Search

The meaningful correlations between the zero-sound modes and the stiffness of the nuclear equation of state (EOS) are uncovered in nuclear matter with the relativistic mean-field theory. It is demonstrated that the high-density zero-sound modes merely exist in models with the stiff EOS. While the stiff EOS can be softened by including {\omega}-meson self-interactions (the {\omega}4 term), the weakened coupling of the {\omega}-meson self-interactions reignites the zero sound at high density. These results suggest that the high-density zero-sound modes can be used to probe the stiffness of the EOS at supra-normal densities. The implications and effects of zero sounds are also discussed in heavy ion collisions and neutron stars.

A relativistic Hartree-Fock Lagrangian including a chiral potential and nucleon polarisation is investigated in hopes of providing a better description of dense nuclear matter. We fully consider the contribution of the exchange Fock term to the energy and the self-energies, and in addition we investigate the nucleon's compositeness and finite size effects (confinement and form factors) and short range correlations modeled by a Jastrow ansatz. These effects are added step by step, such that their impact on the dense matter properties can be analysed in details. The parameters of the model are adjusted to reproduce fundamental properties related to the QCD theory at low energy, such as the chiral symmetry breaking, nucleon's quark substructure and Lattice-QCD predictions, as well as two empirical properties at saturation: the binding energy and the density. All other empirical parameters, e.g., symmetry energy and its slope, incompressibility modulus, effective mass, as well as spin-isospin Landau-Midgal parameter are predictions of the models and can be used to evaluate the gain of the different approximation schemes in describing nuclear properties. Bayesian statistics is employed in order to propagate parameter uncertainties into predictions for the nuclear matter properties. We show that the splitting of the effective Landau mass is largely influenced by the value of the $\rho^T$ coupling, and we show that the fit to the symmetry energy, which induces an increase of the coupling constant $g_\rho$ by about 20-25% compared to the case where it is fixed by the quark model, provides a very good EoS compatible with the present nuclear physics knowledge.

In this paper we discuss the combined effects on nuclear matter properties of the quark confinement mechanism in nucleon and of the chiral effective potential resulting from the spontaneous breaking of the chiral symmetry in nuclear matter. Based on the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio predictions, it is shown that the chiral potential acquires a specific scalar field cubic dependence, which contributes to the three-body interaction. We also discuss the constraints induced by Lattice-QCD on the model parameters governing the saturation properties. We introduce the term "QCD-connected parameters" for these quantities. We demonstrate that chiral symmetry and Lattice-QCD provide coherent constraints on the in-medium nuclear interaction, suggesting a fundamental origin of the saturation mechanism.

We investigate the question of the nature of compact stars, considering they may be neutron stars or hybrid stars containing a quark core, within the present constraints given by gravitational waves, radio-astronomy, X-ray emissions from millisecond pulsars and nuclear physics. A Bayesian framework is used to combine together all these constraints and to predict tidal deformabilities and radii for a 1.4~M$_\odot$ compact star. We find that present gravitation wave and radio-astronomy data favors stiff nucleonic EoS compatible with nuclear physics and that GW170817 waveform is best described for binary hybrid stars. Binary neutron stars with soft EoS could however not be totally excluded. In all cases, these %In addition, this data favor stiff quark matter, independently of the nuclear EoS, with a low value for the transition density ($n_\mathrm{tr}\in[0.18,0.35]~\mathrm{fm}^{-3}$). Combining these results with constraints from X-ray observation supports the existence $1.4$~M$_\odot$ mass hybrid star, with a radius predicted to be about $R_{1.4}=12.22(45)$~km., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

In view of the next LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA Observing period O4 (to start in Spring 2023), we address the question of the ability of the interferometers network to discriminate among different neutron stars equation of states better than what was possible with the observation of the binary neutron stars merger GW170817. We show that the observation of an event similar to GW170817 during O4 would allow to resolve the dimensionless effective tidal deformability $\tilde{\Lambda}$ within an uncertainty 7 times better than the one obtained in O2. Thanks to the expected increase in sensitivities, we show that any GW170817-like single-event within a distance of 100 Mpc would imply significantly improved constraints of the neutron stars equations of state. We also illustrate the important impact of the noise in the analysis of the signal, showing how it can impact the effective tidal deformability probability density function for large signal-to-noise ratio., Comment: 27 pages, 12 figures

