This study is part of the context of the Research Project signed between the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) and the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology Goiano (IF Goiano) for the development of methodologies with a view to implement and operate an agreement monitoring center. Its objective is to present the tool (software) developed via web to organize the structure of the chain of value of the Ministry of Agriculture's system of agreements, map performance indicators and classify process optimization priorities, based on parameters of efficiency and effectiveness of the reengineering processes. This is applied research in the empirical scenario of the Agreements Sector of MAPA, which uses the case study procedure to achieve its objective. The software development is based on the theoretical framework of Business Process Management (BPM) and Lean Six Sigma, with the application of the GUT Matrix tool and the Eisenhower Matrix for decision making. The primary data were collected through unstructured interviews with nine key informants working in the macro-processes of formalization, execution and monitoring and rendering of accounts of agreements. The results contain the characterization of the MAPA agreement area, highlighting the main activities carried out in the three macroprocesses, the description of the modelling characteristics and functionalities of the developed software and the discussion of benefits arising from the application of information technologies to the Business Process Management (BPM). It can be inferred that the Lean methodology is plausible as a logical “production line”, since it is adaptable to a structured algorithm, which provides an orderly solution of problems focused on continuous improvement.

Copper is an essential micromineral in animal feed; however, when consumed in excess, it can cause liver necrosis, hemolytic crisis, hemoglobinuric nephrosis and death in cattle. Although uncommon in this species, copper poisoning occurs as a result of exacerbated supplementation, deficiency of antagonist microminerals, or previous liver lesions. An outbreak of chronic copper poisoning is reported in semi-confined cattle after supplementation with 50 mg/Kg of dry matter copper. The cattle showed clinical signs characterized by anorexia, motor incoordination, loss of balance, jaundice, brownish or black urine, diarrhea and death, or were found dead, 10 to 302 days after consumption. Of the 35 cattle that died, 20 underwent necropsy, whose frequent findings were jaundice, enlarged liver with evident lobular pattern, black kidneys, and urinary bladder with brownish to blackish content. Microscopically, the liver showed vacuolar degeneration and/or zonal hepatocellular centrilobular or paracentral coagulative necrosis, in addition to cholestasis, mild periacinal fibrosis, apoptotic bodies, and mild to moderate mononuclear inflammation. Degeneration and necrosis of the tubular epithelium and intratubular hemoglobin cylinders were observed in the kidneys. Copper levels in the liver and kidneys ranged from 5,901.24 to 28,373.14 μmol/kg and from 303.72 to 14,021 μmol/kg, respectively. In conclusion, copper poisoning due to excessive nutritional supplementation is an important cause of jaundice, hemoglobinuria, and death in semi-confined cattle.

In this work, we present a hybrid methodology based on ADA, applied to the simulation of pine species from northern Mexico. From algebraic transformations and certain premises, we were able to reduce the parameter space of the Weibull growth function from three parameters to just one, the maximum diameter of the individual at the end of growth. From the point of view of complexity, we have a decrease in computational cost, because now we have only one parameter to estimate, and from a practical point of view, it is an easy parameter to obtain, even in the field. To present the quality of the method, we used the mean absolute percentage error and the quantile regression to visually present the quality of the fit. Then we compare this proposed methodology with the GADA versions for the Chapman–Richards and Hossfeld models. The results presented for the study area, to avoid generalizations, show that the proposed hybrid method was more accurate in the estimates.

Hepatitis E is a zoonotic disease, recognized as an important global public health concern. In this study, molecular detection of the ORF1 and ORF2 genomic regions of the hepatitis E virus (HEV) was carried out in fecal and serum samples from pigs in subsistence farms of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Fragments of the ORF2 region were amplified in 8% (12/150) of fecal samples, with 53.3% (8/15) of farms having positive results. Of the 12 positive samples, fragments of the ORF1 region were amplified in 33.3% (4/12) of these. Molecular characterization confirmed the phylogenetic groupings as HEV subtypes 3d, 3 h, and 3i. The results revealed that meat from pigs that was originally meant for personal consumption is being traded in marketplaces in metropolitan Cuiaba, thereby creating a source of transmission to consumers in Mato Grosso. The environmental conditions must be taken into account when investigating the presence and transmission of HEV.

