Transport models are the main method to obtain physics information from low to relativistic-energy heavy-ion collisions. The Transport Model Evaluation Project (TMEP) has been pursued to test the robustness of transport model predictions in reaching consistent conclusions from the same type of physical model. Calculations under controlled conditions of physical input and set-up were performed with various participating codes. These included both calculations of nuclear matter in a box with periodic boundary conditions, and more realistic calculations of heavy-ion collisions. In this intermediate review, we summarize and discuss the present status of the project. We also provide condensed descriptions of the 26 participating codes, which contributed to some part of the project. These include the major codes in use today. We review the main results of the studies completed so far. They show, that in box calculations the differences between the codes can be well understood and a convergence of the results can be reached. These studies also highlight the systematic differences between the two families of transport codes, known as BUU and QMD type codes. However, when the codes were compared in full heavy-ion collisions using different physical models, as recently for pion production, they still yielded substantially different results. This calls for further comparisons of heavy-ion collisions with controlled models and of box comparisons of important ingredients, like momentum-dependent fields, which are currently underway. We often indicate improved strategies in performing transport simulations and thus provide guidance to code developers. Results of transport simulations of heavy-ion collisions from a given code will have more significance if the code can be validated against benchmark calculations such as the ones summarized in this review., 114 pages, 14 figures, 479 references, accepted for publication in Progress of Particle and Nuclear Phsics

Within the transport model evaluation project (TMEP) of simulations for heavy-ion collisions, the mean-field response is examined here. Specifically, zero-sound propagation is considered for neutron-proton symmetric matter enclosed in a periodic box, at zero temperature and around normal density. The results of several transport codes belonging to two families (BUU-like and QMD-like) are compared among each other and to exact calculations. For BUU-like codes, employing the test particle method, the results depend on the combination of the number of test particles and the spread of the profile functions that weight integration over space. These parameters can be properly adapted to give a good reproduction of the analytical zero-sound features. QMD-like codes, using molecular dynamics methods, are characterized by large damping effects, attributable to the fluctuations inherent in their phase-space representation. Moreover, for a given nuclear effective interaction, they generally lead to slower density oscillations, as compared to BUU-like codes. The latter problem is mitigated in the more recent lattice formulation of some of the QMD codes. The significance of these results for the description of real heavy-ion collisions is discussed.

Purpose Monte Carlo (MC) simulations are widely used for medical applications and nuclear reaction models are fundamental for the simulation of the particle interactions with patients in ion therapy. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to have reliable models in MC simulations for such interactions. Geant4 is one of the most used toolkits for MC simulation. However, its models showed severe limitations in reproducing the yields measured in the interaction of ion beams below 100 MeV/u with thin targets. For this reason, we interfaced two models, SMF (“Stochastic Mean Field”) and BLOB (“Boltzmann-Langevin One Body”), dedicated to simulate such reactions, with Geant4. Methods Both SMF and BLOB are semi-classical, one-body approaches to solve the Boltzmann-Langevin equation. They include an identical treatment of the mean-field propagation, on the basis of the same effective interaction, but they differ in the way fluctuations are included. Furthermore, we tested a correction to the excitation energy calculated for the light fragments emerging from the simulations and a simple coalescence model. Results While both SMF and BLOB have been developed to simulate heavy ion interactions, they show very good results in reproducing the experimental yields of light fragments, up to alpha particles, obtained in the interaction of 12C with a thin carbon target at 62 MeV/u. Conclusions BLOB in particular gives promising results and this stresses the importance of integrating it into the Geant4 toolkit.

The theoretical approach to a sequential heavy ion double charge exchange reaction is presented. A brief introduction into the formal theory of second-order nuclear reactions and their application to Double Single Charge Exchange (DSCE) reactions by distorted wave theory is given, thereby completing the theoretical background to our recent work. Formally, the DSCE reaction amplitudes are shown to be separable into superpositions of distortion factors, accounting for initial and final state ion–ion interactions, and nuclear matrix elements. A broad space is given to the construction of nuclear DSCE response functions on the basis of polarization propagator theory. The nuclear response tensors resemble the nuclear matrix elements of 2νββ decay in structure but contain in general a considerable more complex multipole and spin structure. The QRPA theory is used to derive explicit expressions for nuclear matrix elements (NMEs). The differences between the NME of the first and the second interaction vertexes in a DSCE reaction is elucidated. Reduction schemes for the transition form factors are discussed by investigating the closure approximation and the momentum structure of form factors. DSCE unit strength cross sections are derived.

