The suicide of one person impacts 60 people, known as suicide survivors. These survivors are at an increased risk for negative mental health outcomes including PTSD, suicidal ideation, and suicide contagion. Despite these consequences, there have not been any information science studies that have explored the information behaviors of people who have recently survived the suicide of a loved one. This article takes a unique approach in combining autoethnography with traditional survey research. One hundred and ninteen participants sourced from a private Facebook suicide bereavement group responded to a survey asking them about their information-seeking after a loved one committed suicide. The qualitative data were fragmented and grouped into like-responses and thematic codes that gave explanation to the research questions. These results are coupled with the author’s ethnographic recounting of a similar experience. Brenda Dervin’s sense-making is employed as the methodological lens through which the study is conducted. It is found that suicide survivors are highly unlikely to have their informational needs met. In the immediate aftermath of their loss, they are most likely to look for information related to the suffering of the deceased. As time passes, they begin to look for information about coping with their loss and preventing suicide of other people; either those close to them or in a larger community scale. Being a survivor motivated many participants to advocacy work. Finally, the author argues that the findings of this article should compel further research and the creation of information policy to aid survivors and prevent suicide contagion.

Few studies investigate how teacher discourse moves relate to subsequent student discourse moves in real-time small-group reading instruction with multilingual learners (MLLs). Grounded in sociocultural theory and classroom discourse research, this study examines how fourth-grade MLLs engage in reasoning discourse during text-based discussions. We argue that by examining reasoning discourse holistically - beyond speaker turns - we can capture teacher-talk moves that facilitate or constrain student reasoning. This examination illuminates discourse practices such as “procedural instruction” and “reference to text,” with important consequences for MLLs. Our study has implications for scholarship analyzing classroom talk and literacy educators facilitating discussions where MLLs engage in sophisticated and complex reasoning discourse.

Effective mental health services require accurate assessment of psychosocial impairments linked to mental health concerns. Youth who experience these impairments do so within and across various contexts (e.g., school, home). Youth may display symptoms of mental health concerns without co-occurring impairments, and vice versa. Yet, nearly all impairment measures presume that those assessed display mental health concerns. Consequently, we recently developed youth and parent versions of a five-item measure of youth psychosocial impairments (i.e., Work and Social Adjustment Scale for Youth [WSASY]), structured to assess any youth, regardless of mental health status. Across two studies, we developed and tested a WSASY teacher version, in a large sample of 382 student teacher reports (Study 1), and a subsample of 66 youth who, along with their parents and teachers, completed the WSASY and a series of school- and home-based behavioral tasks (Study 2). In Study 1, WSASY teacher reports demonstrated excellent internal consistency and unique relations with teacher reports on well-established measures of psychosocial strengths and difficulties. In Study 2, teacher, youth, and parent WSASY reports demonstrated low correspondence with each other and context-specific relations with criterion variables. This low correspondence allowed us to capitalize on an integrative approach designed to optimize informant-specific variance. Integrative scores demonstrated robust, large-magnitude relations with criterion variables across multiple information sources. These findings provide important psychometric support for use of WSASY teacher reports, and pave the way toward integrating WSASY reports from multiple informants who observe youth psychosocial impairments within different contexts and from different perspectives. PurposeThe United States of America is in the midst of an opioid crisis. However, little has been written within the domain of LIS (Library and Information Science) about the health information needs and behaviors of people who inject drugs. The purpose of this project is to conduct a scoping review of the current knowledge disseminated by LIS scholars and professionals regarding what information people who inject drugs have access to, need, how they interact with information and what dissemination methods may be most beneficial.Design/methodology/approachA scoping review of the literature was conducted with the additional inclusion criteria that the information needs be expressed from the insider perspective of this population instead of from the researcher.FindingsIn searching over a dozen databases, only seven articles were found that reflected the information behaviors of people who use drugs from the perspective of themselves. Only one article was from information science, two were from health informatics and one was from health communication, a closely linked field. These findings describe the information behaviors and needs of this population and speak to the need for more comprehensive research in this area in order to create targeted health information resources for this sensitive population.Originality/valueThere is little research in the domain of information science that has been conducted into the health information-seeking behaviors of people who inject drugs. Most of the work in this area is from the perspective of the researcher, not the person who injects drugs. Refugees and immigrants have adverse health outcomes after arriving in the United States. These negative outcomes tend to be disproportionate to those of the general population, regardless of the person’s health status upon entry to the country. Research has shown that strong health literacy skills can improve health outcomes in this group. This article reports the results of a pilot in which Library and Information Science Master’s students deliver health literacy training to refugee and immigrant women. This training was created in consultation with experts and community partners. The participants were pre- and post-tested with the Short Test of Functional Health Literacy for Adults (STOFHLA) to assess the efficacy of this intervention. Following the completion of the course, the participants were interviewed and asked for comprehensive feedback on the relevance and helpfulness of the program to satisfy their health-related information needs. Their feedback was substantial and will be the basis of a future iteration of this pilot. The pre- and post-test scores of the group showed a statistically significant improvement, providing evidence that the course was effective in raising STOFHLA scores. This article provides insight into providing health literacy instruction for a highly vulnerable group that may be invaluable to library and information science professionals. The purpose of this work is to create a replicable curriculum targeting immigrant and refugee women to be delivered at libraries—and a program in which LIS students can get involved to prepare for dynamic community engagement.

