In examining the development of the International Geographical Union’s (IGU) Commission on Gender and Geography over the last three decades, we first highlight the advances made to establish visibility for gender studies within the IGU and create structures for more inclusive feminist geographies across national, disciplinary and other borders. Given that many of the early and most widely-known advances were largely within Anglophone contexts, we then discuss the ongoing challenges and possibilities for advancement faced by feminist geographers who teach, research, and write on gender in other locations. While some of these challenges (such as a continued lack of recognition for gender studies, paternalistic hierarchies, and specific government regimes) are country-specific, others are related to broader issues of neoliberalism and corporatization, and inequities in academic publishing. S’ha complert mig segle d’ensenyament de la geografia a la UAB (de 1969 a 2019). Al present article se n’hi expliquen els primers vint anys, fins a completar el desenvolupament de la Llei de reforma universitària (LRU) a la nostra universitat, i s’hi dona a conèixer quin era l’equip acadèmic que va acompanyar Enric Lluch (1928-2012) en aquesta experiència. S’hi introdueix la geografia que recollia els enfocaments innovadors que arribaven principalment de França, dels països anglosaxons i d’Itàlia. També s’hi detallen els plans d’estudi en què es basava la impartició de la geografia a la Facultat de Filosofia i Lletres, els seminaris formatius i les primeres recerques. El relat s’ha iniciat amb les experiències personals i acadèmiques de dues professores i un professor que varen formar part de l’equip inicial, per després comentar els principals trets del Departament, des de la governança fins a la consolidació de la geografia a la UAB com una disciplina acadèmica i com una forma d’entendre la societat i el territori. Constitueix una oportunitat per poder explicar l’etapa fundacional com un període històric significatiu per al desenvolupament posterior del Departament de Geografia., Se ha cumplido medio siglo de enseñanza de la geografía en la UAB (de 1969 a 2019). On a introduit la géographie qui a rassemblé les approches novatrices venues principalement de la France, des pays anglo-saxons et de l’Italie. C’est l’occasion d’expliquer le stade fondamental comme une période historique importante pour le développement ultérieur du Département de Géographie., Geography has been taught at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) for 50 years (1969-2019). This paper explores the first 20 years of geography until the entry into force of the University Reform Law (LRU) at the UAB and the academic team that accompanied Enric Lluch (1928-2012) in this experience. The introduction of geography based on innovative approaches coming mainly from France, English-speaking countries and Italy is discussed. The programs of study in which geography is taught at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters, the training seminars and the first investigations are also described. The story begins with the personal and academic experiences of two female teachers and a male teacher who formed part of the initial team, and then focuses on the main features of the department, from governance to the consolidation of geography at the UAB as an academic discipline and as a way of understanding society and the territory. It is an opportunity to explain the foundational stage as a significant historical period for the subsequent creation of the Geography Department at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

In some regions of Spain, well-educated women decide to move to the countryside to carry out their professional activities. This is a new phenomenon after many decades of female outmigration that also occurs in other European regions. Our aim is to explore how these professional women who decide to live in the countryside manage their work–life balance in this changing space. Our hypothesis is that these women, with high level of education and urban experience are more aware of gender inequality, have greater bargaining power, and therefore, achieve better work–life conciliation with their male partners. Research has been conducted through 60 in-depth interviews with women that have been analyzed through discourse analysis. The results show a complex situation. ResumenLos libros y las narrativas de viaje suponen un rico material para la comprensión de la apropiación intelectual que Europa hizo del “Oriente” en tanto que parte integrante y, a la vez, producto del vasto proceso conocido como colonialismo en el que la geografía estuvo tan profundamente involucrada. En particular, quiero rescatar del olvido las narrativas escritas por viajeras y exploradoras y que también están en la base de la formación de nuestra disciplina. Este texto se divide en tres partes: la primera revisa la recepción crítica de los planteamientos de Edward Said sobre el Orientalismo y la Otredad. La segunda parte se centra en dos viajeras europeas en el mundo árabe a principios del siglo xx, Gertrude Bell e Isabelle Eberhardt. La selección se debe a que una y otra encarnan maneras muy diferentes de enfrentarse a la Otredad con mayúsculas que el mundo del Islam suponía para la Europa de su tiempo. Al final esbozo unas conclusiones comparativas y hago unas reflexiones finales sobre los dos casos presentados.AbstractTravel books and narratives constitute a rich source for the understanding of Europe's intellectual appropriation of the Orient, as both an integral part and the result of the vast process known as colonialism in which geography was so deeply involved. In particular, I wish to recover the narratives of female travelers and explorers, who also constitute the basis of the training in our discipline. This text is divided into three sections: the first reviews the critical reception of Edward Said's views on Orientalism and “Otherness”. The second focuses on two female European travelers in the Arab world at the beginning of the 20th century, Gertrude Bell and Isabelle Eberhardt. These two women were selected since they embody very different ways of coping with the Otherness that the world of Islam represented for Europe at the time.

