Objective: To evaluate the droplets and aerosols, posing potential risks of infection transmission of COVID-19 disease in dentistry . Material and Methods: PubMed, Embase, ISI, Scopus, Medicine have been used to search for articles between September 2019 to December 2020. Data extracted from the studies were included, study, study design, sample size, Sample collection time, Hallway Air Samples (copies/L of air), Personal Air Samples (copies/L of air). Effect size with 95% confidence interval (CI), fixed effect model, Inverse-variance methods were calculated. The Meta-analysis was evaluated with Stata/MP v.16 statistical software (The fastest version of Stata). Results: According to the purpose of the study, 64 articles were found; studies that did not meet the inclusion criteria were excluded from the study; the full text of 11 studies was reviewed. Finally, two studies were selected. The effect size of airborne COVID-19 concentrations of the hallway and personal air samples was 64% copies/L of air (ES, 0.64 95% CI=-1.45-2.73) and 100% copies/L air (ES, 1.00 95% CI=-1.77-3.76), respectively . Conclusion: Evidence of aerosol transmission of COVID-19 in observational studies of patients with COVID-19 was 64% copies/L of air and 100% copies/L of air in the hallway and personal air samples, respectively.

The sphenoid sinus is the most inaccessible part of the face, being inside the sphenoid bone and closely related to numerous vital neural and vascular structures. The objective of this study was to analyze and evaluate the variation of anatomy and the volume of the sphenoid sinus using helical computed tomography and medical imaging software. A total of 47 helical CT scans of sinuses of male and female individuals aged 18–86 years were selected. The images were formatted using ITK-SNAP software, consisting of three steps: (1) segmentation; (2) volumetric analysis and (3) 3D reconstruction. The sphenoid sinuses were also classified according to Hammer, i.e., in conchal, pre-sellar, sellar and post-sellar types. A single investigator, who is specialist in dental radiology and was trained and calibrated, performed the volume and image analysis. After 15 days, the segmentations were repeated. The Dunn’s multiple comparison test revealed significant differences in the volume rankings between the right and left sides (P = 0.0002), with the post-sellar type presenting the greatest volume on the right side compared to pre-sellar and sellar types. In the left sphenoid sinuses, the post-sellar type showed the greatest volume. The Lin’s correlation coefficient showed excellent reproducibility values. According to the applied methodology, it was found that the volume of the sphenoid sinus was influenced by neither age nor gender (P > 0.005). There was difference in the volumes of sphenoid sinus on the right and left sides and in the anatomical classification.

Objective: The aim of this retrospective study was to determine and quantify incidental findings in CBCT scans taken exclusively for orthodontic purposes. Methods: A total of 202 scans were evaluated by two examiners and classified into five different groups. Results: A total of 227 incidental findings were found in a sample of patients aged 5-58 years old. The highest number of findings was of dental origin (n = 157), followed by airway (N = 46), skull (N = 16) and ATM (n = 8). Scans with no incidental finding accounted for 20% of the examinations. Subjects having lower mean age were found in the group of airway findings. The prevalence of incidental findings in the current study was consistent with the literature, thus corroborating their high frequency. Orthodontists who make use of CBCT are responsible for assessment of all data. Conclusion: The precise evaluation of incidental findings may help in the early diagnosis, treatment and patient monitoring. Further studies should be conducted to assess the influence of these findings on the orthodontic treatment. RESUMO Objetivo: Investigar e quantificar achados incidentais em exames de tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico realizadas unicamente para fins ortodôntico. Métodos: Foram incluídos os exames de tomografia de feixe cônico com finalidade de diagnóstico ortodôntico no período de novembro de 2011 a abril de 2014 (n=202) avaliados por dois examinadores e os dados coletados classificados em cinco grupos diferentes. Foi realizada análise exploratória dos dados através do cálculo de média, desvio padrão, frequência e porcentagem. A associação entre o local do achado e o gênero foi verificada através do teste exato de Fisher. Resultados: Foi encontrado um total de 227 achados; o grupo com maior número de achados foi o de origem dental (n=157), seguido do grupo de vias aéreas (n=46), de crânio (n=16) e de ATM (n=8). Exames sem nenhum achado representaram 20% do total. Os sujeitos com menores médias de idade foram encontrados no grupo de vias aéreas. A prevalência de alterações tomográficas incidentais em pacientes ortodônticos é alta. Conclusão: Um cuidadoso diagnóstico das imagens de tomografia de feixe cônico além da região de interesse ortodôntica é indispensável para prevenir patologias ocultas. Estudos adicionais podem ser realizados para avaliar qual a influência desses achados no tratamento ortodôntico.

