Abstract

The number of people living with chronic diseases is rising worldwide and the burden of chronic diseases is likewise increasing rapidly. Chronic diseases are a challenge to both patients and their relatives but also health care delivery is challenged by these demographic and health changes. Being chronically ill, these patients needs to cope and manage their disease and patient involvement are increasingly recognized as beneficial to chronic disease management. Research has shown improved health outcomes when patients with chronic diseases are involved in the management of their own health condition and when their individual needs are taken into account. Globally, there is an increasing interest in patient involvement in health care, however, research evaluating patient involvement in the encounter between general practice and patients with chronic disease is limited. Thus, the aim of this scoping review is to map existing research regarding patient involvement in the encounter between general practice and patients with chronic disease with a specific focus on patients’ and GP’s notions and experience of involvement.

Topics discussed include ethicist Richard McCormick's guideline for the establishment of a reasonable moral criteria for selective nontreatment focuses on an infant's ability to establish and benefit from human relationships and his argument that the ability for experiencing human love and relationships is that gives a human person's life value.