Abstract Within the context of the new ruralities reshaped by globalization processes, some educated women decide to stay at the countryside, where they develop their own life projects. It is a relatively new phenomenon, taking into account the steady process of female migration from rural areas that has taken place in Spain for decades. Through in­depth interviews we attempt to set out how rural women perceive themselves and assess rurality in two Spanish regions, Catalonia and Galicia. Since the introduction of gender themes into university teaching in geography in Spain in 1989, significant gains have been made but challenges remain in relation to placing gender into undergraduate curricula and developing teaching resources in local languages. Geographers in Spain have to meet those challenges in the near future in order to fully integrate gender geography into the curricula.

The main goal of the paper is to study Jan Monk's contribution to the development of international gender geography, in particular in Spain. Our aim is also to explain the experiences and numerous connections among places, people and ideas that she has been weaving to foster international scholarship and, in this way, how she has challenged hegemonic approaches in feminist geography. Jan Monk comes originally from the Southern hemisphere and therefore she is well aware of the extent to which ‘Northern’ (or Anglo-American) ways of seeing the world define concepts, theories and ideas in geography (and also in feminist geography). Being an ‘insider’ and an ‘outsider’ as well as her sensibility to the important of place has permeated Jan's contribution to international gender geography.

En el marco de un espacio rural, mujeres formadas inician proyectos profesionales. Su iniciativa es importante no solamente por las prácticas que desarrollan y por sus efectos en el territorio sino también porque consiguen la permanencia de un colectivo social especialmente amenazado desde hace décadas. Los proyectos desarrollados muestran ideas, conocimientos, información, estrategia, alta capacidad de organización y de trabajo y red de relaciones. Para ello, la formación recibida es un recurso fundamental. Sus conocimientos las empoderan como mujeres profesionales y les permite superar barreras de género y de clase. Their initiative is important not only for the practices they develop and for the effects they generate in the area but also because they achieve the permanence of a particular social group that has been threatened since decades. Their projects show ideas, knowledge, information, strategy, organizational skills, high work capacity and social networks. In their ability to initiate professional projects, education and training become crucial resources. Their knowledge empowers them as professional women and enables them to overcome barriers of gender and class. This editorial is seen as a comment on the on-going concern expressed in several Anglophone geography journals about the hegemony of Angloamerican production and its role in formulating the terms of international academic debate. We examine the extent to which Angloamerican dominance is equally true with regard to feminist geography, by looking at how/whether Gender, Place and Culture (GPC) deals with this bias. Le début de l'expérience coloniale espagnole en Afrique du Nord a été l'occasion pour la géographie de faire entendre sa voix au moyen de la création d'institutions et la réalisation de travaux scientifiques qui visaient à faire connaître l'importance de la présence au Maroc à une population traumatisée par la perte récente de ce qui restait d'un empire colonial jadis étendu. Les avatars de l'implantation du Protectorat espagnol ont retardé la mise en place d'une véritable politique colonisatrice qui n'a été possible qu'après la Guerre civile. L'africanisme des militaires, dont le général Franco, explique que, dans les années 1940, apparaissent des projets d'aménagement du territoire qui auront un caractère pionnier dans l'Espagne de l'après-guerre mais resteront tout d'abord une « vitrine » de la propagande du nouveau régime. Mais, à ce moment-là, la géographie espagnole s'est montrée incapable de participer à cette expérience à cause de son retard institutionnel et académique et le domaine de l'aménagement du territoire restera pour quelques années dans les mains d'autres professionnels qui, eux, avaient les connaissances qui manquaient aux géographes., Spain's colonial experience in Northern Africa gave at first an opportunity for geographers to assert their public presence through ad hoc institutions and research. The ultimate objective was to gain support for the colonization of Morocco from a population that still was under the impact of the recent loss of the remnants of a once huge colonial empire. The vicissitudes of the establishment of the Spanish Protectorate delayed the implementation of a real colonization policy until the end of the Spanish civil war. The "africanism" of the military officers, General Franco among them, explains that several projects of regional planning appeared during the 1940s. Such projects show the contradictions of the regional planning policy of the government but nevertheless they were pioneering undertakings in post-war Spain as they were intended to be a propaganda show-case for the military regime. Then, however, Spanish geography missed this opportunity due to the late institutionalization of the discipline and, therefore, regional planning remained for several decades the domain of other professionals with the required technical training.

