Abstract

We illustrate how purpose-specific, graphical modeling enables application experts with different levels of expertise to collaboratively design and then produce complex applications using their individual, purpose-specific modeling language. Our illustration includes seven graphical Integrated Modeling Environments (IMEs) that support full code generation, as well as four browser-based applications that were modeled and then fully automatically generated and produced using DIME, our most complex graphical IME. While the seven IMEs were chosen to illustrate the types of languages we support with our Language-Driven Engineering (LDE) approach, the four DIME products were chosen to give an impression of the power of our LDE-generated IMEs. In fact, Equinocs, Springer Nature's future editorial system for proceedings, is also being fully automatically generated and then deployed at their Dordrecht site using a deployment pipeline generated with Rig, one of the IMEs presented. 3. Online University Orientation Models for Student Transition between Secondary and Tertiary Education

Abstract

The transformation of higher education practices needs to be accompanied by the deployment of university guidance. This is especially important when activities have to be carried online and remotely. Online students expect to receive precise information to be successful learners, just as they would if they were in a face-to-face setting, but even more, due to the large capabilities of digital services. Worldwide universities provide free and open access to educational content online, but this is effective for guidance only if it is the main objective of courses and resources. One way to address student transition has been experimented by the University of Turin with the action Orient@mente that helps students in their transition from secondary school to university. In Orient@mente, students can find useful information, guidance activities, automatically graded tests to prepare for university admittance, online courses for revising basic knowledge, resources for foreign students, and information about the Erasmus program. This action has already proven its usefulness and it is expanding as a transversal and international model. Soon a new action will be fully developed, Eirenteering, a name mixing Eire (the Irish name for Ireland) and Orienteering. This paper discusses the methodologies adopted in Orient@mente and the forthcoming Eirenteering, together with results obtained with Orient@mente concerning the usage and the usefulness of the service. Imbalanced datasets pose a challenge wherever accurate predictions are essential. This paper explores using low-code/no-code platforms, such as Pyrus and ADD-Lib, to apply data resampling techniques and binary decision diagrams for more accessible and reliable ML workflows. Tested on three medical datasets, these techniques improve model performance by addressing class imbalances. The integration of resampling and formal methods enhances prediction accuracy while making ML tools more accessible to professionals, enabling better decision-making in critical applications. The techniques are applicable to any domain, not just in healthcare.

Abstract

Background: In biomedical imaging research, experimental biologists generate vast amounts of data that require advanced computational analysis. Breakthroughs in experimental techniques, such as multiplex immunofluorescence tissue imaging, enable detailed proteomic analysis, but most biomedical researchers lack the programming and Artificial Intelligence (AI) expertise to leverage these innovations effectively. Methods: Cinco de Bio (CdB) is a web-based, collaborative low-code/no-code modelling and execution platform designed to address this challenge. It is designed along Model-Driven Development (MDD) and Service-Orientated Architecture (SOA) to enable modularity and scalability, and it is underpinned by formal methods to ensure correctness. The pre-processing of immunofluorescence images illustrates the ease of use and ease of modelling with CdB in comparison with the current, mostly manual, approaches. Results: CdB simplifies the deployment of data processing services that may use heterogeneous technologies. User-designed models support both a collaborative and user-centred design for biologists. Domain-Specific Languages for the Application domain (A-DSLs) are supported through data and process ontologies/taxonomies. They allow biologists to effectively model workflows in the terminology of their field. Conclusions: Comparative analysis of similar platforms in the literature illustrates the superiority of CdB along a number of comparison dimensions. Abstract

We present a graphical and dynamic framework for binding and execution of business) process models. It is tailored to integrate 1) ad hoc processes modeled graphically, 2) third party services discovered in the (Inter)net, and 3) (dynamically) synthesized process chains that solve situation-specific tasks, with the synthesis taking place not only at design time, but also at runtime. Key to our approach is the introduction of type-safe stacked second-order execution contexts that allow for higher-order process modeling. Tamed by our underlying strict service-oriented notion of abstraction, this approach is tailored also to be used by application experts with little technical knowledge: users can select, modify, construct and then pass (component) processes during process execution as if they were data. We illustrate the impact and essence of our framework along a concrete, realistic (business) process modeling scenario: the development of Springer's browser-based Online Conference Service (OCS). The most advanced feature of our new framework allows one to combine online synthesis with the integration of the synthesized process into the running application. Abstract

Digitalisation and Industry 4.0 is changing the landscape of traditional industries and how they operate. Regulation, sustainability and staff shortages are challenging companies to alter their behaviour and business processes. It is now becoming essential for small to medium size enterprises (SMEs) to adapt to this change. This paper showcases how digitalisation can help with these new requirements by examining a case study with specific interest in collecting, monitoring and analysing data. The application was created for an SME registered in Ireland, and it will be used to showcase the difference between normal coding and low code development in the creation of these apps. This comparison is important because low code development will become essential for organisations in order to create novel IT-based approaches that will be used for the digital transformation of their specific business.
