Abstract

A city is an organism made of social, economic, cultural, and environmental fabrics, the interactions of which determine the form and functioning of city life. Different disciplines are then involved in analyzing the complex processes of the 21st-century city. The aim of this study was to explore the use of an analytical method that can act as a catalyst for the main players involved in the environmental urban morphology (EUM). This multidisciplinary methodology focuses on the study of public space in dense urban fabrics as a key context for understanding a city. Operationally, the work shows the potential of integrating morphological analysis, pedestrian flow analysis, and environmental analysis and applying them in dense and compact urban fabrics. The first of these analyses methods was carried out using urban survey tools and the geographic information system (GIS) in order to detect the physical forms of the city and develop a number of morphological maps. The second, using the global positioning system (GPS) and on-site detectors, maps pedestrian movement within public spaces. The latter mainly focuses on the microclimatic analysis of public spaces and outdoor comfort, carried out using environmental software such as ENVI-met (4.4 version). The ultimate goal of this study was to achieve the definition of a dynamic, multidisciplinary, and multilayer methodology for the analysis of dense urban fabrics which we believe could be very useful for addressing the regenerative processes of the contemporary city., Environmental Technology and Design

Abstract

A city is an organism made of "fabrics". Social, economic, cultural, smart and environmental fabrics, on whose interaction depends the form, the functioning and the very life of a city, its urban fabrics, its public spaces. Reading and designing the city of the 21st century is therefore a complex process that involves very different needs, interests and disciplines. The aim of this research is to develop an analysis and design methodology capable of acting as a catalyst for all the main players involved in the strategies of Sustainable Urban Design. At the basis of the methodological approach lies the concept of Public Space as the preferential place for reading, designing and living a city. Operationally, the proposed methodology rests on three main disciplinary areas (and three con-sequents working toolkits): Urban Surveying, Environmental Analysis, Urban Morphology. Through the first, conducted with graphic rendering softwares and laser scanner, it is possible to detect the physical forms of the city, to read its historical and material consistency. The second focuses its attention mainly on the microclimatic analysis of public spaces and outdoor comfort, using sophisticated environmental softwares such as Envi-met, LadyBug etc. Finally, the third area is particularly important. Urban Morphology, due to its multilayer character is the discipline capable of keeping all the others together, allowing them to interact. The tools adopted for this purpose are the Morphological Map, the Geographic Information System_QGIS, the Global Positioning System_GPS. The synergistic union of these three areas allows the development of a dynamic, multilayer and transdisciplinary methodology for urban analysis, very useful for guiding the regeneration and transformation processes of the contemporary city.

Abstract

[EN] If the incorporation of the gender perspective in the urban fabric requires a clear prior position in favor of the equality of women and men, it also requires instruments or tools that allow it to be effectively incorporated into practice. Urban morphology studies offer a holistic view that tries to encompass the phenomenon of living together, in all its scales and in all its complexity, as well as the tool of the morphological map that tries to offer an ordered way of working, in the search for what makes urban fabrics vital, diverse and close. In this context, the Guide for the incorporation of the gender perspective prepared by Generalitat Valenciana, also tries to provide tools that help to become aware of how complex projecting a space or place is, so that in the future it to be vital, diverse and, therefore, safe. Both strategies could be linked so that the relationship between the parts and the whole can be seen from a gender perspective, what could facilitate the task of both those who plan and those who supervise., [ES] Si la incorporación de la perspectiva de género en el tejido urbano requiere una clara posición previa a favor de la igualdad de mujeres y hombres, también requiere instrumentos o herramientas que permitan incorporarla efectivamente en la práctica. Los estudios de morfología urbana ofrecen una mirada holística que trata de abarcar el fenómeno de habitar juntos, en todas sus escalas y en toda su complejidad, así como la herramienta del mapa morfológico que trata de ofrecer una manera de trabajar ordenada, en la búsqueda de aquello que hace que los tejidos urbanos sean vitales, diversos y próximos. En este contexto, la Guía para la incorporación de la perspectiva de género elaborada desde la Generalitat Valenciana, también trata de aportar herramientas que ayuden a tomar conciencia de lo complejo que resulta proyectar un espacio o lugar para que en el futuro sea vital, diverso y, por tanto, seguro. 13. On the Thermal Resilience of Venetian Open Spaces