At the time of the European Union’s eastern enlargement, some personal reflections are given about the need to keep alive diversity and difference in geography. Nowadays there is almost undisputed hegemony of one single geography and scholarly tradition - that of Anglo-American geography. Increasingly, it sets the guidelines and the agenda for intellectual debate (in Europe as well as in many parts of the world), and discourages other traditions from entering international academic debates and reaching wider audiences. At the moment when the European Union is enlarging with 10 new countries, we should be aware of our potential strength and take advantage of this opportunity to enhance cross-fertilization, thereby enriching our discipline.

Cet article présente les résultats d’une recherche dont les objectifs étaient de connaître l’emploi, la gestion et la perception du temps quotidien des femmes « adultes » de Barcelone et de comparer ce temps quotidien avec les temps offerts par la ville. L’utilisation d’une méthodologie qui combine les approches qualitative et quantitative a permis de dégager cinq axes thématiques : la perception et l’expérimentation de la journée quotidienne, le temps de travail, productif ou professionnel, le temps de travail reproductif ou domestique et de soin à la famille, le temps personnel et finalement l’opinion et la perception par rapport aux temps et aux horaires de la ville This article summarizes the result of a research with the following objectives : knowing the daily time use, management and perception by adult women in the city of Barcelona and comparing the daily time with the times offered by the city itself. The use of a combinated methodology , both qualitative and quantitative, has allowed researchers to develop five thematic axes : perception and experience of daily time, working time, caring time and personal time and finally the opinion and perception about the city’s time schedule.

The article analyses the use of the Via Julia, public space in Barcelona that is an outstanding example of participatory urban planning in a peripheral working class district from the early 1980s. The research is based on fieldwork carried out in 2000 in order to assess the use and appropriation of this space by the residents of the district. It emerges that there is an intense and almost egalitarian use of this space by men and women of different age groups and a great diversity of activities taking place there. This case of successful remodeling is related to a particular social and political conjuncture in Spain in which urban planners had to negotiate their original plan with very strong social urban movements, in which women played a conspicuous role.

In the mid‐1980s Spanish geography seemed to be a success story in relation to gender and geography (Garcia‐Ramon et al., 1988). But in recent years this positive aspect has been less marked, at least in Catalan geography. The total percentage of women staff has remained quite steady but the male:female ratio has significantly increased among younger age groups. Gender approaches to teaching and research in geography are still available in only a minority of departments in Spain. Contrary to the growing number of women geography staff in the English‐speaking world, the image of geography in Spain today is more masculine than before, probably due to the fact that geography has moved from a more traditional to a more technical focus linked to the growth of professional practice outside the university.

This article deals with women's use of public space and sense of place in El Raval, a neighbourhood located in the historical center of Barcelona. Attention will be paid to discover to what degree the existence of a quality public space fosters the creation of socially meaningful places, thus contributing to the construction of womens sense of place and urban identities. A qualitative approach, based on direct observation and in-depth interviews with women living in the neighbourhood, has allowed us to capture the main aspects of the building of a sense of place and belonging, that is the use of public space and facilities, the attitude towards living in the neighbourhood, etc.

The recent process of globalization of the economy has revived the debate on types of work contracts throughout Europe, and flexible employment has been strongly advocated as a solution to problems like persistent unemployment and decreasing competitiveness. Spain has experienced a recent political development rather different from that of the European core, which has shaped a peculiar form of labour market regulation and which has led to the country's indisputable and undesirable leadership in Europe in terms of the proportion of short-term contracts. This article addresses some basic issues of the 'flexibilization' of labour relations in the Spanish context, with particular emphasis on the retail sector in Barcelona.

The main goal of this essay is to study a book- El Marroc sensual i fanatic - of travel writings written by a Catalan woman traveller, and to put it within the context of the recent scholarship that relates, on the one hand, travel narrative with Orientalism and gender and, on the other, geography and colonialism. The contradictory nature of the contents of the book leads us to challenge the notion of simple 'Othering' as presented in Said's works where the heterogeneity of colonial power is neglected in a totalising dichotomy between the colonising Self and the colonising Other. The contemporary Spanish official discourse was indeed pro-colonial and paternalistic and often drew on notions of shared history and geographical proximity in order to legitimise an 'altruistic' colonial presence. Gender geography is now widely present on the agenda of international geography. In this paper we analyse its evolution through a bibliometric analysis of the articles and book reviews on gender published in 71 journals from 23 different countries, paying attention to the sex of the authors. We also make a thematic classification of the articles, taking into account the different languages and regions in which the journals are published. It is clear that gender geography from English speaking countries has played a very important role in the initial development of gender geography in other regional contexts, but, in spite of common origins and continuing strong influences, somehow different regional models of gender geography are emerging. We advocate the value of making greater efforts to integrate the work being done outside English speaking academia into the general surveys of gender geography.