Introduction: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is considered the examination of choice for the diagnosis of abnormalities in the TMJ. Considering the difficulty in defining and standardizing the diagnostic criteria, and the need for more accurate and reliable diagnosis of conditions in the TMJ, the aim of the present study was to compare three different MRI parameters: Tl-weighted, T2-weighted and proton density-weighted in the diagnosis of changes in the temporomandibular joint. Materials and Methods: Fifty magnetic resonance imaging examinations of the temporomandibular joint (100 temporomandibular joints) were conducted according to a protocol that evaluates disc position, disc function and bone abnormalities. The images were obtained bilaterally in parasagittal sections in closed and open mouth positions in the three studied parameters Three trained oral radiologists assessed all the images. Reliability of the intra- and inter-examiner response was analyzed using the concordance test (Fleiss' kappa; α = 0.05). Results: The reliability of the response patterns between observers for different protocols varied from very good to good. Observers were less constant in their response patterns when assessing proton density-weighted images. There was very good agreement for disc morphology, cortical bone and bone structures/functions; however, there was wide variation for medullary bone marrow signs. Conclusion: T2-weighted imaging was found to be the best examination to assess the medullary bone. For evaluating of disc morphology, cortical bone and bone structures/functions, any protocol is indicated once the protocol does not interfere with the analysis.

Objective The aim was to evaluate the relationship between orofacial function, dentofacial morphology, and bite force in young subjects. Subjects and Methods Three hundred and sixteen subjects were divided according to dentition stage (early, intermediate, and late mixed and permanent dentition). Orofacial function was screened using the Nordic Orofacial Test-Screening (NOT-S). Orthodontic treatment need, bite force, lateral and frontal craniofacial dimensions and presence of sleep bruxism were also assessed. The results were submitted to descriptive statistics, normality and correlation tests, analysis of variance, and multiple linear regression to test the relationship between NOT-S scores and the studied independent variables. Results The variance of NOT-S scores between groups was not significant. The evaluation of the variables that significantly contributed to NOT-S scores variation showed that age and presence of bruxism related to higher NOT-S total scores, while the increase in overbite measurement and presence of closed lip posture related to lower scores. Bite force did not show a significant relationship with scores of orofacial dysfunction. No significant correlations between craniofacial dimensions and NOT-S scores were observed. Conclusion Age and sleep bruxism were related to higher NOT-S scores, while the increase in overbite measurement and closed lip posture contributed to lower scores of orofacial dysfunction.

Dental implant and chin osteotomy are executed on the mandible body and the mental nerve is an important anatomical limit. The aim of this research was to know the position of the mental nerve loop comparing result in panoramic radiography and cone beam computed tomography. We analyzed 94 hemimandibles and the patient sample comprised female and male subjects of ages ranging from 18 to 52 years (mean age, 35 years) selected randomly from the database of patients at the Division of Oral Radiology at Piracicaba Dental School State University of Campinas; the anterior loop (AL) of the mental nerve was evaluated regarding the presence or absence, which was classified as rectilinear or curvilinear and measurement of its length was obtained. The observations were made in the digital panoramic radiography (PR) and the cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) according to a routine technique. The frequencies of the AL identified through PR and CBCT were different: in PR the loop was identified in 42.6% of cases, and only 12.8% were bilateral. In contrast, the AL was detected in 29.8% of the samples using CBCT, with 6.4% being bilateral; Statistical comparison between PR and CBCT showed that the PR led to false-positive diagnosis of the AL in this sample. According to the results of this study, the frequency of AL is low. Thus, it can be assumed that it is not a common condition in this population.