Computerized microtomography is the gold standard examination for the evaluation of the three-dimensional bone structure. This experiment was developed to evaluate the structure and bone quality of Caiman yacare with metabolic bone disease using high resolution computerized microtomography (μCT). The animals were distributed into four groups: G1 - hyperphosphatemic diet with sun exposure deprivation (n=4), G2 - hyperphosphatemic diet with sun exposure (n=4), G3 - balanced diet with sun exposure deprivation (n=4), and G4 - balanced diet with exposure to sunlight (n=4). The parameters for the trabecular bone (Trabecular Number, Trabecular Thickness, Trabecular Separation, Bone Pattern Factor, Fractal Dimension, Euler Number, Structural Model Index, Degree of Anisotropy, Eigenvalues 1, 2 and 3, and Centroides X, Y and Z), and cortical bone (Number of Closed Pores, Volume of Closed Pores, Surface of Closed Pores, Closed Porosity, Volume of Open Pores, Open Porosity and Total Porosity). The overall results showed that the structure and bone quality of group G3 and G4 were better than those of groups G1 and G2, and that the diet factor influenced more than the sun exposure factor. The computerized microtomography allowed to evaluate the quality of the cortical and trabecular bones of the Pantanal alligator tibia with osteometabolic disease. The diet and sun exposure factors influenced individually the results of the μCT parameters between the groups, demonstrating the functional and structural complexity. Thus, these parameters can contribute to the interpretation of the mechanical behavior of bones and correlate them with the risk of lesions and fractures associated with osteometabolic diseases. RESUMO: Microtomografia computadorizada é o exame padrão-ouro para a avaliação da estrutura tridimensional do osso. Este estudo experimental foi desenvolvido para avaliar a estrutura e a qualidade óssea de jacarés-do-pantanal (Caiman yacare) com doença óssea metabólica utilizando a microtomografia computadorizada (μCT) de Alta Resolução. Os animais foram distribuídos em quatro grupos, G1 - dieta hiperfosfatêmica com privação de luz solar (n=4), G2 - dieta hiperfosfatêmica com exposição à luz solar (n=4), G3 - dieta balanceada com privação de luz solar (n=4) e G4 - dieta balanceada com exposição à luz solar (n=4). Avaliaram-se os parâmetros para o osso trabecular (Número de Trabéculas, Espessura Trabecular, Separação Trabecular, Fator do Padrão Ósseo, Dimensão Fractal, Número de Euler, Índice do Modelo Estrutural, Grau de Anisotropia, Autovalores 1, 2 e 3 e Centroides X, Y e Z) e osso cortical (Número de Poros Fechados, Volume dos Poros Fechados, Superfície de Poros Fechados, Porosidade Fechada, Volume de Poros Abertos, Porosidade Aberta e Porosidade Total). Os resultados gerais evidenciaram que a estrutura e a qualidade óssea dos grupos G3 e G4 foram superiores aos dos grupos G1 e G2, sendo que o fator dieta influenciou mais do que o fator exposição solar. A Microtomografia Computadorizada permitiu avaliar a qualidade dos ossos cortical e trabecular da tíbia de jacarés do pantanal com doença osteometabólica. Os fatores dieta e exposição solar influenciaram individualmente no resultado dos parâmetros do μCT entre os grupos, demonstrando a complexidade funcional e estrutural. Assim, esses parâmetros podem contribuir na interpretação do comportamento mecânico dos ossos e correlacioná-los com o risco de lesões e fraturas associadas às doenças osteometabólicas.

The aim of this study was to evaluate supplementation effects of grazing heifers during mid-to-late of gestation on skeletal muscle development and performance of the progeny until weaning. One hundred and eighty Nellore beef heifers confirmed pregnant (timed AI) to a single sire were allotted to a completely randomized design with 2 treatments. Ninety heifers were fed only mineral (control) and the other 90 were fed a protein supplement (44.5% CP, 0.15% BW) from 90 to 274 days of gestation. Cows were grazed on Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu pastures (5% CP and 64% NDF). At calving, cow–calf pairs were commingled and grazed on the same pasture until weaning. At 30 days after birth, a biopsy was performed to obtain samples of skeletal muscle tissue (Semitendinosus) from calves to determine the number and size of muscle fibre. Least squares mean for all data were computed using PROC MIXED of SAS (SAS Inst. Inc., Cary, NC). Calves from heifers supplemented with protein had greater birth BW (P < 0.001), ADG (P = 0.0147) and BW at 155 d (P = 0.0016) compared with calves from heifers not supplemented. However, calf BW at weaning (P = 0.1508) and gain from birth to weaning (P = 0.1446) did not differ. On the other hand, calves born from dams supplemented with protein had greater muscle fibre number (P = 0.0262), larger diameter of the fiber (P < 0.001), and smaller diameter of the fiber (P < 0.001) compared with calves from heifers not supplemented, although did not differ for mean fiber diameter (P = 0.8079). Fiber volume, fiber perimeter, and volume/area ratio were also affected (P < 0.001) by prepartum supplementation, and were greater on calves whose dams were fed with protein. In conclusion, supplementation of pregnant Nellore heifers with protein during the dry season improves calf birth BW, and promotes hyperplasia and hypertrophy in the skeletal muscle of the offspring.