Abstract

Venice is known for its urban heritage fragility. The city is experiencing an increase in yearly average temperatures affecting outdoor–indoor comfort and average energy expenditure. Owing to existing literature demonstrating how local microclimate depends on urban density, form, and materials, this investigation studies the influence of the changing local climate on Venetian vernacular open spaces, known as Campi. Based on the comparison of contemporary weather and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) future predictions for the 2050 scenario, this investigation highlights how Campi’s open spaces and the surrounding buildings, canals, and green public areas contribute to building climate resilience. By employing advanced modelling, the study analyses microclimate and outdoor comfort with respect to users’ perception of Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET). The ENVI-met tool is used to simulate the thermal behaviour of two representative Campi: SS. Giovanni e Paolo and S. Polo. Despite significant temperature growths, Venetian urban fabric characteristics seem to play a crucial role in strengthening the climate resilience of open spaces, thus preserving outdoor comfort quality in a warmer future. The analysis shows how the historical matrix of open spaces and buildings cooperate. Abstract

[EN] The themes of reduce, recycle, reuse are at the heart of the challenges that the global society of the XXI century is facing. At the same time, more than two-thirds of the world population lives in cities nominating the latters to play a central role in the near future. For this reason, the search for a methodology for the redevelopment of the historical urban fabrics appears today extremely interesting. Complexity, richness and stratification of the latters make them definitely the most convincing test to set a scientific strategy for the project of urban transformations. But stratification means complexity and complex are the phenomena that characterize the XXI century society. The only convincing way then for the analysis of these phenomena is that of the multi-disciplinarity. The proposed methodology is structured, thus, around a number of disciplines (Urban Morphology, Sustainability, Urban Regulation, Economic Evaluation and Urban Design) on which to set the reading of the urban fabric with special attention to the so called “urban voids” namely all those situations in which the tissue is interrupted due to slumping and demolitions. This aspect is very important because if, on the one hand, it is in these areas where key tissue analysis problems can be seen, on the other hand, it is always from these areas that the main urban, social and economical transformation opportunities can take boot. A Due Diligence of the “urban voids” organised in datasheets/base (for each area) concludes the analysis. The different disciplinary fields work then in a complementary way within a single methodological approach laying the scientific basis for the interventions of urban regeneration within the historic fabric of Valencia.

17. Urban Morphology and Sustainability: towards a shared design methodology

Abstract

[EN] The information revolution is radically transforming the very foundation of the ‘fossil city’. A ‘virtual’ macro-urbanism will intersect with an ‘actual’ micro-urbanism, physical and concrete, determining the form of the new urban environment. Within the binomial of macro- and micro- urbanism, urban morphology identifies an interesting socio-building scale that can serve as the basic strategy for sustainable city planning in the twenty-first century. Morphology thus becomes the necessary ‘plug-in’ for registering the different ‘networks’ that characterize the contemporary city – from IT and ‘smart’ devices to energy and environmental systems - translating these networks into building practices, into ‘fabrics’, for the physical city. At this purpose an Urban Design methodology has been developed in order to combine the Urban Morphology tools with those of Sustainability giving particular attention to the topics of the comfort outdoor and the passive environmental control systems. The methodology has then been applied in the Sant Adrià De Besos Waterfront Regeneration Project in Barcelona. Neighbourhood’s size, complexity and localisation, between the sea and a large area of brown fields at the northern gateway of the Catalan capital, has set up an interesting testing bench. A sequence of consecutive steps characterizes the methodology in which morphology, architecture and sustainability intersect one another within a single design process.

Abstract

This paper investigates the complexity of the urban fabric, from the urban scale to the building and neighbourhood scale, by using the concepts and tools of urban morphology according to the Muratorian School. Specifically, basic concepts such as ‘urban polarities’, ‘routes hierarchical system’ and ‘building neighbourhood’ are used. They are deployed in the walled city of Ahmedabad, India, which has a rich architectural heritage clearly recognizable in Indo-Islamic monuments and particularly in aggregative structures called pols.