This study aimed at evaluating the validity of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) for assessing mandibular bone quality using the Klemetti classification. The morphology of the endosteal mandibular cortex of 30 (60 hemi-mandibles) postmenopausal women between the ages of 45 and 80 years was evaluated based on the Klemetti classification in panoramic radiographs used as reference images. Afterwards, panoramic reconstruction and cross-sectional slices of CBCT examinations of these patients were analyzed and categorized according to the same classification. All the images were assessed by two oral radiologists. The McNemar-Bowker test compared the agreement between the CBCT images and the reference images. No differences were found between the diagnostic results based on panoramic radiography and panoramic reconstruction. However, the mean scores for the cross-sectional evaluation were higher, and the results, statistically different from the others. Based on the disagreement found between the panoramic radiographs and the CBCT cross-sectional slices, the Klemetti classification is not an adequate means of assessing bone quality with CBCT. On the other hand, the higher values found for the cross-sectional slices could be associated with better visibility on the CBCT images.

The objective of this study was to quantify the cortical bone thickness of the mandibular ramus to determine conditions related to sagittal split ramus osteotomy and placement of screws. The patient sample comprised 44 subjects of ages ranging from 46 to 52 years (mean age, 49 years). The cone-beam computed tomography was performed and realized 3 cuts in the third molar area (section A), 5 mm posterior (section B), and 5 mm posterior to the latter (section C). Measurement in the cortical areas of the superior and inferior levels related to mandibular canal and measurement related to the total width of the mandible was executed. Intraclass correlation coefficient with P < 0.05 was used. The result showed that the buccal and lingual cortical zone did not present statistical differences, and the minor value was 1.5 mm for each one. There were no differences in the superior and inferior cortical bone, and the total width of the mandible was between 15.9 and 8.5 mm in the anterior area, between 17.4 and 12.8 mm in the middle area, and between 18 and 8.8 mm in the posterior area. The distance superiorly to the mandibular canal presented a minimal SD with a mean of 8.5 mm in the anterior region, 10.6 mm for the middle region, and 12.5 mm in the posterior region. In conclusion, the cortical thickness of the mandibular ramus in the adult population is particularly strong and offers a good anchorage for screw insertion in sagittal split ramus osteotomy.

The aim of this study was to evaluate radiomorphometric indices in dental panoramic radiographs in order to identify possible interrelationships between these indices and the sex and age of the patients analyzed. The study included 1287 digital panoramic radiographic images of patients that were grouped into five age groups (1=age 17–20; 2=age 21–35; 3=age 36–55; 4=age 56–69; 5=over age 70).Two indices—cortical width at the gonion (GI) and below the mental for a men (MI) — were measured bilaterally in all panoramic radiographs. Statistical analysis was performed with Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests (alpha=0.05). Results for the indices measurements showed significant differences among patient age groups of both sexes, considering that groups 4 and 5 presented lower values for the cortical width of both indices. Um total de 1.287 radiografias panorâmicas digitais de indivíduos de 17-90 anos de idade, de ambos os gêneros, foram selecionadas e distribuídas em cinco grupos de idade: 17-20 anos, 21-35, 36-55, 56-69 e 70 ou mais. O IM e IG, foram avaliados utilizando o software Radioimp ® e as medidas da espessura do osso cortical foram feitas bilateralmente, por um pesquisador experiente. The aim of this study was to analyze if the presence of impacted third molars, and their positions in the mandibular angle, can change the bone quality in this area, considering the measure of the cortical thickness in this region as representative or not for mandible fracture risk. Software was used to analyze 50 digital images from panoramic radiographs of patients who had one or two impacted third molars in the mandible, and 30 digital images of patients with agenesis of the mandibular third molar. The thickness of the cortical region of the mandible was measured; it was possible to draw a parallel line to the posterior portion of the mandible and a parallel line to the body of this bone on each side of the image. At the intersection of these lines near the distal portion of the second molar, another line was set up to serve as reference in the cortical thickness measurement. It could be concluded that the cortical thickness of the mandibular angle in male patients without impacted third molars was greater than the thickness in patients with these teeth, and no difference in thickness was found for the female group.

