PurposeThis essay was written as a university assignment for an expert dementia practice module as part of the Masters in Applied Professional Practice. This paper aims to provide a critical discussion of the recognition and management of delirium superimposed on dementia.Design/methodology/approachThe findings of this paper showed that the recognition of delirium superimposed of dementia is not well recognized, but early intervention and management can result in preferential outcomes. This requires the use of appropriate recognition tools and for all health-care staff to have specific training within this area.FindingsEducation is imperative to improving delirium recognition.Research limitations/implicationsEducation is imperative to improving awareness.Practical implicationsThe research implications of this paper demonstrate that appropriate training and education of health-care staff is imperative for the timely recognition of delirium and the improvement of care.Originality/valueThis paper was undertaken as an assignment for the University of Highlands and Islands.

Current understandings of worker mobilisation against factory closure and capital migration in Britain are dominated by the perspectives of male industrial workers. The narratives of displaced miners, shipbuilders and steel workers are prominent in the historiography and collective memories of deindustrialisation. There is considerably less understanding of the response of female manufacturing workers to these processes and the ways in which women mobilised in opposition to the free movement of capital. This article presents the testimony of Margaret Robertson, shop steward at the Lee Jeans factory in Greenock, Scotland, where the predominantly female workforce conducted a successful seven-month occupation in opposition to proposed closure beginning in February 1981. The contribution highlights the specific gendered challenges encountered by women workers. The occupation occurred in a period of accelerated factory closure in Britain, yet supporting female unionists resisting job loss was not a priority for the male-dominated union executive.

In these competitive times for tourism marketing, “place branding” has become an essential element of a tourist destination’s success, an element of market differentiation with respect to rival tourist areas. Place branding captures the attention of potential tourists using experiential marketing; it creates destination loyalty using techniques such as heritage interpretation to create unique and memorable experiences for visitors. A memorable tourism experience may produce repeat visits and word-of-mouth or active social web promotion of the destination. Heritage interpretation communicates information to visitors and tourists about the sites and destinations they visit. An interpretive plan specifies exactly how heritage interpretation will be used to communicate with potential visitors using oral, written and digitally communicated language. A well-constructed plan is necessary in order to generate tourist income responsibly and sustainably for local communities. This article examines the value-added roles heritage interpretation and interpretive planning play in experiential marketing and in destination management as a whole. It looks at interpretation at the personal on-site level and as used on the internet. The goal of place branding is to allow communities to function as their own destination management organizations and to exert control over their most valuable economic resources, their intangible heritage: landscape, ecosystem, and traditional way of life. The general framework considered is responsible geotourism, designed to improve the quality of life for the host and the quality of experience for the tourist.

In a digitally networked world, traditional narratives of space and place struggle to explain the multiple layers of interactions between people and place at local, national and global levels. The twenty-first century has brought mobility to new levels, where the speed of transactions enables instant communication between people located anywhere and any place—provided they have access to a mobile network. Likewise, whilst the traditional networks exist and flows of goods and people traverse the landscape, the pace of interconnectivity helps bring the outside world to local communities located the world over. This movement of people and goods is transforming lives and expectations of living in ways that are testing past values and moral geographies. Just as geography was the discipline to apply models and systems analysis to understanding our global connections in the 1970s and 80s, geography is a key discipline for learning within these new and evolving worldviews. Geography education can play a critical role in the quest for global understanding in this complex and dynamic world. Sustainable lifestyles, managing natural systems, hybridity and maintaining a sense of place as a citizen in what is becoming an increasingly urban lifestyle for most of the world’s people requires an adaptable conceptual framework. Geography is the discipline which provides the most comprehensive overview of space and place interaction. Simple constructs such as the basics of everyday life help provide a lens into this world of complexity and help to nurture understanding and tolerance of diversity.

Imagining futures is challenging planners, policy-makers and educators alike. For young people growing up in our increasingly urbanised landscapes, new imaginaries are needed. Some of the complexities emerging in urban ecology are considered through an overview of geographical traditions and research findings reporting perspectives of young people past, recent and projected. Recent research relates to experiences of young people living in the Australian city of Melbourne. Educational challenges ahead for schooling in new urban spaces provide opportunities for geography education to provide curriculum leadership in the change processes needed.
