No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2020-05-29 The common black field cricket, Gryllus assimilis (Orthoptera: Gryllidae), damages young plants of red cedar, Juniperus virginiana (Cupressaceae); strawberry, Fragaria × ananassa (Rosaceae); sugarcane, Saccharum officinarum (Poaceae); teak, Tectona grandis (Lamiaceae); upland cotton, Gossypium hirsutum (Malvaceae); and, mainly, Eucalyptus spp. (Myrtaceae). The objective of this study was to investigate the biological and behavioral parameters of this insect in the laboratory and in Eucalyptus spp. plantations in Inhambupe, Bahia State, Brazil. The incubation period and the viability of G. assimilis eggs were 11.87 days and approximately 22%, respectively. The duration of the nymphal stage was 62.34 days with approximately 60% of the nymphs obtained in the laboratory being females. The average number of egg batches per female, eggs per female, and eggs per batch per female of this insect were 25.50, 862.17, and 34.65, respectively. G. assimilis females lived for 76.50 days in the adult stage, and 138.34 days in total, from egg through nymph to adult. Males produced three characteristic sounds: one for the marking of territory, one for courtship, and one when alone. G. assimilis fed primarily on weeds but, in their absence, it damaged young Eucalyptus spp. plants. This paper presents important data on the biology and behavior of G. assimilis; this information may encourage additional biological research, laboratory rearing, and integrated management of this pest. This exotic wasp damages Schinus terebinthifolia Raddi drupes in native forests and ecological restoration areas in Brazil. The objective of the present study was to investigate the precipitation, temperature and relative humidity effects on M. transvaalensis flight activity, and to determine the parasitism rate and sex ratio of this wasp on S. terebinthifolia plants. The study was conducted with yellow sticky traps and S. terebinthifolia drupes collected in an ecological restoration area, from August 2014 to September 2015, in the Sorocaba municipality, Sao Paulo state, Brazil. Megastigmus transvaalensis populations were negatively correlated with maximum and minimum temperatures and precipitation, with population peaks at the end of May 2015, with 927 insects per evaluation (48.8 adults per trap). The M. transvaalensis sex ratio was higher in the laboratory (0.42) than in the field (0.08). The parasitism rate of S. terebinthifolia drupes by M. transvaalensis ranged from zero to 36.3% under natural environmental conditions. Megastigmus transvaalensis can be monitored with yellow sticky traps. Damage by M. transvaalensis in S. terebinthifolia drupes may decrease the germination of the seeds and the establishment of this plant in native and restoration ecological areas. The parasitism capacity of Palmistichus elaeisis (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) was evaluated on pupae of these lepidopteran pests as well as on 2 commonly used alternative hosts, Anticarsia gemmatalis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Tenebrio molitor (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae). The number of parasitoids produced per mg of host pupal biomass was significantly greater on H. anchisiades capys and T. molitor compared with the other 3 lepidopteran species. The mean number of parasitoids emerging per host pupa was also significantly more on H. anchisiades capys compared with C. anthonilis, M. themisto, A. gemmatalis, or T. molitor. All host species tested in this study show the potential to be used in mass rearing P elaeisis in the laboratory. However, the lower parasitism and emergence of P. elaeisis on H. anchisiades capys pupae suggests that this lepidopteran pest may not be a suitable host for this parasitoid in the field. The management of Hylesia nanus (Walker, 1855) (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae: Hemileucinae), a defoliator of Eucalyptus spp. (Myrtales: Myrtaceae), was evaluated on the northern coast of Bahia state, Brazil by performing three connected experiments: (1) monitoring of H. nanus moths using light traps; (2) biological control of H. nanus pupae releasing the endoparasitoid Palmistichus elaeisis Delvare & La Salle, 1993 (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae: Chalcidoidea), and (3) chemical control of H. nanus larvae with one spraying of Talstar 100 EC + Agral. The light traps effectively assisted the monitoring and control of H. nanus moths, with a population peak of 7,392.85 individuals collected in a single nocturnal period. Palmistichus elaeisis was recovered from the H. nanus pupae 96 hours post release with parasitism rate of 22.58 ± 2.95%, indicating its ability to parasitize and contribute towards insect control in the field. Besides, this parasitoid can be integrated with the monitoring using light traps. Chemical control was highly effective against the last instar H. nanus larvae, with only 10.5 ± 3.0 larvae survivors per treetrunk 24 hours post spraying. Thus, the monitoring using light traps, control of pupae by releasing P. elaeisis released, and chemical control of last instar larvae are methods that can be integrated into a management plan for H. nanus in the field. Key Words: chemical control; light trap; Palmistichus elaeisis ; Tachinidae Resumo O manejo de Hylesia nanus Walker (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae), um desfolhador de especies de Eucalyptus (Myrtales: Myrtaceae), foi avaliado no litoral norte do estado da Bahia, Brasil atraves da realizacao de tres experimentos conectados: (1) monitoramento de mariposas de H. nanus utilizando armadilhas luminosas, (2) controle biologico de pupas de H. nanus liberando o endoparasitoide Palmistichus elaeisis Delvare & La Salle (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) e (3) controle quimico de larvas de H. nanus com uma pulverizacao de bifentrina + etilenoxi. As armadilhas luminosas assistiram de forma eficaz o monitoramento e controle de mariposas de H. nanus , com um pico populacional medio (± EP) de 801 ± 438 individuos coletados por armadilha em um periodo noturno de 23 d. Palmistichus elaeisis foi recuperado das pupas de H. nanus 96 h apos a liberacao com taxa de parasitismo de 23 ± 3%, indicando uma capacidade de parasitar e contribuir para o controle de insetos no campo. Alem disso, este parasitoide pode ser integrado com o monitoramento com armadilhas luminosas. O controle quimico foi altamente eficaz contra as larvas de ultimo instar de H. nanus , com apenas 11 ± 3 larvas sobreviventes por caule 24 h apos a pulverizacao. Assim, o monitoramento de mariposas utilizando armadilhas luminosas, controle de pupas utilizando P. elaeisis liberado e controle quimico das larvas de ultimo instar sao metodos que podem ser integrados em um plano de manejo para H. nanus. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the recovery of S. neseri after its initial release on Eucalyptus plants in Brazil and to provide data on its biology. Selitrichodes neseri was imported from South Africa to Brazil for the biological control of L. invasa, in Mar 2015, and recovered from Aug 2015 to Dec 2016. Successful recovery of this parasitoid shows its potential to become established in the field. Seedlings of 2 hybrids obtained from crosses between rose gum Eucalyptus grandis W. Hill. ex Maiden and flooded gum Eucalyptus urophylla S. T. Blake and between Eucalyptus sp. and (river red gum Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh. x E. grandis) showed potential as hosts for culture of S. neseri on L. invasa in the laboratory because up until the adult parasitoid emergence these seedlings did not wilt. When reared at 25.1 to 26.0 degrees C, the total number of parasitoids and the proportion of male parasitoids were highest, relative to hosts reared at 26.1 to 27.0 degrees C. Peak emergence of S. neseri occurred 28 d after parasitism. Posteriormente, determinaram-se os níveis de severidade em função da distribuição da amostra, sendo sete níveis para folhas jovens e seis para folhas adultas. Para o teste de acuidade visual e validação da escala, as folhas foram submetidas à avaliação da severidade, com e sem escala. Com a adoção das escalas propostas, a totalidade dos avaliadores apresentou boa acurácia, tanto para folhas jovens como para adultas com R2=0,98 e R2=0,80, respectivamente. A importância da elaboração de escalas diagramáticas para quantificar a severidade de mancha em eucalipto deve-se ao fato de permitir a quantificação dos sintomas de forma acurada e precisa.