A compressible liquid-drop model (CLDM) is used to correlate uncertainties associated with the properties of the neutron star (NS) crust with theoretical estimates of the uncertainties associated with the equation of state (EOS) of homogeneous neutron and nuclear matter. For the latter, we employ recent calculations based on Hamiltonians constructed using Chiral Effective Field theory. Fits to experimental nuclear masses are employed to constrain the CLDM further, and we find that they disfavor some of the Chiral Hamiltonians. The CLDM allows us to study the complex interplay between bulk, surface, curvature, and Coulomb contributions, and their impact on the NS crust. It also reveals how the curvature energy alters the correlation between the surface energy and the bulk symmetry energy. Our analysis quantifies how the uncertainties associated with the EOS of homogeneous matter implies significant uncertainties for the composition of the crust, its proton fraction, and the volume fraction occupied by nuclei. We find that the finite-size effects impact the crust composition, but have a negligible effect on the net isospin asymmetry of matter. The isospin asymmetry is largely determined by the bulk properties and the isospin dependence of the surface energy. The most significant uncertainties associated with matter properties in the densest regions of the crust, the precise location of the crust-core transition, are found to be strongly correlated with uncertainties associated with the Hamiltonians. By adopting a unified model to describe the crust and the core of NSs, we tighten the correlation between their global properties such as their mass-radius relationship, moment of inertia, crust thickness, and tidal deformability with uncertainties associated with the nuclear Hamiltonians.

We explore three different classes of relativistic approaches applied to the description of dense nuclear matter: a Walecka-type relativistic mean field model (RMF), an extension including an effective chiral potential (RMF-C) and a further extension with a chiral potential and confinement effects (RMF-CC). The parameters of the latter are controlled by fundamental properties such as the chiral potential, Lattice-QCD predictions, the quark sub-structure, as well as empirical properties at nuclear matter saturation. While these models are calibrated to the same properties at saturation density, they differ in their predictions as the density increases. We take care of parameter uncertainties and propagate them to our predictions for symmetric nuclear matter by employing Bayesian statistics. We show that RMF and RMF-C share common features as the density increases, while RMF-CC behaves differently. For instance, the scalar field at $6n_\textrm{sat}$ reaches $\sim 20$ MeV for RMF-CC while it is larger than $\sim 70$ MeV for RMF and RMF-C. Interestingly, we also show that, by fixing the $\rho$ coupling constant from the quark structure of the nucleon, these three models reproduce only half of the empirical symmetry energy., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

Gravitational wave-forms from coalescences of binary black hole systems and binary neutron star systems with low tidal effects can hardly be distinguished if the two systems have similar masses. In the absence of discriminating power based on the gravitational wave-forms, the classification of sources into binary neutron stars, binary black holes and mixed systems containing a black hole and a neutron star can only be unambiguous when assuming the standard model of stellar evolution and using the fact that there exists a mass gap between neutron stars and black holes. This approach is however limited by its own assumptions: for instance the 2.6 solar mass object detected in the GW190814 event remains unclassified, and models of new physics can introduce new compact objects, like primordial black holes, which may have masses in the same range as neutron stars. Then, without an electromagnetic counterpart (kilonova), classifying mergers of compact objects without mass gap criteria remains a difficult task, unless the source is close enough. In what follows we investigate a procedure to discriminate a model between binary neutron star merger and primordial binary black hole merger by using a Bayes factor in simulated wave-forms that we superimpose to realistic detector noise., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

Closed shell charmed hypernuclei $^5_{\Lambda_c}$Li, $^{17}_{\Lambda_c}$F, $^{41}_{\Lambda_c}$Sc, $^{57}_{\Lambda_c}$Cu, $^{133}_{\Lambda_c}$Sb and $^{209}_{\Lambda_c}$Bi are calculated within Hartree-Fock approach by using three different force sets derived from microscopic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock calculations of $\Lambda$ hypernuclei. Ground state properties (binding energies, $\Lambda_c$ separation energies, $\Lambda_c$ single particle energies and $\Lambda_c$ densities) of charmed nuclei are examined. Due to the Coulomb repulsion between protons and the $\Lambda_c$ baryon, charmed hypernuclei are most bound for $16\leq$A$\leq 41$, where $^{17}_{\Lambda_c}$F can be considered as an excellent candidate to measure charmed hypernuclei. The competition between the attractive nucleon-$\Lambda_c$ interaction and the Coulomb repulsion is discussed, and we compare $\Lambda$ and $\Lambda_c$ hypernuclei properties., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We suggest an extension to isospin asymmetric matter of the quarkyonic model from McLerran and Reddy. This extension allows us to construct the $\beta$-equilibrium between quarks, nucleons and leptons. The concept of the quarkyonic matter originates from the large number of color limit for which nucleons are the correct degrees of freedom near the Fermi surface -- reflecting the confining forces -- while deep inside the Fermi sea quarks naturally appear. In isospin asymmetric matter, we suggest that this new concept can be implemented within a global isoscalar relation between the shell gaps differentiating the nucleon and the quark sectors. In addition, we impose the conservation of the isospin-flavor asymmetry in the nucleon and the quark phases. Within this model, several quarkyonic stars are constructed on top of the SLy4 model for the nucleon sector, producing a bump in the sound speed, which implies that quarkyonic stars are systematically bigger and have a larger maximum mass than the associated neutron stars. They also predict lower proton fraction at $\beta$-equilibrium, which potentially quenches fast cooling in massive compact stars., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

