What started around the late 2000s as the "Clean Label" (CL) trend has now become a meaningful segment of the food market, appealing to consumers who want foods made of a limited number of simple and recognizable ingredients. However, this description and tentative definitions of CL foods are vague, subject to multiple interpretations, and CL remains an informal denomination for foods, making consumers' demands and food manufacturers' offerings hardly compatible. Therefore, rather than attempting an illusory definition of CL foods, this narrative review aims to (1) show how CL appears to be a heuristic used by consumers to attempt to make safe and healthful food choices, (2) discuss how this heuristic overlooks many critical aspect of food safety and healthfulness and is consequently ineffective to guide consumers' choices, and (3) discuss the implications of the CL trend on the food chain's stakeholders and their relationships.

International audience; As the most promising biomass utilization method, biomass gasification is gaining attention as a route for biomass energy production, but the syngas generated from the process contains unacceptable levels of tar. The syngas in reality leads to a liquid–liquid–vapor equilibrium. This syngas becomes saturated with water steam, solvent, and trace of volatile tar. The aim of this work is to study the liquid–(liquid)–vapor equilibrium of extracting solvents (P-xylene, methyl hexadecanoate, and methyl oleate), binary systems (water + solvents), and ternary systems (water + methyl hexadecanoate + model molecule of tar) and to determine the vapor pressure for those systems from 303.15 to 453.15 K. Vaporization enthalpies of each solvent at 298.15 K are also calculated and compared to the literature. The obtained data were correlated using the nonrandom two-liquid (NRTL) model for the liquid phase combined with the perfect gas equation for the vapor phase.

The novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 [coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)] is a highly contagious and devastating virus that has currently infected over 2.5 million people worldwide and resulted in 177 641 deaths as of April 2020.1 Although most people diagnosed with COVID-19 exhibit mild-to-moderate symptoms, early reports from China described vulnerable patient populations, such as the elderly and those with chronic underlying medical conditions including the immunosuppressed, having more severe COVID-19-related illness compared to the general population.2,3 Solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients are one of the largest cohorts of immunosuppressed patients, yet little is known about their risk of contracting the virus, postinfection outcomes, and effect of immunosuppression on the clinical course of the disease. Unique challenges, such as immunosuppression management and interpretation of laboratory data, also exist. Current treatment strategies borrow upon prior experience from other pandemics, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and influenza A virus subtype.4 SARS-CoV-2 primarily affects the respiratory tract, progressing from pneumonia to acute respiratory distress syndrome in severe cases.5 In these cases, there is a recognized cytokine release syndrome (CRS) that when occurs results in multiorgan dysfunction and failure.6 The role of immunosuppression in mounting such inflammatory response is unclear. Inflammatory markers, such as C-reactive protein (CRP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and D-dimer, may reflect disease progression and/or severity.7 Lymphopenia is reported as a common presentation among COVID-19 positive patients.8,9 Treatment options are limited. Antivirals such as hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) with or without azithromycin are widely used empiric options. Remdesivir, an RNA polymerase inhibitor, has shown in vitro activity against SARS-CoV-2 and is currently under phase 3 trial.10 Investigational agents to combat the cytokine response, such as tocilizumab, an interleukin 6 (IL-6) receptor inhibitor, are being studied. Although the exact role of immunosuppression on the progression of COVID-19 is unknown, early case reports of kidney transplant recipients suggest minimizing immunosuppression while continuing steroidal therapy.11 Evaluation of clinical symptoms, utility of biomarkers, and progression of disease are important to understand for optimizing the management in COVID-19 positive SOT recipients. The effect of COVID-19 on the heart, lung, liver, pancreas, and kidney transplant organ systems is not well described. Herein, we present our experience with 21 consecutive SOT recipients diagnosed with COVID-19 at the Houston Methodist J.C. Walter Transplant Center followed to April 22, 2020.

In the framework of a National Environmental Radiation Survey Program, a total of 950 samples were collected and analyzed over 7 years. The program covers different compartment of Lebanese environment, rivers, wells, marine samples, soil, and foodstuff. Air was monitored continuously through a radiation early warning network system. Data collected from 2009 to 2015 are presented in this work. Gross alpha/gross beta values in well samples were below the guidance levels stated by the WHO. Cesium-137 was detected in milk samples, whey, and jam. However, its content was much lower than the national permissible level, while its activity concentration in marine samples was lower than the values reported in studies carried out in the Mediterranean Sea. The activity concentration of 40K in food samples was comparable to studies carried out in neighboring countries and higher than the content determined in non Mediterranean countries. Concerning marine environment, the activity concentrations of natural radionuclides 238U, 232Th, and 40K were comparable to those reported in other studies carried out in different countries. As well as their content in rivers and sediments was lower than those reported in neighboring region. Potassium-40 in food and 210Po in fish were the main contributors to the internal dose. The average annual effective dose due to external exposure and internal, excluding radon gas which constitutes around 43 % of the total dose, was found to be lower than the total worldwide value, 2.4 mSv year-1. Iodine-131 was detected in grass samples, collected in 2011 during Fukushima accident; its content ranged from 0.40 ± 0.06 to 0.9 ± 0.1 Bq kg-1, as well as 137Cs was detected in some seafood samples imported from Japan and neighboring countries. Its activity concentration varied between 0.15 ± 0.04 and 0.40 ± 0.02 Bq kg-1.