The40Ca(18O,18F)40K single charge exchange (SCE) reaction is explored at an incident energy of 275 MeV and analyzed consistently by collecting the elastic scattering and inelastic scattering data under the same experimental conditions. Full quantum-mechanical SCE calculations of the direct mechanism are performed by including microscopic nuclear structure inputs and adopting either a bare optical potential or a coupled channel equivalent polarization potential (CCEP) constrained by the elastic and inelastic data. The direct SCE mechanism describes the magnitude and shape of the angular distributions rather well, thus suggesting the suppression of sequential multi-nucleon transfer processes.

NUMEN proposes an innovative technique to access the nuclear matrix elements entering the expression of the lifetime of the double beta decay by cross-section measurements of heavy-ion induced Double Charge Exchange (DCE) reactions. Despite the fact that the two processes, namely neutrinoless double beta decay and DCE reactions, are triggered by the weak and strong interaction respectively, important analogies are suggested. The basic point is the coincidence of the initial and final state many-body wave functions in the two types of processes and the formal similarity of the transition operators. The main experimental tools for this project are the K800 Superconducting Cyclotron and MAGNEX spectrometer at the INFN-LNS laboratory. However, the tiny values of DCE cross-sections and the resolution requirements demand beam intensities much higher than those manageable with the present facility. The on-going upgrade of the INFN-LNS facilities promoted by the POTLNS a project in this perspective is intimately connected to the NUMEN project. This paper describes the solutions proposed as a result of the R&D activity performed during the recent years. Background: Heavy-ion induced two-nucleon transfer reactions are powerful tools to reveal peculiar aspects of the atomic nucleus, such as pairing correlations, single-particle and collective degrees of freedom, and more. Also, these processes are in competition with the direct meson exchange in the double charge exchange reactions, which have recently attracted great interest due to their possible connection to neutrinoless double-beta decay. In this framework, the exploration of two-nucleon transfer reactions in the 20Ne+116Cd collision at energies above the Coulomb barrier is particularly relevant since the 116Cd nucleus is a candidate for the double-beta decay. Methods: We measured the excitation energy spectra and absolute cross sections for the two reactions using the MAGNEX large acceptance magnetic spectrometer to detect the ejectiles. We performed direct coupled reaction channels and sequential distorted wave Born approximation calculations using the double folding S\~ao Paulo potential to model the initial and final state interactions. The spectroscopic amplitudes for two- and singleparticle transitions were derived by different nuclear structure approaches: microscopic large-scale shell model, interacting boson model-2 and quasiparticle random phase approximation. Results: The calculations are able to reproduce the experimental cross sections for both two-neutron and twoproton transfer reactions. The role of couplings with the inelastic channels are found to be important in the two-proton transfer case. A competition between the direct and the sequential process is found in the reaction mechanism. For the two-proton transfer case, the inclusion of the 1g7/2 and 2d5/2 orbitals in the model space is crucial.

Purpose: A reliable model to simulate nuclear interactions is fundamental for Ion-therapy. We already showed how BLOB ("Boltzmann-Langevin One Body"), a model developed to simulate heavy ion interactions up to few hundreds of MeV/u, could simulate also $^{12}$C reactions in the same energy domain. However, its computation time is too long for any medical application. For this reason we present the possibility of emulating it with a Deep Learning algorithm. Methods: The BLOB final state is a Probability Density Function (PDF) of finding a nucleon in a position of the phase space. We discretised this PDF and trained a Variational Auto-Encoder (VAE) to reproduce such a discrete PDF. As a proof of concept, we developed and trained a VAE to emulate BLOB in simulating the interactions of $^{12}$C with $^{12}$C at 62 MeV/u. To have more control on the generation, we forced the VAE latent space to be organised with respect to the impact parameter ($b$) training a classifier of $b$ jointly with the VAE. Results: The distributions obtained from the VAE are similar to the input ones and the computation time needed to use the VAE as a generator is negligible. Conclusions: We show that it is possible to use a Deep Learning approach to emulate a model developed to simulate nuclear reactions in the energy range of interest for Ion-therapy. Many studies have indicated that the response to therapy and the prognostic impact of a pathologic complete response after neoadjuvant treatment differ among breast cancer subtypes. The aim of our study is to evaluate the effect of this treatment on the expression of estrogen and progesterone receptors, human epidermal growth hormone receptor 2 and Ki67 in breast cancer. We identified 125 patients. The estrogen receptor modified its expression from positive to negative in 8% patients and from negative to positive in 22%; progesterone in 21% and in 37% cases. Median Ki-67 value was 20.9% at biopsy and 18% after, HER-2 status did not show a remarkable change before or after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT). We have identified a significant reduction in Ki-67 expression levels after chemotherapy in patients with a pathologic response. Detection of pretreatment Ki-67 could identify patients most likely to benefit from NACT. NACT can change the status of ER, PgR, and Ki-67 expression in patients with breast adenocarcinoma, but it did not exert a significant effect on HER-2 status; HER-2 amplification appears to be more stable. We have identified a prognostic role for a decreased expression of PgR and Ki-67 after preoperative chemotherapy in breast cancer patients.

