Abstract

The purpose of this study is to better understand incivility in academia amongst science, technology, engineering and math fields (STEM). Specifically, we are interested in how graduate students in STEM at a large, midwestern, R1 university understand and conceptualize incivility (i.e., bullying or rudeness) within their fields. Furthermore, we aim to investigate the relationship between interpersonal discrimination (i.e., discrimination or rudeness based on identity) and more general incivility, as well as the relationship between interpersonal discrimination, incivility, and harassment. Qualitative interviews with PhD students in STEM will be conducted to best understand students’ thought processes and conceptualizations.

We aim to explore the relationships between self-reported repetitive negative thinking (anxious apprehension/rumination) and other dimensions of anxiety (anxious arousal, social anxiety), susceptibility to gender-based stereotype threat, and executive functioning challenges (tested via the BRIEF-A).