A mandíbula é o osso mais forte e resistente do crânio, possuindo um grande número de características e acidentes anatômicos que auxiliam na individualização, como seus diversos forames e canais, o tornando um item importante no estabelecimento do perfil biológico. Os Forames Mandibulares Medianos (FMM) são entradas de canais que tem a abertura da sua luz na superfície da cortical óssea da porção lingual da mandíbula e vão em direção a região intraóssea, geralmente situados na região de incisivos e pré-molares, carregando em seu interior estruturas importantes da área da língua. O presente estudo objetivou utilizar os FMMs como uma nova metodologia, para avaliar sua aplicabilidade na estimativa do sexo. Foram analisadas 203 tomografias computadorizadas de indivíduos dos sexos feminino e masculino, avaliando características como localização, quantidade, diâmetro e distância da linha média dos Forames Mandibulares Medianos. Os resultados demostraram alta concordância inter e intraobservador e dez das variáveis demonstraram diferenças entre os sexos (quantidade total de forames vestibulares, quantidade de forames vestibulares laterais esquerdo e direitos, diâmetro dos forames vestibulares laterais esquerdos e direitos, diâmetro dos forames linguais laterais esquerdos e direitos e por fim as distâncias dos forames vestibulares laterais esquerdos e direitos, assim como a distância dos forames linguais laterais direitos). O diagnóstico do modelo final ajustado resultou em um modelo preditivo com 62,50% de acurácia. O método isoladamente possui uma taxa de acerto considerada baixa. No entanto, tal resultado se torna promissor quando na medida em que sinaliza que as variáveis estudadas podem ser acrescentadas a outras que também sabe-se estarem associadas ao dimorfismo sexual e para que possam gerar um modelo preditivo com acurácia maior. The mandible is the strongest and most resistant bone of the skull, having large number of characteristics and anatomical accidents that assist in individualization, such as its various foramina and channels, making it an important item in the biological profile build. The Median Mandibular foramina (MMF) are entrances of channels that have their light opening on the surface of the bony cortex of the lingual portion of the mandible and go towards the intraosseous region, located in the region of incisors and premolars, carrying in their interiors important structures of the language area. The present study aimed to use MMFs as a new methodology, to assess their effectiveness in estimating sex. 203 computed tomography scans from female and male were analyzed, evaluating characteristics such as location, quantity, diameter and distance from the midline of the Median Mandibular foramina. The results showed high inter and intra-observer agreement, and ten of the variables demonstrated differences between the sexes (total number of vestibular foramina, left and right lateral vestibular foramen, diameter of left and right lateral vestibular foramina, diameter of lingual foramina left and right lateral, right and finally as distances of the left and right lateral vestibular foramina, as well as the distance of the right lateral lingual foramina). The diagnosis of the compatible final model resulted in a predictive model with 62.50% accuracy. The method alone has a hit rate considered low. However, the result becomes promising as it signals that the variables studied can be caused by others that are also known to be associated with sexual dimorphism and so that they can generate a predictive model with greater accuracy.

