Warming seas, marine heatwaves, and habitat degradation are increasingly widespread phenomena affecting marine biodiversity, yet our understanding of their broader impacts is largely derived from collective insights from independent localized studies. Insufficient systematic broadscale monitoring limits our understanding of the true extent of these impacts and our capacity to track these at scales relevant to national policies and international agreements. Using an extensive time series of co-located reef fish community structure and habitat data spanning 12 years and the entire Australian continent, we found that reef fish community responses to changing temperatures and habitats are dynamic and widespread but regionally patchy. Shifts in composition and abundance of the fish community often occurred within 2 years of environmental or habitat change, although the relative importance of these two mechanisms of climate impact tended to differ between tropical and temperate zones. The clearest of these changes on temperate and subtropical reefs were temperature related, with responses measured by the reef fish thermal index indicating reshuffling according to the thermal affinities of species present. On low latitude coral reefs, the community generalization index indicated shifting dominance of habitat generalist fishes through time, concurrent with changing coral cover. Our results emphasize the importance of maintaining local ecological detail when scaling up datasets to inform national policies and global biodiversity targets. Scaled-up ecological monitoring is needed to discriminate among increasingly diverse drivers of large-scale biodiversity change and better connect presently disjointed systems of biodiversity observation, indicator research, and governance.

Reef Life Survey (RLS) provides a new model for ecological monitoring through training experienced recreational divers in underwater visual census methods to the level of skilled scientists. Detail produced is similar to that of programs with professional scientific teams, at low cost to allow global coverage. RLS differs from most other citizen science initiatives in its emphasis on rigorous training and data quality rather than open participation, selectively involving the most skilled and committed members. Volunteers participate primarily because they appreciate the close relationship with scientists, other divers, and managers, and see their efforts directly contributing to improved environmental outcomes. RLS works closely with Australian management agencies, scheduling annual events at core monitoring sites associated with 10 inshore marine protected areas Australia-wide. Surveys of 12 offshore Australian Marine Parks (AMPs) are realized through 2-4 week voyages in a sailing catamaran crewed by volunteers. Across the AMP network, RLS surveys have quantified densities of fishes, mobile invertebrates, macroalgae and corals at 350 shallow coral reef sites (180 sites surveyed on two or more occasions), providing an understanding of (i) population changes amongst threatened species including sea snakes, (ii) responses of fish and invertebrate populations following fisheries closures, (iii) ecosystem-wide impacts of marine heat-waves, and (iv) the extent that AMPs spanning the network comprehensively encompass national coral reef biodiversity. This scientist/volunteer/manager collaboration could be greatly expanded globally (presently 3537 sites in 53 countries).

This article defines blogs and distinguishes them from other websites. A brief history of the blog format is included along with an exploration of the growth and acceptance of blogs as a professional information reference source for librarians. The authors review the literature on blogs and recommend a set of criteria for determining the value of blogs as a professional development tool. They also review examples of web logs meeting the screening criteria.

This research uses categorization theory to understand the dynamics of vertical brand extensions. Two experiments measure consumer evaluations of both core brands and vertical brand extensions, including the effects of direction of brand extension (step-up vs. step-down) and distancing techniques (close, medium, far). The impact of product concept (function-oriented vs. prestige-oriented brands) is examined, with Study 1 using cars (Lexus, Toyota), and Study 2 using wristwatches (Rolex, Timex). Findings from these two studies indicate that the introduction of any vertical brand extension (either step-up or step-down) has a negative impact on consumer evaluation of the core brand. However, increasing the perceived distance between the core brand and the brand extension, via the use of graphical and linguistic distancing techniques, reduces this negative impact on the core brand. Increased distancing also benefits step-up brand extension evaluations, but step-down brand extensions are evaluated less favorably when distancing techniques are used.

The nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) oxaprozin and piroxicam have long elimination half-lives (t 1/2 approximately 55 hours), permitting once-daily dose regimens. The protein-binding characteristics of these drugs, however, vary widely. This study examines the effect of these binding differences on the drugs' disposition kinetics at steady state. A total of 52 participants (26 young healthy volunteers, and 26 elderly osteoarthritic patients, 15 men and 37 women (2 of them poor metabolizers of debrisoquine [CYP2D6]) completed the two-period, two-treatment, randomized, single-dose and 21-day, once-daily multiple-dose, cross-over study. Doses of oxaprozin and piroxicam were 1,200 mg once daily and 20 mg once daily, respectively. Mean single-dose kinetic parameters of oxaprozin versus piroxicam did not differ more than +/-14% (t1/2, 53.0 versus 57.4 hours; apparent oral clearance adjusted for 70-kg body weight [Clpo], 0.139 versus 0.121 L/hr; apparent volume of distribution adjusted for 70-kg body weight [Vd/F]; 10.2 L versus 9.13 L). Protein binding was plasma-concentration dependent with oxaprozin (range, 10-400 mg/L) but not with piroxicam (range, 1-30 mg/ L). Steady-state conditions were established within 3 days with oxaprozin but took almost 12 days with piroxicam. Compared with the single-dose values, steady-state Clpo (Clpo,ss) and Vd/F of total drug increased with oxaprozin by almost 127% but remained within +/-10% with piroxicam. Post-steady-state apparent t 1/2 of the total and unbound drugs of approximately 62 hours were similarly prolonged with piroxicam but differed substantially with oxaprozin (50.6 hours [total drug] versus 23.8 hours [unbound drug]). Single dose Clpo (Clpo,sd) values of both NSAIDs were significantly correlated in the study populations. With both NSAIDs, Clpo in the two poor metabolizers of debrisoquine was within +/-20% of mean values for the population. Clinically important age- and gender-dependent decreases were not observed in the weight-adjusted, Clpo,sd or Vd/F values of the total drug for either NSAID. Clearances of the two NSAIDs were significantly correlated, suggesting that a common P450 isozyme (most likely CYP2C9, in that piroxicam is a known substrate of this isozyme) may be at least partly involved in the oxidative metabolism of these NSAIDs.

F YOU HAVE EVER given nursing care to a young, hospitalized child, no doubt you have wondered, "What can I do that will help him withstand all that is happening to him?" Many times we are giving more emotional support than we realize. Yet, at other times, because we underestimate what is happening, we omit an important element of emotional support. Some theories and principles concerning the development of the child's personality have certain implications for the nurse's role in giving emotional support. By identifying some of the implications of this knowledge we can relate them in tangible ways to the effective emotional support the nurse gives the young hospitalized child.
