Search

We study Standard Model extensions with isodoublet vector-like quarks with standard charges. Their presence induces right-handed charged and neutral currents. We identify minimal sets of independent parameters characterizing these extensions, describe useful weak bases, and provide parameterizations for all quark mixing. We analyze the intricacies of CP violation in such scenarios, finding a complete set of CP-odd invariants for the single doublet case. Crucially, we uncover a connection between weak-basis invariants and effective rephasing invariants involving only standard quarks. These results allow us to explore the phenomenology of doublet vector-like quarks through a rephasing-invariant analysis, with an emphasis on CP violation, including the potential role of these fields in explaining the Cabibbo angle anomalies., Comment: 128 pages, 7 figures, 7 tables

When extending the SM, e.g. with vector-like quarks (VLQ), one inevitably encounters more than one CP violating complex phases. In this work, we develop a method useful in reducing the number of complex phases in scenarios with one and two VLQs. We show that these VLQ-models can be described with just one or two physical complex phases respectively and present an explicit alternative parametrization for the quark mixing matrix. Making use of this Reduction of Complex Phases in the case of the Bento-Branco-Parada (BBP) model, i.e. the simplest implementation of the Nelson-Barr solution to the strong CP problem, one also recovers the single phase formulation of BBP model. The seesaw extension of the SM explains the tiny neutrino masses and it is accompanied by many CP violating phases. We study the case where all leptonic CP violation arises from the soft breaking in the heavy Majorana mass matrix. Parameter counting reveals that one less parameter is needed to describe this case. This reduction leads to restrictions on the parameter space of heavy neutrinos. We review the theory and phenomenology of isosinglet vector-like quarks (VLQs). In recent years, interest in VLQs has been increasing, due to their contributions to new physics effects that can be tested in experiments at LHC and High-Luminosity LHC. The similarities of models with isosinglet VLQs and the seesaw framework in the leptonic sector are pointed out. The existence of VLQs leads to flavour-changing neutral currents at tree level and deviations from unitarity of the CKM matrix, introducing rich phenomenological implications. These new effects are naturally suppressed by the masses of the new quarks, that are constrained to be above the electroweak scale. In addition, striking new effects can be achieved with the inclusion of an extra complex scalar singlet. Such a minimal extension of the SM can give rise to new sources of CP violation with profound theoretical implications, allowing for a solution to the strong CP problem and a possible explanation for the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. We list and explain strong motivations to consider this class of models. We also briefly review how models with VLQs can be matched to the SM effective field theory (SMEFT). A detailed analysis of flavour observables that can be affected by the presence of VLQs is presented. Current bounds from collider searches of VLQs are summarized. We suggest a simple relation between the quark and the lepton mixing within the framework of type-I seesaw mechanism. We show that within our ansatz the empirical King-Mohapatra-Smirnov relation, which suggests a connection between the CKM and PMNS mixing where $|V^\text{PMNS}_{13}|\approx \frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}\sin(\theta_C) $, can be derived. We propose a minimal set of weak-basis invariants in an extension of the SM where one up-type isosinglet vector-like quark is introduced, which allows us to obtain all the physical content of the CKM matrix. We present CP-odd invariants of lower order in mass than the one in the SM, which may have important consequences for Baryogenesis. We study the extreme chiral limit, where the two lightest generations have vanishing mass, showing that in this extension, contrary to the SM, CP violation can be observed in collisions much above the electroweak scale., Comment: 19 pages

We put forward the conjecture that the small numbers in the $V_\text{CKM}$ matrix, are generated by physics beyond the Standard Model. We identify as small numbers $V_{ub}$ and the strength of CP violation, measured by $|\text{Im}Q|$, where $Q$ stands for a rephasing invariant quartet of $V_\text{CKM}$. We illustrate how the conjecture can be realised in the context of an extension of the Standard Model where an up-type vector-like quark is introduced leading to a realistic spectrum of quark masses and an effective $V_\text{CKM}$ in agreement with experiment., Comment: 15 pages, 1 table

