Abstract

Abstract Background Peak width of Skeletonized Mean Diffusivity (PSMD), as a novel marker of white matter (WM) microstructure damage, is associated with cognitive decline in several WM pathologies (i.e., small vessel disorders). We hypothesized that markers combining alterations in whole WM could be associated with cognitive dysfunction in relapsing‐remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients. Methods We used PSMD based on tract‐based spatial statistics (TBSS) of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) magnetic resonance (MR) scans. We investigated RRMS patients (n = 73) undergoing interferon beta (IFN‐β) therapy. In this cross‐sectional study, we investigated the association between neuropsychological data and clinical and MRI variables: PSMD, WM hypointensities, and normalized brain volume (NBV). Results In our cohort, 37 (50.7%) patients were recognized as cognitively impaired (CI) and 36 (49.3%) patients were cognitively normal (CN). Abstract

Background: There is an unmet need for treatment options for generalised myasthenia gravis that are effective, targeted, well tolerated, and can be used in a broad population of patients. We aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of efgartigimod (ARGX-113), a human IgG1 antibody Fc fragment engineered to reduce pathogenic IgG autoantibody levels, in patients with generalised myasthenia gravis. Methods: ADAPT was a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 3 trial done at 56 neuromuscular academic and community centres in 15 countries in North America, Europe, and Japan. Patients aged at least 18 years with generalised myasthenia gravis were eligible to participate in the study, regardless of anti-acetylcholine receptor antibody status, if they had a Myasthenia Gravis Activities of Daily Living (MG-ADL) score of at least 5 (>50% non-ocular), and were on a stable dose of at least one treatment for generalised myasthenia gravis. Patients were randomly assigned by interactive response technology (1:1) to efgartigimod (10 mg/kg) or matching placebo, administered as four infusions per cycle (one infusion per week), repeated as needed depending on clinical response no sooner than 8 weeks after initiation of the previous cycle. Patients, investigators, and clinical site staff were all masked to treatment allocation. The primary endpoint was proportion of acetylcholine receptor antibody-positive patients who were MG-ADL responders (≥2-point MG-ADL improvement sustained for ≥4 weeks) in the first treatment cycle. The primary analysis was done in the modified intention-to-treat population of all acetylcholine receptor antibody-positive patients who had a valid baseline MG-ADL assessment and at least one post-baseline MG-ADL assessment. The safety analysis included all randomly assigned patients who received at least one dose or part dose of efgartigimod or placebo. This trial is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT03669588); an open-label extension is ongoing (ADAPT+, NCT03770403). Findings: Between Sept 5, 2018, and Nov 26, 2019, 167 patients (84 in the efgartigimod group and 83 in the placebo group) were enrolled, randomly assigned, and treated. 129 (77%) were acetylcholine receptor antibody-positive. Abstract

Optically induced birefringence has been analysed in a series of analogous diols containing heteroatoms, such as O, N or S. The presence of a heteroatom in a diol molecule can change the arrangement of hydrogen bonding and, consequently, the arrangement of molecules. This hypothesis was confirmed by the results of our study. The measurements were performed at temperatures from 280 to 350 K. The values of the absolute and molar Kerr constants were calculated. The character and magnitude of the temperature changes of molar Kerr constant depend on the type of the heteroatom. According to the theory of the optical Kerr effect such a temperature behaviour indicates the presence of molecular interactions leading to formation of molecular aggregates. The sign of the calculated values of angular correlation factor indicates the predominant parallel arrangement of molecules in such molecular ensembles.

Abstract

Results of the optical Kerr effect study in a mixture of carbon disulphide vapour and the air are presented. The measurements were made as a function of temperature and carbon disulphide concentration. Molar Kerr constant, polarisability and optical anisotropy for carbon disulphide molecules were calculated assuming the formulae derived within the statistical-molecular theory of the optically induced birefringence.

Abstract

Abstract Intravenous recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA) is, besides mechanical thrombectomy, the highest class evidence based reperfusion treatment of acute ischemic stroke (AIS). The biggest concern of the therapy is symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH), which occurs in 3–7% of all treated patients, and is associated with worse functional outcome. Finding a method of the powerful identification of patients at highest risk of sICH, in order to increase the percentage of stroke patients safely treated with rtPA, is one of the most important challenges in stroke research. To address this problem, we designed a complex project to identify blood, neuroimaging, and clinical biomarkers combined for prospective assessment of the risk of rtPA-associated ICH. In this paper we present results of blood proteomic and peptide analysis of pilot 41 AIS patients before rtPA administration (the test ICH group, n = 9 or the controls, without ICH, n = 32). We demonstrated that pre-treatment blood profiles of 15 proteins differ depending on whether the patients develop rtPA-associated ICH or not. SWATH-MS quantification of serum or plasma proteins might allow for robust selection of blood biomarkers to increase the prospective assessment of rtPA-associated ICH over that based solely on clinical and neuroimaging characteristics.

Abstract

Both marine and urban aerosols, which differ in their origin and chemical composition, are subjected to strong dynamic processes in the coastal areas, especially over strongly urbanised areas. The simultanteous presence of both types of aerosols leads to their effective mixing due to the action of winds and convection. This work presents examples of interactions of the two types of aerosols and the impact of the dynamic atmospheric processes on migration of aerosol masses, at two locations in Athens and Kolobrzeg.

Temperature dependencies of the optical Kerr effect have been studied for a series of four analogous diols (of which three contained a heteroatom). The molar Kerr constant was found to increase with temperature below the room temperature and decrease above. The magnitude and character of this change depended on the kind of the heteroatom.

Abstract

Temperature dependence of the optical Kerr effect was studied in solutions of 1.4, 2.6, and 4.5% n,n- dimethylnitramine in benzene. The optical Kerr constant was observed to decrease with increasing temperature (from 290 to 360K). For solutions of higher concentrations, the temperature dependencies of the OKE signal indicate an increasing role of intermolecular interactions.

Abstract

The paper reports results of the optical Kerr effect investigation in the mixture of carbon disulphide and the air. Measurements were performed as a function of temperature and CS2 concentration. Assuming the statistical-molecular theory of the optically induced birefringence, the values of the optical and molar Kerr constants as well as polarizability and optical anisotropy were found. The observed deviations of the temperature dependence of Kerr effect from the theoretical predictions indicate the presence of strong molecular interactions in the studied mixtures.© (1997) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Abstract

The paper reports results of the temperature studies of the optical Kerr effect in p-nitrotoluene and p-dichlorobenzene. The measurements were carried out in the temperature range from 330 to 360 K. The values of Kerr constants for both liquids were determined. The temperature dependence of the optical Kerr effect for p-nitrotoluene revealed deviations from the theoretical predictions which indicates the presence of strong dipolar interactions in this liquid, hindering optical orientation of its molecules.© (1997) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
