Jatropha nana is an endemic, threatened under-shrub possessing significant economic potential. In spite of this economic importance, there has been no allometric equation described till date to estimate its leaf area. We address this lacuna by describing a method of estimating the leaf area directly, without using expensive leaf meters. For the two leaf morphotypes of J. nana (monolobed and trilobed), developing and mature leaves were collected from field and an allometric relationship was developed, using length (L), width (W) and LW as independent variables. For the described equations, the coefficient of determination (Ra2) between true leaf area and leaf dimensions ranged from 0.8356 to 0.9963. After applying certain statistical criteria we report that the equations Ŷ = 0.6942*(LW) and Ŷ = 0.6426*(LW) are the best for estimating the monolobed and trilobed leaf area respectively. These equations could be further simplified by considering only one leaf dimension (W). Thus the equation Ŷ = 1.2890*(W)1.8794 for monolobed leaves and Ŷ = 1.1089*(W)1.8030 for trilobed leaves estimate leaf area of J. nana with high precision, accuracy, random dispersion pattern of residuals and without any bias. These equations will be vital for addressing several further questions on this under-researched species.

Quando se fala de ilustração científica, a reação que temos é de, no mínimo, perplexidade. Al- guns imaginam que se trata de uma área extinta ou em vias de extinção. Outros nem sabem do que se trata, principalmente fora do meio acadêmico. Mas, repassemos um pouco de história, para ver que nós, ilustradores científicos, somos herdeiros de uma tradição secular.

Purpose – The present paper assesses the decision problem of selecting Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Systems (SARP) by the hybrid MPSI-SPOTIS approach for deployment in border control and transborder illicit combat. Design/methodology/approach – By the hybrid MCDA MPSI-SPOTIS approach, and from the database available in Gettinger (2019), models were filtered by Endurance, Range, Maximum Take-Off Weight (MTOW), and Payload, fitting within the classification of Categories EB 0 and 2. Category EB 1 was not considered in this study due to the limited number of models in the data source. Findings – The use of the Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) tool MPSI-SPOTIS allowed the determination of weights by stochastic criteria, applied in a ranking method resistant to reverse ordering. The application of the method identified the Raybird-3 (Cat EB 0) and Searcher (Mk3) (Cat EB 2) models as the best alternatives. From a proposed clustering, other selection possibilities with close performance in the evaluation were presented. The cost criterion was not taken into consideration due to the absence of information in the data source employed. Future studies are suggested to include criteria related to the life cycle and acquisition cost of the models. Este trabalho traça um delineamento teórico do estatuto jurídico do corpo na modernidade jurídica ocidental e de suas transformações, associadas à aceleração tecnocientífica. A metodologia utilizada é a revisão bibliográfica da construção jurídica do corpo, com base na literatura jurídica e de áreas afins. O corpo, como objeto de regulação jurídica, não é tomado como um dado material, natural e orgânico, mas sim como construção social, cultural e política. As diversas representações do corpo no direito revelam sua ambiguidade, visto que sua qualificação jurídica oscila entre as categorias de pessoa e coisa. As respostas jurídicas à aceleração tecnocientífica aprofundam essa ambivalência do corpo, ao apreendê-lo como objeto da autodeterminação pessoal, sob o regime dos direitos da personalidade. Ao mesmo tempo, sob influxo de processos culturais e políticos, os corpos assumem, mais recentemente, também, o papel de materializar os sujeitos e mobilizar demandas políticas por direitos. O estudo apresentado neste artigo, portanto, aponta para outras vias de leitura, que colocam em disputa o discurso jurídico sobre o corpo, não mais concebido somente como objeto de relações jurídicas, pois passa a ser, também, locus político de afirmação de identidades e subjetividades múltiplas.