Researchers in LIS have been working on projects related to health and wellness in various environments, whether related to medical libraries, public libraries, health information behavior, or health information-related community interventions. At the same time, researchers have explored new methods to educate students on both research and on health and wellness as it relates to LIS. It is our goal to bring together the two and create a collaborative panel in which both the panelists and audience participate in a dialog that highlights our research and our engagement with our students over the past couple of years examining health information and practices in our libraries, communities, and classrooms. This non-traditional panel focuses on health and wellness research and its impact on student education and engagement in research activities. The session aims to provide an opportunity for both the organizers and the audience to share their research and/or research agendas and engage in conversations and feedback that can contribute to a cohesive understanding as to what researchers are doing in the area of health and wellness. Our objective is also to discuss current pedagogical practices or student engagement opportunities related to these topical areas. Some examples will be physical and mental health programs and services in public libraries, health literacy courses taught by LIS students in public libraries, health insurance education, using the OCLC Call to Action Opioid toolkit with public libraries, public library staff as health information facilitators, and much more. The session will begin with the Health SIG members presenting their research through five-minute lightning talks. While the panelists describe their research, they will begin creating a visualization on Google Jamboard that represents the research being discussed. After these first presentations, the audience will be invited to share their own research, which will also be added to the collaborative board. Throughout this process, participants will be invited to offer constructive feedback on each contributor’s ideas. Through this process, we hope to create an exciting, interactive session in which the SIG members and the audience will have the opportunity to share research and teaching strategies and potentially find new collaborators.

In January of 2021, Aaron Ansuini, a student at Concordia University (Canada) posted the following tweet: “HI EXCUSE ME, I just found out the prof for this online course I’m taking *died in 2019* and he’s technically still giving classes since he’s *literally my prof for this course* and I’m learning from lectures recorded before his passing ..........it’s a great class but WHAT” The instructor, François-Marc Gagnon passed away in 2019. Tamara Kneese, writing for Slate, homed in on the key issues at stake: “This case may be particularly egregious, but it intersects with larger questions about copyright and control over faculty members’ online course materials and the various ways faculty labor within higher education is degraded and devalued,” all of which have become sharper and more important given the en masse move to online education during COVID-19. There are norms, ethics, and policies at stake concerning the creation, use, and distribution of online course designs and learning objects. A central issue is that online courses are often embedded in institutionally managed learning management systems, such as Canvas and Blackboard, and other educational technologies. All of the digital artifacts, then, are able to be duplicated, remixed, shared and reused - with or without the original instructor’s knowledge or express permission. The result is that online instructors are more susceptible to having their intellectual labor and property exploited by their institutions to serve administrative and financial interests. The American Association of University Professors’ (AAUP) Statement on Online and Distance Education states that: The institution should establish policies and procedures to protect its educational objectives and the interests of both those who cre­ate new material and those who adapt material from traditional courses for use in dis­tance education. The administration should publish these policies and procedures and distribute them, along with requisite information about copyright law, to all concerned persons [….] Provision should also be made for the original teacher­[/]creator, the teacher­[/]adapter, or an appropriate faculty body to exercise control over the future use and distribution of record­ed instructional material and to determine whether the material should be revised or with­drawn from use. Sponsored by the Information Policy special interest group (SIG), this panel will be composed of three speakers that will deliver presentations that address the intersection of policy and ethics regarding online instructors’ intellectual property, with special emphasis on AAUP’s point that online instructors should be able to control their use of their course designs and artifacts. Kip Currier will provide an overview of works made for hire practices and trends in academe, as well as suggest some strategies and best practices for equipping faculty to better understand the works made for hire suite of boiler plate requirements and restrictions, as well as opportunities for leveling the IP ownership field. Suliman Hawamdeh will speak about the need to update guidelines to protect the interests of the organization. And, Emily Knox will weigh in as the former interim Associate Dean of Academic Affairs regarding institutional issues relevant to these policies.

