In caring professions, such as childcare and healthcare, empathy and narrative underpin important aspects of the emotional work of early childhood educators and nurses (Rogers, Jefferies & Ng, 2022). Unfortunately, they are not given much attention in scholarly articles, but it is important for practitioners to understand them (Barton & Garvis, 2019). This cross-disciplinary paper discusses the virtue of empathy from a philosophical stance, and its relationship to narrative when building shared understandings. There is a sense in which empathy and narrative are interdependent: storytelling helps to cultivate empathy in others, and empathy can be essential if we are to elicit and understand the stories that others have to tell. In fact, when it comes to eliciting and understanding the kinds of stories that are of particular interest for this paper (i.e., the personal stories to be told by young children participating in a research project, and those of patients in a healthcare setting), empathy tends to be especially important. As we argue, these examples drawn from early childhood education and care and healthcare serve to illustrate certain ways in which empathy, storytelling, and the development of shared understandings can be of deep significance; not only for researchers, educators and healthcare professionals, but also for senior administrative and public policy officials.

The relative status of ‘literary’ and ‘non-literary’ translation is clearly implied in their customary designations: one is the default and one is what the default is not. Similar terminological patterns in other fields of interest can give rise to ideological and political debate – as in the racial epithets ‘white’ and ‘non-white’. But what lies beneath the words? Discussions about the scope and nature of translation within translation studies have already moved on from a binary division to encompass a growing number of ‘subfields’, so that “the traditional inclination of translation studies towards literary translation is now only one among many and varied preoccupations” (Brems et al. 2012: 3). Included in Brem’s et al.’s understanding of translation studies are various interpreting activities, although the spoken/written distinction becomes harder to sustain in the light of multimedia developments and some professional practices. Borders have become porous here too (see Shlesinger & Ordan 2012). Furthermore, while the propositional content of what are broadly known as non-literary texts has been said to differ from that of literary texts (see Harvey 1998: 277), as also their respective functions – “transactional or informational” aiming to “influence or inform” as opposed to “affective/aesthetic [. . .] aiming to provoke emotions and/or entertain” (Jones 2009: 152) – the linguistic and stylistic devices which are used to fulfil those functions are less easily categorised. In both cases, the translator is moving between cultures and languages, making decisions about optimal solutions for the setting, and deploying his/her interpretive and creative abilities.

Past research considering environmentally and socially sustainable supply chain management practices has demonstrated that focusing solely on upstream activities of the supply chain is no longer sufficient, warranting considerations of consumer perceptions of firm behaviors within the supply chain. This article addresses this directly, offering empirical evidence indicating that sustainable supply chain management practices result in more favorable consumer brand evaluations and increased purchase intentions. This effect is operationalized through consumers' self-brand connections and cognitive dissonance such that sustainable supply chain management simultaneously increases connections between individuals and the brand but decreases the psychological discomfort associated with cognitive dissonance.

The secondary market for antiques and collectibles represents a disorganized market channel characterized by competition for supply of rare goods and retail sales arising from non-traditional channels, loose ties among channel members, and largely unregulated transactions between buyers and sellers. This study explores how knowledge structures affect dealers' abilities to turn a profit in the antiques and collectibles market. Data were obtained from in-depth interviews with eight professional antiques and collectibles dealers operating in different regions of the United States. Findings indicate that while information is widespread, its credibility can be difficult to assess without some degree of product and market knowledge. Furthermore, the findings show knowledge plays a critical and somewhat differential role in the ability of professional dealers to turn a profit. Families sometimes face prolonged and frequent absences of a parent due to employment in industries that require work away or for military deployment. Many families, however, are finding ways to survive and thrive. Within Australian Defence Force (ADF) families, despite the high stress and inherent danger, most do cope, displaying strength and resilience. Limited research has been conducted with Australian military families with young children, even less focusing on protective factors. There is particularly a dearth of research about families who have left the ADF or who have experienced the death of an ADF parent. This study offers unique insights through exploring family experiences of parental deployment by applying a socioconstructivist approach from data derived through narrative research. Protective factors were identified through relationships, the ADF, social media, community organizations, government departments, and digital communication technologies. Understanding how these families manage and the protective factors they utilize may enable early childhood educators and family support services to better understand family resilience, and thus provide appropriate services for military families with young children.

