Abstract We describe the geographical variation in tree species composition across Amazonian forests and show how environmental conditions are associated with species turnover. Our analyses are based on 2023 forest inventory plots (1 ha) that provide abundance data for a total of 5188 tree species. Within-plot species composition reflected both local environmental conditions (especially soil nutrients and hydrology) and geographical regions. A broader-scale view of species turnover was obtained by interpolating the relative tree species abundances over Amazonia into 47,441 0.1-degree grid cells. Two main dimensions of spatial change in tree species composition were identified. The first was a gradient between western Amazonia at the Andean forelands (with young geology and relatively nutrient-rich soils) and central–eastern Amazonia associated with the Guiana and Brazilian Shields (with more ancient geology and poor soils). The second gradient was between the wet forests of the northwest and the drier forests in southern Amazonia. Isolines linking cells of similar composition crossed major Amazonian rivers, suggesting that tree species distributions are not limited by rivers. Even though some areas of relatively sharp species turnover were identified, mostly the tree species composition changed gradually over large extents, which does not support delimiting clear discrete biogeographic regions within Amazonia.

Abstract Background Brazil is one of the countries with the highest rates of caesarean sections (CS), reaching almost 90% of births in the private sector. A quality improvement project called “Adequate Childbirth Project (PPA)” was conceived to reduce CS in the private sector. This project consisted of four primary components: “Governance”, “Participation of Women”, “Reorganization of Care” and “Monitoring”. This paper aims to evaluate: (1) which specific activities of the PPA had the largest effect on the probability of a woman having a vaginal delivery; (2) which primary component of the PPA had the largest effect on the probability of vaginal delivery and (3) which scenarios combining the implementation of different activities planned in the PPA had a higher effect on the probability of vaginal delivery. Methods A sample of 12 private hospitals participating in the PPA was evaluated. We used a Bayesian Network (BN) to capture both non-linearities and complex cause-effect relations. The BN integrated knowledge from experts and data from women to estimate 26 model parameters. The PPA was evaluated in 2473 women belonging to groups 1–4 of the Robson classification, who were divided into two groups: those participating or not participating in the PPA. Results The probability of a woman having a vaginal delivery was 37.7% higher in women participating in the PPA. The most important component of the project that led to an increase in the probability of vaginal delivery was “Reorganization of Care”, leading to a 73% probability of vaginal delivery among women in labor. The activity that had the greatest effect on the type of delivery was access to best practices during labor, with a 72% probability of vaginal delivery. Considering the 12 scenarios combining the different activities of the PPA, the best scenarios included: a non-scheduled delivery, access to information about best practices, access to at least 4 best practices during labor and respect of the birth plan, with an 80% probability of vaginal delivery in the best combinations. Conclusion PPA has been shown to be an effective quality improvement program, increasing the likelihood of vaginal delivery in private Brazilian hospitals.

High-nitrogen (high-N) austenitic stainless steels (ASS) are used in orthopedic implants due to their mechanical properties, human biocompatibility, and affordable cost. However, the high content of (Ni–Nb–N)-rich precipitates can cause allergic reactions and significant challenges in the manufacturing of prostheses. This study investigates the competition between work hardening (WH), dynamic recovery (DRV), and dynamic recrystallization (DRX) during the physical simulation of an ASTM F-1586 steel by thermomechanical processing, using the Kocks-Mecking and Avrami constitutive models. The parameters were obtained through continuous isothermal torsion tests at the temperature range of 900–1200 °C, strain rates between 0.01 and 10 s−1 and a total deformation of 4.0. Determined by compositional-analytical methods, the stacking fault energy (γsfe) was correlated with the stress level (σi) according to the Uesugi and Dai models. Results indicated a high activation energy for hot deformation (Qdef = 587 kJ/mol), affecting the shape of the curves. The γsfe value varied along the curves, delaying the onset of the DRX (σc = 0.928σp). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses revealed a direct competition between work-hardened and recrystallized grains in the early part of the curves, due to WH-DRV synergy. After the peak stress (σp), the progress of DRX was slow, with the Avrami exponent (n) between 1.1 and 1.9, completing only after large deformations (σss = 0.714σp). INTRODUCTION: Patients indicated for palliative care may have losses in functional capacity and quality of life, but there is little information about these conditions in primary health care. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the functional and symptomatic aspects of individuals indicated for palliative care in primary care. METHODS: This cross-sectional descriptive study involved six family health teams from three basic health units in Londrina, Paraná, Brazil that indicated patients with palliative care needs. The patients were assessed with the Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS), the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS) and a sociodemographic and clinical questionnaire. RESULTS: 73 patients (30 men and 43 women) whose mean age was 77.2 ± 12.1 years were included. Dementia and cerebrovascular diseases were the most frequent conditions, with 20 (27%) and 19 (26%) patients, respectively. The mean KPS score was 47.9 ± 13.9 points (44 ± 11.3 points for men and 51 ± 11.3 for women), with a significant difference between the sexes (p = 0.023). Cancer patients had better functionality than those with neurological diseases. The ESAS, whose mean score was below 3 points (mild intensity), indicated that the most frequent symptoms were impaired well-being, pain, fatigue and drowsiness. Patients without caregivers had better functional status, but greater pain and fatigue intensity. CONCLUSION: All patients had some functional limitations, and those with neurological diseases were the most affected. The symptoms were generally mild. The presence of caregivers may positively influence symptom control.

