Special Relativity (SR) determines the properties of synchrotron radiation, but the corresponding mechanisms are frequently misunderstood. Time dilation is often invoked among the causes, whereas its role would violate the principles of SR. We show that the correct explanation of the synchrotron radiation properties is provided by a combination of the Doppler shift, not dependent on time dilation effects, contrary to a common belief, and of the Lorentz transformation into the particle reference frame of the electromagnetic field of the emission-inducing device, also with no contribution from time dilation. We report the results of a low-temperature (300K-15K) high-pressure (up to 22GPa) Raman study of the Verwey transition in magnetite (Fe3O4). We use additional Raman modes observed below the Verwey transition to determine how the transition temperature changes with the quasihydrostatic pressure. Increase of the pressure results in the linear decrease of the Verwey transition temperature, with no discontinuity. The corresponding pressure coefficient dTV/dP is found to be ~ -5.2 K/GPa. Such a decrease is substantially larger than the one predicted by the mean-field Coulomb interaction model of the transition.

The correlated 3d sulphide BaVS_3 is a most interesting compound because of the apparent coexistence of one-dimensional and three-dimensional properties. Our experiments explain this puzzle and shed new light on its electronic structure. High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements in a 4eV wide range below the Fermi level explored the coexistence of weakly correlated a_1g wide-band and strongly correlated e_g narrow-band d-electrons that is responsible for the complicated behavior of this material. Studying the nodal quasiparticles in superconducting cuprates by photoemission with highly improved momentum resolution, we show that a new "kink" feature in the scattering rate is a key to uncover the nature of electron correlations in these compounds. Our data provide evidence that the main doping independent contribution to the scattering can be well understood in terms of the conventional Fermi liquid model, while the additional doping dependent contribution has a magnetic origin. This sheds doubt on applicability of a phonon-mediated pairing mechanism to high temperature superconductors., Comment: rextex, 4 pages, 4 figures

The infrared reflectance of the transition metal chalcogenide 1T-TaS2 has been measured at temperatures from 30K to 360K over 30-45,000cm^-1 (4meV-5.5eV). The optical conductivity was obtained by Kramers-Kronig analysis. At 360K only modest traces of the phonon lines are noticeable. The phonon modes are followed by a pseudogap-like increase of the optical conductivity, with direct optical transitions observed at frequencies above 1eV. As the temperature decreases, the low frequency conductivity also decreases, phonon modes become more pronounced and pseudogap develops into a gap at 800cm^-1 (100meV). We observe an anomalous frequency dependence of the 208cm^-1 infrared-active phonon mode. This mode demonstrates softening as the temperature decreases below the 180K metal-to-insulator transition. The same mode demonstrates strong hysteresis of the frequency and linewidth changes, similar in its temperature behavior to the hysteresis in the dc-resistivity. We report ac susceptibility data on RuSr_2(Eu,Ce)_2Cu_2O_(10-y) (Ru-1222, Ce content x=0.5 and 1.0), RuSr_2GdCu_2O_8 (Ru-1212) and SrRuO_3. Both Ru-1222 (x=0.5, 1.0) sample types exhibit unexpected magnetic dynamics in low magnetic fields: logarithmic time relaxation, switching behavior, and `inverted' hysteresis loops. Neither Ru-1212 nor SrRuO_3 exhibit such magnetic dynamics. The results are interpreted as evidence of the complex magnetic order in Ru-1222. We report ac susceptibility measurements on polycrystalline samples of SrRuO_3 and three ruthenocuprates: superconducting RuSr_2GdCu_2O_8 (Ru-1212), superconducting RuSr_2Eu_(2-x)Ce_xCu_2O_y (Ru-1222, x=0.5) and nonsuperconducting, insulating RuSr_2Eu_(2-x)Ce_xCu_2O_z (Ru-1222, x=1.0). Ac susceptibility of both Ru-1222 compositions exhibit logarithmic time relaxation and `inverted' hysteresis loops. Ru-1212 samples exhibit none of these behaviors. We interpret the magnetic behavior of Ru-1222 in the framework of weakly coupled magnetic multilayers and argue that superconductivity coexists with qualitatively different magnetic behaviors., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures; submitted to Phys.Rev.Lett. We have used angular resolved photoemission to measure the angular dependence of the superconducting gap in highly overdoped Bi2212 (Tc=65K). While the node at 45 degrees is conserved, we find substantial deviation from a first order d-wave dependence away from the node. The pairing susceptibility is peaked at special regions on the Fermi surface. Comparing these results with a detailed mapping of the Fermi surface we performed, we could measure the extension and location of these hot regions. We find the hot regions to be evenly spread about the nominal locations of hot spots. The decrease of the gap amplitude away from these hot regions follows very closely theoretical calculations within the spin fluctuation approach. These results strongly suggest that the pairing susceptibility is peaked at Q=(Pi,Pi)., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

We present infrared and Raman measurements of magnetite (Fe_3O_4). This material is known to undergo a metal-insulator and a structural transition (Verwey transition) at T_V=120K. At temperatures below T_V, we observe a strong gap-like suppression of the optical conductivity below 1000 cm^-1. The structural aspect of the Verwey transition demonstrates itself by the appearance of additional infrared- and Raman-active phonons. The frequencies of the infrared-active phonons show no significant singularities at the transition whereas their linewidths increase. The frequency and linewidth of the Raman-active phonon at 670 cm^-1 changes abruptly at the transition. For T