Each Irish local authority sets out in its development plan the quantum of parking spaces required for new developments. The parking standards applicable to developments should encourage the idea of sustainable travel, with less parking required in areas where public transport is readily available and more parking required in areas where alternatives to the private car are less in evidence. Using data from their devlopment plans, the 30 local authorities are ranked on the basis of their level of car parking provision. These results are compared to a set of rankings for the local authorities based on their relative car dependency and usage of public transport. The analysis indicated that many urban-based local authorities do not have a coherent parking strategy, with very high levels of parking required in geographical areas where significant alternatives to the private car exist. Reasons as to why this may be the case are provided.

Cette contribution aborde la notion de domaine à partir de différentes perspectives. Elle identifie des questions pertinentes à la fois pour la terminologie et l’anglais de spécialité (ASP) et examine les relations entre les langues de spécialité et les domaines auxquelles elles sont adossées. Elle tente de cerner la notion de « domaine », cruciale pour la terminologie et l’ASP. Elle montre ensuite que l’acception moderne dynamique de la notion de domaine est un phénomène relativement récent, dans la mesure où le savoir a connu une spécialisation croissante au cours du XXe siècle. Cette contribution se clôt sur une brève étude de cas. Celle-ci permet de conclure qu’il serait plus pertinent de remplacer la question initiale, « Qu’est-ce ? », par la question « Où ? », étant donné que les auteurs et les traducteurs ne communiquent pas par le truchement des domaines eux-mêmes, mais à travers les textes, où le concept de genre est central, tant pour la production que pour l’analyse. This paper addresses the notion of “domain” from a number of perspectives, identifying issues of common interest to Terminology and ESP and charting the relations between Languages for Special Purposes and the domains they articulate. The importance of domain specification is highlighted for the practice of both Terminology and ESP, using illustrations from a number of domains. Modern dynamic notions of “domain” are then shown to be a relatively recent phenomenon, as knowledge became more specialised during the 20th century. The paper ends with a brief case study which leads to the conclusion that a reformulation of the original “what” question to a “where” question would be more productive in so far as authors and translators do not communicate in domains, they communicate in texts for which genre is a key concept for both production and analysis.

The purpose of this article is to review the domain of ethical decision making in supply chain management for the purpose of suggesting how further research in this area may be developed. We examine the evolving nature of supply chain management and current efforts to include ethical decision making in supply chain management decision making. We show that, while there is growing concern with ethics, corporate social responsibility, and sustainability, the current state of the field is fragmented with the majority of articles reviewed focusing on specific issues rather than a more holistic approach. We then review ethical decision making models from Ferrell and Gresham (1985) and Hunt and Vitell (1986) widely used in analyzing marketing ethics and use these models to suggest a framework for ethical decision making in supply chain management.

The authors have constructed a model for choosing between ten structural steel and concrete forms for an office block on the basis of a number of decision criteria, including cost, initial embodied energy, frame construction time and overall construction time. A multi-criteria decision model was utilised within this analysis, resulting in a ranking from 1 to 10 of the different structural options. A centrally important part of the modelling process was the assignment of importance weightings by different stakeholders to the four criteria, with these weightings then input directly into the multi-criteria decision model. Stakeholders were divided into different groupings with potentially significant inputs into the planning/design/construction process, including engineers, architects, planners, contractors and developers. The decision model was then run using each set of weightings derived from the weighting preferences of the different groupings. This paper outlines the method used to derive the weightings, analyses the effect the different weighting inputs have on the rankings of the ten structural options examined, and thus demonstrates how the views of the various stakeholders in this decision-making process regarding the choice of an optimal structural form can be accommodated using a weighted multi-criteria decision model.

When conducting or evaluating cross-cultural/cross-national research studies a critical question must be asked about the measurements: are they culturally an emic or etic? That is, is the research methodology culturally bound or culture free? The research described in this paper shows how etic and emic properties may be explored by using the Ethicality Scale developed by Albaum and Peterson (2006) and demonstrates that it is at best an imposed etic scale. In doing so, this research confirms Adler’s (1991) view that similarity across cultures should be proven rather than assumed. It also raises questions about the frequent assumption of implied or imposed etic validity in cross cultural/cross-national research.