The nuclear symmetry energy is a key quantity in nuclear (astro)physics. It describes the isospin dependence of the nuclear equation of state (EOS), which is commonly assumed to be almost quadratic. In this work, we confront this standard quadratic expansion of the EOS with explicit asymmetric nuclear-matter calculations based on a set of commonly used Hamiltonians including two- and three-nucleon forces derived from chiral effective field theory. We study, in particular, the importance of non-quadratic contributions to the symmetry energy, including the non-analytic logarithmic term introduced by Kaiser [Phys.~Rev.~C \textbf{91}, 065201 (2015)]. Our results suggest that the quartic contribution to the symmetry energy can be robustly determined from the various Hamiltonians employed, and we obtain 1.00(8) MeV (or 0.55(8) MeV for the potential part) at saturation density, while the logarithmic contribution to the symmetry energy is relatively small and model-dependent. We finally employ the meta-model approach to study the impact of the higher-order contributions on the neutron-star crust-core transition density, and find a small 5\% correction., Comment: 23 pages and 12 figures; Supplemental Material: 2 pages

The tidal deformability probability distribution extracted from GW170817 alone, or including multi-messenger information, is confronted to astrophysical and nuclear physics additional constraints within a semi-agnostic approach for the dense matter equation of state. We use Bayesian statistics to combine together low density nuclear physics data, such as the ab-initio predictions based on $\chi$EFT interactions or the isoscalar giant monopole resonance, and astrophysical constraints from neutron stars, such as the maximum mass of neutron stars or the probability density function of the tidal deformability $\tilde{\Lambda}$ obtained from the GW170817 event. The posteriors probability distribution functions are marginalized over several nuclear empirical parameters ($L_\textrm{sym}$, $K_\textrm{sym}$, $Q_\textrm{sat}$ and $Q_\textrm{sym}$), as well as over observational quantities such as the $1.4M_\odot$ radius $R_{1.4}$ and the pressure at twice the saturation density $P(2n_\textrm{sat})$. The correlations between $L_\textrm{sym}$ and $K_\textrm{sym}$ and between $K_\textrm{sat}$ and $Q_\textrm{sat}$ are also further analyzed. Tension is found between the posteriors: the first one is localized in the tidal deformability probability distribution itself, depending whether multi-messenger analysis is included or not, and the second one is between the observational data and the nuclear physics inputs. These tensions impact the predictions for $L_\textrm{sym}$, $K_\textrm{sym}$ and $R_{1.4}$ with centroids which differ by 2-3$\sigma$. Pulsating thermal X-ray emission from millisecond pulsars can be used to obtain constraints on the neutron star equation of state, but to date only five such sources have been identified. Of these five millisecond pulsars, only two have well constrained neutron star masses, which improve the determination of the radius via modelling of the X-ray waveform. We aim to find other millisecond pulsars that already have well constrained mass and distance measurements that show pulsed thermal X-ray emission in order to obtain tight constraints on the neutron star equation of state. The millisecond pulsar PSR~J1909--3744 has an accurately determined mass, M = 1.54$\pm$0.03 M$_\odot$ (1 $\sigma$ error) and distance, D = 1.07$\pm$0.04 kpc. We analysed {\em XMM-Newton} data of this 2.95 ms pulsar to identify the nature of the X-ray emission. We show that the X-ray emission from PSR~J1909--3744 appears to be dominated by thermal emission from the polar cap. Only a single component model is required to fit the data. The black-body temperature of this emission is kT=0.26\ud{0.03}{0.02} keV and we find a 0.2--10 keV un-absorbed flux of 1.1 $\times$ 10$^{-14}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ or an un-absorbed luminosity of 1.5 $\times$ 10$^{30}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Thanks to the previously determined mass and distance constraints of the neutron star PSR~J1909--3744, and its predominantly thermal emission, deep observations of this object with future X-ray facilities should provide useful constraints on the neutron star equation of state., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Gravitational waves from neutron-star mergers are expected to provide stringent constraints on the structure of neutron stars. At the same time, recent advances in nuclear theory have enabled reliable calculations of the low density equation of state using effective field theory based Hamiltonians and advanced techniques to solve the quantum many-body problem. In this paper, we address how the first observation of gravitational waves from GW170817 can be combined with modern calculations of the equation of state to extract useful insights about the equation of state of matter encountered inside neutron stars. This paper presents a new analysis of the thermal emission from the neutron star surface to constrain the dense matter equation of state. It is based on the use of a Markov-Chain Monte Carlo algorithm combined with an empirical parametrization of the equation of state, as well as the consistent treatment of seven neutron star quiescent low-mass X-ray binaries in globular clusters with well-measured distances. Previous analyses have indicated that the thermal emission of these neutron stars tends to prefer low neutron star radii, questioning basic knowledge from nuclear physics. We show that it is possible to reconcile the thermal emission analyses with nuclear physics knowledge, with or without including a prior on the slope of the symmetry energy $L_{\rm sym}$. We obtain radii of the order of about 12~km without worsening the fit statistic. With an empirical parametrization of the equation of state, we obtain the following values for the slope of the symmetry energy, its curvature $K_{\rm sym}$, and the isoscalar skewness parameter $Q_{\rm sat}$: $L_{\rm sym}=37.2^{+9.2}_{-8.9}$ MeV, $K_{\rm sym}=-85^{+82}_{-70}$ MeV, and $Q_{\rm sat}=318^{+673}_{-366}$ MeV. For the first time, we measure the values of the empirical parameters $K_{\rm sym}$ and $Q_{\rm sat}$. These values are only weakly impacted by our assumptions, such as the distances or the number of free empirical parameters, provided they are taken within a reasonable range. We also study the weak sensitivity of our results to the set of sources analyzed, and we identify a group of sources that dominates the constraints. The resulting masses and radii obtained are also discussed in the context of the independent constraints from GW 170817 and its electromagnetic counterpart, AT 2017gfo., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Multi-messenger observations of neutron star (NS) mergers have the potential to revolutionize nuclear astrophysics. They will improve our understanding of nucleosynthesis, provide insights about the equation of state (EOS) of strongly-interacting matter at high densities, and enable tests of the theory of gravity and of dark matter. Here, we focus on the EOS, where both gravitational waves (GWs) from neutron-star mergers and X-ray observations from space-based detectors such as NICER will provide more stringent constraints on the structure of neutron stars. Furthermore, recent advances in nuclear theory have enabled reliable calculations of the EOS at low densities using effective field theory based Hamiltonians and advanced techniques to solve the quantum many-body problem. A quantitative knowledge of the nuclear Equation of State (EoS) requires an accurate estimation of the uncertainties on the EoS parameters and their mutual correlations. Such correlations are empirically observed in a large set of EoS models by different authors, but they are not always fully understood. We show that some of these correlations can be interpreted from basic physical constraints imposed on a simple Taylor expansion of the binding energy around saturation density. In particular, we investigate the correlations among the following empirical parameters: the symmetry energy $E_{sym}$, the slope and curvature of the symmetry energy $L_{sym}$ and $K_{sym}$, and the curvature and skewness of the binding energy in symmetric matter $K_{sat}$ and $Q_{sat}$. The uncertainties on these correlations is estimated through analytical modelling as well as a meta-modelling analysis of the EoS subject to physical constraints. We show that a huge dispersion of the correlations among low order empirical parameters is induced by the unknown higher order empirical parameters, such as $K_{sym}$ (second order) and $Q_{sat}$ and $Q_{sym}$ (third order). We also propose an explanation of the reason why $Q_{sat}$ is weakly constrained by present experimental data. We conclude that selective observables on high order parameters, such as $K_{sym}$ and $Q_{sat}$, should be better determined before the present uncertainties on the EoS can be further reduced.