Background : The Green iguana ( Iguana iguana ) is a reptile belonging to the Iguanidae family. It is an ectothermic animal with arboreal habits and a daytime activity pattern. Leaves, fruits, and eggs are part of their diet. These animals can be found in the South, North and Central America. Free-living Green iguanas may suffer stress during environmental changes, which can lead to a homeostatic imbalance. There is a correlation between stress and anorexia which results in an increase in the occurrence of fractures. Reptile fractures are generally treated by providing rigid stabilization and alignment maintenance. The present study reports the use of locking-plate osteosynthesis in one iguana. Case : One female green iguana, weighing 1.690 kg, was assisted at the Hospital Veterinario Federal da Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso. During anamnesis, it was observed that this iguana was a non-captive animal, which had fallen from a tree. The animal was unable to perform physical movements with the forearm displaying bone crepitation. It was also observed apathy and dehydration. The iguana was subjected to a range of supplementary examinations and on the x-ray image, it was detected that there was a complete right humerus fracture. Following examination, the animal underwent surgery for fracture stabilization. Humerus osteosynthesis was performed with compression in a 1.5 mm 6-hole locking-plate. During the osteosynthesis procedure a morphogenetic graft was inserted. Immediate post-surgery radiographic evaluation was performed, and that confirmed fracture reduction and bone alignment. The animal displayed clinical improvement after the second post-operative day once it returned to regular ingestion of diet. On the 30th post-operative day, the radiographic evaluation showed evidence of bone consolidation. On the 40th post-operative day, the animal displayed satisfactory gait and voluntary ingestion of food, thus enabling its return to the wild. Discussion : In this case study, the iguana displayed a satisfactory body condition score and good bone quality, which suggested a fall from a tree as the cause of the fracture, rather than a metabolic bone disorder. The osteosynthesis procedure followed the principles of orthopaedic surgery. The literature shows that there are reports of osteosynthesis being performed with the aid of intramedullary rod insertion. The intramedullary rods do not neutralize rotational forces, and thus are not recommended for the treatment of transverse fractures, like the one in the present study. A 6-hole 1.5mm locking-plate was inserted during osteosynthesis on this iguana. The protocol used was the one letting just the two middle-locking-plate holes free. This technique provided the advantage of fixation as a means of functional support once the power of the vascular system has not been damaged. In this case study, a bone morphogenetic protein was used in order to induce the differentiation of mesenchymal cells into chondroblasts and osteoblasts. However, whether such a procedure influenced the consolidation of the bone fracture remains unsolved since it was not possible to assess owing to a lack of previous studies to determine the base parameters of the bone healing process in this species. It was observed that osteosynthesis with a locking-plate, effectively consolidated the humerus bone fracture of the Iguana iguana, and enabled its early return to the wild notwithstanding.

SUMMARYA microsporidian infecting the skeletal muscle of hybrid jundiara (Leiarius marmoratus × Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum) in a commercial aquaculture facility in Brazil is described. Affected fish exhibited massive infections in the skeletal muscle that were characterized by large opaque foci throughout the affected fillets. Histologically, skeletal muscle was replaced by inflammatory cells and masses of microsporidial developmental stages. Generally pyriform spores had a wrinkled bi-layer spore wall and measured 4·0 × 6·0 µm. Multinucleate meronts surrounded by a simple plasma membrane were observed. The polar filament had an external membrane and a central electron dense mass. The development of sporoblasts within a sporophorous vesicle appeared synchronized. Ultrastructural observations and molecular analysis of 16S rDNA sequences revealed that the microsporidian was Pleistophora hyphessobryconis. This study is the first report of a P. hyphessobryconis infection in a non-ornamental fish.

Reproductive failure in swine herds is often difficult to diagnose and is important to swine production. The present study aims to identify the potential risk factors (infectious/noninfectious) for stillborn piglets in two commercial swine farms situated in midwestern region of Brazil. The potential risk factors were included in a multivariable logistic model, and the dependent variable was defined as the presence of at least one stillborn piglet in a given litter (yes or no). In the best fit model, two variables from the multivariable analysis, total litter size (p = 0.01), and average birth weight (p = 0.03) were significantly associated with the presence of stillborn piglets at the farms examined in this study. Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) was detected in 29.1 % of the litters. Neither parvovirus (PPV) nor leptospirosis infections were identified in this study, suggesting that they have a minor impact on reproductive disease.

O objetivo deste trabalho é descrever, em três propriedades rurais no Estado de Mato Grosso, a epidemiologia, o quadro clínico e o patológico da obstrução intestinal por fitobezoares em bovinos que pastoreavam em piquetes com predomínio de Stylosanthes sp. pelo menos 60 dias. A morbidade variou de 3,3% a 15% e a mortalidade foi de 100%. O quadro clínico foi de cólica abdominal caracterizado por apatia, anorexia, inquietação, desconforto, sudorese e vocalização, seguido por episódios de diarreia ou diminuição da produção fecal, desidratação, hipomotilidade gastrintestinal, aumento do volume abdominal, decúbito esternal ou lateral com a cabeça voltada para o flanco e morte. O curso clínico foi de 2-7 dias. A principal alteração notada durante a necropsia dos bovinos foi a obstrução intestinal por fitobezoar ovoide de 2-5 cm de diâmetro, frequentemente no duodeno, próximo ao piloro, ocasionalmente em sua porção média. Na área de obstrução notou-se a necrose da parede intestinal que estava enegrecida e intensamente demarcada em relação a segmento adjacente normal, além de intenso espessamento associado a edema, congestão e hemorragia. O abomaso e os segmentos intestinais anteriores a obstrução apresentavam-se repletos de conteúdo alimentar líquido e posteriormente estava com ausência de conteúdo. O rúmen frequentemente tinha grande quantidade de conteúdo liquido a pastoso. Em todos os bovinos necropsiados múltiplas estruturas sólidas, arredondadas ou ovoides, esverdeadas (fitobezoares) foram observadas no abomaso. Estes achados indicam que pastagens com predomínio de Stylosanthes sp. predispõem a formação de fitobezoares, os quais podem levar à obstrução intestinal e morte em bovinos. The clinical and pathological findings of intestinal obstruction caused by phytobezoars in cattle consuming Stylosanthes sp. on three farms in Mato Grosso, Brazil, are described. The morbidity varied from 3.3 to 15% and the mortality was 100%. The animals stayed on pastures with predominance of Stylosanthes sp. for at least 60 days. The overall clinical picture was apathy followed by episodes of diarrhea or reduced feces and separation from the herd. Individual clinical signs were abdominal colic characterized by anorexia, discomfort, gastrointestinal hypomotility, dehydration, increased abdominal size, sweating, vocalization, sternal or lateral recumbence with the head on the flank. The clinical course lasted from 2 to 7 days. At necropsy, duodenal or pyloric obstruction was caused by ovoid phytobezoars of 2-4cm diameter; in the area of obstruction friable intestinal tissue with intense swelling, congestion, edema, and reddish mucosa was found. The rumen, abomasum and duodenum proximal to the site of obstruction was filled with greenish liquid, and absence of food contents was observed distally to the phytobezoars. Histologically, at the site of obstruction, the duodenum exhibited diffuse necrosis of the mucosal surface, thickening of the wall by submucosal edema, neutrophilic infiltration, fibrin deposition, necrosis of smooth muscle fibers, and marked congestion or hemorrhage. Pasture with the predominance of Stylosanthes sp. is a serious problem due to the possibility of phytobezoar formation, thus leading to intestinal obstruction and high mortality rates in cattle.

