This study aims to identify the figurative and symbolic meanings of Giuseppe Vaccaro’s plans for the churches of San Gregorio Barbarigo in the EUR neighbourhood (1970-1972) and of Santi Martiri dell’Uganda in the Poggio Ameno district (1975-1982), in Rome. These particular values may be recognized in the configuration of the layout, in the structural types and construction techniques used, and in how the two buildings’ materials were worked and put in place. These qualities must be preserved, because they define the current image of the works, and because they bear witness to the creativity of their architect. The reconstruction of the two churches’ creative and building process, and an understanding the compositional language used by Vaccaro (and the other professionals taking part in the work site) are an indispensable prerequisite for gaining knowledge of twentieth-century architecture and for defining effective operative strategies for protecting its spatiality, understood as the “place of image”.

This issue includes the first version of the international Conference on Utopian & Sacred Architecture Studies (USAS) was held from 11 -13 June 2019 in association with Universita degli Studi della Campania Luigi Vanvitelli. The conference included many discussions that covered extremely important topics and presented theories and practices stimulated over the last five centuries in a wide range of scientific areas such as historiography, political science as well as literary and art studies. Background: Previous studies have reported the association between type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Aims: To explore the relationships among DM2, antidiabetic therapy and HCC risk. Methods: We recruited 610 HCC patients compared with 618 matched cirrhotic patients and 1696 Controls. The odds ratio (OR) for HCC in diabetic subjects treated with insulin, sulphonylureas and metformin was calculated. Results: DM2 prevalence was 31.2% in HCC, 23.3% in cirrhotic patients and 12.7% in Controls (P

L’attività qui presentata, che ha coinvolto ricercatori di settori disciplinari diversi - del rilievo e rappresentazione, dell’archeologia e del restauro - è quello di predisporre uno strumento di rilievo e di documentazione agile, preciso e facilmente implementabile nel tempo, che consenta la descrizione grafica e materica dei manufatti architettonici, del loro palinsesto di stratificazioni e dello stato di conservazione, al fine di ricostruire le fasi di crescita e di trasformazione, e di individuare i criteri di restauro. Il caso di studio è quello di un tratto delle Mura Aureliane lungo circa cento metri lineari presso Porta Latina che comprende, oltre alla porta stessa, le due torri semicircolari e la prima torre a pianta quadrangolare ad est verso Porta Metronia. Il lavoro è stato strutturato a partire da una campagna di rilevamento tradizionale integrato con il laser scanner 3D che ha consentito di realizzare un modello tridimensionale collegato ad una banca dati sviluppata in ambiente GIS. Le indagini sulla consistenza attuale sono state confrontate con la documentazione storica, sia grafica che descrittiva, consentendo di chiarire alcuni aspetti della storia costruttiva del monumento. The project presented here, which involved researchers from different disciplines -architecture and graphic documentation, archaeology and restoration - is to prepare a quick, accurate and easy to implementable in time, tool for surveying and documentation, which allows the graphic description of the material and architectural artifacts, of their palimpsest stratification and the state of preservation, in order to reconstruct the phases of growth and transformation, and to identify the criterion of restoration. The current study concerns Porta Latina and the roughly 100 metros of wall between towers J19 and J20. This gate is one of the best conserved of the original Aurelian walls. The gate is flanked by two semi-circular towers, one of which is constructed on a massive rectangular base in stone, to the east of Porta Metronia. The project began with an analysis and documentation campaign integrating direct, traditional recording methods with indirect, topographic instrument and 3D laser scanning recording. These recording systems permitted development of a geographic information system based on three-dimensional modeling of separate, individual elements, linked to a database and related to the various stratigraphic horizons, the construction techniques, the component materials and their state of degradation. The investigations of the extant wall fabric were further compared to historic documentation, from both graphic and descriptive sources.

Questo articolo presenta i primi risultati di un lavoro sul fenomeno dell’incastellamento nell’area dei Monti Lucretili, zona situata nella Sabina Romana e tutelata dall’omonimo Parco Naturale Regionale. L’incastellamento ha influenzato notevolmente l’assetto insediativo della Campagna Romana, con la creazione di villaggi fortificati d’altura collocati in posizioni strategiche. In questo articolo verranno analizzati quattro dei castelli abbandonati dei Monti Lucretili, spiegando la loro struttura e gli elementi caratterizzanti. This article presents the first results of a research concerning the phenomenon of incastellamento in the Monti Lucretili area, located in Roman Sabina and protected by the homonymous Regional Natural Park. Fortification building has greatly influenced settlement structure in the Roman countryside with the creation of fortified villages situated in strategically high vantage points. This section will analyze four of these abandoned settlements, explaining their structural development and the elements that characterize them.