The correlation of the tidal polarizabilities $\Lambda_1$-$\Lambda_2$ for GW170817 is predicted by combining dense-matter equations of state (EOSs) that satisfy nuclear physics constraints with the chirp mass and mass asymmetry for this event. Our models are constrained by calculations of the neutron-matter EOS using chiral effective field theory Hamiltonians with reliable error estimates up to once or twice the nuclear saturation density. In the latter case, we find that GW170817 does not improve our understanding of the EOS. We contrast two distinct extrapolations to higher density: a minimal model (MM) which assumes that the EOS is a smooth function of density described by a Taylor expansion and a more general model parametrized by the speed of sound that admits phase transitions. This allows us to identify regions in the $\Lambda_1$-$\Lambda_2$ plots that could favor the existence of new phases of matter in neutron stars. We predict the combined tidal polarizability of the two neutron stars in GW170817 to be $80\le \tilde{\Lambda}\le 580$ ($280\le \tilde{\Lambda}\le 480$ for the MM), which is smaller than the range suggested by the LIGO-Virgo data analysis. Our analysis also shows that GW170817 requires a NS with $M=1.4M_\odot$ to have a radius $9.0

Multi-strange Ca, Sn and Pb hypernuclei with $\Lambda\Lambda$ pairing interaction are investigated within the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach. The unknown $\Lambda\Lambda$ pairing strength is calibrated to match with the maximal value for the prediction of the $\Lambda$ pairing gap in uniform matter for densities and isospin asymmetries equivalent to those existing in multi-$\Lambda$ hypernuclei. In this way, we provide an upper bound for the prediction of the $\Lambda$ pairing gap and its effects in hypernuclei. The condensation energy is predicted to be about 3~MeV as a maximum value, yielding small corrections on density distributions and shell structure. In addition, conditions on both Fermi energies and orbital angular momenta are expected to quench the nucleon-$\Lambda$ pairing for most of hypernuclei., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