Decision-support methods are crucial for analyzing complex alternatives and criteria in today’s data-driven world. This Systematic Literature Review (SLR) explores and synthesizes knowledge about decision support methodologies that integrate Multicriteria Decision Making (MCDM) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA), an unsupervised Machine Learning (ML) technique. Both techniques optimize complex decisions by combining multiple criteria and dimensional data analysis. Focusing on performance evaluations, criterion weighting, and validation testing, this review identifies significant gaps in existing methodologies. These include the lack of consideration for non-beneficial criteria in PCA, insufficient validation tests in over half of the studies, and the non-use of communalities (the contribution of each criterion to the main factors) in decision support approaches. Additionally, this SLR offers a comprehensive quantitative overview, analyzing data from the Scopus, IEEE, and Web of Science databases and identifying 16 relevant studies. Furthermore, the scarcity of systematic reviews integrating MCDM and PCA techniques impedes evidence-based decision-making practices and theoretical evolution. This is particularly crucial as ML and data analysis advance rapidly, requiring models that reflect technological innovations. This article addresses this gap in the literature by providing an analysis of decision support methods and guiding further improvement in this field.

Pilosocereus gounellei A. Weber ex K. Schum. Bly. Ex Rowl (xique-xique) is a cactus native to the Brazilian Caatinga biome and considered a non-conventional food plant. This study evaluated the physicochemical characteristics, antioxidant capacity, and impacts on the composition and metabolic activity of human intestinal microbiota of freeze-dried P. gounellei cladodes (FDPg) during 48 h of in vitro colonic fermentation. FDPg had a high nutritional value, the presence of bioactive compounds, and antioxidant capacity. The colonic fermentation of FDPg decreased the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio and increased bacterial diversity. It also increased the relative abundance of bacterial groups considered beneficial, such as Mitsuokella, Bacteroides, Megasphaera, and Acidaminococcus, and decreased the relative abundance of bacterial groups considered non-beneficial, such as Succinivibrio, Citrobacter, Escherichia-Shigella, Faecalibacterium, and Blautia. The colonic fermentation of FDPg induced the production of various metabolites related to host health promotion. The results show the potential beneficial impacts of FDPg on human intestinal microbiota.

Introdução: É crucial que enfermeiras(os) façam a investigação de sífilis na gestação, tendo sido proporcionada sua abordagem desde o início da formação. Objetivo: Descrever uma aula de simulação realística sobre investigação de sífilis na gestação para estudantes de graduação de Enfermagem. Método: Relato de experiência de uma simulação realística que teve por objetivo identificar quais são as condutas de investigação e rastreio no pré-natal de uma pessoa gestante com suspeita de sífilis na gestação. Seguiu-se as etapas: identificação do conteúdo, elaboração de um pré-briefing, briefing, execução do cenário, e avaliação da simulação realística por um grupo de especialistas (juízes) em sífilis e saúde coletiva. Cinco juízes avaliaram a aplicabilidade e relevância do conteúdo e da metodologia proposta, com base num questionário likert. Após a adequação conforme avaliação, a aula de simulação foi realizada com 50 alunos do 7° semestre do curso. Resultados: No pré-briefing os estudantes recordaram a aula teórica de sífilis, identificando as ações do enfermeiro para investigação de sífilis congênita no contexto de pré-natal. No briefing, a partir de um caso problema de gestante mulher cis adulta, estudantes voluntários desempenharam papéis de enfermeiro e usuária; no debriefing os estudantes foram conduzidos a responderam perguntas que direcionam às etapas da investigação de sífilis. Total de horas: briefing 30 min + cenário 20 min + debriefing 40 min). Conclusão: A simulação realística mostrou ser uma metodologia interessante ao proporcionar o resgate de conhecimentos sobre sífilis na gestação, a identificação dos pontos principais de uma investigação de caso de sífilis na gestação e demonstrar as habilidades procedimentais e comportamentais necessárias à enfermeira(o) para a realização de um atendimento clínico e investigativo.

