For decades, researchers have suggested the existence of a bilingual cognitive advantage, especially in tasks involving executive functions such as inhibition, shifting, and updating. Recently an increasing number of studies have questioned whether or not bilingualism results in a change in executive functions based on conflicted data reported in the literature. This study compared the performance of third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade bilingual and monolingual children on attentional and cognitive tasks. The participants were 61 monolingual and 74 bilingual children (M:114,6 months; S.D.: 8,48 months). Participants were tested on two versions of the attention task (ANT), with and without social stimuli, and in some tests investigating working memory and receptive vocabulary tests. Additionally, we examined the sociocultural status and the reasoning abilities of the participants' families. The results show how bilingualism and the sociocultural index affect attentional networks when the task uses social stimuli or has no social value. When the task implies non-social stimuli, only the sociocultural index shows a difference between groups in the executive conflict network. Examining the relationships between the different variables that we considered, it is possible to note a positive relationship between the sociocultural index and executive control with social stimuli and a negative relationship between the alert network with non-social stimuli, both already documented in the literature (Schibli et al.., 2017). Interestingly, neither the sociocultural index nor the social attentional networks correlate with working memory functioning. Therefore, even if more investigations are required, the differences in social contexts mainly affect attentional functions.

Klinefelter syndrome (KS) is a genetic anomaly involving the presence of one or more supernumerary X chromosomes in male individuals. In the cognitive profile of these individuals, strengths are found in nonverbal abilities, whereas weaknesses are observed in executive function, language, and academic performance. Our study is based on a comparison between eight children diagnosed with KS (47,XXY) (age range: 9-13 years; IQ range: 80-123), with no delay in language development, and eight typically developing (TD) controls. We explored a range of high-level language competencies and Theory of Mind (ToM) in addition to basic language competency. High-level language competencies were assessed by a battery that measures pragmatic language skills and a metaphor comprehension test (MCT). To assess ToM, we administered the corresponding subtest of the NEPSY II. Basic language competence was assessed by the NEPSY II Comprehension of Instructions subtest. Although basic language performance did not differentiate the individuals with KS from the TD controls, relevant differences appeared in some of the high-level language competencies as well as in the ToM task. All tasks in which the individuals with KS performed less well were characterized by complex inferential processes. Some possible clinical and educational implications are discussed.

Aging seems to be associated with impairment of attentional network functioning. It is not known whether social information can modulate this age-related decline. We used three variants of Attention Network test to examine the age-related decline of attentional effects in response to stimuli with and without social-cognitive content. Three groups of younger, middle-aged, and older participants performed the ANT, using fish, drawings, or photographs of faces looking to the left or right as target and flanker stimuli. The results showed that both executive attention and alerting were more resistant to the age-related decline with social stimuli and that orienting attention scores showed a progressive increase with age in the presence of this kind of stimuli. These findings underline the importance of social information in modulating and contrasting the age-related decline and support the status of human faces as a special class of visual stimuli for the human attentional systems.

In this study we explored metaphor and idiom competencies in two clinical populations, children with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) and children with Klinefelter syndrome (KS), (age range: 9&ndash, 12), compared to typically developing (TD) children of the same age. These three groups were tested with two multiple-choice tests assessing idiom comprehension through iconic and verbal alternatives and a metaphor comprehension test composed of novel, physical-psychological metaphors, requesting verbal explanations. To these instruments, another test was added, assessing basic sentence comprehension. Performances on the different linguistic tasks were examined by means of discriminant analysis which showed that idiom comprehension had a very small weight in distinguishing children with ASD from TD controls, whereas metaphor explanation did distinguish them. This study suggests that figurative language comprehension is not a &ldquo, core deficit&rdquo, per se in individuals with ASD. Only when the task requires to explicitly construct and explain a semantic mapping between the two terms of a metaphor does the performance of children with ASD significantly deviate from the typical population. These results are interpreted in terms of a difficulty in children with ASD and KS with complex cognitive and linguistic processes and also in relation with clinical assessment.

Until the first decade of the current millennium, the literature on metaphor comprehension highlighted typical difficulties in children with high-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). More recently, some scholars have devised special programs for enhancing the capability of understanding metaphors in these children. This article presents a case study based on a treatment aiming at enhancing novel metaphor comprehension in a high-functioning child with ASD. M.M., a pseudoacronym for an 8;10 year-old boy, diagnosed with high-functioning ASD, was first assessed with a metaphor comprehension test. This testing (at time T0) highlighted a rigid refusal of metaphors and a marked tendency toward literal interpretation. A baseline treatment (8 sessions of 45-60 minutes each, twice a week) was implemented, based on a series of recognition, denomination and emotion comprehension activities. MM’s metaphor comprehension was assessed a second time (T1), followed by the experimental treatment (same duration and frequency as the first one), specifically focused on metaphor comprehension. Finally, a third assessment of metaphor comprehension took place (T2), followed by a last assessment four months later (follow-up, T3).The comparison between the performances at the metaphor comprehension test across the four assessments, from T0 to T3, showed that the baseline treatment produced no effect at all, whereas a significant improvement appeared at T2, just after the experimental treatment, later confirmed at the follow up. Both quantitative and qualitative results showed an evident improvement in the way M.M. handled the semantic issues posed by the metaphors of the test, in line with the strategies he was taught during the treatment