The question of correlations among empirical equation of state (EoS) parameters constrained by nuclear observables is addressed in a fully empirical meta-modeling approach. A recently proposed meta-modeling for the nuclear EoS in nuclear matter, is augmented with a single finite size term to produce a minimal unified EoS functional able to describe the smooth part of the nuclear ground state properties. This meta-model can reproduce the predictions of a large variety of models, and interpolate continuously between them. The parameter space is sampled and filtered through the constraint of nuclear mass reproduction. We show that this simple analytical meta-modeling has a predictive power on masses, radii, and skins comparable to full HF or ETF calculations with realistic energy functionals. The covariance analysis on the posterior distribution shows that no physical correlation is present between the different EoS parameters. Concerning nuclear observables, a strong correlation between the slope of the symmetry energy and the neutron skin is observed, in agreement with previous studies., Comment: 14 pages, 17 figures, submitted to Phys. Employing a recently proposed metamodeling for the nucleonic matter equation of state we analyze neutron star global properties such as masses, radii, momentum of inertia, and others. The impact of the uncertainty on empirical parameters on these global properties is analyzed in a Bayesian statistical approach. Physical constraints, such as causality and stability, are imposed on the equation of state and different hypotheses for the direct Urca (dUrca) process are investigated. In addition, only metamodels with maximum masses above 2$M_\odot$ are selected. Our main results are the following: the equation of state exhibits a universal behavior against the dUrca hypothesis under the condition of charge neutrality and $\beta$-equilibrium; neutron stars, if composed exclusively of nucleons and leptons, have a radius of 12.7$\pm$0.4~km for masses ranging from 1 up to 2$M_\odot$; a small radius lower than 11~km is very marginally compatible with our present knowledge of the nuclear empirical parameters; and finally, the most important empirical parameters which are still affected by large uncertainties and play an important role in determining the radius of neutrons stars are the slope and curvature of the symmetry energy ($L_{sym}$ and $K_{sym}$) and, to a lower extent, the skewness parameters ($Q_{sat/sym}$).

A metamodeling for the nucleonic equation of state (EOS), inspired from a Taylor expansion around the saturation density of symmetric nuclear matter, is proposed and parameterized in terms of the empirical parameters. The present knowledge of nuclear empirical parameters is first reviewed in order to estimate their average values and associated uncertainties, and thus defining the parameter space of the metamodeling. They are divided into isoscalar and isovector type, and ordered according to their power in the density expansion. The goodness of the metamodeling is analyzed against the predictions of the original models. In addition, since no correlation among the empirical parameters is assumed a priori, all arbitrary density dependences can be explored, which might not be accessible in existing functionals. Spurious correlations due to the assumed functional form are also removed. This meta-EOS allows direct relations between the uncertainties on the empirical parameters and the density dependence of the nuclear equation of state and its derivatives, and the mapping between the two can be done with standard Bayesian techniques. A sensitivity analysis shows that the more influential empirical parameters are the isovector parameters $L_{sym}$ and $K_{sym}$, and that laboratory constraints at super-saturation densities are essential to reduce the present uncertainties. The present metamodeling for the EOS for nuclear matter is proposed for further applications in neutron stars and supernova matter.

Finite-temperature Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory using Skyrme interactions and Relativistic Hartree-Fock effective Lagrangians, predicts $^{48}$Ni as being a possible candidate for the finite temperature pairing re-entrance phenomenon. For this proton-drip-line nucleus, proton resonant states are expected to contribute substantially to pairing correlations and the two predicted critical temperatures are $T_{c1}\sim 0.08-0.2$~MeV and $T_{c2}\sim 0.7-0.9$~MeV. It is also shown that pairing re-entrance modifies the proton single particle energies around the Fermi level, as well as occupation numbers, and quasi-particle levels. Recent applications of the M3Y-type semi-realistic interaction to the nuclear mean-field approaches are presented: (i) Prediction of magic numbers and (ii) isotope shifts of nuclei with magic proton numbers. The problem of the determination of the nuclear surface and surface symmetry energy is addressed in the framework of the Extended Thomas Fermi (ETF) approximation using Skyrme functionals. We propose an analytical model for the density profiles with variationally determined diffuseness parameters. For the case of symmetric nuclei, the resulting ETF functional can be exactly integrated, leading to an analytical formula expressing the surface energy as a function of the couplings of the energy functional. The importance of non-local terms is stressed, which cannot be simply deduced from the local part of the functional. In the case of asymmetric nuclei, we propose an approximate expression for the diffuseness and the surface energy. These quantities are analytically related to the parameters of the energy functional. In particular, the influence of the different equation of state parameters can be explicitly quantified. Detailed analyses of the different energy components (local/non-local, isoscalar/isovector, surface/curvature and higher order) are also performed. Our analytical solution of the ETF integral improves over previous models and leads to a precision better than 200 keV per nucleon in the determination of the nuclear binding energy for dripline nuclei., Comment: 27 pages, 18 figures, submitted to PRC