Jambolan (Syzygium cumini L.) is an underutilized fruit rich in bioactive phenolic compounds, specially anthocyanins, but the low stability of these substances and interaction with other compounds in the food matrix limit their application as food additives; nanoencapsulation is the best strategy to overcome these limitations. This study aimed to nanoencapsulate a phenolic-rich jambolan extract using whey proteins and pectin by nanoprecipitation in different antisolvent compositions. Two formulations were synthesized (7.33 % extract, 1.67 % pectin, and 5 % concentrated or isolated whey protein) precipitated in different acetone concentrations (50, 70, and 100 % v/v). SEM showed particles with spherical shape and smooth surface. DLS pointed diameters between 82 nm and 116 nm. FTIR indicated chemical interactions between the materials. Encapsulation efficiency showed high phenolic compounds entrapment in all systems [73.81–84.65 %, p > 0.05]. The objective of this study was to identify the genetic, phenotypic and environmental parameters related to chemical compounds associated with beverage quality in a conilon coffee collection, grown in an irrigated system, in the Cerrado. The experiment was carried out at Embrapa Cerrados using green grains harvested in two years from 84 genotypes of the cultivar Robusta Tropical. Caffeine content, protein, ether extract, total soluble solids, pH and titratable acidity were evaluated. The data were subjected to analysis of variance. Significant differences were observed at 1% probability among accessions for all evaluated chemical characteristics in both harvest years. The high heritability, genetic coefficients of variation and selective accuracy reveal the potential for achieving genetic gains via the selection of genotypes adapted to the irrigated system in the Cerrado combined with high beverage quality.

The present study was to evaluate the effect of trace minerals (Zn, Mn, and Cu) from complexed amino acid minerals (ZMCAA) and bis-glycinate chelated minerals (ZMCGly) in laying hen diets on performance, internal and external egg quality, yolk mineral deposition, intestinal morphometry, and bone characteristics. From 78 to 98 weeks of age, 400 White LSL-Lite strain laying hens were distributed in a randomized design with 4 treatments with 10 replicates per treatment. Treatments were distributed in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement using either Zn, Mn, and Cu of ZMCAA or ZMCGly source at 2 levels: low (20, 20, and 3.5 mg/kg of Zn, Mn, and Cu, respectively) or high (40, 40, and 7 mg/kg of Zn, Mn, and Cu, respectively). The analysis of variance was performed, and in cases where differences were observed, the means were compared using Tukey's test (P < 0.05). The source and level of trace mineral supplementation had a significant impact on the performance of laying hens. Hens fed ZMCAA had higher egg production (P = 0.01), egg weight (P = 0.02), egg mass (P = 0.01), and lower feed conversion ratio (P = 0.05) compared to those fed ZMCGly. The ZMCAA supplementation showed higher albumen height (P = 0.01), albumen weight (P = 0.01), and eggshell thickness (P < 0.01). The deposition of Zn (P < 0.01), Mn (P < 0.01), and Cu (P < 0.01) in the egg yolk was greater for hens received ZMCAA. Tibia weight (P = 0.04) and bone densitometry (P < 0.01) in the tibia were higher with ZMCAA supplementation. In the small intestine, ZMCAA resulted in longer villi (P = 0.02) and shorter crypt depth (P = 0.01) in the duodenum. Jejunum and ileum measurements were influenced by the level and source of trace minerals (P < 0.05). Laying hens fed ZMCAA exhibited superior performance, egg quality, deposition of trace minerals in the egg yolk, and bone density compared to hens fed ZMCGly. In this study, older laying hens supplemented with ZMCAA at lower levels demonstrated adequate levels of supplementation.

This study evaluated the physicochemical properties, antioxidant capacity, and potential prebiotic effects on the human intestinal microbiota of freeze-dried Opuntia dillenii (Ker Gawl). Haw] (Cactaceae) cladodes (FDOd). FDOd had high levels of total fiber (52.36 g/100 g), especially soluble fiber (33.36 g/100 g), as well as minerals, such as potassium (4415.49 mg/100 g), calcium (1593.25 mg/100 g), magnesium (853.55 mg/100 g), and phosphorus (209.04 mg/100 g), high total chlorophyll content (912.00 mg/100 g), presence of various phenolic compounds, such as catechin (41.00 mg/100 g), myricetin (785.00 mg/100 g), isorhamnetin (5.00 mg/100 g), rutin (42 mg/100 g), and antioxidant activity (ABTS•+: 0.51 µmol TEAC/g; DPPH•: 0.32 µmol TEAC/g; FRAP: 2.75 µmol FeSO4/g). Fermentation of FDOd using human fecal inoculum changed the composition and metabolic activity of intestinal microbiota, increasing the relative abundance of Ligilactobacillus (0.03 %–16.44 %), Lactiplantibacillus (0.00 %–1.11 %), and Agathobacter (1.80 %–4.23 %), and decreasing the relative abundance of Prevotella_9 (25.08 %–0.15 %) and Succinivibrio (24.77 %–1.54 %). FDOd influenced the metabolic profile of the intestinal microbiota with the production of various metabolites, including short- and medium-chain fatty acids, organic acids, essential amino acids, and other compound classes with health-promoting properties. The results indicate FDOd as a new ingredient with prebiotic properties in the human intestinal microbiota.