We analyzed photoemssion data for several doping levels of the Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+x} compounds, ranging from overdoped to underdoped. We show that the high frequency part of the spectra near (0,\pi) can be described by Fermi liquid theory in the overdoped regime, but exhibits a non-Fermi liquid behavior in the underdoped regime. We further demonstrate that this novel behavior fits reasonably well to a 1/\sqrt{\omega} behavior suggested for systems with strong spin fluctuations., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures (EPS), RevTeX, submitted to Phys Rev B RC

We performed angle-resolved photoemission experiments on overdoped single crystal $Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+x}$ samples with Tc values as low as 55K and very narrow transitions as measured by AC susceptibility. The photoemission data indicate the presence of a ``shadow'' peak in the quasiparticle spectral function $A(\omega)$ shifted by $(\pi,\pi)$ from the conventional quasiparticle peak. The ratio of the shadow/quasiparticle peak amplitudes strongly increases with the binding energy. This is consistent with the idea that the shadow peak is not a structural replica of the quasiparticle peak, but rather a maximum in a spectral function which can exist due to interaction with spin fluctuations peaked at $(\pi,\pi)$., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures are available upon request

$Pb_{0.4}Bi_{1.6}Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+x}$ ($Bi(Pb)-$2212) single crystal samples were studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), $ab-$plane ($\rho_{ab}$) and $c-$axis ($\rho_c$) resistivity, and high resolution angle-resolved ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (ARUPS). TEM reveals that the modulation in the $b-$axis for $Pb(0.4)-$doped $Bi(Pb)-$2212 is dominantly of $Pb-$type that is not sensitive to the oxygen content of the system, and the system clearly shows a structure of orthorhombic symmetry. Oxygen annealed samples exhibit a much lower $c-$axis resistivity and a resistivity minimum at $80-130$K. He-annealed samples exhibit a much higher $c-$axis resistivity and $d\rho_c/dT<0$ behavior below 300K. The Fermi surface (FS) of oxygen annealed $Bi(Pb)-$2212 mapped out by ARUPS has a pocket in the FS around the $\bar{M}$ point and exhibits orthorhombic symmetry. There are flat, parallel sections of the FS, about 60\% of the maximum possible along $k_x = k_y$, and about 30\% along $k_x = - k_y$. The wavevectors connecting the flat sections are about $0.72(\pi, \pi)$ along $k_x = k_y$, and about $0.80(\pi, \pi)$ along $k_x = - k_y$, rather than $(\pi,\pi)$. Doping Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2O8+y with Co causes a superconductor-insulator transition. We study correlations between changes in the electrical resistivity RHOab(T) and the electronic bandstructure using identical single crystalline samples. For undoped samples the resistivity is linear in temperature and has a vanishing residual resistivity. In angle resolved photoemission these samples show dispersing band-like states. Co-doping decreases TC and causes and increase in the residual resistivity. Above a threshold Co-concentration the resistivity is metallic (drab/dT >0) at room temperature, turns insulating below a characteristic temperature Tmin and becomes super- conducting at even lower temperature. These changes in the resistivity correlate with the disappearance of the dispersing band-like states in angle resolved photoemission. We show that Anderson localization caused by the impurity potential of the doped Co-atoms provides a consistent explanation of all experimental features. Therefore the TC reduction in 3d-metal doped high- temperature superconductors is not caused by Abrikosov Gor'kov pair- breaking but by spatial localization of the carriers. The observed suppression of TC indicates that the system is in the homogenous limit of the superconductor-insulator transition. The coexistance of insulating (dRHOab/dT <0) normal state behavior and super- conductivity indicates that the superconducting ground state is formed out of spatially almost localized carriers., Comment: Postscript file 11 pages plus 4 figures available on request

We present the first detailed angle-resolved photoemission evidence that there are two types of carriers that contribute to the photoemission superconducting condensate in $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}Ca_{1}Cu_{2}O_{8+x}$. We have performed high energy resolution angle-resolved photoemission studies of the normal state band structure of oxygen overdoped $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}Ca_{1}Cu_{2}O_{8+x}$. We find that there is an extended saddle point singularity in the density of states along $\Gamma-\bar{M}-Z$ direction. The data also indicate that there is an asymmetry in the Fermi surface for both the $\Gamma-\bar{M}-Z$ and perpendicular directions., Comment: APS_Revtex. 28 pages, including 16 figures, available upon request. We present the first detailed data of the momentum-resolved, temperature dependence of the superconducting gap of $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}Ca_{1}Cu_{2}O_{8+x}$, complemented by similar data on the intensity of the photoemission superconducting condensate spectral area. The gap anisotropy between the $\Gamma-\bar{M}$ and $\Gamma-X$ directions increases markedly with increasing temperature, contrary to what happens for conventional anisotropic-gap superconductors such as lead. Specifically, the size of the superconducting gap along the $\Gamma-X$ direction decreases to values indistinguishable from zero at temperatures for which the gap retains virtually full value along the $\Gamma-\bar{M}$ direction., Comment: APS_REVTEX. 19 pages, including 8 figures, available upon request. A comparative study has been made of iodine-intercalated Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$Ca$_{1}$Cu$_{2}$O$_{x}$ single crystal and 1 atm O$_{2}$ annealed Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$Ca$_{1}$Cu$_{1}$O$_{x}$ single crystal using AC susceptibility measurement, X-ray photoemission (XPS) and angle-resolved ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (ARUPS). AC susceptibility measurement indicates that O$_{2}$-doped samples studied have T$_{c}$ of 84 $^{o}$K, whereas T$_{c}$ of Iodine-doped samples studied are 80 $^{o}$K. XPS Cu 2p core level data establish that the hole concentration in the CuO$_{2}$ planes are essentially the same for these two kinds of samples. ARUPS measurements show that electronic structure of the normal states near the Fermi level has been strongly affected by iodine intercalation.
