Structural mosaic of rare-earth tri-tellurides (RTe3) inlaid with non-classical structural motifs like the 2D-polytelluride square nets has attracted immense attention owing to their enigmatic chemical bonding, unconventional structure, and harboring charge density wave (CDW) ground states. The results reveal that the unusual structure of GdTe3 engenders a large anisotropic lattice thermal conductivity by concomitantly hampering the phonon propagation along parallel to the spark plasma sintering (SPS) pressing direction via chemical bonding hierarchy while facilitating phonon propagation along perpendicular to the SPS pressing direction through the metallic Te sheets and phason channel. The low lattice thermal conductivity is attributed to the strong vibrational anharmonicity caused by CDW-induced concerted local lattice distortions of both Gd-Te slab and Te square net, and the robust electron-phonon coupling. Catalytic conversion of CO2 into value‐added chemicals is necessary to mitigate the increasing global warming and energy‐related issues. The selective production of C2 or C2+ products by photoreduction of CO2 is a challenging task due to the sluggish kinetics of C─C coupling. Herein, the potential of a silver nanoparticle (Ag NP) incorporated metal‐organic framework (MOF), NU‐1000 is introduced, to harvest light and ease the uphill electron transfer. The growth of silver nanoparticles on thiol‐functionalized NU‐1000 is studied using the atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis. The C2 product formed using Ag@NU‐1000‐SH without any sacrificial agents is acetic acid, which is confirmed by 1H‐NMR and HRMS data. The catalyst displays a high acetate output of 293.58 µmolg−1h−1 with a selectivity of 79.4%. The XPS and DFT calculations evidence that the presence of the charge‐polarised states in the as‐synthesized catalyst act as asymmetric centers that favor the C─C coupling reaction. The combined experimental (in situ DRIFT spectroscopic studies) and theoretical calculations reveal that the C─C coupling takes place via the coupling of COOH*intermediates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A hallmark of typical structural transformations is an increase in symmetry upon heating due to entropic favourability. However, local symmetry breaking upon warming is recently evidenced in rare crystalline phases. Termed as emphanisis, the phenomenon implores exploration of fascinating thermodynamic nuances that drive unusual structural evolutions. Here, synchrotron X-ray total scattering measurements are presented on a Ruddlesden-Popper mixed halide perovskite, Cs 2 PbI 2 Cl 2 , which reveal signatures of emphanisis. The genesis of symmetry lowering upon heating is traced to a lone pair-driven cooperative local structural distortion composed of thermally actuated Pb off-centring and static Cl displacement. Mapping the thermal evolution of low-lying phonon modes with inelastic neutron scattering uncovers instances of mode hardening with picosecond lifetime and an intriguing soft mode at the X-point of the Brillouin zone-features conducive to ultralow thermal transport. Metavalent bonding has attracted immense interest owing to its capacity to impart a distinct property portfolio to materials for advanced functionality. Coupling metavalent bonding to lone pair expression can be an innovative way to propagate lattice anharmonicity from lone pair-induced local symmetry-breaking via the soft p -bonding electrons to achieve long-range phonon dampening in crystalline solids. Motivated by the shared chemical design pool for topological quantum materials and thermoelectrics, we based our studies on a three-dimensional (3D) topological insulator TlBiSe 2 that held prospects for 6 s 2 dual-cation lone pair expression and metavalent bonding to investigate if the proposed hypothesis can deliver a novel thermoelectric material. Herein, we trace the inherent phononic origin of low thermal conductivity in n-type TlBiSe 2 to dual 6 s 2 lone pair-induced intrinsic lattice shearing that strongly suppresses the lattice thermal conductivity to a low value of 1.1-0.4 Wm -1 K -1 between 300 and 715 K. Through synchrotron X-ray pair distribution function and first-principles studies, we have established that TlBiSe 2 exists not in a monomorphous R- 3 m structure but as a distribution of distorted configurations. Via a cooperative movement of the constituent atoms akin to a transverse shearing mode facilitated by metavalent bonding in TlBiSe 2 , the structure shuttles between various energetically accessible low-symmetry structures. The orbital interactions and ensuing multicentric bonding visualized through Wannier functions augment the long-range transmission of atomic displacement effects in TlBiSe 2 . With additional point-defect scattering, a κ latt of 0.3 Wm -1 K -1 was achieved in TlBiSeS with a maximum n-type thermoelectric figure of merit ( zT ) of ∼0.8 at 715 K.