Este artigo analisa a configuração do ICMS Educacional no bojo do Fundeb Permanente nos estados da Bahia e de Santa Catarina, apresentando uma síntese da distribuição da quota municipal desse imposto, nessas unidades federativas, no primeiro ano de sua vigência, observando os critérios educacionais nos dois estados brasileiros, bem como estabelecem-se as desigualdades na distribuição do ICMS Educacional. Assim, analisam-se as possíveis inter-relações com indicadores socioeconômicos, educacionais e de receita potencial por aluno. As conclusões apontam as contradições desse processo, como: a heteronomia da imposição administrativa do ICMS Educacional sobre os municípios; a fragilidade representativa do modelo de avaliação externa e o Ideb sobre a realidade educacional; a não garantia aos recursos para a área educacional desse modelo, já que não aumenta verbas e somente realoca discricionariamente uma parcela da transferência intergovernamental; a relação entre realidades vulneráveis com o insucesso escolar que pode aumentar as desigualdades; enfim, a contradição dentro da mesma política entre a busca pela redução das desigualdades na distribuição dos recursos e a disputa por recurso que gera em si desigualdade e exclusão entre os municípios.

Educação em saúde é uma estratégia de abordagem do profissional farmacêutico com o indivíduo em sociedade, para levar a este conhecimento e informações que gerem o cuidado com hábitos. Dito isso, este artigo tem por objetivo descrever as atividades de ações de educação em saúde e serviços farmacêuticos prestados em uma Organização Não Governamental (ONG), na região norte do Brasil, e sua relevância observada. As ações abordaram as temáticas das doenças crônicas não transmissíveis, e ofereceram como serviços, a aferição de pressão arterial e verificação de glicemia capilar, para promover práticas de autocuidado, orientações e qualidade de vida. Acrescenta-se também, abordagens acerca de cuidados e prevenção com saúde da mulher, e um serviço extra de práticas integrativas e complementares em saúde. As ações ocorreram no período de um ano, iniciado em 2022 e finalizado em 2023. Conclui-se que, a realização das ações agrega à comunidade, a oportunidade em obter esclarecimentos de questões em saúde, e acessibilidade aos serviços em saúde. E, aos discentes da graduação em farmácia, resulta em vivências que aprimoram o cuidado, a gestão, a orientação, a educação e a assistência farmacêutica.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo principal analisar os contos afro-brasileiros através de uma reflexão epistemológica. Tra-çar uma junção da literatura e história dos contos sendo ana-lisado por uma episteme da cultura afrobrasileira e fazer en-tender que os contos afro-brasileiros possuem um conhecimento carregado de saberes e fazeres cognitivos que não podem ser perdidos ou ignorados. A metodologia utilizada é a teórica, com vistas a uma melhor explicitação do referencial epistemológico; revisão da literatura que tematiza a cultura afro-brasileira a partir das referências dos textos tomados para análise a serem seguidas são qualitativas, análise de conteúdo.