Os casos foram observados entre os anos de 2007 e 2009. em um rebanho de 40 búfalos, cinco apresentaram emagrecimento progressivo, dorso arqueado, marcha rígida, por vezes com dificuldade para se levantar e locomover, permanecendo apoiando sobre os carpos.Três animais recuperaram-se parcialmente e dois foram eutanasiados in extremis. Os principais achados de necropsia foram calcificação de tecidos moles, principalmente em artérias de grande e médio calibres. A presença de S. glaucophyllum nas pastagens, os sinais clínicos, além dos achados ultrassonográficos e patológicos envolvendo múltiplas calcificações de tendões e outros tecidos, são compatíveis com intoxicação por Solanum glaucophyllum. This report describes the occurrence of enzootic calcinosis in buffaloes in the municipality of Pocone, Mato Grosso, due to the consumption of Solanum glaucophyllum (Sg) [=Solanum malacoxylon]. The cases were observed in the years 2007 and 2009. In a herd of 40 buffaloes, five showed weight loss, arched back, stiff gait, sometimes difficulty to raise and walk, and leaning on the carpus. Three buffaloes recovered partially and two were euthanized in extremis. The main necropsy findings were calcification of soft tissues, especially of large and medium arteries. The presence of S. glaucophyllum in the pasture, clinical signs, in addition to the sonographic and pathologic calcification involving tendons and other tissues, are consistent with Solanum glaucophyllum poisoning. Background: Breast tumors are common and require surgical treatment. A mastectomy causes edema, inflammation, and moderate to severe pain; therefore, analgesics should be used efficiently during the trans- and postoperative periods. Tumescence anesthesia has been studied in veterinary medicine; however, there is limited literature on the comparison of the constituents of the different solutions and the most suitable protocol. The objective of this study was to evaluate the residual postoperative analgesia of two solutions through the Melbourne, Modified Glasgow for dogs (EGM), and Visual Analogue (EVA) scales in bitches who underwent a unilateral mastectomy.Materials, Methods & Results: Twelve bitches, weighing between 5 and 15 kilograms and aged between 5 and 13 years old, were included in the study. To determine if the animals were medically fit to undergo the procedure, they were evaluated by clinical examination, laboratory testing (complete blood count, serum biochemistry [urea, creatinine and alanine aminotransferase/ALT], and imaging (thorax x-ray and abdominal ultrasonography). Patients were randomly divided into two groups. One group received a lidocaine-containing tumescent solution (GTL) that consisted of 210 mL of lactated Ringer's solution (at a temperature between 8 and 12°C), 40 mL of 2% lidocaine hydrochloride without vasoconstrictor, and 0.5 mL of adrenaline (1 mg/mL). The other group received ropivacaine (GTR) with 233.3 mL of lactated Ringer's solution (at the same temperature as the previous group’s), 16.7 mL of ropivacaine (7.5 mg/mL), and 0.5 mL of adrenaline (1 mg/mL). Both groups received a combination of acepromazine (0.04 mg/kg) and meperidine (2 mg/kg) as preanesthetic medication (MPA), followed by induction using propofol (to effect) and maintenance using isoflurane. The solutions were infused subcutaneously (SC) 5 min after stabilization of the anesthetic plane. For the mastectomy, the solutions were distributed throughout the mammary chain to be withdrawn, starting at the thoracic and abdominal regions and ending in the inguinal region. In the postoperative period, the animals were evaluated using three different scales (Melbourne, Glasgow modified for dogs [EGM], and Visual Analogue [EVA] scales), at six time points: one, two, four, eight, 12 and 24 h after extubation, or until the time of analgesic rescue when the animal presented with a score higher than 3.33 on the EGM scale. There were no statistical differences between the groups (P > 0.05) in any of the scales evaluated; however, most of the animals demonstrated analgesic rescue in the first hour of evaluation. GTR showed an additional rescue compared to GTL.Discussion: Analgesic rescue occurred in the first hour of the postoperative period. This differs from other studies that used morphine in MPA and observed higher analgesia. This occurred because meperidine, the drug used in the study, has a shorter duration and is a less potent analgesic than morphine. We opted for this opioid because of its minimal interaction with the drug used in MPA and to better identify the residual effect of the administered solution. In addition, it does not interact with the other drugs used in the anesthetic protocol. It is known that the tumescence technique prolongs the analgesic effect of MPA because of subcutaneous absorption of a portion of the injected solution adjacent to the area being operated on. However, this was not observed as 50% of the animals in each group were rescued during the first hour of the evaluation. From this study, it was concluded that the tumescent solutions used in the trans-operative period should not be expected to have analgesic effects during the postoperative period of mastectomies because of the short duration of action.