RESUMEN Introducción y objetivos: Actualmente, el acceso radial distal (ARD) para procedimientos coronarios es una alternativa al acceso radial convencional, con algunas ventajas descritas principalmente en términos de complicaciones relacionadas con el acceso. A pesar de la evidencia, pocos centros han establecido el ARD como acceso sistemático para procedimientos coronarios. El objetivo de esta cohorte prospectiva es presentar la experiencia inicial en nuestro centro con el ARD en pacientes con indicación de procedimientos coronarios en cualquier escenario clínico. Métodos: Se incluyeron 1.000 procedimientos de ARD (943 pacientes) realizados en un único centro de agosto de 2020 a noviembre de 2023. El estudio fue realizado con pacientes en cualquier escenario clínico. Se recomendó la valoración por ultrasonido del trayecto de la arteria radial antes y después del procedimiento, así como la punción ecoguiada. El objetivo principal fue el éxito del ARD. Como objetivos secundarios se consideraron el éxito del procedimiento coronario, el desempeño del ARD y las complicaciones relacionadas con el acceso. Resultados: El éxito del ARD fue del 97,4% (n = 974) y el éxito del procedimiento coronario fue del 96,9% (n = 969). El tiempo de acceso del ARD fue de 40 segundos [rango intercuartílico, 30-60]. Se realizaron procedimientos diagnósticos en el 64% (n = 644) e intervencionismo coronario percutáneo (ICP) en el 36% (n = 356), incluyendo ICP primario en el 13% (n = 128) de los pacientes. La valoración por ultrasonido antes del procedimiento se llevó a cabo en el 83% (n = 830) y la punción ecoguiada en el 85% (n = 848). La incidencia de complicaciones relacionadas con el acceso fue del 2,9% (n = 29). Conclusiones: Este estudio muestra la viabilidad y la seguridad del ARD principalmente guiado por ultrasonido para los procedimientos coronarios en cualquier escenario clínico, con un alto porcentaje de éxito del acceso y de éxito del procedimiento, además de una baja incidencia de complicaciones relacionadas con el acceso. ABSTRACT Introduction and objectives: Distal radial access (DRA) for coronary procedures is currently recognized as an alternative to conventional transradial access, with documented advantages primarily related to access-related complications. However, widespread adoption of DRA as the default approach remains limited. Therefore, this prospective cohort study aimed to present our initial experience with DRA for coronary procedures in any clinical settings. Methods: From August 2020 to November 2023, we included 1000 DRA procedures (943 patients) conducted at a single center. The study enrolled a diverse patient population. We recommended pre- and postprocedural ultrasound evaluations of the radial artery course, with ultrasound-guided DRA puncture. The primary endpoint was DRA success, while secondary endpoints included coronary procedure success, DRA performance metrics, and the incidence of access-related complications. Results: The DRA success rate was 97.4% (n = 974), with coronary procedure success at 96.9% (n = 969). The median DRA time was 40 [interquartile range, 30-60] seconds. Diagnostic procedures accounted for 64% (n = 644) of cases, while 36% (n = 356) involved percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), including primary PCI in 13% (n = 128). Pre-procedure ultrasound evaluation and ultrasound-guided DRA were performed in 83% (n = 830) and 85% (n = 848) of cases, respectively. Access-related complications occurred in 2.9% (n = 29). Conclusions: This study shows the safety and feasibility of DRA for coronary procedures, particularly when performed under ultrasound guidance in a diverse patient population. High rates of successful access and coronary procedure outcomes were observed, together with a low incidence of access-related complications. Este artigo analisou a migração de retorno de brasileiros do Paraguai motivada pela busca por serviços públicos ligados, principalmente, a saúde, no arco Sul da fronteira. Trata-se de um estudo de história oral, tendo por base entrevistas semiestruturadas, realizadas em pesquisa de campo que aconteceram entre 2019 a 2023, em municípios fronteiriços brasileiros, como São Miguel do Iguaçu, Foz do Iguaçu e Santa Terezinha de Itaipu, no estado do Paraná, que partiram do Departamento paraguaio fronteiriço de Alto Paraná. Destes apenas um entrevistado mora no distrito paraguaio de Santa Rita. Em um primeiro momento discutiremos os conceitos de fronteira, migração e cidadania. Em um segundo momento, analisaremos os relatos de nossos entrevistados referentes à motivação para a retorno ao país de origem. Esse estudo permite afirmar que para estes imigrantes, no contexto de seus retornos com pouco ou nenhum recurso financeiro a fronteira se apresenta como um recurso social pela gratuidade do SUS, qualidade, confiança, proximidade com o Paraguai e pela língua portuguesa. Somando-se a isso a cidadania brasileira, que permite a elaboração de documentos ajuda nesse acesso a saúde pública. Além disso, a presença de redes familiares tornou-se um elemento facilitador da migração, tanto transfronteiriça como transnacional.