We propose a minimal extension of the Standard Model where an up-type vector-like quark, denoted $T$, is introduced and provides a simple solution to the CKM unitarity problem. We adopt the Botella-Chau parametrization in order to extract the $4\times 3$ quark mixing matrix which contains the three angles of the $3\times 3$ CKM matrix plus three new angles denoted $\theta_{14}$, $\theta_{24}$, $\theta_{34}$. It is assumed that the mixing of $T$ with standard quarks is dominated by $\theta_{14}$. Imposing a recently derived, and much more restrictive, upper-bound on the New Physics contributions to $\epsilon_{K}$, we find, in the limit of exact $\theta_{14}$ dominance where the other extra angles vanish, that $\epsilon_{K}^{\text{NP}}$ is too large. However, if one relaxes the exact $\theta_{14}$ dominance limit, there exists a parameter region, where one may obtain $\epsilon_{K}^{\text{NP}}$ in agreement with experiment while maintaining the novel pattern of $T$ decays with the heavy quark decaying predominantly to the light quarks $d$ and $u$. We point out that hints of deviations from unitarity in the first row of the CKM matrix may be explained by the presence of a single vector-like top. We study how the stringent experimental constraints arising from CP Violation in the kaon sector and from meson mixing such as $D^0$-$\overline{D}^0$, $K^0$-$\overline{K}^0$ and $B^0_{d,s}$-$\overline{B}^0_{d,s}$ can be satisfied in the proposed framework. We consider seesaw type-I models including at least one (mostly-)sterile neutrino with mass at the eV scale. Three distinct situations are found, where the presence of light extra neutrinos is naturally justified by an approximately conserved lepton number symmetry. To analyse these scenarios consistently, it is crucial to employ an exact parametrisation of the full mixing matrix. We provide additional exact results, including generalised versions of the seesaw relation and of the Casas-Ibarra parametrisation, valid for every scale of seesaw. We find that the existence of a light sterile neutrino imposes an upper bound on the lightest neutrino mass. We further assess the impact of light sterile states on short- and long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, emphasise future detection prospects, and address CP Violation in this framework via the analysis of CP asymmetries and construction of weak basis invariants. Optical cloaking consists in hiding from sight an object by properly deviating the light that comes from it. An optical cloaking device (OCD) is an artifact that hides the object and, at the same time, its presence is not (or should not be) noticeable for the observer, who will have the impression of being looking through it. At the level of paraxial geometrical optics, suitable for undergraduate courses, simple OCDs can be built by combining a series of lenses. With this motivation, here we present an analysis of a simple projective OCD arrangement. First, a simple theoretical account in terms of the transfer matrix method is provided, and then the outcomes from a series of teaching experiments carried out with this device, easy to conduct in the classroom, are discussed. In particular, the performance of such an OCD is investigated by determining the effect of the hidden object, role here played by the opaque zone of an iris-type diaphragm, on the projected image of an illuminated transparent slide (test object). That is, cloaking is analyzed in terms of the optimal position and opening diameter of a diaphragm that still warrants an almost unaffected projected image. Because the lenses are not high-quality ones, the OCD is not aberration-free, which is advantageously considered to determine acceptable cloaking conditions (i.e., the tolerance of the device)., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures (substantial changes with respect to previous version, particularly regarding the methodology and experimental setup considered)