O câncer de cabeça e pescoço (CCP) apresentam incidência mundial sendo considerado um problema de saúde pública. O diagnóstico tardio dos carcinomas ainda é uma realidade presente, implicando em terapias como a radioterapia (RT). Esta terapia antineoplásica pode causar diversos efeitos colaterais tais como: mucosite, dificuldade de deglutição, alteração ou perda do paladar, xerostomia, trismo, cárie de radiação, osteorradionecrose, alterações do ligamento periodontal e infecções oportunistas. Os efeitos adversos da RT instituída para tratamento de pacientes com CCP, podem interferir significativamente na qualidade de vida desses indivíduos, causando possíveis alterações ósseas e dentais, daqueles que acometem as partes moles. Dentre elas podemos citar as mucosites, hipossialia, agenesia, cáries por radiação, trismo e osteorradionecrose (ORN). Esta última constitui uma complicação grave e de difícil tratamento. O presente estudo objetivou ponderar a relação dose-efeito da radioterapia de cabeça e pescoço, em consideração aos dentes e estruturas ósseas do complexo maxilo - mandibular, avaliando e explorando o impacto do tamanho do tumor ,sua distribuição e dosimetria no complexo maxilo mandibular de pacientes submetidos a radioterapia de CCP. A IMRT se mostrou a melhor indicação de tratamento quando comparada a RT, pois reduziu muito os efeitos encontrados nas radiografias, o que mostrou sua baixa toxicidade nos tecidos adjacentes saudáveis. A partir dos resultados obtidos observou se que a radioterapia pode provocar alterações significativas na estrutura do CMM, ademais da região própria ao tumor, e os médicos oncologistas juntamente com dentistas devem se apoiar na detecção e abordagem dessas sequelas e acompanhamento dos seus tratamentos e prevenções, sendo necessário que os profissionais de odontologia orientem e façam as devidas intervenções para proporcionar melhores condições aos pacientes em tratamento de radioterapia de cabeça e pescoço. Head and neck neoplasms present a worldwide incidence and are considered a public health problem. The late diagnosis of carcinomas is still a reality, implicating in thera-pies such as radiotherapy. This antineoplastic therapy can cause several side effects such as: mucositis, difficulty in swallowing, alteration or loss of taste, xerostomia, tris-mus, radiation caries, osteoradionecrosis, alterations of the periodontal ligament and opportunistic infections. The adverse effects of radiotherapy instituted for the treatment of patients with cancer of the head and neck region can significantly interfere in the quality of life of these individuals, causing possible bone and dental changes in those that affect the soft parts. Among them we can mention mucositis, hyposialia, agenesis, radiation caries, trismus and osteoradionecrosis (ORN). The latter constitutes a seri-ous complication and is difficult to treat. The present study aims to evaluate the dose-effect relationship of head and neck radiotherapy, considering the teeth and bone structures of the maxillo-mandibular complex, evaluating and exploring the impact of tumor size, its distribution and dosimetry in the mandibular nipple complex of patients submitted to CCP radiotherapy. The IMRT performed a better comparison procedure when compared to what is more difficult to see on radiographs when compared to toxicity in adjacent healthy systems. From the results obtained, the effects of radio-therapy can cause changes in the structure of the CMM, besides being responsible for the tumor, and the oncologists. It is necessary that dental professionals guide and withdraw care for the treatment of head and neck radiotherapy.

A osteoporose é uma epidemia mundial, exprime altas taxas de morbidade e mortalidade, resultando também em altos custos sociais. O exame de densitometria óssea por dupla emissão de raios-X (DXA) é o exame padrão ouro para o diagnóstico da doença, porém a baixa disponibilidade de equipamentos e o alto custo dificultam o acesso ao exame, principalmente nos países pobres e nos emergentes. Desta forma absorciometria radiografica da falange (AR) se destaca pois tem baixa dose de radiação, é mais simples utilizando apenas uma radiografia de mão e um software. A radiografia panorâmica é amplamente utilizada na rotina do atendimento odontológico no mundo todo, e tem sido estudada para a avaliação de pacientes com baixa densidade mineral óssea (DMO). O objetivo deste estudo foi correlacionar a qualidade óssea mandibular, por meio dos índices radiomorfométricos em radiografia panorâmica, com a qualidade óssea das falanges da mão não dominante, por meio da AR. A amostra constituiu-se por 167 pacientes (128 mulheres e 39 homens) com média de idade de 52.09 (± 11.5) divididos em quatro grupos de acordo com o exame AR: Mulheres Normais (MN) com 92; Mulheres Doentes (MD) com 36; Homens Normais (HN) com 25; e Homens Doentes (HD) com 14.9.