Binary collisions of either stable or radioactive heavy ions at Fermi energies allow to study the nuclear reaction mechanisms under dynamical conditions of non-equilibrium and the formation of transient pieces of nuclear matter of very short mean life times at sub-normal density. An important role in the evolutionary phase of the collision is played by the gradient of the nuclear density affecting the isospin asymmetry of the reaction products by typical transport phenomena such as the isospin diffusion and drift. Experimental determination of the value of the nuclear matter density in the early phase of the collision is a crucial step towards understanding the underlying mechanism responsible for the production of clusters. In this paper a method for evaluating the nuclear density in semi-peripheral collisions in the reaction $$^{124}Sn + ^{64}Ni$$ at 35 MeV/nucleon as studied with the CHIMERA multi-particle detector is described.

We study the pre-equilibrium dipole response in the charge-asymmetric reaction $^{132}$Sn+$^{58}$Ni at $E_{lab}=10$ MeV/A, within a semi-classical transport model employing effective interactions for the nuclear mean-field. In particular, we adopt the recently introduced SAMi-J Skyrme interactions, whose parameters are specifically tuned to improve the description of spin-isospin properties of nuclei. Within the same framework, we also discuss pre-equilibrium nucleon emission. Our results show that both mechanisms, i.e., pre-equilibrium dipole oscillations and nucleon emission, are sensitive to the symmetry energy below the saturation density $\rho_0$ (in the range $0.6\rho_0-\rho_0$), to the effective mass and to the nucleon-nucleon cross section. Finally, a covariant analysis is applied to study the correlations between the model parameters and observables of experimental interest., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Background: Double charge exchange (DCE) nuclear reactions have recently attracted much interest as tools to provide experimentally driven information about nuclear matrix elements of interest in the context of neutrinoless double-β decay. In this framework, a good description of the reaction mechanism and a complete knowledge of the initial and final-state interactions are mandatory. Presently, not enough is known about the details of the optical potentials and nuclear response to isospin operators for many of the projectile-target systems proposed for future DCE studies. Among these, the Ne20+Ge76 DCE reaction is particularly relevant due to its connection with Ge76 double-β decay. Purpose: We intend to characterize the initial-state interaction for the Ne20+Ge76 reactions at 306 MeV bombarding energy and determine the optical potential and the role of the couplings between elastic channel and inelastic transitions to the first low-lying excited states. Methods: We determine the experimental elastic and inelastic scattering cross-section angular distributions, compare the theoretical predictions by adopting different models of optical potentials with the experimental data, and evaluate the coupling effect through the comparison of the distorted-wave Born approximation calculations with the coupled channels ones. Results: Optical models fail to describe the elastic angular distribution above the grazing angle (≈9.4∘). A correction in the geometry to effectively account for deformation of the involved nuclear systems improves the agreement up to about 14∘. Coupled channels effects are crucial to obtain good agreement at large angles in the elastic scattering cross section. Conclusions: The analysis of elastic and inelastic scattering data turned out to be a powerful tool to explore the initial and final-state interactions in heavy-ion nuclear reactions at high transferred momenta.

Main features of fragments produced in 58Ni+40Ca and 58Ni+48Ca systems at 25 AMeV, collected by Chimera multidetector at INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (Italy), are analysed in order to study properties of moderately excited systems (Ex=2-5 AMeV) formed in central collisions. By means of correlations between specific global variables, sensitive to the centrality of the collision, a stringent selection of Fusion-Evaporation residues, Multifragmentation sources and their decay products has been performed. The influence of the isospin contents of the systems on the reaction mechanism is carefully investigated and relevant observables such as isospin asymmetry N/Z or charge and mass of fragments, are discussed in order to probe the fragmentation path, characterised by short living ( ∼ 100fm/c) low density states of nuclear matter out of equilibrium. Preliminary comparisons with predictions of the BLOB model, in a semi-classical mean field framework, are presented, investigating cluster production emerging from the occurrence of low-density instabilities in central collisions.