We emphasise that even in the extreme chiral limit where only the top and bottom quarks acquire mass, quark mixing is physically meaningful. This implies that the natural value of $|V_{13}|^2 + |V_{23}|^2$ is of order one, which is to be compared to its experimental value of order $10^{-3}$ . We show how this fine-tuning problem of the Standard Model can be solved through an extension of the Standard Model where vector-like quarks and a complex singlet are introduced, together with a flavour symmetry. We address the question of deviations from $3\times 3$ unitarity of the leptonic mixing matrix showing that, contrary to conventional wisdom, one may have significant deviations from unitarity in the framework of type I seesaw mechanism. In order for this scenario to be feasible, at least one of the heavy neutrinos must have a mass at the TeV scale, while the other two may have much larger masses. We extend the standard model with two extra Higgs doublets. Making use of a symmetry principle, we present flavour symmetries based on cycle groups $Z_N$ that oblige each Higgs doublet to contribute to the mass of only one generation, thus accommodating the quark mass hierarchy. We systematically search for all charge configurations that naturally lead to the alignment in flavour space of the quark sectors, resulting in a CKM matrix near to the identity, determined by the quark mass hierarchy, and with the correct overall phenomenological features. The minimal realisation is by the group $Z_7$. We show that only a limited number of solutions exist, and that any accidental global symmetry that may occur together with the discrete symmetry is necessarily anomalous. A phenomenological study of each class of solutions concerning predictions to the flavour changing neutral current (FCNC) phenomena is also performed: for some solutions, it is possible to obtain realistic quark masses and mixing, while the flavour violating neutral Higgs are sufficient lighter to be accessible at LHC., Comment: 19 pages, 2 figures References added, Figures updated. We point out that leptonic weak-basis invariants are an important tool for the study of the properties of lepton flavour models. In particular, we show that appropriately chosen invariants can give a clear indication of whether a particular lepton flavour model favours normal or inverted hierarchy for neutrino masses and what is the octant of $\theta_{23}$. These invariants can be evaluated in any conveniently chosen weak-basis and can also be expressed in terms of neutrino masses, charged lepton masses, mixing angles and CP violation phases., Comment: 10 pages, no figures

We show how a novel fine-tuning problem present in the Standard Model can be solved through the introduction of a single flavour symmetry G, together with three $Q = - 1/3$ quarks, three $Q = 2/3$ quarks, as well as a complex singlet scalar. The symmetry G is extended to the additional fields and it is an exact symmetry of the Lagrangian, only spontaneously broken by the vacuum. Specific examples are given and a phenomenological analysis of the main features of the model is presented. It is shown that even for vector-like quarks with masses accessible at the LHC, one can have realistic quark masses and mixing, while respecting the strict constraints on process arising from flavour changing neutral currents (FCNC). We point out that, in the context of the SM, $|V^2_{13}| + | V^2_{23}|$ is expected to be large, of order one. The fact that $|V^2_{13}| + |V^2_{23}| \approx 1.6 \times 10^{-3}$ motivates the introduction of a symmetry S which leads to $V_{CKM} ={1\>\!\!\!\mathrm{I}} $, with only the third generation of quarks acquiring mass. We consider two scenarios for generating the mass of the first two quark generations and full quark mixing. One consists of the introduction of a second Higgs doublet which is neutral under S. The second scenario consists of assuming New Physics at a high energy scale , contributing to the masses of light quark generations, in an effective field theory approach. This last scenario leads to couplings of the Higgs particle to $s\overline s$ and $c \overline c$ which are significantly enhanced with respect to those of the SM. In both schemes, one has scalar-mediated flavour- changing neutral currents which are naturally suppressed. We study leptonic CP violation from a new perspective. For Majorana neutrinos, a new parametrization for leptonic mixing of the form $V=O_{23} O_{12} K_{a}^{i}\cdot O$ reveals interesting aspects that are less clear in the standard parametrization. We identify several important scenario-cases with mixing angles in agreement with experiment and leading to large leptonic CP violation. In the context of two Higgs doublet models, we study the conditions required in order to have stable quasi-alignment in flavour space. We show that stability under the RGE imposes strong constraints on the flavour structure of the Yukawa couplings associated to each one of the Higgs doublets. In particular, we find a novel solution, where all Yukawa couplings are proportional to the so-called democratic matrix. This solution is rather unique, since it is the only stable solution which is a good starting point for reproducing the observed pattern of quark masses and mixing. We also show that this stable solution can be obtained by imposing on the Lagrangian a $Z_3 \times Z^\prime_3$ flavour symmetry. Quark masses of the lighter quark generations are generated through the breaking of this discrete symmetry, and, at this stage, scalar mediated FCNC arise, but are naturally suppressed by the smallness of light quark masses. In this way, we relate Higgs alignment to the hierarchy of quark masses through a discrete family symmetry., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

