Lupus nephritis (LN) is most frequently associated with poor outcomes in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). LN manifests as histopathological changes in the kidney caused by immune complex formation and deposition. In particular, immunoglobulin G (IgG) deposits are frequently observed by immunofluorescence staining, which helps to establish the diagnosis of LN. In this case report, we describe a 57-year-old woman with SLE who had been undergoing treatment on an outpatient basis for 11 years. Her first and second renal biopsies revealed class V LN with a coarsely granular pattern of IgG deposition in the peripheral capillary walls. However, her third renal biopsy showed no IgG deposition, which indicated histopathological resolution of her class V LN. We used low-vacuum scanning electron microscopy (LV-SEM) to examine the three-dimensional structural alterations in her glomerular basement membranes. In this report, we describe findings that indicated resorption of epithelial deposits, that is, resolution of LN. The results of repeated kidney biopsies confirmed by LV-SEM suggested the possibility of a state unrelated to LN.

Metallic Zn nanowires have been synthesized by a new carbothermal reduction route in which ZnO and Eucalyptus sp. tar pitch were used as source materials. This simple practical procedure was capable of producing Zn nanowires in large quantities without reoxidation. This process was carried out in inert atmosphere, without vacuum or catalyst, at temperatures (800–900 °C) lower than those required in the carbothermal reduction of ZnO with graphite. A comparative study was performed using graphite that is traditionally used as a ZnO reducer, under the same experimental conditions, however, no reaction was observed. The new process involves the pyrolysis of biopitch to obtain a highly reactive coke and the reduction of ZnO with the release of Zn (v) for the growth of Zn (s) nanowires. The resulting Zn nanowires were characterized by X-ray diffractometry, energy-dispersive spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Differential thermal analysis and thermogravimetric analysis coupled with infrared analysis techniques were used in an effort to understand the underlying mechanism and establish the best ratio biopitch/ZnO to be used. This paper presents the characterization of the as-synthesized nanowires and discusses the main reactions involved in their production.

Nevirapine (C15H14N4O) is a lipophilic drug of low aqueous solubility used in AIDS treatment. Three different crystal forms of this non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor were obtained after recrystallization procedures. Physical characterization was evaluated with DSC, TG, IR spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction methods. Two new pseudopolymorphs have been characterized: nevirapine hemihydrate and nevirapine hemiethyl acetate. The pseudopolymorph identified as the hemiethyl acetate is disordered. It is converted to the hemihydrate form at room temperature. The crystal structures of the hemihydrate and hemiethyl acetate forms have been determined. The hemihydrate crystallizes in space group P21/n, while the ethyl acetate form is in space group P1. Polymorphs and pseudopolymorphs of a drug may exhibit different chemical and physical properties, which can affect dissolution, besides manufacturing, stability, and bioavailability. This work presents a comparative study of dihydrated and anhydrous forms of potassium croconate crystals by vibrational spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and thermogravimetry. These compounds have different colors (dihydrated is orange, and dehydrated is yellow) due to the presence of coordinated water molecules. X-ray diffraction patterns show that the unit cell of the yellow compound is smaller than that of the orange analogue, suggesting that the croconate ion layers are more closely bonded in this salt. The loss of water is reversible due to the potassium cation size which is intermediate between small (Li+ and Na+) and large (Rb+ and Cs+) alkaline metal ions. However, the hydrated compound (orange) is more stable, and with a small quantity of water the yellow compound is quickly converted to the orange compound. A diagnostic feature of the Raman spectrum for the orange (hydrated) and yellow (anhydrous) analogues is the singlet at 1240 cm(-1) in the former, assigned to a nu(CC) + delta(CCC) + nu(CO) + beta(CO) mode of E'2 symmetry, which splits in the yellow form to a doublet at 1256 and 1232 cm(-1).

Aims: The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the influence of different light curing units on the conversion of four composite resins with different compositions (Durafill VS® - Heraeus-Kulzer, Tetric Ceram® - Ivoclar/Vivadent, Filtek™ Supreme XT - 3M ESPE™ e Aelite™ LS Packable - Bisco), using differential scanning calorimetry. Materials and Methods: A stainless steel matrix was used to prepare 48 cylindrical composite test samples (n=6), measuring 3 mm in diameter and 1 mm in thickness. The samples were photoactivated using a halogen lamp (Optilux™ 500 - Demetron/Kerr) and three different generations of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) (LEC-470 I - MMOptics, Radii Plus - SDI and Ultra-Lume™ LED 5 - Ultradent). After removal of the matrix, each sample was weighed and hermetically sealed in an aluminum pan and analyzed. The amount of heat liberated by thermopolymerisation of residual monomers after photoactivation was measured in Joules/gram (J/g). The data were submitted to Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test (P ≤ 0.002) and the Tukey test (P < 0.05). Results: The Ultra-Lume™ LED 5 was superior on degree of conversion for all resins. The Radii Plus was equal to the Ultra-Lume™ LED 5, except for the resin Tetric Ceram® , were the Optilux™ 500 was superior. The LEC-470 I was inferior for the conversion of all resins. Conclusion: The study proves the importance of the compatibility of the different photoinitiators in resin composites with the different light sources.