INTRODUCTION: Organophosphate (OP) insecticides, including chlorpyrifos, have been linked with numerous harmful health effects on maternal and child health. Limited data are available on the biological mechanisms and endogenous pathways underlying the toxicity of chlorpyrifos exposures on pregnancy and birth outcomes. In this study, we measured a urinary chlorpyrifos metabolite and used high-resolution metabolomics (HRM) to identify biological perturbations associated with chlorpyrifos exposure among pregnant women in Thailand, who are disparately exposed to high levels of OP insecticides. METHODS: This study included 50 participants from the Study of Asian Women and their Offspring’s Development and Environmental Exposures (SAWASDEE). We used liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry to conduct metabolic profiling on first trimester serum samples collected from participants to evaluate metabolic perturbations in relation to chlorpyrifos exposures. We measured 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinol (TCPy), a specific metabolite of chlorpyrifos and chlorpyrifos-methyl, in first trimester urine samples to assess the levels of exposures. Following an untargeted metabolome-wide association study workflow, we used generalized linear models, pathway enrichment analyses, and chemical annotation to identify significant metabolites and pathways associated with urinary TCPy levels. RESULTS: In the 50 SAWASDEE participants, the median urinary TCPy level was 4.36 μg TCPy/g creatinine. In total, 691 unique metabolic features were found significantly associated with TCPy levels (p < 0.05) after controlling for confounding factors. Pathway analysis of metabolic features associated with TCPy indicated perturbations in 24 metabolic pathways, most closely linked to the production of reactive oxygen species and cellular damage. These pathways include tryptophan metabolism, fatty acid oxidation and peroxisome metabolism, cytochromes P450 metabolism, glutathione metabolism, and vitamin B3 metabolism. We confirmed the chemical identities of 25 metabolites associated with TCPy levels, including glutathione, cystine, arachidic acid, itaconate, and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide. DISCUSSION: The metabolic perturbations associated with TCPy levels were related to oxidative stress, cellular damage and repair, and systemic inflammation, which could ultimately contribute to health outcomes, including neurodevelopmental deficits in the child. These findings support the future development of sensitive biomarkers to investigate the metabolic underpinnings related to pesticide exposure during pregnancy and to understand its link to adverse outcomes in children.