An updated overview of recent results on Heavy-Ion induced reactions of interest for neutrinoless double beta decay is reported in the framework of the NUMEN project. The NUMEN idea is to study heavy-ion induced Double Charge Exchange (DCE) reactions with the aim to get information on the nuclear matrix elements for neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay. Moreover, to infer the neutrino average masses from the possible measurement of the half- life of 0νββ decay, the knowledge of the nuclear matrix elements is a crucial aspect. Uma visão geral atualizada dos resultados recentes sobre reações induzidas por íons pesados ​​de interesse para o decaimento beta duplo sem neutrinos é relatada na estrutura do projeto NUMEN. A ideia do NUMEN é estudar reações de Double Charge Exchange (DCE) induzidas por íons pesados ​​com o objetivo de obter informações sobre os elementos da matriz nuclear para o decaimento beta duplo sem neutrinos (0νββ). Theoretical studies are performed, providing a relation between heavy ion double charge exchange (DCE) cross section and \(\beta \beta \) strength, up to momentum transfers of 25–30 MeV. DCE reactions can be interpreted in terms of two correlated or uncorrelated single charge exchange processes, thus mimicking \(0\nu \beta \beta \) or \(2\nu \beta \beta \) decay, respectively. The dominance of the former mechanism would allow to gain information on \(0\nu \beta \beta \) strength, thus helping in improving neutrino effective mass evaluation.

There is a recently renewed experimental and theoretical interest in studying single and double charge exchange reactions with heavy ions. We would like to discuss a preliminary theoretical study of charge exchange reactions within the Distorted Wave Born approximation (DWBA) framework. This allows us to include the effect of the different competing transfer channels in a proper way. Evidences seems to show that, under suitable conditions, the charge exchange process could reveal safely dominant, although the competition between the two mechanisms calls for further investigation.

International audience; In heavy ion collisions at low energy (E/A < 10–15 MeV/nucleon) the N/Z ratio in the entrance channel is closely related to the isospin degree of freedom and can influence the reaction mechanisms and consequently the production of the fragments in the exit channel. We analyse the fragment production cross sections in the reactions$^{86}$Kr +$^{48}$Ca and$^{78}$Kr +$^{40}$Ca , at the laboratory energy of 10 MeV/nucleon. The experiment was conducted at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Sud in Catania, by using the $ 4\pi$ detector CHIMERA. For the two reactions, elastic scattering measurements are performed to extract the normalization factor used to evaluate the absolute cross sections. Velocity and energy spectra, mass and charge distributions, as well as dynamic features of reaction products, are studied. The study of the characteristics of mass and charge distributions, energy and velocity spectra of the reaction products shows mainly a relaxed component, related to fusion reaction followed by evaporation or binary decay. Nevertheless signals ascribable to a non equilibrated component are present. Structure effects are evident in the staggered shape of emitted fragments cross sections and are more pronounced in the neutron poor system. The analysis highlights clear differences for the two systems in the contributions arising from different reaction mechanisms. Besides, a study of the overall influence from the entrance channel energy is performed. Comparisons to DNS (DiNuclear System) and GEMINI++ models are reported. The data analysis indicates a slightly higher fusion-evaporation cross section and a strongly pronounced probability of fission-like processes for the neutron poor system with respect to the neutron rich one. The neutron enrichment seems thus to limit the formation of the composite system and to inhibit the fission decay channel.

International audience; NUMEN aims at accessing experimentally driven information on Nuclear Matrix Elements (NME) involved in the half-life of the neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ), by high-accuracy measurements of the cross sections of Heavy Ion (HI) induced Double Charge Exchange (DCE) reactions. First evidence about the possibility to get quantitative information about NME from experiments is found for the (^18O,^18Ne) and (^20Ne,^20O) reactions. Moreover, to infer the neutrino average masses from the possible measurement of the half-life of 0νββ decay, the knowledge of the NME is a crucial aspect. The key tools for this project are the high resolution Superconducting Cyclotron beams and the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer at INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Sud in Catania (Italy). The measured cross sections are extremely low, limiting the present exploration to few selected isotopes of interest in the context of typically low-yield experimental runs. A major upgrade of the LNS facility is foreseen in order to increase the experimental yield of at least two orders of magnitude, thus making feasible a systematic study of all the cases of interest.