In this study we used a semantic battery assessing the conceptual, lexical, and metacognitive level in semantic relationships to predict expressive lexicon in preschool children with typical and atypical language development. Our regression analyses showed that the tests of our semantic battery altogether accounted for 24% of variance in expressive lexicon after controlling for age and phonological short-term memory. The ability to memorize picture-cue/word pairs that were linked by taxonomic relations made a unique contribution to the expressive lexicon, and was a reliable marker of delayed expressive vocabulary in a group of children with specific language impairment.

In this single case study we analyze the treatment focused on arithmetical text problems with a multiplicative structure that was offered to Lu., a 7.8-years-old child who had been diagnosed with mild mental retardation and a genetic anomaly (cariotype 47 XYY) associated with learning disabilities and language delay. Our main aim is to analyze the lon- gitudinal learning profile of our target child in order to identify both the major sources of difficulties interfering with ef- fective learning and the internal cognitive constructions linked to his acquisitions. We deploy qualitative observations tracking the longitudinal changes in the procedures that Lu. applied to the tasks and in adult-child interactive talk. We identified three types of cognitive difficulties interfering with effective learning of solving arithmetical text problems: sensitivity to interference effects in verbal working memory, difficulties with complex coordination of sequential actions, slow automatization. The longitudinal analysis of the adult-child interactive talk showed that the child's talk changed from being almost exclusively focused on giving simple answers, to producing descriptions and anticipation of computations or procedures. It is likely that this use of language provided Lu. with an abstract representational format that triggered an in- ternal reorganization and conceptualisation of the acquired problem-solving procedures.

The present case study investigates the effects of a cognitive training of verbal working memory that was proposed for Davide, a fourteen-year-old boy diagnosed with mild intellectual disability. The program stimulated attention, inhibition, switching, and the ability to engage either in verbal dual tasks or in producing inferences after the content of a short passage had been encoded in episodic memory. Key elements in our program included (1) core training of target cognitive mechanisms; (2) guided practice emphasizing concrete strategies to engage in exercises; and (3) a variable amount of adult support. The study explored whether such a complex program produced near transfer effects on an untrained dual task assessing verbal working memory and whether effects on this and other target cognitive mechanisms (i.e., attention, inhibition and switching) were long-lasting and produced far transfer effects on cognitive flexibility. The effects of the intervention program were investigated with a research design consisting of four subsequent phases lasting eight or ten weeks, each preceded and followed by testing. There was a control condition (phase 1) in which the boy received, at home, a stimulation focused on the visuospatial domain. Subsequently, there were three experimental training phases, in which stimulation in the verbal domain was first focused on attention and inhibition (phase 2a), then on switching and simple working memory tasks (phase 2b), then on complex working memory tasks (phase 3). A battery of neuropsychological tests was administered before and after each training phase and seven months after the conclusion of the intervention. The main finding was that Davide changed from being incapable of addressing the dual task request of the listening span test in the initial assessment to performing close to the normal limits of a thirteen-year-old boy in the follow-up assessment with this test, when he was fifteen years old.

For decades, research on children's literacy has been dominated by questions of how children learn to read. Especially among Anglophone scholars, cognitive and psycholinguistic research on reading has been the only approach to studying written language education. Echoing this, debates on methods of teaching children to read have long dominated the educational scene. This book presents an alternative view. In recent years, writing has emerged as a central aspect of becoming literate. Research in cognitive psychology has shown that writing is a highly complex activity involving a degree of planning unknown in everyday conversational uses of language. At the same time, developmental studies have revealed that when young children are asked to "write," they show a surprisingly sophisticated understanding of the representational constraints of alphabetic writing systems. They show this understanding long before they can read conventional writing on their own. The rich structure of meanings involved in the word text provided the glue that brought together a group of scholars from several disciplines in an international workshop held in Rome. Reflecting the state of the field at the time, the majority of the workshop participants were scholars working in languages other than English, especially the romance languages. Their work mirrors a linguistic and psychological research tradition that Anglophone scholars knew little of until recently. This volume provides English-language readers with updated versions of the papers presented at the meeting. The topics discussed at the workshop are represented in the chapters as follows: * the relationship between acquisition of language and familiarity with written texts; * the reciprocal "permeability" between spoken and written language; * the initial phases of text construction by children; and * the educational conditions that facilitate written language acquisition and writing practice.