Descrevem-se aspectos epidemiológicos, clínicos e patológicos da intoxicação natural por Stryphnodendron fissuratum em bovinos na região Centro-Oeste do Brasil. Esta planta possui favas retorcidas, conhecidas popularmente por "rosquinha", que amadurecem entre julho e setembro, caem ao solo e são consumidas por bovinos, sendo relacionadas com mortalidades. Foram investigados surtos de intoxicação espontânea que ocorreram nos municípios de Aruanã, GO, Guiratinga e Rondonópolis, MT e Rio Verde de Mato Grosso, MS. Em geral, a intoxicação ocorreu em propriedades de pecuária extensiva, com rebanhos da raça Nelore e em pastagens de Brachiaria spp. Nos casos naturais, a evolução clínica variou em média de 24 horas até 10 dias e a morbidade e a letalidade variaram de 0,9 a 25% e de 15 a 100%, respectivamente. Os principais sinais clínicos na intoxicação natural foram depressão, anorexia, agressividade, icterícia, sialorréia, incoordenação motora, dismetria, retração abdominal, inquietação, fezes pastosas enegrecidas ou ressequidas com muco e estrias de sangue, diarréia, edema de barbela e fotossensibilização. À necropsia havia icterícia, edema do tecido subcutâneo, principalmente na região cervical, petéquias e equimoses de serosas abdominais e torácicas, ascite e hidrotórax leves, edema do mesentério, edema perirrenal, aumento do volume de fígado e rim, avermelhamento ruminal e úlceras multifocais no abomaso. O exame histológico revelou lesões degenerativas e necrose no fígado e rim e no abomaso áreas de necrose na mucosa. O diagnóstico de intoxicação por S. fissuratum foi estabelecido com base nos achados epidemiológicos, clínicos, patológicos e, em parte, na reprodução experimental pela administração das favas desta planta para bovinos. Em dois bovinos que receberam, respectivamente, duas doses diárias de 4 e 20 g de favas por kg de peso vivo foram observados sinais digestivos e morte dos animais, mas não ocorreu fotossensibilização. Epidemiological, clinical and pathological aspects of natural and experimental Stryphnodendron fissuratum poisoning in cattle in Central-Western Brazil were evaluated. The coiled pods of this tree are popularly known as "rosquinha" (small coil); they mature during July-September, when they fall to the ground, and are consumed by cattle causing mortalities. Spontaneous outbreaks of poisoning were investigated in the municipalities of Aruanã, State of Goias, Guiratinga and Rondonópolis State of Mato Grosso, and Rio Verde de Mato Grosso, State of Mato Grosso do Sul. Commonly the poisoning occurred in properties with Nelore cattle herds, which were raised extensively on Brachiaria spp. pastures. The clinical course in natural cases ranged from 24 hours to 10 days, and the morbidity and case fatality rates were 0.9-25% and 15-100%, respectively. The main clinical signs in the spontaneous poisoning were apathy, anorexia, agressiveness, jaundice, sialorrhoea, incoordination, dysmetria, retraction of the abdomen, uneasiness and pasty black feces with stings of mucus or blood, diarrhea, edema of the dewlap and photosensitization. At necropsy, jaundice, edema of the subcutaneous tissue, mainly of the cervical region, hemorrhages of serous membranes, ascitis and hidrotorax, edema of the mesentery, perirenal edema, increased size of liver and kidney, reddening of the ruminal mucosa, and abomasum ulcers were observed. The diagnosis of S. fissuratum poisoning was based on epidemiological, clinical and pathological findings, and in the experimental reproduction by the administration of the pods of this plant to cattle. Experimentally, daily doses of 4 and 20g of pods by kg body weight, respectively, were administered to two bovines. Both animals had digestive signs and died, but photosensitization was not observed.