Background: Many palliative cancer patients spend much of their last year at home. In the UK, district nurses make frequent support visits to patients and carers at this time, yet surprisingly little is known about their supportive role in palliative care. Current studies are limited to district nurses’ reports of practice, which offer limited insight into their content. Patients’ and carers’ views on district nurse support visits are largely unknown. Aim: To present findings of a multi-perspective study that explored how district nurse early support visits are both described and carried out. Design: Focus groups with district nurses to explore views on the purpose of early support visits. Observation of support visits to identify how they are conducted. Patient and carer interviews to elucidate and verify district nurse data. Setting and participants: Participants included 58 district nurses, 10 palliative care patients and nine carers from four Primary Care Trusts in contrasting urban and rural locations. Results: District nurses had difficulty articulating early support visits. Observations however revealed a complex role comprising extensive physical and practical assessments, practical interventions, information giving, liaison, facilitation and referral. Patients and carers confirmed that they felt valued, reassured and supported by district nurses. Conclusions: A multi-perspective approach provided new insights into district nurse support visits. Monitoring work described appears to have additional psycho-social benefits for patients and carers. The supportive role of district nurses needs to be clearly articulated and recognised so that colleagues, patients and carers access this valuable resource for palliative care patients.

An understanding of children’s own perspectives on their relationships and experience is essential in developing a comprehensive ‘whole child’ perspective on well-being in all its domains. Eliciting authentic accounts of children’s experience requires an approach which positions children as key informants, central to the research enterprise. This article reports some of the findings of a neighbourhood based study which sought to explore aspects of children’s daily lives, particularly those autonomous spaces of childhood away from the gaze and direction of adults, within which children enact and transact their daily lives. The study findings reveal the children to be significant users of their neighbourhood with detailed local knowledge and expertise and a unique perspective on the opportunities and risks they encounter. Their social relationships, especially their friends and friendships, were found to be critical to their sense of satisfaction, in tandem with the opportunity the neighbourhood terrain afforded for physically active movement and play. Friends and friendship are experienced by children as essential to their well-being and play is the means by which they actualise this key relationship. Consistently the children named ‘space’ and ‘friends’ as the things that they most liked about their neighbourhood.

This article examines multi-year transportation efficiency of OECD countries using data envelopment analysis to determine efficiency scores. Both economic variables, freight hauled, value added, and economic contribution; and ecological variables, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, are included in the model. Also presented are the calculations of economic and ecological indices used to evaluate economic performance relative to CO2 emissions and success in controlling emissions relative to economic performance, respectively. The results indicate a strong tradeoff between economic and emissions inclusive efficiency and that both types of efficiency are difficult to develop and maintain over time.

Background Patients are living longer with incurable cancer, and for most of the time, they are at home. Psychological morbidity is high and increases with advanced disease and poor prognosis, and evidence suggests that patients' psychological needs at this time are not met. District nurses provide support visits to patients for long periods before they die. Little is known about district nurses' skills in detecting patients' concerns and meeting psychological needs. Objective The aim of the study was to explore how UK district nurses describe and conduct early support visits with palliative patients and patients' perceptions of visits. We report 1 aspect of the findings: psychological assessment and support provided during early support visits at home. Methods Six focus group were conducted with 53 district nurses. Interactions between 10 patients, their carers, and district nurses were observed and audio recorded during home visits. Patients and carers were also interviewed before and after the observation visits. Data were analyzed using a thematic approach. Results District nurses described assessing and meeting patients' psychological needs informally through "chatting." Observation of practice, however, revealed avoidance behaviors when faced with patients' psychological concerns, exemplified by the statement "moving swiftly on," which was 1 district nurse's response to a patient's overt distress. Implications for practice District nurses have a potentially important role in assessing and meeting cancer patients' psychological needs, but appear to lack confidence and skills. District nurses need to be taught a simple intervention based on active listening and problem solving to assess and manage mild psychological morbidity.