Heavy ion double charge exchange reactions (DCE) are discussed, within DWBA, in synergy with the main goal of the NUMEN project, i. e. to extract information on the 0νββ decay nuclear matrix element from DCE cross section measurements. The first step to reach this goal is to assess the analogy between the DCE nuclear matrix element and that describing 0νββ decay; then it is necessary to single out a term related to the desired double beta decay nuclear matrix element from the DCE cross-section expression (cross section factorization). Heavy ion DCE processes, are depicted in terms of sequence of two correlated or uncorrelated Single Charge Exchange (SCE) reactions, resembling in this way 0νββ and 2νββ decay, respectively. Here, the formalism for describing DCE reactions within the latter scenario is described. Once provided the formalism leading both to SCE and DCE cross section factorization, together with its limitations, a preliminary comparison with experimental DCE data is shown.

Recent results connected to nuclear collision dynamics, from low up to relativistic energies, are reviewed. Heavy ion reactions offer the unique opportunity to probe the complex nuclear many-body dynamics and to explore, in laboratory experiments, transient states of nuclear matter under several conditions of density, temperature and charge asymmetry. From the theoretical point of view, transport models are an essential tool to undertake these investigations and make a connection between the nuclear effective interaction and sensitive observables of experimental interest. In this article, we mainly focus on the description of results of transport models for a selection of reaction mechanisms, also considering comparisons of predictions of different approaches. This analysis can help understanding the impact of the interplay between mean-field and correlation effects, as well as of in-medium effects, on reaction observables, which is an essential point also for extracting information on the nuclear Equation of State. A special emphasis will be given to the review of recent studies aimed at constraining the density behavior of the nuclear symmetry energy. For reactions at medium (Fermi) energies, we will describe light particle and fragment emission mechanisms, together with isospin transport effects. Collective effects characterizing nuclear collision dynamics, such as transverse and elliptic flows, will be discussed for relativistic heavy ion reactions, together with meson production and isotopic ratios., accepted for publication on Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics

We present several possibilities offered by the dynamics of intermediate energy heavy ion collisions to investigate the nuclear matter equation of state (EoS) beyond the ground state. In particular the relation between the reaction dynamics and the high density nuclear EoS is discussed by comparing theoretical results with experiments.

International audience; The article describes the main achievements of the NUMEN project together with an updated and detailed overview of the related R&D activities and theoretical developments. First experimental results obtained at the INFN-LNS laboratory for the$^{40}$Ca($^{18}$O,$^{18}$Ne)$^{40}$Ar reaction at 270MeV give an encouraging indication on the capability of the proposed technique to access relevant quantitative information. The main experimental tools for this project are the K800 Superconducting Cyclotron and MAGNEX spectrometer. The former is used for the acceleration of the required high resolution and low emittance heavy-ion beams and the latter is the large acceptance magnetic spectrometer for the detection of the ejectiles. The use of the high-order trajectory reconstruction technique, implemented in MAGNEX, allows to reach the experimental resolution and sensitivity required for the accurate measurement of the DCE cross sections at forward angles. However, the tiny values of such cross sections and the resolution requirements demand beam intensities much larger than those manageable with the present facility. The on-going upgrade of the INFN-LNS facilities in this perspective is part of the NUMEN project and will be discussed in the article.

The production/absorption rate of particles in compressed and heated asymmetric matter is studied using a Relativistic Mean Field (RMF) transport model with an isospin dependent collision term. We show that the K+/K° ratio reflects the isospin effects on the production rates just because of the large sensitivity around the threshold. The results are very promising with respect to the possibility of a direct link between particle production data in exotic Heavy Ion Collisions (HIC) and the isospin dependent part of the Equation of State (EoS) at high baryon densities.

International audience; The study of nuclei properties and of collision dynamics is a very active research field whose result have implications in different domains as for example astrophysics. The present and future facilities delivering radioactive ion beams with high intensity allow to extend these studies in the region far from the stability valley. New insight has thus been found on the effects of neutron richness on reaction mechanisms as well as on nuclear structure and nuclear matter properties, as for instance, the role of symmetry energy term of the nuclear Equation of State. The presence of diverse reaction products demands for highly performing and very specialized devices, also able to disentangle among different mechanisms, from fast dynamical processes to statistical emission from equilibrated sources. Numerous studies of the effects of N/Z ratio on fusion and associated processes can be found at different energies, together with many examples of the influence of neutron richness on the reaction time scale and the competition between equilibrated and prompt processes. A survey of very recent findings obtained with the CHIMERA and FARCOS devices is presented.

