the results obtained from experimental campaigns performed by Pontificia Universidad Catlica del PerA and University of Minho. Nonlinear behaviour of masonry is simulated in the numerical models by considering specified compressive and tensile softening behaviour, while isotropic homogeneous and linear behaviour is adopted for modelling timber with appropriate assumptions on the connections. A single representative bay was initially studied by performing linear elastic analysis and verifying the compliance with the various criteria specified by the applicable normative to discuss the actual failure of Ica Cathedral. Afterwards, the structural behaviour of the two substructures composing the Cathedral is evaluated independently. Finally, the interaction of these two substructures is investigated by performing structural analysis on the entire structure of Ica Cathedral. Several structural analysis techniques, including eigenvalue, nonlinear static and dynamic analyses, are performed in order to: (1) evaluate the dominant mode shapes of the structure; (2) validate the numerical models by reproducing the structural damage observed in situ; (3) estimate the structural performance; and (4) identify the main failure mechanisms., This work was carried out with funding from the Getty Seismic Retrofitting Project under the auspices of the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI). Timber frame structures constitute an important cultural heritage of many countries, since they represent a typical anti-seismic construction adopted worldwide and are worth preserving. Recent experimental results have shown that the seismic response of traditional timber frame walls varies greatly with the type of infill, the type of connection and wall geometry. Two simplified 2D numerical models were created and in-plane monotonic tests were simulated and calibrated using recent experimental results. Material non-linearity was considered for all materials. Considering the numerous advantages of the use of simplified models, parametric analyses were carried out in order to evaluate the influence of parameters such as type of infill, infill-frame connectivity, timber type, connection type. The greater influence on the behaviour of the walls is given by the quality of the joints as well as the connectivity between timber and masonry, behaviour that is in accordance with experimental results. Additionally, the geometry of the wall influences its stiffness and load capacity.