The dual mechanism model claims that only rule-generated inflections are productive; that is, can be applied to words borrowed from other languages or derived from other grammatical categories (e.g. verbs derived from nouns or adjectives). Productivity, high generalisability and insensitivity to type or token frequency effects are intertwined properties of rule-generated inflections across languages (Pinker, 1991). We tested this cross-linguistic prediction in two experiments investigating Italian children's spontaneous performance with the past definite (Experiment 1) and their elicited performance with the past definite and the past participle (Experiment 2). The dual mechanism hypothesis argues that the apparent contrast, in English inflectional morphology, between a rule-based default procedure, generating regular past-tense forms, and listed irregular forms stored in an associative net, reflects universal constraints on the properties of possible morphological systems. This research asked whether these constraints can be shown to hold, in the ways predicted by the dual mechanism hypothesis, for Italian past-tense inflection. Experiment 1, using a cross-modal repetition priming task, showed that priming generated by regular inflected pairs (giocarono/giocare) does not differ from prim ing by irregular inflected pairs (scesero/scendere). Experiment 2, using an elicitation task where subjects produce past-tense forms for novel verbs, not only showed little evidence for the presence of an underlying default, but also demonstrated that phonological similarity can affect both regularised and irregularised elicitation patterns. A sample of 170 Italian children was assessed for reading accuracy, reading speed, text comprehension and spelling in Grades 1 and 3 in order to investigate the concurrent and longitudinal relationships among literacy skills. Main results from multivariate analyses (regression, discriminant and path analyses) indicated that reading speed was the best predictor of later literacy and that spelling was the most stable measure and influenced text comprehension and reading speed. An asymmetry was also observed in the longitudinal relationship between reading and spelling errors, with reading errors predicting later spelling errors and a non-significant result in the opposite direction.

In disputes and other conflict talk, speakers adopt two conversational roles: rejecting the addressee's position and providing some ground for their own position. Arguments used as grounds commonly show that the speaker's position is based on underlying norms and rules that are supposed to be shared by the participants. Thus, providing justifications in disputes means producing arguments that can make the speaker's position less questionable by the recipient. Several studies have analyzed children's social and verbal behavior in conflict interaction (Brenneis & Lein, 1977; Eisenberg & Garvey, 1981; Goodwin, 1983; Maynard, 1985) and have shown that children can produce justifications at an early age. For instance, toddlers frequently justify struggles over toys by claiming possession. In mother-child conflicts over the "right" to perform certain actions, 3-year-olds have justified their own position by arguing about the consequences of the actions (Dunn & Munn, 1987). When the morality of an action is questioned, preschool children seem to use justifications consisting of redefinitions of the action itself. This study explores the role of discourse functions in children's use of because (perchi). The disputes of 172 preschoolers were analyzed in terms of interactive move, argumentative strategies, and communicative acts. Occurrences of because were identified and described. Production of because by the same subjects in the context of teacher-children conversations was analyzed. Results showed that the causal connective tends to co-occur with justification acts and may work as a device that introduces new information and gives emphasis to the speaker's position without providing any reference to causes or motives. Besides working in this perhaps more basic way in discourse, because has the sentential function of linking events to conditions.

This article describes children's and teacher's talk in classroom discussion that is a kind of speech event aimed at knowledge construction. Eleven discussions attended by twelve 5-year-old children in two different social contexts and on two different subjects were recorded and analyzed. The discussions were preceded by shared activity and guided by the children's teacher. Children's talk and teacher's talk are described through categories based on the sequential function of turns at talk. Sequences of two turns are identified and discussed. Results suggest that, in the agreement phases of discussion, children's topical talk and teacher's topical talk are reciprocally affected. In particular, children's extended talk is more likely to occur when preceded by teacher's repetitions and rephrasings or by peer continuations. The way of speaking at school can transmit ways of thinking and knowing and give structure to experience and knowledge. This study aims to describe and interpret the kind of discursive practices which can be constructed in a «literacy event», in this case a particular type of classroom discussion about a story. The study integrantes a Vygotskian perspective with the conversational approach proposed by Levinson. Following this approach, particular sequential moves in dispute and co-construction episodes are identified. This analysis was complemented by framing the task and the resulting data within the general background of Leont'ev theory of activity, and its recent applications to adult-child joint activity. The different components of this social event in early literacy, were interpreted according to tisis approach. The study hows the teacher and children can accomodate to each other and reciprocally appropiate different perspectives in a literacy event.