We propose that the observed large leptonic mixing may just reflect a quasidegeneracy of three Majorana neutrinos. The limit of exact degeneracy of Majorana neutrinos is not trivial, as leptonic mixing and even CP violation may occur. We conjecture that the smallness of $|U_{13}|$, when compared to the other elements of $U_{PMNS}$, may just reflect the fact that, in the limit of exact mass degeneracy, the leptonic mixing matrix necessarily has a vanishing element. We show that the lifting of the mass degeneracy can lead to the measured value of $|U_{13}|$ while at the same time accommodating the observed solar and atmospheric mixing angles. In the scenario we consider for the breaking of the mass degeneracy there is only one CP violating phase, already present in the limit of exact degeneracy, which upon the lifting of the degeneracy generates both Majorana and Dirac-type CP violation in the leptonic sector. We analyse some of the correlations among physical observables and point out that in most of the cases considered, the implied strength of leptonic Dirac-type CP violation is large enough to be detected in the next round of experiments., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures. We propose for the flavour structure of both the quark and lepton sectors, the principle of Universal Democracy (UD), which reflects the presence of a $Z_3$ symmetry. In the quark sector, we emphasize the importance of UD for obtaining small mixing and flavour alignment, while in the lepton sector, large mixing, including the recently measured value of $U_{e3}$, is obtained in the UD framework through the seesaw mechanism. An interesting correlation between the values of $U_{e3}$ and $\sin^2(\theta_{23})$ is pointed out, with the prediction of $\sin^2(\theta_{23})\approx 0.42$ in the region where $U_{e3}$ is in agreement with the DAYA-BAY experiment., Comment: 3 figures

We show that the main features of the pattern of fermion masses and mixing can be expressed in terms of simple relations among weak-basis invariants. In the quark sector, we identify the weak-basis invariants which signal the observed alignment of the up and down quark mass matrices in flavour space. In the lepton sector, we indicate how a set of conditions on weak-basis invariants can lead to an approximate tribimaximal lepton mixing matrix. In this work, the capability of primary, monocyte-derived dendritic cells (DCs) to uptake iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) is assessed and a strategy to induce selective cell death in these MNP-loaded DCs using external alternating magnetic fields (AMFs) is reported. No significant decrease in the cell viability of MNP-loaded DCs, compared to the control samples, was observed after five days of culture. The amount of MNPs incorporated into the cytoplasm was measured by magnetometry, which confirmed that 1 to 5 pg of the particles were uploaded per cell. The intracellular distribution of these MNPs, assessed by transmission electron microscopy, was found to be primarily inside the endosomic structures. These cells were then subjected to an AMF for 30 min, and the viability of the blank DCs (i.e., without MNPs), which were used as control samples, remained essentially unaffected. However, a remarkable decrease of viability from approximately 90% to 2-5% of DCs previously loaded with MNPs was observed after the same 30 min exposure to an AMF. The same results were obtained using MNPs having either positive (NH2+) or negative (COOH-) surface functional groups. In spite of the massive cell death induced by application of AMF to MNP-loaded DCs, the amount of incorporated magnetic particles did not raise the temperature of the cell culture. Clear morphological changes at the cell structure after magnetic field application were observed using scanning electron microscopy. Therefore, local damage produced by the MNPs could be the main mechanism for the selective cell death of MNP-loaded DCs under an AMF. Based on the ability of these cells to evade the reticuloendothelial system, these complexes combined with an AMF should be considered as a potentially powerful tool for tumour therapy., Comment: In Press. 33 pages, 11 figures

We suggest a simple highly predictive ansatz for charged lepton and light neutrino mass matrices, based on the assumption of universality of Yukawa couplings. Using as input the charged lepton masses and light neutrino masses, the six parameters characterizing the leptonic mixing matrix $V_{PMNS}$, are predicted in terms of a single phase $\phi$, which takes a value around $\phi={\frac{\pi}{2}}$. Correlations among variuos physical quantities are obtained, in particular $V^{PMNS}_{13}$ is predicted as a function of ${\Delta}m^2_{21}$, ${\Delta}m^2_{31}$ and $\sin^2(\theta_{sol})$, and restricted to the range $0.167<|V^{PMNS}_{13}|<0.179$., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