Este trabalho tem como objeto de estudo um recorte de produtos educacionais de dissertações de mestrados profissionais que contêm atividades históricas relacionadas ao ensino de operações aritméticas para os Anos Iniciais ou atividades que possam ser adaptáveis para os Anos Finais do Ensino Fundamental. Nosso objetivo é fazer uma descrição comentada desses produtos e indicar como os professores poderão utilizá-las na sala de aula. Para alcançar nosso objetivo, realizamos uma pesquisa qualitativa do tipo bibliográfica, caracterizada por levantamento, classificação e agrupamento de produtos educacionais que usam história para o ensino da Matemática para identificar os conteúdos matemáticos relacionados a operações aritméticas voltados para os Anos Iniciais, visando a sua possível utilização nesse nível de ensino, uma vez que se constituem em um contributo importante das pesquisas realizadas nos mestrados profissionais do país. Os resultados apontam possibilidades de uso desses produtos educacionais como complementar ao programa estabelecido nos livros didáticos e nas práticas de sala de aula, podendo ser adaptados para a ação docente nos Anos Iniciais. Cabe ao professor fazer o tratamento e as adaptações adequadas para sua utilização na ação pedagógica.

Abstract This study aims to expand the discussion regarding the extent to which tourism can address socioeconomic expectations. Like other coastal regions, the state of Alagoas has prioritised tourism promotion, despite facing a rainy season that hinders its primary form of tourism, known as Sea, Sun and Sand tourism. We have based our assessment on climate and weather. Through various sources, we have identified narratives related to the rainy season. When crossing these narratives with the Alagoas Strategic Plan for Tourism Development 2013-2023, our findings revealed that the state’s policy inadequately addresses the impact of the rainy season. Consequently, we have proposed some recommendations to better align with current local-regional constraints and demands. Beyond the scope of this work, our narrative approach has proven valuable in expanding the consideration of values and meanings within the framework of public policy development, potentially fostering a more holistic understanding of the environment-society relationship.

Acanthamoeba castellanii is a free-living amoeba capable of causing keratitis in humans, with most cases related to contact lens wearers and surgical procedures. In addition, A. castellanii may cause pneumonia, granulomatous encephalitis, and skin lesions in immunocompromised individuals. Considering the lack of adequate treatment for acanthamoebiasis, the aim of this review is to assess relevant original articles that covered the current arsenal of drugs and models of organisms used in the field of experimental A. castellanii infection that have been published within the last 5 years (2018–2023) in journals indexed by the following databases: Electronic Library Online (SciELO), PubMed, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (Medline), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (Lilacs), Google Academic, and Capes Periodical Portal. Thirty articles were selected, and the main findings showed that the available therapeutics for acanthamoebiasis are still limited and nonspecific, and no innovations have occurred in the last few years. In terms of novel chemotherapeutic advances, the last findings have focused on the activity of natural products (plant-based extracts), nanoemulsions, coated particles, and photodynamic association against A. castellanii, without advancing from the bench to bedside perspective. The choice of a non-representative model system for acanthamoebiasis, as well as the limitations of studies in vivo, impairs the advancement of toxicity analyses. Efforts should be made to expand the model systems used, standardize tests for evaluating anti-A. castellanii drug candidates, and increase and support research groups focusing on the biology of A. castellanii and the pharmacology of acanthamoebiasis.

En esta investigación se evaluó la incidencia del arte en el desarrollo cognitivo de los niños de 4 a 5 años en la Escuela Fiscal Leopoldo Izquieta Pérez con el objetivo de diseñar una propuesta de talleres pedagógicos y artísticos dirigidos a los docentes. Se utilizó una metodología de enfoque mixto, mediante una investigación descriptiva y explicativa, bibliográfica y de campo. Se aplicó una encuesta, entrevistas y la observación a 50 estudiantes, sus representantes, docentes y directora. Los resultados evidenciaron que los docentes desconocen los beneficios del arte como estrategia pedagógica, los padres y representantes tampoco conocen el tema y los niños observados tienen deficiencias en el desarrollo cognitivo. No obstante, los padres, los docentes y la directora están a favor de la realización de talleres dirigidos a docentes para mejorar los niveles de desarrollo cognitivo de niños mediante el uso pedagógico del arte; de allí surgió una guía para docentes que propone actividades artísticas en el aula y se concluyó que el arte tiene un impacto muy positivo en el desarrollo cognitivo de los niños.