A large number of hypernuclei, where a considerable fraction of nucleons is replaced by strange baryons, and even pure hyperonic species are expected to be bound. Though, the hypernuclear landscape remains largely unknown because of scarce constraints on the $NY$ and $YY$ interactions. We want to estimate the number of potentially bound hypernuclei. In order to evaluate realistic error bars within the theoretical uncertainties associated to the spherical mean-field approach, and the present information from already synthetized hypernuclei on the $N-Y$ and $Y-Y$ channels, we limit ourselves to purely $\Lambda$-hypernuclei, to magic numbers of $\Lambda$'s (for Z $\leq$ 120 and $\Lambda \leq$70), and to even-even-even systems. We consider a density functional approach adjusted to microscopic Bruckner-Hartree-Fock calculations, where the $\Lambda\Lambda$ term is corrected in a phenomenological way, to reproduce present experimental constraints. The number of bound even-even-even $\Lambda$-hypernuclei is estimated to 491680 $\pm$ 34400. This relatively low uncertainty is due to the fact that the well constrained low density and highly unconstrained high density behavior of the energy functional turn out to be largely decoupled. Results in $\Lambda$-hypernuclei appear to be almost independent of the choice for the high-density part of the $\Lambda\Lambda$ interaction. The location of the $\Lambda$-hyperdriplines is also evaluated. Significant deviations from Iron-Nickel elements can be found for $\Lambda$-hypernuclei with the largest binding energy per baryon. Proton, neutron and $\Lambda$-hyperon magicity evolution and triple magic $\Lambda$-hypernuclei are studied. The heat capacity of neutron matter is studied over the range of densities and temperatures prevailing in neutron-star crusts, allowing for the transition to a superfluid phase at temperatures below some critical temperature $T_{sf}$ and including the transition to the classical limit. Finite temperature Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations (FTHFB) are solved and compared to existing approximate expressions. In particular, the formula given by Levenfish and Yakovlev is found to reproduce the numerical results with a high degree of accuracy for temperatures $T\leq T_{sf}$. In the non-superfluid phase, $T\geq T_{sf}$, the linear approximation is valid only at temperature $T\ll T_{{\rm F} n}$ ($T_{{\rm F} n}$ being the Fermi temperature of the neutron gas) which is rarely the case in the shallow layers of the neutron star's crust. A non-perturbative interpolation between the quantal and the classical regimes is proposed here. The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will make ground breaking discoveries in pulsar science. In this chapter we outline the SKA surveys for new pulsars, as well as how we will perform the necessary follow-up timing observations. The SKA's wide field-of-view, high sensitivity, multi-beaming and sub-arraying capabilities, coupled with advanced pulsar search backends, will result in the discovery of a large population of pulsars. These will enable the SKA's pulsar science goals (tests of General Relativity with pulsar binary systems, investigating black hole theorems with pulsar-black hole binaries, and direct detection of gravitational waves in a pulsar timing array). Using SKA1-MID and SKA1-LOW we will survey the Milky Way to unprecedented depth, increasing the number of known pulsars by more than an order of magnitude. SKA2 will potentially find all the Galactic radio-emitting pulsars in the SKA sky which are beamed in our direction. This will give a clear picture of the birth properties of pulsars and of the gravitational potential, magnetic field structure and interstellar matter content of the Galaxy. Targeted searches will enable detection of exotic systems, such as the ~1000 pulsars we infer to be closely orbiting Sgr A*, the supermassive black hole in the Galactic Centre. In addition, the SKA's sensitivity will be sufficient to detect pulsars in local group galaxies. To derive the spin characteristics of the discoveries we will perform live searches, and use sub-arraying and dynamic scheduling to time pulsars as soon as they are discovered, while simultaneously continuing survey observations. Within the context of Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory, we study the behavior of superfluid Fermi systems when they pass from a small to a large container. Such systems can be now realized thanks to recent progress in experimental techniques. It will allow to better understand pairing properties at overflow and in general in rapidly varying external potentials.

The magnetic dipole (M1) and the Gamow-Teller (GT) excitations of finite nuclei have been studied in a fully self-consistent Hartree-Fock (HF) plus random phase approximation (RPA) approach by using a Skyrme energy density functional with spin and spin-isospin densities. To this end, we adopt the extended SLy5st interaction which includes spin-density dependent terms and stabilize nuclear matter with respect to spin instabilities. The effect of the spin-density dependent terms is examined in both the mean field and the spin-flip excited state calculations. The numerical results show that those terms give appreciable repulsive contributions to the M1 and GT response functions of finite nuclei., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

We explore the ground-state properties of nuclear clusters embedded in a gas of nucleons with the help of Skyrme-Hartree-Fock microscopic calculations. Two alternative representations of clusters are introduced, namely coordinate-space and energy-space clusters. We parameterize their density profiles in spherical symmetry in terms of basic properties of the energy density functionals used and propose an analytical, Woods-Saxon density profile whose parameters depend, not only on the composition of the cluster, but also of the nucleon gas. We study the clusters' energies with the help of the local-density approximation, validated through our microscopic results. We find that the volume energies of coordinate-space clusters are determined by the saturation properties of matter, while the surface energies are strongly affected by the presence of the gas. We conclude that both the density profiles and the cluster energies are strongly affected by the gas and discuss implications for the nuclear EoS and related perspectives. Our study provides a simple, but microscopically motivated modeling of the energetics of clusterized matter at subsaturation densities, for direct use in consequential applications of astrophysical interest., Comment: 20 pages, incl. 12 figures