We address the flavour problem by incorporating the hypothesis of universal strength of Yukawa couplings in the framework of a 5D GUT model compactified on an $S^1/(Z_2 \times Z_2^{\prime})$ orbifold. We show that a quantitatively successful picture of fermion masses and mixings emerges from the interplay between the bulk suppression factors of geometric origin and the phases of the Yukawa matrices. For a RS model, with SM fields in the bulk and the Higgs boson on the TeV-brane, we suggest two specific structures for the Yukawa couplings, one based on a permutation symmetry and the other on the Universal Strength of Yukawa couplings hypothesis (USY). In USY, all Yukawa couplings have equal strength and the difference in the Yukawa structure lies in some complex phase. In both scenarios, all Yukawa couplings are of the same order of magnitude. Thus, the main features of the fermion hierarchies are explained through the RS geometrical mechanism, and not because some Yukawa coupling is extremely small. We find that the RS model is particularly appropriate to incorporate the suggested Yukawa configurations. Indeed, the RS geometrical mechanism of fermion locations along the extra dimension, combined with the two Yukawa scenarios, reproduces all the present experimental data on fermion masses and mixing angles. It is quite remarkable that in the USY case, only two complex phases of definite value +-Pi/2 are sufficient to generate the known neutrino mass differences, while at same time, permitting large leptonic mixing in agreement with experiment., Comment: 11 pages

We point out that New Physics can play an important r\^ ole in rescuing some of the Yukawa texture zero ans\" atze which would otherwise be eliminated by the recent, more precise measurements of $V_{CKM}$. As an example, a detailed analysis of a four texture zero ansatz is presented, showing how the presence of an isosinglet vector-like quark which mixes with standard quarks, can render viable this Yukawa texture. The version of the higher-dimensional Randall-Sundrum (RS) model with matter in the bulk, which addresses the gauge hierarchy problem, has additional attractive features. In particular, it provides an intrinsic geometrical mechanism that can explain the origin of the large mass hierarchies among the Standard Model fermions. Within this context, a good solution for the gauge hierarchy problem corresponds to low masses for the Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitations of the gauge bosons. Some scenarios have been proposed in order to render these low masses (down to a few TeV) consistent with precision electroweak measurements. Here, we give specific and complete realizations of this RS version with small KK masses, down to 1 TeV, which are consistent with the entire structure of the fermions in flavour space: (1) all the last experimental data on quark/lepton masses and mixing angles (including massive neutrinos of Dirac type) are reproduced, (2) flavour changing neutral current constraints are satisfied and (3) the effective suppression scales of non-renormalizable interactions (in the physical basis) are within the bounds set by low energy flavour phenomenology. Our result, on the possibility of having KK gauge boson modes as light as a few TeV, constitutes one of the first theoretical motivations for experimental searches of direct signatures at the LHC collider, of this interesting version of the RS model which accommodates fermion masses., Comment: 27 pages, Latex file. We show that a large class of sets of leptonic texture zeros considered in the literature imply the vanishing of certain CP-odd weak-basis invariants. These invariant conditions enable one to recognize a flavour model corresponding to a set of texture zeros, when written in an arbitrary weak-basis where the zeros are not manifest. We also analyse the r\^ ole of texture zeros in allowing for a connection between leptogenesis and low-energy leptonic masses, mixing and CP violation. Amongst the diverse propositions for extra dimensional scenarios, the model of Randall and Sundrum (RS), which offers a solution for the long standing puzzle of the gauge hierarchy problem, has attracted considerable attention from both the theoretical and experimental points of view. In the context of the RS model with gauge bosons and fermions living in the bulk, a novel type of mechanism has arisen for interpreting the strong mass hierarchy of the Standard Model fermions. This purely geometrical mechanism is based on a type and flavor dependent localization of fermions along a warped extra dimension. Here, we find concrete realizations of this mechanism, reproducing all the present experimental data on masses and mixings of the entire leptonic sector. We consider the case of Dirac neutrino masses (due to an additional right handed neutrino) where the various constraints on RS parameter space are taken into account. The scenarios, elaborated in this paper, generate the entire lepton mass hierarchy and mixing, essentially, via the higher-dimensional mechanism, as the Yukawa coupling dependence is chosen to be minimal. In addition, from the above mechanism, we predict the typical lepton mixing angle 10^-5 < sin(theta_13) < 10^-1, a neutrino mass spectrum with normal hierarchy and the smallest neutrino mass to lie approximately in the range: 10^-11 eV < m_nu_1 < 10^-2 eV. We present CP-odd Higgs-basis invariants, which can be used to signal CP violation in a multi-Higgs system, written in an arbitrary Higgs basis. It is shown through specific examples how these CP-odd invariants can also be useful to determine the character of CP breaking (i.e. whether it is hard or soft CP breaking) in a given Higgs Lagrangian. We analyse in detail the cases of two and three Higgs doublets.