In this study we explore the development of phonological and lexical reading in dyslexic children. We tested a group of 14 Italian children who have been diagnosed with dyslexia and whose reading age is end of grade 1. We compared this group with a group of 70 typically developing children who have been tested for reading at the end of grade 1. For each dyslexic child we also selected a participant who was attending the same grade, was close in age, and showed typical reading development when tested with a narrative passage reading task (Cornoldi, Colpo, & Gruppo MT, 1981) for correctness and reading speed. Children in this group are ''same grade controls.'' We used a reading task consisting of 40 three syllables words. A qualitative and quantitative method of coding children's naming allowed us to distinguish several components of their reading performance: the grapheme and word recognition, the size of orthographic units involved in the aloud orthog- raphy-phonology conversion, the reading process used to recognize words. The comparison of the dyslexic group with the reading age and the same grade control groups reveals different trends of delayed reading processes. Considering dyslexic children's chronological age, lexical reading is greatly delayed. Considering dys- lexic children's reading age, the type of reading process that is more deeply delayed is phonological reading. In this paper, episodic structure is invoked to explain decontextualised processes of discourse construction and, in particular, the use of cohesive devices in children's fantasy narratives.

This study investigated the nature of phonological delay in a group of children with specific language impairment. It was asked whether phonological errors in this group of children were generated by a slow but normal language learning process or whether they reflected a selective impairment in some representations that enhance normal acquisition and use of a language phonology. A group of 10 children with SLI (mean age = 5.1) was compared with three groups of normal children who were matched in age (age control group, mean age = 5.1), in sentence comprehension and recalling (grammar control group, mean age = 3.7), or who exhibited a phonological performance lower than the age average (group with low phonological performance, mean age = 4.4). The four groups of children were assessed in terms of: (1) responses to a mispronunciation detection task; and (2) error profiles with complex and simple syllabic structures. Performance on the mispronunciation detection task showed that the group with SLI could distinguish a target lexical item from acoustic non-word stimuli that were highly similar to it in terms of phonetic characteristics. An analysis of overall error rate at this task showed, however, that four children with SLI had a much lower performance than normal children of the same age, even when the auditory stimuli were tokens of the target word, or non-words that were phonetically different from the target. A difficulty in coordinating vocal actions in an articulatory plan accounted for error profiles with simple syllabic structures both for some children with SLI and normal children with phonological performance lower than the age average. A severe difficulty with representing complex syllabic structures was a homogeneous characteristic of the group with SLI and worked as the main indicator of impaired, rather than simply slow, phonological development.

In this study we investigate the re-introduction of referents in the Frog stories told by Italian children aged 4–10 (N = 100). We found that for every age group full nouns are the most frequent forms used for reference re-introduction. Null forms, such as clitic pronouns or person/number inflection on the verb, are the second most frequent forms. A detailed analysis of null forms shows that children of different ages exploit different properties of the verbal and non-verbal context which can make a referent predictable. Compared to preschoolers, elementary school children are more likely to use null forms when the semantic content of the verb, or the structure of the preceding text make referents inferrable. On the other hand, preschoolers tend to exploit the importance of a character in the story plot, or the visual availability of the referent in the non-verbal context, as properties that make an entity salient enough to prevent the speaker from using overt linguistic forms such as full nouns. Our study confirms results of previous research, showing that elementary school children are more competent than preschoolers in integrating the semantic content of the current utterance into the context generated by previous discourse.

This research is concerned with clarifying whether teacher’s communicative strategies affect children’s conversational relevance in classroom discourse.

The aim of this study is to test develo pmental changes in metalinguistic skills in primary school children, using the distinction proposed by Bialystock (1986) between «analyzed knowledge» and «executive control», as two components of metalinguistic awareness involved in different tasks. 60 first, second ami third grade children were individually interviewed on two tasks. In the first task (guided word substitution) children were asked to substitute an underlined word with five alternatives, thus producing new sentences to be judged on their semantic and/ or morpho-syntactical acceptability. In the second task (free word substitution), children have to fiad out the word that can be cancelled ami substituted with a new one. In both tasks children have to express an acceptability judgement, giving reasons for it. Each subject receives two scores for each task. Results from two-way Anova show that the «control» component does not change much, while the «analyzed knowledge» changes signi ficantly, although alto third grade children are more aware of semantic than of morpho-syntactic features of language.

In different languages children have been found to use past verb forms to express the meaning of ‘unreality’ during social pretend play. In this study, the verb forms used by 14 four-year-old Italian children in their pretend play were investigated. Results show that different Italian past verb forms tend to co-occur with different play activities. The imperfect occurs mainly when children plan and negotiate their pretend activities and marks the transition from a real to a pretend frame of reference. The present perfect occurs mainly when children implement their plans and communicate within a pretend frame that has already been established. Results of this study are discussed in comparison with findings on the pretend language of children speaking other languages.