Avaliou-se o efeito da suplementação de mananoligossacarídeo, ß-glucano e antibiótico em dietas de leitões machos castrados, durante a fase de creche (21 aos 54 dias de idade), sobre o desempenho, características morfo-histológicas da mucosa intestinal e ocorrência de diarreia. Foram utilizados 368 leitões de mesma linhagem, distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, com quatro tratamentos (1: 330g de mananoligossacarídeo t/ração (oriundos do núcleo), 2: 1.830g de mananoligossacarídeo t/ração (330g oriundos do núcleo + 1.550g da suplementação), 3: 330g de mananoligossacarídeo (oriundos do núcleo) + 500g de ß-glucano t/ração e 4: 330g de mananoligossacarídeo (oriundos do núcleo) + 250g de Colistina t/ração) e quatro repetições com 23 animais por unidade experimental. O desempenho foi avaliado pelo ganho de peso, consumo de ração e conversão alimentar. As características morfo-histológicas da mucosa intestinal estudadas foram altura de vilosidade, profundidade das criptas intestinais, perímetro de vilosidade e a relação altura de vilosidade:profundidade de cripta do duodeno, jejuno e íleo. A ocorrência de diarreia foi observada diariamente pela avaliação de escore fecal. A suplementação de mananoligossacarídeo, β-glucano e antibiótico na dieta de leitões machos castrados, na fase de creche, não influenciaram o desempenho e a ocorrência de diarreia. Maior altura de vilosidade e maior profundidade de criptas no duodeno e íleo foram verificadas nos animais suplementados com ß-glucano. No jejuno foi observado maior perímetro de vilosidade nos animais suplementados com ß-glucano e nos animais que não receberam suplemento adicional na dieta. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of supplementation with mannan oligosaccharides, ß-glucan and antibiotic in diets for castrated male piglets during the nursery phase (21 to 54 days of age) on performance, morpho-histological characteristics of the intestinal mucosa and occurrence of diarrhea. A total of 368 piglets of the same strain, distributed in a completely randomized design with four treatments (1- 330 g mannan oligosaccharides/t of diet (derived of nucleus); 2 - 1,830 g mannan oligosaccharides/t of diet (330g derived of nucleus + 1550g of supplementation); 3 - 330g mannan oligosaccharides (derived of nucleus) + 500g ß-glucan/t of diet; and 4 - 330g mannan oligosaccharides (derived of nucleus) + 250g colistin/t of diet) and four replications with 23 animals per experimental unit. Performance was assessed through weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion. The morpho-histological characteristics of the intestinal mucosa studied were villus height, intestinal crypt depth, villus circumference and villus height:crypt depth of duodenum, jejunum and ileum ratio. The occurrence of diarrhea was observed daily by the evaluation of fecal score. Supplementation of mannan oligosaccharides, ß-glucan and antibiotic in the diet of castrated male piglets in the nursery phase did not affect performance and occurrence of diarrhea. Greater villus height and crypt depth in the duodenum and ileum were verified in the animals supplemented with ß-glucan. In the jejunum, greater villus circumference was observed in the animals supplemented with ß-glucan and in the animals that did not receive additional supplemented diet.

The objectives of this study were to (1) investigate the occurrence of hepatitis E virus (HEV) in pigs from large-scale and family-scale farms, (2) genetically characterize the strains isolated, and (3) study the pathogenesis of swine HEV infection via immunohistochemistry. A total of 50 pigs from 10 farms in Mato Grosso State, Brazil were divided according to type of production system into either large-scale farms (n = 5) or family-scale farms (n = 5). Samples of liver, gallbladder, small and large intestines, bile, and feces from the pigs were analyzed by nested PCR with primers targeting the ORF2 region of HEV and by immunohistochemistry. Of the eight HEV-positive samples from pigs of family-scale farms, phylogenetic analysis revealed that seven of the swine HEV isolates clustered with subtype 3b of genotype 3 and one isolate was categorized with subtype 3 f. The HEV antigen was detected mainly in the small intestine samples from family-scale farms, suggesting an early stage HEV infection. HEV was not detected in the samples of pigs from large-scale farms, reinforcing the need for additional studies to evaluate the risk of transmission of HEV to humans from pigs from family-scale farms in Mato Grosso State.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disease in both humans and animals, and it results in movement restriction and pain at the affected area. This disorder affects more than 25% of people over 60 years of age, and it is considered universal for 70-year-old people. OA is estimated to affect over 20% of the canine population from the United States of America. The present study aimed to evaluate the treatment of rats that were surgically induced to OA using two different drug therapies, one with pentosan polysulfate, one with betamethasone, and one with chondroitin sulfate/ glucosamine. In order to produce joint disease, the cranial cruciate ligament was surgically transected. Animals were kept and treated for eight days after surgery and were assessed via both radiographies and tomographies taken before surgery and eight weeks later. All animals were euthanized having both macroscopic and microscopic analysis performed to evaluate the disorder progression and therapeutic action. Macroscopic analysis showed lesion in the knees subjected to OA induction. The untreated animals presented major lesions whereas the treated ones presented mild to moderate lesions. In conclusion, pentosan polysulfate is recommendable for the treatment of iatrogenic joint lesions in rats since the other treatments showed no significant difference.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the progression of lesions in different stages of osteoarthritis (OA) experimental by radiography (RX), computed tomography (CT), macroscopic and histopathology, linking these different diagnostic methods, helped to provide information that helps the best time for the therapeutic approach. Four experimental periods were delineated at 3, 6, 9 and 12 weeks after induction of OA, known as PI, PII, PIII and PIV, respectively, each with six animals. We evaluated the five compartments of the femorotibial joint: medial femoral condyle (MFC), lateral femoral condyle (LFC), medial tibial plateau (MTP), lateral tibial plateau (LTP) and femoral trochlea (FT). Therefore we established an index by compartment (IC) and by adding such an index was estimated joint femorotibial (IFT). It was observed that the CFM was the compartment with the highest IC also differed significantly (p0.05) between the PI and PII, however contrary fact occurred between the PII and PIII (p 0.05) between the PI and PII. In the variation of the average interval between periods, there was a higher value between the PIII PIV and for the other intervals of time periods (PI, PII, and PIII-PII). However, these intervals showed no statistically significant difference (p>0.05). Through the RX, CT, macroscopic and histopathological findings, we found similar patterns among individuals within the same period demonstrating a gradual progression of the disease. These results show that between 3 and 6 weeks progression of the lesion is slower and probably also can be reversed in comparison to other ranges where proved further progression between 9 and 12 weeks after induction of trauma OA. These results may provide a better therapeutic approach aimed at reversing the lesions in early stages of OA. We conclude that the interconnection of the four diagnostic methods individually classified into scores, which were unified in both indices in the evaluation by the femorotibial joint compartment and may represent a diagnostic condition closer to the true condition of the injury and its progression.