Background Congenital leptin deficiency (CLD) is a rare autosomal recessive form of monogenic obesity caused by loss-of-function mutations in the leptin gene. Monogenic obesity disorders, including CLD, have been reported to be prevalent among children with severe obesity in a consanguineous Pakistani population. Targeted therapy is available in the form of recombinant human leptin (metreleptin). We previously reported baseline characteristics of the first cases of CLD identified in the United States, sisters of Pakistani origin with a family history of consanguinity. This report provides follow-up after 18 months of metreleptin therapy in an observational research protocol. Clinical Case Two sisters ages 18 yrs (A; BMI 45.2 kg/m2) and 20 yrs (B; 45.0 kg/m2) were referred for evaluation of obesity. Both had hyperphagia and excessive weight gain by age 3 months. They had been treated with combination OCPs in adolescence due to primary amenorrhea and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. Sister A was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at age 15 years and was treated with metformin and liraglutide with suboptimal glycemic control (HbA1C 9.3%). At the time of their initial evaluation, serum leptin levels were undetectable. After discontinuing OCPs, testing confirmed hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. Both patients were homozygous for the pathogenic variant c398delG in exon 3 of the leptin gene (LEP), which causes a frameshift/premature stop codon. Treatment was initiated with metreleptin 5 mg daily SC in Sister A and 3.75 mg SC daily, increasing to 5 mg daily at Week 8 in Sister B. Both remained on therapy throughout the 18 month observational trial without serious adverse effects or clinical evidence of neutralizing antibodies. At study end, both had substantial weight loss (Sister A: 45.3 kg or 32.8% of initial weight, Sister B: 39.1 kg or 33.1% of initial weight). Clinically significant improvements in related parameters were observed, including percent body fat (Sister A: -13%, Sister B: -18%), HOMA2-IR (A: -83%, B: -80%), ALT (A: -90%, B: -91%), triglycerides (A: -47%, B: -26%), hsCRP (A: -80%, B: -84%), FGF-21 (A: -81%, B: -67%), and adiponectin (A: +42%, B: +37%). In both sisters, hepatic steatosis improved and bone mineral density increased (A: +0.7 SD, B: +0.6 SD). At study end, Sister A's HbA1C was 5.4% off medication. Spontaneous regular menses resumed after 3 months of therapy in Sister A and four months in Sister B. Improvements were observed in mood, self-esteem, physical function, energy, quality of life, dietary disinhibition, and perceived hunger, measured by validated questionnaires. Conclusion Metrelepin produced significant improvements in weight, metabolic profiles, hepatic steatosis, reproductive function, mood and quality of life in our patients. Given the efficacy of metreleptin therapy, screening for CLD should be undertaken for any patient presenting with hyperphagia and early onset of obesity. Background: Achieving optimal anticoagulation remains a significant challenge in managing patients on left ventricular assist device (LVAD) support. Maintaining tight control of anticoagulation can be time-consuming but essential in preventing serious complications such as pump thrombosis and bleeding. Objectives: The efficacy and safety of a nurse coordinator-driven outpatient protocol (NCDOP) was evaluated for managing anticoagulation for LVAD patients. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed as part of a single-center quality improvement project. The primary outcome was time in therapeutic range (TTR), a measure of anticoagulation target efficacy before and after the implementation of the protocol. Results: Among 47 patients, who served as their own control, there was no significant change in TTR or proportion of hospitalizations following institution of the protocol. Pre-NCDOP, there were six major bleeding and two thrombotic events, and none during the post-NCDOP period. Conclusions: A NCDOP is a reliable method to manage anticoagulation in LVAD patients and facilitates efficient care delivery. Future multicenter studies with larger patient cohorts are warranted to expand on the findings outlined in this manuscript.

Training and consultation are core implementation strategies used to support the adoption and delivery of evidence-based prevention programs (EBPPs), but are often insufficient alone to effect teacher behavior change. Motivational interviewing (MI) and related behavior change techniques (e.g., strategic education, social influence, implementation planning) delivered in a group format offer promising supplements to training and consultation to improve EBPP implementation. Beliefs and Attitudes for Successful Implementation in Schools for Teachers (BASIS-T) is a theoretically informed, motivational implementation strategy delivered in a group format prior to and immediately after EBPP training. The purpose of this study was to examine the proximal effects of BASIS-T on hypothesized mechanisms of behavior change (e.g., attitudes, subjective norms, intentions to implement) in the context of teachers receiving training and consultation to implement the Good Behavior Game. As part of a pilot trial, 83 elementary school teachers from 9 public elementary schools were randomly assigned (at the school-level to reduce contamination across participants) to a BASIS-T (n = 44) or active comparison control (n = 39) condition, with both conditions receiving Good Behavior Game (GBG) training and consultation. A series of mixed effects models revealed meaningful effects favoring BASIS-T on a number of hypothesized mechanisms of behavior change leading to increased motivation to implement GBG. The implications, limitations, and directions for future research on the use of MI with groups of individuals and other behavior change techniques to increase the yield of training and consultation are discussed.