Reliable nuclear fragmentation models are of utmost importance in hadron therapy, where Monte Carlo (MC) simulations are used to compute the input parameters of the treatment planning software, to validate the deposited dose calculation, to evaluate the biological effectiveness of the radiation, to correlate the \( \beta + \) emitters production in the patient body with the delivered dose, and to allow a non-invasive treatment verification. Despite of its large use, the models implemented in Geant4 have shown severe limitations in reproducing the measured secondaries yields in ions interaction below 100 MeV/A, in term of production rates, angular and energy distributions. We present a benchmark of the Geant4 models with double-differential cross section of the secondary fragments produced in the \( ^{12} {\text{C}} \) fragmentation at 62 MeV/A on thin carbon target. Such a benchmark includes the recently implemented model “Liege Intranuclear Cascade’’. Moreover, we present the preliminary results, obtained in simulating the same interaction, with the “Boltzmann-Langevin One Body’’ model (BLOB). BLOB is a semiclassical one-body approaches to solve the Boltzmann-Langevin equation. It includes a mean-field propagation term, on the basis of an effective interaction. In addition to the mean field term, BLOB introduces fluctuations in full phase space through a modified collision term where nucleon-nucleon correlations are explicitly involved. It has been developed to simulate the heavy ion interactions in the Fermi-energy regime. In this work, we show the BLOB capabilities in describing \( ^{12} {\text{C}} \) fragmentation, in the perspective of a direct implementation in Geant4. Monte Carlo simulation, nuclear interaction, nuclear fragmentation, hadron therapy.

The theory of heavy-ion single-charge exchange reactions is reformulated. In momentum space, the reaction amplitude factorizes into a product of projectile and target transition form factors, folded with the nucleon-nucleon isovector interaction. The multipole structure of the transition form factors is studied in detail for Fermi-type non-spin-flip and Gamow-Teller-type spin-flip transitions, also serving to establish the connection to nuclear β decay. The reaction kernel is evaluated for central and rank-2 tensor interactions. Initial- and final-state ion-ion elastic interactions are accounted for by a distortion coefficient. Since the ion-ion interactions are dominated by the imaginary part of the optical potentials, the distortion coefficients can be evaluated in the strong absorption limit. For a Gaussian potential form factor, the distortion coefficient is evaluated in closed form, revealing the relation to the total reaction cross section. It is shown that at small momentum transfer distortion effects reduce to a simple scaling factor, allowing us to define a reduced forward-angle cross section which is given by nuclear matrix elements of β decay type. Thus we introduce new unit cross sections, as those traditionally used with light projectiles for spectroscopic purposes, for heavy-ion charge-exchange reactions. Results are discussed for τ ± excitations of 18 O and 40 Ca , respectively. Spectral distributions of nuclear-charge-changing transitions are obtained by self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogolubov (HFB) and quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) theory and compared to spectroscopic data. The interplay of nuclear structure and reaction dynamics is illustrated for the single-charge exchange (SCE) reaction 18 O + 40 Ca → 18 F + 40 K at T lab = 270 MeV, by performing full-scale numerical calculations of the SCE cross section. We also show that the latter compare rather well with the results obtained within the strong absorption limit, thus confirming the possibility to factorize the forward-angle cross section into intrinsic nuclear transition dynamics and reaction dynamics. Simulations by transport codes are indispensable to extract valuable physics information from heavy ion collisions. In order to understand the origins of discrepancies between different widely used transport codes, we compare 15 such codes under controlled conditions of a system confined to a box with periodic boundary, initialized with Fermi-Dirac distributions at saturation density and temperatures of either 0 or 5 MeV. In such calculations, one is able to check separately the different ingredients of a transport code. In this second publication of the code evaluation project, we only consider the two-body collision term, i.e. we perform cascade calculations. When the Pauli blocking is artificially suppressed, the collision rates are found to be consistent for most codes (to within $1\%$ or better) with analytical results, or completely controlled results of a basic cascade code after eliminating the correlations within the same pair of colliding particles. In calculations with active Pauli blocking, the blocking probability was found to deviate from the expected reference values. The reason is found in substantial phase-space fluctuations and smearing tied to numerical algorithms and model assumptions in the representation of phase space. This results in the reduction of the blocking probability in most transport codes, so that the simulated system gradually evolves away from the Fermi-Dirac towards a Boltzmann distribution. As a result of this investigation, we are able to make judgements about the most effective strategies in transport simulations for determining the collision probabilities and the Pauli blocking. Investigation in a similar vein of other ingredients in transport calculations, like the mean field propagation or the production of nucleon resonances and mesons, will be discussed in the future publications., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures. The excitation of the Dynamical Dipole mode along the fusion path was investigated for the first time in the formation of a heavy composite system in the A~190 mass region, in fusion-evaporation and fission events. The composite system was formed at identical conditions of excitation energy and spin from two reactions with different charge asymmetry: the charge asymmetric 40Ca + 152Sm and the nearly charge symmetric 48Ca + 144Sm at E lab =11 and 10.1 MeV/nucleon, respectively. In this paper, we report the results on fusion evaporation events and the preliminary analysis on fission channel.