An outbreak of compressive myelopathy in cattle associated with the improper use of an oil vaccine is described. Neurological signs were observed in 25 out of 3,000 cattle after 60 days of being vaccinated against foot and mouth disease. The clinical picture was characterized by progressive paralysis of the hind limbs, difficulty in standing up, and sternal recumbency during the course of 2-5 months. A filling defect between the L1 and L3 vertebrae was seen through myelography performed in one of the affected animals. A yellow-gray, granular and irregular mass was observed in four necropsied animals involving the spinal nerve roots and epidural space of the lumbar (L1-L4) spinal cord; the mass was associated with a whitish oily fluid. This fluid was also found in association with necrosis of the longissimus dorsi muscle. Microscopic changes in the epidural space, nerve roots, and spinal musculature were similar and consisted of granulomas or pyogranulomas around circular unstained spaces (vacuoles). These spaces were located between areas of severe diffuse hyaline necrosis of muscle fibers and resembled the drops of oil present in the vaccine. Relatamos um surto de mielopatia compressiva lombar em bovinos associada à aplicação de vacina oleosa de forma inadequada. De um total de 3000 bovinos, 25 apresentaram distúrbios neurológicos aproximadamente 60 dias após terem sido vacinados contra a febre aftosa. O quadro clínico foi caracterizado por paralisia progressiva de membros posteriores, dificuldade para permanecer em estação e decúbito esternal com evolução de 2-5 meses. A mielografia realizada em um animal revelou defeito de enchimento na altura das vértebras L1 e L3. Quatro animais foram necropsiados e foi visualizado massa tecidual, granular e irregular, envolvendo as raízes nervosas medulares e espaço epidural da região lombar (L1-L4); esse material era associado com líquido brancacento e oleoso. Havia também áreas de necrose no músculo Longissimus dorsi com material similar ao do espaço epidural. Microscopicamente, as alterações observadas no espaço epidural, raízes nervosas medulares e na musculatura foram similares sendo caracterizadas pela formação de múltiplos granulomas ou piogranulomas envolvendo espaços (vacúolos) circulares não corados (aparentemente, o local antes ocupado por gotículas de óleo presente na vacina), além de necrose hialina severa difusa de fibras musculares.

A calcinose enzoótica é uma enfermidade caracterizada por mineralização de artérias e tecidos moles, osteopetrose, hipercalcemia e hiperfosfatemia. Neste trabalho descreve-se uma calcinose enzoótica em ruminantes no Mato Grosso, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Tocantins e no Distrito Federal, em campos onde não foi encontrada nenhuma das plantas calcinogênicas conhecidas. Os primeiros casos foram diagnosticados em 2004, e até 2010 foram necropsiados 86 casos da doença provenientes de 42 propriedades. Trinta e três propriedades foram visitadas, e em 32 os pastos eram caracterizados por moderada a acentuada degradação e invasão por plantas daninhas. A doença foi diagnosticada em ovinos em 19 fazendas, em bovinos em 17, em caprinos em 5 e em uma fazenda foram afetados tanto caprinos quanto ovinos. Animais adultos foram mais acometidos, mas a doença foi observada, também, em animais lactentes. A enfermidade foi observada durante todo o ano, mas a maioria dos surtos ocorreu nos meses de maior índice pluviométrico. Em duas fazendas foram determinados, mensalmente, os níveis séricos de Ca e P observando-se uma elevação significativa dos mesmos durante o período de chuvas. Os principais sinais clínicos observados foram de emagrecimento progressivo, caquexia e flexão de membros anteriores, com andar rígido. As principais lesões macroscópicas e histológicas foram de mineralização das artérias, valvas cardíacas, pulmões e rins. Sugere-se que a doença é provocada por uma planta calcinogênica ainda desconhecida. Mesmo sem conhecer a causa da calcinose recomenda-se evitar o pastejo de ruminantes em áreas degradadas e reformar pastagens degradadas. Enzootic calcinosis is a disease characterized by mineralization of soft tissues, osteopetrosis, hypercalcemia and hyperphosphatemia. From 2004 to 2010, 86 cases of enzootic calcinosis were diagnosed in 42 farms in the states of Mato Grosso, Goias, Minas Gerais and Tocantins, and in the Federal District. The pastures were inspected in 33 farms, observing that in 32 outbreaks the disease occurred in degraded pastures invaded with different weeds. Previously known calcinogenic plants were not present. The disease was diagnosed in sheep in 19 farms, in cattle in 17 farms, in goats in five farms, and in sheep and goats in one farm. Adult animals were more affected; but the disease also was observed in lactating animals. The disease occurred all over the year, but most outbreaks were diagnosed during the rainy season. Serum Ca and P concentrations determined monthly in two sheep flocks were significantly higher during the rainy season. Main clinical signs were progressive emaciation followed by cachexia, and stiff gait with flexion of the fore limbs. Gross findings were mineralization of the arteries, cardiac valves, lungs, and kidneys. Histological findings were arterial mineralization, mainly in the medial layer with cartilaginous metaplasia and colagenous deposition between smooth muscle fibers. It is suggested that the disease is caused by an unknown calcinogenic weed present in degraded pastures.