The measurements of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (GMR), also called the breathing mode, are analyzed with respect to their constraints on the quantity $M_c$, e.g. the density dependence of the nuclear incompressibility around the so-called crossing density $\rho_c$=0.1 fm$^{-3}$. The correlation between the centroid of the GMR, $E_\mathrm{GMR}$, and $M_c$ is shown to be more accurate than the one between $E_\mathrm{GMR}$ and the incompressibility modulus at saturation density, $K_\infty$, giving rise to an improved determination on the nuclear equation of state. The relationship between $M_c$ and $K_\infty$ is given as a function of the skewness parameter $Q_\infty$ associated to the density dependence of the equation of state. The large variation of $Q_\infty$ among different energy density functionnals directly impacts the knowledge of $K_\infty$: a better knowledge of $Q_\infty$ is required to deduce more accurately $K_\infty$. Using the Local Density Approximation, a simple and accurate expression relating $E_\mathrm{GMR}$ and the quantity $M_c$ is derived and successfully compared to the fully microscopic predictions., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Exotic and drip-line nuclei as well as nuclei immersed in a low density gas of neutrons in the outer crust of neutron stars are systematically investigated with respect to their neutron pairing properties. This is done using Skyrme density-functional and different pairing forces such as a density-dependent contact interaction and a separable form of a finite-range Gogny interaction. Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov and BCS theories are compared. It is found that neutron pairing is reduced towards the drip line while overcast by strong shell effects. Furthermore resonances in the continuum can have an important effect counterbalancing the tendency of reduction and leading to a persistence of pairing at the drip line. It is also shown that in these systems the difference between HFB and BCS approaches can be qualitatively large.

Dense matter as it can be found in core-collapse supernovae and neutron stars is expected to exhibit different phase transitions which impact the matter composition and the equation of state, with important consequences on the dynamics of core-collapse supernova explosion and on the structure of neutron stars. In this paper we will address the specific phenomenology of two of such transitions, namely the crust-core solid-liquid transition at sub-saturation density, and the possible strange transition at super-saturation density in the presence of hyperonic degrees of freedom. Concerning the neutron star crust-core phase transition at zero and finite temperature, it will be shown that, as a consequence of the presence of long-range Coulomb interactions, a clusterized phase is expected which is not accessible in the grand-canonical ensemble. A specific quasi-particle model will be introduced and some quantitative results relevant for the supernova dynamics will be shown. The opening of hyperonic degrees of freedom at higher densities corresponding to the neutron stars core also modifies the equation of state. The phase diagram of a system constituted of neutrons, protons, $\Lambda$-hyperons and electrons is evaluated in the mean-field approximation in the complete three-dimensional space given by the baryon, lepton and strange charge. It is shown that the phase diagram at sub-saturation densities is strongly affected by the electromagnetic interaction, while it is almost independent of the electric charge at supra-saturation density. As a consequence, stellar matter under the condition of strangeness equilibrium is expected to experience a first as well as a second-order strangeness-driven phase transition at high density, while the liquid-gas phase transition is expected to be quenched. Applying the semi-realistic $NN$ interactions that include realistic tensor force to the Hartree-Fock calculations, we investigate tensor-force effects on the single-particle levels in the Ca isotopes. The semi-realistic interaction successfully describes the experimental difference between $\varepsilon(p1s_{1/2})$ and $\varepsilon(p0d_{3/2})$ (denoted by $\mathit{\Delta}\varepsilon_{13}$) both at $^{40}$Ca and $^{48}$Ca, confirming importance of the tensor force. The tensor force plays a role in the $N$-dependence of $\mathit{\Delta}\varepsilon_{13}$ also in neutron-rich Ca nuclei. While the $p1s_{1/2}$-$p0d_{3/2}$ inversion is predicted in heavier Ca nuclei as in $^{48}$Ca, it takes place only in $N\geq 46$, delayed by the tensor force. We further investigate possibility of proton bubble structure in Ar, which is suggested by the $p1s_{1/2}$-$p0d_{3/2}$ inversion in $^{48}$Ca and more neutron-rich Ca nuclei, by the spherical Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov calculations. Even with the inversion at $^{48}$Ca the pair correlation prohibits prominent bubble distribution in $^{46}$Ar. Bubble in Ar is unlikely also near neutron drip line because either of unboundness or of deformation. Only one third of the nucleons in $^{208}$Pb occupy the saturation density area. Consequently nuclear observables related to average properties of nuclei, such as masses or radii, constrain the equation of state (EOS) not at saturation density but rather around the so-called crossing density, localised close to the mean value of the density of nuclei: $\rho\simeq$0.11 fm$^{-3}$. This provides an explanation for the empirical fact that several EOS quantities calculated with various functionals cross at a density significantly lower than the saturation one. The third derivative M of the energy at the crossing density is constrained by the giant monopole resonance (GMR) measurements in an isotopic chain rather than the incompressibility at saturation density. The GMR measurements provide M=1110 $\pm$ 70 MeV (6% uncertainty), whose extrapolation gives K$_\infty$=230 $\pm$ 40 MeV (17% uncertainty)., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Based on a microscopic description of superfluidity in overflowing nuclear systems, it is shown that continuum coupling plays an important role in the suppression, the persistence and the reentrance of pairing. In such systems, the structure of the drip-line nucleus determines the suppression and the persistence of superfluidity. The reentrance of pairing with increasing temperature leads to additional critical temperatures between the normal and superfluid phases.