Perturbing fluids of neutrons and protons (nuclear matter) may lead, as the most catastrophic effect, to the rearrangement of the fluid into clusters of nucleons. A similar process may occur in a single atomic nucleus undergoing a violent perturbation, like in heavy-ion collisions tracked in particle accelerators at around 30 to 50 MeV per nucleon: in this conditions, after the initial collision shock, the nucleus expands and then clusterises into several smaller nuclear fragments. Microscopically, when violent perturbation are applied to nuclear matter, a process of clusterisation arises from the combination of several fluctuation modes of large-amplitude where neutrons and protons may oscillate in phase or out of phase. The imposed perturbation leads to conditions of instability, the wavelengths which are the most amplified have sizes comparable to small atomic nuclei. We found that these conditions, explored in heavy-ion collisions, correspond to the splitting of a nucleus into fragments ranging from Oxygen to Neon in a time interval shorter than one zeptosecond (10$^{-21}$s). From the out-of-phase oscillations of neutrons and protons another property arises, the smaller fragments belonging to a more volatile phase get more neutron enriched: in the heavy-ion collision case this process, called distillation, reflects in the isotopic distributions of the fragments. The resulting dynamical description of heavy-ion collisions is an improvement with respect to more usual statistical approaches, based on the equilibrium assumption. It allows in fact to characterise also the very fast early stages of the collision process which are out of equilibrium. In nuclear reactions at Fermi energies two and multi particles intensity interferometry correlation methods are powerful tools in order to pin down the characteristic time scale of the emission processes. In this paper we summarize an improved application of the fragment-fragment correlation function in the specific physics case of heavy projectile-like (PLF) binary massive splitting in two fragments of intermediate mass(IMF). Results are shown for the reverse kinematics reaction 124 Sn+64 Ni at 35 AMeV that has been investigated by using the forward part of CHIMERA multi-detector. The analysis was performed as a function of the charge asymmetry of the observed couples of IMF. We show a coexistence of dynamical and statistical components as a function of the charge asymmetry. Transport CoMD simulations are compared with the data in order to pin down the timescale of the fragments production and the relevant ingredients of the in medium effective interaction used in the transport calculations.

To access information on neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ) nuclear matrix elements, it has been proposed by the NUMEN collaboration to exploit the analogies between double beta decay processes and double charge exchange (DCE) nuclear reactions, looking in particular at the conditions where the corresponding cross section can be factorized into nuclear reaction and nuclear structure terms. DCE reactions can be treated as a convolution of two correlated or uncorrelated single charge exchange (SCE) processes, resembling 0νββ and 2νββ, respectively. Thus it is important to model first SCE processes, to get a deeper insight into the possibility to factorize the corresponding cross section, so one can gain a better understanding of DCE cross section factorization. In this contribution, DCE reactions are discussed in terms of the convolution of two uncorrelated SCE processes, which should allow one to extract information on 2νββ nuclear matrix elements. These theoretical investigations are performed in close synergy with the experimental activity running at INFN-LNS within the NUMEN project.

We perform Time Dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) calculations to investigate the small amplitude dipole response of selected neutron-rich nuclei and Sn isotopes. A detailed comparison with the dipole strength predicted by Random-Phase Approximation (RPA) calculations is presented for the first time. TDHF results are also confronted to Vlasov calculations, to explore up to which extent a semi-classical picture can explain the properties of the nuclear response. The focus is on the low-energy response, below the Giant Dipole Resonance region, where different modes of non negligible strength are identified. We show that the relative weight of these excitations evolves with nuclear global features, such as density profile and neutron skin, which in turn reflect impor tant properties of the nuclear effective interaction. A thorough analysis of the associated transition densities turns out to be quite useful to better characterize the mixed isoscalar(IS)/isovector(IV) nature of the different modes and their surface/volume components. In particular, we show that the dipole response in the so-called Pygmy Dipole Resonance region corresponds to isoscalar-like surface oscillations, of larger strength in nuclei with a more diffuse surface. The ratio between the IV and IS Energy Weighted Sum Rule fractions exhausted in this region is shown to almost linearly increase with the neutron skin thickness in Sn isotopes., Comment: 16 pages, 20 figures