In this study, field measurements were made and environmental isotopes and radiological properties were determined in six selected wells located in the coastal area south of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. It is one of the many district areas in Lebanon, threatened by the penetration of seawater into aquifers. Two sampling campaigns were carried out to determine possible seasonal variations. High electrical conductivity was observed, ranging from 1080 to 7900 μS/cm. The total dissolved solids values ranged from 530 to 5600 mg/L. This is attributed to a seawater intrusion confirmed by high chlorine concentrations that ranged from 400 to 3500 mg/L. Isotope data for δ18O/δ2H showed enrichment that is relatively small at the end of wet season due to recharge by local precipitation and infiltration. Carbon-14 ages and 234U/238U ratios confirmed the presence of young water. No radiological hazard was observed as all values lay below the guidance levels of the WHO.

This investigation was carried out in order to assess the marine environmental radioactive pollution and the radiological impact caused by a large production plant of phosphate fertilizer, located in the Lebanese coastal zone. Natural radionuclides ( 238 U, 235 U, 232 Th, 226 Ra, 210 Po, 210 Pb, 40 K) and anthropogenic 137 Cs were measured by alpha and gamma spectrometry in seawater, sediment, biota and coastal soil samples collected from the area impacted by this industry. The limited environmental monitoring program within 2 km of the plant indicates localized contamination with radionuclides of the uranium decay chain mainly due to the transport, the storage of raw materials and the free release of phosphogypsum waste.

A new radiocarbon laboratory has been established recently at the Lebanese Atomic Energy Commission. This laboratory consists of benzene synthesis line and a low background liquid scintillation counter, Tri-Carb 3180 TR/SL for measurements with Bismuth Germanate (BGO) guard detector. The effectiveness of the benzene line was tested firstly by preparing benzene from a wood sample after carbide and acetylene receiving. Normalization and standardization of the liquid scintillation counter was carried out, as well as the Factor of Merit (E2/B) was determined for three different counting regions. To assure accuracy and reliability of results, reference materials were used. Based on z-score and u-score evaluation, as well as Student’s t-test, acceptable data were obtained from travertine and wood samples available through the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA-C2 and IAEA-C5), and humic acid (U) and murex shell (R) from the Fifth International Radiocarbon Intercomparison (VIRI). After that, a preliminary study was done, which is the base for future research in order to assess the anthropogenic impact and degree of environmental pollution in terms of radiocarbon isotope ratio (Δ14C) deduced from the Percent Modern Carbon or PMC. This work represents the results of four reference materials and those of five green grass samples. The Δ14C of green grass samples collected from two different clean zones were found to be 50‰ and 52‰, while the values of those collected from different polluted zones were 23‰, 7‰ and 15‰.

International audience; Due to their toxicity, persistence, and bioaccumulation, metals are important marine environment pollutants, especially in low renewal rate water such as the Mediterranean Sea, receiving a lot of untreated industrial waste. The impact of a phosphate fertilizer plant on the marine biota metal contamination was studied. Several types of organisms: crabs, mussels, patella and fish were collected from two areas of the Lebanese coast, one subjected to the impact of the plant and another away from it; samples were analyzed for Zn, U, Cr, V, Mn, Ni, Co, Cu, As, Cd and Pb by ICP-MS. Higher accumulation was in crabs, patella, and mussels. Fish accumulated principally Zn, Cu, and Cd; a difference was observed between species and tissues. Cytosol metal fractionation using size-exclusion LC-ICP-MS showed principally Pb, As, Co, and Mn in the low molecular weight fraction (\textless1.8 Da); Cd, Zn, and Cu in the metallothionein fraction (1.8–-18 k Da), and Ni in high molecular weight fraction (\textgreater20 kDa).

International audience; Ingestion of radionuclides through seafood intake is a one of the sources contributing to the internal effective dose in the human organism. In order to evaluate the internal exposure and potential risks due to 210Po and 210Pb associated with fish consumption, these radionuclides were measured in commonly consumed fish species from a clean area and an area subjected to the impact of a Lebanese phosphate fertilizer plant. The highest concentration of 210Pb was 98.7Bq/kg fresh weight while 210Po activity concentrations varied from 3.6Bq/kg to 140Bq/kg. A supplementary radiation exposure was detected; the highest committed effective dose due to 210Po and 210Pb was found to be 1110μSv/y and 450μSv/y, respectively. Moreover, the average mortality and morbidity risks due to the fish consuming were estimated. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.