A macracantorrincose e considerada uma zoonose e, em virtude especialmente das caracteristicas do sistema de criacao, e praticamente inexistente na suinocultura moderna. Este trabalho tem como objetivo comunicar a ocorrencia e as alteracoes anatomopatologicas de um surto de macracantorrincose causada por Macracanthorhynchus hirudinaceus em uma criacao comercial de queixadas, Tayassu pecari . A criacao, localizada nos arredores da cidade de Goiânia, Goias, devidamente registrada no Instituto Brasileiro do Meio Ambiente e Recursos Naturais Renovaveis, era composta por 150 animais de diferentes faixas etarias, os quais ocupavam uma area de 4,6 hectares, cercada por tela e com um curral de manejo em um dos piquetes. Alem do pastejo os animais eram alimentados com milho e mandioca. No plantel houve mortalidade de 15 animais com idade inferior a 1 ano. Cinco destes animais foram necropsiados e, em seguida, foi realizada a colheita de amostras para exame microscopico e parasitologico. Na necropsia foram observadas: intensa deposicao de fibrina sobre as visceras abdominais, presenca de liquido avermelhado na cavidade abdominal e extensa area de hemorragia e necrose no epiplon. A parede externa do intestino delgado apresentava inumeros nodulos avermelhados, que a luz intestinal evidenciavam a presenca de parasitos com corpo achatado e a proboscide aderida a mucosa intestinal. No exame histopatologico dos nodulos intestinais, verificou-se um infiltrado inflamatorio granulomatoso acentuado, com fibroplasia moderada associada a presenca de ovos, de larvas e da porcao anterior do parasito. O exame parasitologico identificou o parasito como Macracanthorhynchus hirudinaceus , confirmando-se o surto de macracantorrincose.

Achados epidemiológicos, clínicos, patológicos e microbiológicos de 13 casos de meningoencefalite necrosante pelo Herpesvírus Bovino (BHV), afetando 12 rebanhos bovinos ocorridos no período de março de 1999 a agosto de 2000 em 11 municípios do Estado de Mato Grosso são descritos. Onze surtos ocorreram em sistemas de criação extensiva, afetando com maior freqüência animais da raça nelore, e idade média de 24 meses com uma variação de dois a 72 meses. Os principais sinais clínicos descritos foram as alterações neurológicas, sendo relatados salivação profusa, descarga nasal e ocular serosa, depressão profunda, incoordenação, andar a esmo ou em círculo, cegueira, diminuição do tonus lingual, decúbito lateral com movimentos de pedalagem, opistótono e morte. Ausência de alterações foi o relato mais comum durante a necropsia. Em alguns casos, observou-se congestão encefálica difusa, hemorragias submeningeanas multifocais, achatamento de circunvoluções cerebrais e áreas focais de malacias. Os principais achados microscópicos foram meningoencefalite com corpúsculos de inclusão eosinofílicos, intranucleares em astrócitos. As áreas de malacia afetavam principalmente o córtex cerebral. Foi realizado isolamento e caracterização viral em três de um total de sete amostras encaminhadas Em um dos casos, dos que houve isolamento viral, o diagnóstico histopatológico foi de polioencefalomalacia não se observando meningoencefalite e corpúsculos de inclusão. The epidemiological, clinical, pathological and microbiological aspects of 13 cases of necrotizing meningo-encephalitis associated to bovine herpesvirus are described. The disease is described in 12 cattle herds from March 1999 to August 2000 at 11 counties of the State of Mato Grosso, Brazil. The outbreaks were described in cattle raised on farms in which, mostly Zebu breeds were involved. The average age of the cattle affected was 24 months, ranging from two to 72 months old. Neurological manifestations were the main clinical signs noticed. The animals were separated from the herd. The animals showed profuse salivation, serous nasal and ocular discharge, profound depression, incoordination, walking or running in circles, blindness, diminution of tongue tonus, trembling and opistotonus. Most of the cases had no macroscopic alterations. Some cases had diffuse encephalic congestion, multifocal submeningeal hemorragics, flattened cerebral circumvolutions and focal discoloration of the cortex. The main microscopic lesions in the 12 cases were necrotizing meningo-encephalitis with eosinophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies in astrocytes, and cortical malacia. Virus was isolated from three cases submitted from a total of seven examined. One of the cases with virus isolation at the histophatology examination yielded a diagnosis of polioencephalomalacia.