There is a recently renewed interest on the study of single and double charge exchange reactions with heavy ions. We report here a preliminary theoretical study of double charge exchange reactions in terms of two successive charge exchanges in 2nd order Distorted Wave Born approximation. This allows us to include the effect of the different transfer channels in an approximate way. Evidences show that the charge exchange process is dominant. The following one in importance is the combination of one single charge exchange, one neutron pick-up and one proton stripping. This particular process calls for further investigation. Within the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) approach, we investigate the impact of several ingredients of the nuclear effective interaction, such as incompressibility, symmetry energy, effective mass, derivative of the Lane potential, and surface terms on the exit channel (fusion vs quasifission) observed in the reaction $^{238}\mathrm{U}+^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$, close to the Coulomb barrier. Our results show that all the ingredients listed above contribute to the competition between fusion and quasifission processes; however, the leading role in determining the outcome of the reaction is played by incompressibility, symmetry energy, and the isoscalar coefficient of the surface term. This study unravels the complexity of the fusion and quasifission reaction dynamics and helps us to understand the microscopic processes responsible for the final outcome of low-energy heavy-ion collisions in terms of relevant features of the nuclear effective interaction and associated equation of state (EOS).

The aim of the present study was to provide experimental procedures for the identification of anthocyanin-based dyes used in antiquity. In particular, we assessed the possibility to identify anthocyanins, both in plant extracts and in dyed textiles, by means of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), a very chemically specific technique that is moreover sensitive to the changes in structures of molecules, phenomena that occur extensively in the chemistry of anthocyanins. The choice of the plant sources (bilberry, elderberry, sumac, purple corn and hollyhock) was based on their attested use in history as dyeing matters. Suitable extraction and pre-treatment procedures were optimized both for plant sources (berries, cob glumes and flowers) and textiles dyed with such sources in the laboratory, followed by SERS analyses at different pH values. Finally, special attention was paid to the well-known instability of anthocyanins: dyed wool samples were exposed to artificial aging in order to verify the possibility to identify such molecules also in faded textiles. The achievement of reliable surface-enhanced Raman spectra from these samples encourages us to suggest the protocol for the analysis of historical objects. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

International audience; In heavy-ion collisions at low energy, the decay mode of the compound nucleus formed in fusion reactions can be strongly influenced by the isospin degree of freedom, strictly connected to the isotopic ratio N/Z of the system. The competition among the disintegration modes of 118,134Ba∗ produced in 78,86Kr+40,48Ca reactions at 10 A MeV has been studied in the framework of the ISODEC experiment, and experimental data have been compared with the prediction of GEMINI++ and DiNuclear System (DNS) models.

The NUMEN project aims at accessing experimentally driven information on Nuclear Matrix Elements (NME) involved in the half-life of the neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ), by high-accuracy measurements of Heavy Ion (HI) induced Double Charge Exchange (DCE) reaction cross sections. In particular, the (18O,18Ne) and (20Ne,20O) reactions are used as tools for β+β+ and β−β− decays, respectively. In the experiments, performed at INFN - Laboratory Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania, the beams are accelerated by the Superconducting Cyclotron (CS) and the reaction ejectiles are detected the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer. The measured cross sections are challengingly low (a few nb), being the total reaction cross section much larger (a few b), thus a high sensitivity and a large rejection capability are demanded to the experimental set-up. This limits the present exploration to few selected isotopes of interest in the context of typically low-yield experimental runs. A major upgrade of the LNS facility is foreseen in order to increase the experimental yield of at least two orders of magnitude, still keeping the high sensitivity of the present set-up, making it feasible a systematic study of all the cases of interest. Frontiers technologies are going to be developed, to this purpose, for the accelerator and the detection systems. In parallel, advanced theoretical models are being developed in order to extract the nuclear structure information from the measured cross sections.

The aim of the NUMEN project is to access the Nuclear Matrix Elements (NME), involved in the half life of the neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ), by measuring the cross sections of Heavy Ions (HI) induced Double Charge Exchange (DCE) reactions with high accuracy. First evidence of the possibility to get quantitative information about NME from experiments is shown in the reaction 40Ca(18O,18Ne)40Ar at 270 MeV, performed with MAGNEX spectrometer using Superconducting Cyclotron (CS) beams at INFN - Laboratory Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania. Preliminary tests on 116Sn and 116Cd target are already performed. High beam intensity is the new frontiers for these studies.