An increasing internationalization of economic activities in recent decades has led to relocation and restructuring of work processes in many parts of the world and in different sectors of the economy in labour-intensive industries. The search for greater flexibility in the labour market has enhanced the importance of 'atypical' work often falling within the so-called 'informal economy', in which female labour is prominent but can scarcely be traced in statistical records. A clear example of this restructuring in Southern Europe is industrial homeworking, which is carried out mainly by women within the context of the underground economy. In this article we try to shed light on the nature and function of women's industrial homeworking in different rural areas of Spain Catalonia, Valencia, Andalusia and Galicia - where economic restructuring has been particularly strong. While the type of work and the way home working is combined with other activities to boost household incomes varies between the regions, many of the women interviewees report similar experiences of homeworking, both positive and negative. In each case-study, however, it is clear that the choice to engage in homeworking is highly constrained. It is shaped by the restrictions deriving from gender roles and relations within the family and by the regional context.

The use and appropriation of public spaces is one of the fundamental aspects to be taken into account in research on the daily lives of the men and women who live in cities. This experience is not the same for everybody since factors such as sex, age, social class and ethnic and cultural identity affect the way in which urban life is experienced and perceived. We define public spaces as places of interrelation, social encounter and exchange, where groups with different interests converge (Borja & Muxi, 2001). Where they are used by a great diversity of people and for a wide variety of activities, public spaces can contribute to the collective identity of the community (Valle, 1997; Franck & Paxson, 1989). They have the capacity to become “participatory landscapes”, core elements in urban life that reflect our culture, beliefs and values (Francis, 1989).

Hace tan sólo quince años que publiqué un artículo en España en el que yo misma abogaba por la necesidad de no excluir del estudio a la mitad del género humano, y argumentaba que la introducción del enfoque de género era una tarea ineludible en geografía huinana. Actualmente se podría asegurar que la consolidación de los estudios de género en la geografía internacional es un hecho muy destacable aunque se observe grandes diferencias de ritmo en este proceso según los diferentes países y regiones del mundo. En primer lugar, en este artículo quiero hacer un balance del desarrollo de las nuevas tendencias a nivel internacional desde la década de los años 1990's y, en segundo lugar, quiero hacer un balance de la producción científica en esta temática en España desde la introducción del enfoque. In an article signed by myself just fifteen years ago I was advocating the need of not excluding from our research in human geography half of the humankind, thereby arguing that the introduction of the gender approach was an unavoidable task. Nowdays it could be asserted that gender studies have been fully integrated in international Geography althoug at very different rates in different regions of the world. The present article tries to present first, the recent developments and new trends at the internacional level since the 1990's and, second, to present a survey of the scietific procduction on the field in Spain since the gender approached was introduced.

El inicio de la experiencia colonial española en África del Norte supuso para la geografía la ocasión de hacerse oír por medio de la creación de instituciones y de la realización de trabajos científicos encaminados a dar a conocer la importancia de la presencia en Marruecos a una población traumatizada por la pérdida reciente de lo que quedaba de un imperio colonial antaño extenso. Los avatares de la implantación del Protectorado español retrasaron la implantación de una verdadera política colonizadora, que no fue posible hasta después de la Guerra Civil. El africanismo de los militares, entre ellos el General Franco, explica que durante la década de los 40 surgieran proyectos de ordenación del territorio que tuvieron un carácter pionero en la España de la posguerra, pero que fueron, ante todo, una vitrina de propaganda del nuevo régimen. Pero en aquella época la geografía española se mostró incapaz de participar en esta experiencia a causa de su retraso institucional y académico, y el dominio de la ordenación del territorio quedó en manos de otros profesionales que poseían los conocimientos que les faltaban a los geógrafos.

Avui, potser més que mai a la història de la nostra disciplina, s’observa una indisputada hegemonia internacional d’una única geografia, l’angloamericana. Aquesta estableix les pautes del debat intel·lectual que té lloc a diverses parts del món, en gran part a causa de l’hegemonia de l’anglès. Però aquesta preponderància lingüística és una forma de poder que, mentre dignifica certes tradicions acadèmiques, en desautoritza unes altres. En aquest article em referiré, en primer lloc, a la situació de la geografia internacional una dècada després d’un cert debat sobre el tema en els fòrums internacionals de geografia crítica i, en segon lloc, al cas de la geografia feminista, que no és cap excepció en aquest procés., Today, perhaps more than ever in the history of our discipline, there is an undisputed international hegemony of a single geography: the Anglo-American.