During the study 53 yellow sticky traps were installed and 53 branches were collected from a 19 ha plot of E. camaldulensis plantation per evaluation. A total of 42 evaluations was made from January 2006 to 2008. The number of adults of G. brimblecombei and P. bliteus caught in the yellow sticky traps as well as the immature and mummies of the parasitized psyllids on E. camaldulensis leaves varied with seasons. The population also varies according to the season, with a peak in the winter and decreases in the summer when temperature and rainfall increase. The G. brimblecombei and P. bliteus populations were inversely correlated with temperature and rainfall. These results are discussed as potential limitations to the establishment of the pest and its parasitoid. ABSTRACT The leaf spot (Mycosphaerella leaf disease = MLD) caused by Teratosphaeria nubilosa has caused damage in eucalypt plantations in southern and southeastern Brazil. The need to assess the disease in the field to evaluate of this damage, efficiency control, evaluation of germplasm induces to the necessity of having a visual scale for evaluation of disease. The objective was to develop a diagrammatic scale for young leaves and one for adult leaves of Eucalyptus globules for MLD. To do so, the leaves collected in the field were scanned for image analysis. The damaged area, the healthy leaf area and the external area of the same scale RGB (Red, Green, Blue) were determined. Subsequently, it was determinate the levels of severity depending on the sample distribution with seven levels for young leaves and six for adult leaves. For the visual acuity test and validate the scale, the leaves were evaluated for severity, with and without scale. With this proposed scales, the assessors showed good accuracy both for young and adult leaves with R2=0,98 and R2=0,80, respectively. The importance of the development of diagrammatic scales for assessing MLD in eucalyptus must to the fact that allows quantification of the symptoms accurately and precisely.

Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus spp.) naturally occurs in Australia, Indonesia and neighboring islands such as Flores, Alor and Wetar. The genus Eucalyptus belongs to the Myrtaceae family, with around 600 species and sub-species, and shows high plasticity and worldwide dispersion, growing satisfactorily under different edaphoclimatic conditions and surpassing those of the regions of origin. Less than 1 % of these 600 species have been used for industrial purposes. In essence, the use of eucalyptus in the worldwide industry is based on two species, mainly: E. globulus, E. grandis and their hybrids with E. urophylla, and hybrids between E. saligna and E. camaldulensis, planted in large scale in Brazil. These Eucalyptus trees are used for the production of paper, cellulose, wood, coal, cluster, sawmill, furniture, oils for pharmaceutical industries, honey, windbreak, and in civil construction and ornamentation.

Para avaliar eficiência e viabilidade econômica de fungicidas no controle da ferrugem do eucalipto, montou-se um ensaio a campo. Para a instalação do ensaio, utilizou-se o delineamento em blocos ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 3 x 3 (3 produtos e 3 doses), sendo 0,5, 1,0 e 1,5 mL ou g do produto comercial por litro de solução. Os tratamentos foram: 1-) Testemunha; 2-) Fungicida azoxistrobina (estrobilurina); 3-) Fungicida tebuconazol (triazol); 4-) Fungicida tebuconazol + trifloxistrobina (triazol + estrobilurina). O experimento constou de quatro repetições, com avaliação da severidade das plantas. As avaliações foram efetuadas com base no percentual de área foliar lesionada. Verificou-se que com o aumento na dosagem dos fungicidas, houve maior redução da doença nas plantas aos 7 e 15 dias pós-aplicação. O fungicida tebuconazol + trifloxistrobina a 1,5 mL/L foi o mais eficiente contra a ferrugem do eucalipto em condições de campo. O fungicida tebuconazol apresentou maior viabilidade econômica nas três doses testadas. Originally from South America, eucalyptus rust is caused by the fungus Puccinia psidii, and has become a limiting disease for eucalyptus cultivation in Brazil, requiring the adoption of control measures, for example the chemical control. To evaluate the efficiency and economic viability of fungicides to control eucalyptus rust, a test has set up in the field. The experimental design adopted for the test has randomized blocks, 3 x 3 (3 products and 3 doses) in factorial arrangement, with 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 mL or g of commercial product per liter of solution. The treatments were: 1-) control; 2-) Fungicide azoxystrobin (strobilurins); 3-) Fungicide tebuconazole (triazole); 4-) Fungicide tebuconazole + trifloxystrobin (triazole + strobilurins). Four replicates were used to assess plant disease severity based on the percentage of damaged leaf area. Higher fungicide doses led to a greater reduction of the disease in the plants at 7 and 15 days after the application. The fungicide tebuconazole + trifloxystrobin at 1.5 mL / L was the most efficient against eucalyptus rust under field conditions. The fungicide tebuconazole was the most economically viable at the three tested doses.