Market competitiveness drives the electric motors industry, which in turn necessitates the selection of optimal production scenarios, particularly in the context of packaging. This is crucial for maintaining competitiveness and meeting the rigorous quality and logistical demands that are characteristic of this industry. This paper presents a systematic analysis of the packaging production chain for electric motors, employing the SAPEVO-M method as a decision aid tool. The study examines various strategic options, including outsourcing and internalizing processes, with a particular focus on their impacts on logistics, quality control, and overall supply-chain efficiency. The research conducts a comprehensive evaluation of these strategies to ascertain the most effective approach for managing the complexities of packaging production. The SAPEVO-M method facilitated a structured decision-making process, allowing for the aggregation and prioritization of diverse criteria such as cost, quality, flexibility, environmental impact, and supply risk. A sensitivity analysis was performed to validate the robustness of the decision-making outcomes under varying alternatives. The findings highlight the benefits of internalizing certain processes, particularly the assembly (with a score of 43.27%), to gain direct control over production variables, leading to enhanced operational efficiency and product competitiveness. This paper contributes to the literature by demonstrating the application of MCDA in enhancing strategic decisions within the electric motors industry, providing insights for analyzing other manufacturing factors in the improvement of supply-chain processes.

The selection of a navy ship is essential to guarantee a country’s sovereignty, deterrence capabilities, and national security, especially in the face of possible conflicts and diplomatic instability. This paper proposes the integration of concepts related to multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) methodology and machine learning, creating the Simple Aggregation of Preferences Expressed by Ordinal Vectors—Principal Components (SAPEVO-PC) method. The proposed method proposes an evolution of the SAPEVO family, allowing the inclusion of qualitative preferences, and adds concepts from Principal Component Analysis (PCA), aiming to simplify the decision-making process, maintaining precision and reliability. We carried out a case study analyzing 32 warships and ten quantitative criteria, demonstrating the practical application and effectiveness of the method. The generated rankings reflected both subjective perceptions and the quantitative performance data of each ship. This innovative integration of qualitative data with a quantitative machine learning algorithm ensures comprehensive and robust analyses, facilitating informed and strategic decisions. The results showed a high degree of consistency and reliability, with the top and bottom rankings remaining stable across different decision-makers’ perspectives. This study highlights the potential of SAPEVO-PC to improve decision-making efficiency in complex, multi-criteria environments, contributing to the field of marine science.

Abstract Microcapsules of ciriguela peel extracts obtained by ultrasound-assisted extraction were prepared by spray drying, whose results were compared with those of freeze-drying as a control. The effects of spray-drying air temperature, feed flow rate and ratio of encapsulating agents (maltodextrin and arabic gum) were studied. Encapsulation efficiency, moisture content, total phenolic compounds (TPC), water activity, hygroscopicity, solubility, colorimetric parameters, phenolic profile by HPLC/DAD, simulated gastrointestinal digestion and morphology of spray-dried and freeze-dried microcapsules were evaluated, as well as their stability of TPC during 90 days storage at 7 and 25 °C. Spray-dried extract showed higher encapsulation efficiency (98.83%) and TPC (476.82 mg GAE g−1) than freeze-dried extract. The most abundant compounds in the liquid extract of ciriguela peel flour were rutin, epicatechin gallate, chlorogenic acid and quercetin. Rutin and myricetin were the major flavonoids in the spray-dried extract, while quercetin and kaempferol were in the freeze-dried one. The simulated gastrointestinal digestion test of microencapsulated extracts revealed the highest TPC contents after the gastric phase and the lowest one after the intestinal one. Rutin was the most abundant compound after the digestion of both spray-dried (68.74 µg g−1) and freeze-dried (93.98 µg g−1) extracts. Spray-dried microcapsules were of spherical shape, freeze-dried products of irregular structures. Spray-dried microcapsules had higher phenolic compounds contents after 90 days of storage at 7 °C compared to those stored at 25 °C, while the lyophilized ones showed no significant difference between the two storage temperatures. The ciriguela agro-industrial residue can be considered an interesting alternative source of phenolic compounds that could be used, in the form of bioactive compounds-rich powders, as an ingredient in pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries.