We analyse how the structure of the inner curst is influenced by the pairing correlations. The inner-crust matter, formed by nuclear clusters immersed in a superfluid neutron gas and ultra-relativistic electrons, is treated in the Wigner-Seitz approximation. The properties of the Wigner-Seitz cells, i.e., their neutron to proton ratio and their radius at a given baryonic density, are obtained from the energy minimization at beta equilibrium. To obtain the binding energy of baryonic matter we perform Skyrme-HFB calculations with zero-range density-dependent pairing forces of various intensities. We find that the Wigner-Seitz cells have much smaller numbers of protons compared to previous calculations. For the dense cells the binding energy of the configurations with small proton numbers do not converge to a well-defined minimum value which precludes the determination of their structure. We show that for these cells there is a significant underestimation of the binding energy due to the boundary conditions at the border of the cells imposed through the Wigner-Seitz approximation., Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures

Cross sections for ($p,t$) two-neutron transfer reactions are calculated in the one-step zero-range distorted-wave Born approximation for the tin isotopes $^{124}$Sn and $^{136}$Sn and for incident proton energies from 15 to 35 MeV. Microscopic quasiparticle random-phase approximation form factors are provided for the reaction calculation and phenomenological optical potentials are used in both the entrance and the exit channels. Three different surface/volume mixings of a zero-range density-dependent pairing interaction are employed in the microscopic calculations and the sensitivity of the cross sections to the different mixings is analyzed. Since absolute cross sections cannot be obtained within our model, we compare the positions of the diffraction minima and the shapes of the angular distributions. No differences are found in the position of the diffraction minima for the reaction $^{124}$Sn($p,t$)$^{122}$Sn. On the other side, the angular distributions obtained for the reaction $^{136}$Sn($p,t$)$^{134}$Sn with surface and mixed interactions differ at large angles for some values of the incident proton energy. For this reaction, we compare the ratios of the cross sections associated to the ground state and the first excited state transitions. Differences among the three different theoretical predictions are found and they are more important at the incident proton energy of 15 MeV. As a conclusion, we indicate ($p,t$) two-neutron transfer reactions with very neutron-rich Sn isotopes and at proton energies around 15 MeV as good experimental cases where the surface/volume mixing of the pairing interaction may be probed.

The role of superfluidity in the incompressibility and in the symmetry energy is studied in nuclear matter and finite nuclei. Several pairing interactions are used: surface, mixed and isovector dependent. Pairing has a small effect on the nuclear matter incompressibility at saturation density, but the effects are significant at lower densities. The pairing effect on the centroid energy of the isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (GMR) is also evaluated for Pb and Sn isotopes by using a microscopic constrained-HFB approach, and found to change at most by 10% the nucleus incompressibility $K_A$. It is shown by using the Local Density Approximation (LDA) that most of the pairing effect on the GMR centroid come from the low-density nuclear surface., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

The low-momentum interaction $V_{\text{low-k}}$ derived from realistic models of the nucleon-nucleon interaction is presented in a separable form. This separable force is supported by a contact interaction in order to achieve the saturation properties of symmetric nuclear matter. Bulk properties of nuclear matter and finite nuclei are investigated for the separable form of $V_{\text{low-k}}$ and two different parameterizations of the contact term. The accuracy of the separable force in Hartree-Fock calculations with respect to the original interaction $V_{\text{low-k}}$ is discussed. For a cutoff parameter $\Lambda$ of 2 fm$^{-1}$ a representation by a rank 2 separable force yields a sufficient accuracy, while higher ranks are required for larger cut-off parameters. The resulting separable force is parameterized in a simple way to allow for an easy application in other nuclear structure calculations., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

We discuss the thermalisation process of the neutron stars crust described by solving the heat transport equation with a microscopic input for the specific heat of baryonic matter. The heat equation is solved with initial conditions specific to a rapid cooling of the core. To calculate the specific heat of inner crust baryonic matter, i.e., nuclear clusters and unbound neutrons, we use the quasiparticle spectrum provided by the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach at finite temperature. In this framework we analyse the dependence of the crust thermalisation on pairing properties and on cluster structure of inner crust matter. It is shown that the pairing correlations reduce the crust thermalisation time by a very large fraction.