We emphasize the crucial r\^ ole played by non-factorizable phases in the analysis of the Yukawa flavour structure performed in weak bases with Hermitian mass matrices and with vanishing $(1,1)$ entries. We show that non-factorizable phases are important in order to generate a sufficiently large $\sin 2 \beta $. A method is suggested to reconstruct the flavour structure of Yukawa couplings from input experimental data both in this Hermitian basis and in a non-Hermitian basis with a maximal number of texture zeros. We propose a flavour structure for the leptonic sector of the Standard Model, based on the idea of universality of Yukawa couplings, which accommodates all the experimental data on neutrino masses and mixing, at the same time predicting specific correlations between low energy measurable quantities, such as the ratio of neutrino squared mass differences, $|U_{13}|$, the leptonic Dirac phase, and the double-beta decay mass parameter. We describe a method that is used to reduce, significantly, the number of CP violating complex phases in the Yukawa parameters. With this Reduction of Complex Phases (RCP) we obtain only one CP violating complex phase in the case where the neutrinos have an (effective) $3\times 3$ Majorana mass matrix. We show that large leptonic mixing occurs most naturally in the framework of the Sandard Model just by adding a fourth generation. One can then construct a small $Z_4$ discrete symmetry, instead of the large $S_{4L}\times S_{4R}$, which requires that the neutrino as well as the charged lepton mass matrices be proportional to a $4\times 4$ democratic mass matrix, where all entries are equal to unity. Unlike in the quark sector where simple $S_3$ permutation symmetries can generate the general features of quark masses and mixings, we find it impossible (under conditions of hierarchy for the charged leptons and without considering the see-saw mechanism or a more elaborate extension of the SM) to guarantee large leptonic mixing angles with any general symmetry or transformation of only known particles. We show that there is a minimal discrete symmetry which leads to the extended flavour democracy scenario constraining the Dirac neutrino, the charged lepton and the Majorana neutrino mass term ($M_R$) to be all proportional to the democratic matrix, with all elements equal. In particular, this discreet symmetry forbids other large contributions to $M_R$, such as a term proportional to the unit matrix, which would normally be allowed by a $S_{3L}\times S_{3R}$ permutation symmetry. The exact democratic structure for the quark mass matrix, resulting from the action of the family symmetry group $A_{3L}\times A_{3R}$, is broken by the vaccum expectation values of heavy singlet fields appearing in non renormalizable dimension 6 operators. In the framework of a minimal extension of the SM, where the only additional fields are three right-handed neutrinos, we suggest that the charged lepton, the Dirac neutrino and the right-handed Majorana neutrino mass matrices are all, to leading approximation, proportional to the democratic matrix. With the further assumption that the breaking of this extended democracy is universal for all leptonic mass matrices, a large mixing in the 2-3 sector can be obtained and is linked to the seesaw mechanism, together with the existence of a strong hierarchy in the masses of right-handed neutrinos. We study the exactly degenerate case for three lefthanded Majorana neutrinos building a general parametrization for the leptonic mixing matrix characterized by two angles and one CP violating phase and identify a weak-basis invariant relevant, in this case, for CP violation. After lifting the degeneracy, this parametrization accommodates the present data on atmospheric and solar neutrinos, as well as neutrinoless double beta decay.