This study evaluated the anti-adiposity and anxiolytic effects of malícia honey (MH) on obese rats. A total of 40 male Wistar rats were initially randomized into four groups: healthy (HG); obese (OG); and healthy (HGH) and obese (OGH) both treated with malícia honey by gavage (1000 mg/kg). The rats consumed a control or cafeteria diet for 16 weeks. Body weight, food intake, adiposity index, anxious-like behaviour and concentration of organic acids in the brain, intestine and faeces were analysed. Histological analyses were performed on adipose tissue and brain. MH showed procyanidin B1 and B2, epicatechin, and naringenin as the main polyphenols. The OGH had lower caloric intake (18 %), body weight (12 %) and lower adipocyte area compared to the OG. MH increased organic acids in biological materials and prevented the appearance of ischemic neurons. MH had an anti-adiposity effect, protected the nerve tissue and reversed anxious-like behaviour in obesity-induced rats.

Accurate regional seasonal forecasts of the rainy season are essential for the implementation of effective socioeconomic activities and policy. However, current characteristics of the period of occurrence of the rainy season in the Eastern Northeast Brazil (ENEB) region demonstrated that maximum precipitation varies substantially depending on the period analyzed. From 1972 to 2002, the rainy season occurred during the June–July–August (JJA) quarter, while from 1981 to 2011, it occurred in the April–May–June (AMJ) quarter. To access how these differences may be due to different patterns of sea surface temperature (SST), using observed precipitation and SST data from NOAA for the period from 1982 to 2018, this study identified the spatial patterns of inter-annual changes in Pacific and Atlantic SST related to the occurrence of the ENEB rainy seasons. We focus on the statistical method of symmetric mean absolute percentage error (sMAPE) for forecasting these periods based on SST information. Our results revealed five different quarterly periods (FMA, MAM, AMJ, MJJ, JJA) to the rainy season, in which MJJ is more prevalent. The sMAPE values of the SST patterns are inversely proportional to precipitation in the ENEB. Hence, it may be concluded that our climate analysis demonstrates that seasonal SST patterns can be used for forecasting the period of the rainy season.

Sourdough production is a complex fermentation process. Natural sourdough fermentation without standardization causes great variability in microbial communities and derived products. Starter cultures have emerged as alternatives to natural fermentation processes, which could improve bakery quality and produce bioactive compounds. This study aimed to evaluate the impacts of freeze-drying on the production and viability of sourdoughs with Lactiplantibacillus pentosus 129 (Lp) and Limosilactobacillus fermentum 139 (Lf), as well as their effects on the quality of long-fermentation bread. These strains were selected based on their better performance considering acidification and exopolysaccharide production capacity. Sourdough with Lp and Lf were propagated until the 10th day, when physicochemical and microbiological parameters were determined. The produced sourdoughs were freeze-dried, and bread samples were produced. The freeze-drying process resulted in high survival rates and few impacts on the metabolic activity of Lp and Lf until 60 days of storage. Incorporating Lp and Lf improved the microbiological and physicochemical properties of sourdough and long-fermentation breads. Tested freeze-dried sourdoughs led to reduced bread aging (higher specific volume and decreased starch retrogradation) and increased digestibility. The results show the potential of the freeze-dried sourdoughs produced with Lp and Lf as innovative strategies for standardizing production protocols for the bakery industry, especially for producing long-term fermentation bread.

A anemia afeta quase um quarto da população mundial e causa inúmeros danos em vários tecidos, como baixa oxigenação e sinais e sintomas, como falta de ar, falta de apetite, dor de cabeça, tontura e dificuldade de aprendizado. Não há, no entanto, dados sobre anemia em crianças na Região Norte do Brasil, o que é necessário para estabelecer parâmetros confiáveis para restabelecer a saúde desses pacientes. Nosso objetivo foi avaliar os casos de anemia notificados em crianças na Região Norte do Brasil. Trata-se de um estudo transversal retrospectivo, realizado no período de um ano. As características demográficas foram anotadas e todas as crianças foram cuidadosamente designadas para o estudo. O procedimento de coleta de sangue foi realizado de acordo com o protocolo estabelecido. Um total de 600 pacientes foram incluídos no estudo. A maioria era do sexo feminino (52,5%), parda (51,6%), com renda familiar de um a dois salários-mínimos e ensino fundamental incompleto. A anemia foi mais evidente nas idades de 9 a 12 anos (74,8%) e a proporção de crianças com hematócrito, ferro e ferritina abaixo de 35%, 50 µg/dL e 7 µg/L, respectivamente, foi maior entre as crianças com anemia. Além disso, possuíam inúmeras variáveis de classificação morfológica comparadas ao índice hematimétrico. O estudo mostrou que a anemia afeta crianças. Diante da magnitude dos riscos apresentados neste artigo, medidas preventivas para esta patologia devem ser tomadas para garantir a integridade da saúde destes pacientes, sob pena de danos irreversíveis para as gerações futuras.

A Unidade de Saúde da Família (USF) Argemiro, localizada em Juazeiro (BA), no Semiárido Nordestino, abarca três equipes de saúde e diversos pacientes diariamente, em um prédio sem estrutura para acolhimento adequado. Muitas vezes os pacientes precisam esperar em ambientes sem sombra. Aliado a isso, parcela da população encontra-se em situação de vulnerabilidade social e insegurança alimentar. É sabido e registrado na literatura que, ao longo da história, a humanidade beneficia-se do convívio com áreas verdes. Além disso, a existência de áreas verdes pode ajudar a produzir conforto térmico em áreas de maior calor, produzir alimentos e gerar ambientes de convívio. Surge daí a ideia de produzir uma agrofloresta comunitária na USF Argemiro. Métodos: O presente artigo é o relato de experiência de um médico residente sobre o processo de produção da agrofloresta entre 30 de julho de 2022 e 21 de dezembro de 2022. Resultados: A agrofloresta foi plantada ao longo de oito encontros, em conjunto com as equipes de saúde e com os usuários de serviço. Foram identificados desafios relacionados à distância, tipo de solo, falta de suporte técnico e grande demanda assistencial da própria unidade de saúde. No momento, a agrofloresta encontra-se sem o manejo adequado, embora a organização da equipe e da comunidade possa restaurar o bom andamento do projeto. Conclusões: A produção de uma agrofloresta demanda vários atores e organização. Desafios surgiram e foram superados de maneira coletiva, porém é um projeto facilmente replicável em diversas USF do Brasil de baixo custo material, com diversos benefícios à população adscrita, às equipes de saúde e ao meio ambiente em geral.

Investigar oscilações pluviométricas, em escala local, torna-se necessário para ampliar o leque de informações e análise da relação entre produção agropecuária com os ciclos temporais de estiagens. Neste contexto, o objetivo deste artigo é analisar a relação entre os padrões pluviométricos do último ciclo de estiagem com a produção agrícola de sequeiro em municípios do semiárido de Pernambuco e possíveis contribuições para um eventual processo de desertificação. Para desenvolvimento do estudo foram gerados padrões pluviométricos anuais entre 2010-2019. Posteriormente, foram aplicados questionários a 30 famílias de agricultores de sequeiro e avaliadas informações da produção agropecuária dos municípios nas bases de dados censitários públicos para correlacionar, utilizando estatística de Pearson, com padrões pluviométricos. Entre o período estudado, seis anos apresentaram padrões pluviométricos que refletiram características da estiagem. Na produção agrícola os impactos foram visíveis sobre cultivos perenes, porém nos dados censitários a relação entre os padrões pluviométricos e a produção agropecuária apresentaram fracas correlações. Na criação animal, os bovinos foram apontados, pelos agricultores e dados censitários, como os mais atingidos. Os impactos ambientais e econômicos do período de estiagem refletem prováveis contribuições a um eventual processo de desertificação caso o ritmo e os padrões climatológicos das chuvas ocorram de forma semelhante nos próximos anos.