Objetivo: Abordar as peculiaridades etiológicas e fisiopatológicas das diversas patologias que acometem os pés dos idosos, com ênfase nos aspectos diagnósticos e terapêuticos. Método: Revisão da literatura de 1987 a 2012 sobre o tema em questão. Resultado: Os metatarsos constituem o local mais frequente de dor, com predominância no sexo feminino. Entre as causas mais frequentes, destacamos: fasciite plantar, hálux valgo, dedos em garra, martelo ou malho, pé cavo, pé plano, síndrome do esporão do calcâneo, tendinites, onicomicose, osteoartrose, artrite reumatoide, crise gotosa, diabetes, entre outras. Para o diagnóstico deve-se realizar a avaliação geriátrica ampla, mas também avaliação vascular, exame neurológico, biomecânica e avaliação dermatológica. O tratamento envolve mudança de hábitos, fisioterapia e abordagens específicas de acordo com a causa do pé doloroso. Conclusão: Essa afecção é frequente e passível de prevenção quando aliada a diagnóstico e tratamento adequados objetivando redução de incapacidade e preservação de autonomia e independência.

Abstract Over the past years, there has been a sustained effort to systematically enhance our understanding of medium-induced emissions occurring in the quark-gluon plasma, driven by the ultimate goal of advancing our comprehension of jet quenching phenomena. To ensure meaningful comparisons between these new calculations and experimental data, it becomes crucial to model the interplay between the radiation process and the evolution of the medium parameters, typically described by a hydrodynamical simulation. This step presents particular challenges when dealing with calculations involving the resummation of multiple scatterings, which have been shown to be necessary for achieving an accurate description of the in-medium emission process. In this paper, we extend our numerical calculations of the fully-resummed gluon spectrum to account for longitudinally expanding media. This new implementation allows us to quantitatively assess the accuracy of previously proposed scaling laws that establish a correspondence between an expanding medium and a “static equivalent”. Additionally, we show that such scaling laws yield significantly improved results when the static reference case is replaced by an expanding medium with the temperature following a simple power-law decay. Such correspondence will enable the application of numerical calculations of medium-induced energy loss in realistic evolving media for a broader range of phenomenological studies.

Abstract Persistent and toxic chemicals remain a significant pollution concern, underscored by the European Union's Zero Pollution Action Plan. Daily exposure to complex chemical mixtures starts early and continues throughout life, for instance for consumer products such as toys, plasticware, furniture, and synthetic fibres. EU-funded research projects like COPHES/DEMOCOPHES, HBM4EU, and PARC have documented population exposure to these substances. The outcomes of such research initiatives have contributed to highlighting the adverse health impacts of Substances of Concern (SoCs), leading to several regulatory actions within the EU. SoCs include hazardous chemicals such as carcinogens, mutagens, endocrine disruptors, and “persistent, bioaccumulative, and mobile” (PBM) chemicals. The digital transformation in chemicals management has resulted in policies that mandate electronic submissions of chemical risk assessment-relevant data, and the creation of industry-specific databases like the Substances of Concern in Products (SCIP) database, established by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) under the revised Waste Framework Directive (WstFD). These databases describe SoCs and their link with products, offering a comprehensive view of chemical quantities, emission sources, exposure pathways, and other relevant data, contingent on robust data governance. Effective chemical risk assessment requires characterizing hazards, exposure sources and levels, and drawing conclusions concluding on potential risks, supported by a well-defined problem formulation and monitoring. This includes setting objectives and defining the scope of the risk assessment and decision-making, particularly regarding early warning signal detection for the purpose of public health protection. Successful risk assessment hinges on access to robust, traceable, accessible, and interoperable data across scientific disciplines and regulatory frameworks. This paper discusses the challenges of aggregating human health risk assessment-relevant chemical information from multiple sources, especially from the perspective of data fusion and reuse. It presents findings from a research project focused on utilizing chemicals datasets from various governmental and scientific sources. The study highlights the need for improved data presentation and availability to enhance usability for all stakeholders. Recommendations are made for the EU Commission, ECHA, industry, and academia to support harmonized data practices, increased transparency, and the development of sustainable chemical applications fostering safer market introductions. These recommendations can also be useful to other data providers that care about the reusability of the data they publish or manage.

Abstract The need for strategies to prevent complications from diabetic neuropathy (DPN) is well recognized. However, foot-ankle exercise programs show weak to moderate evidence, and barriers to their implementation persist, including broad and facilitated access to exercise programs, which guarantee for equity. In this paper, we report for the first time the effectiveness of a web-based foot-ankle exercise program aiming to improve DPN-related outcomes, gait biomechanics and functional outcomes. Sixty-two participants with DPN were randomly allocated into the control group (CG; n = 31), which received the usual care, or the intervention group (IG; n = 31), which received the usual care plus a 12-week foot-ankle exercise program using a web-based software (the SOPeD software). The primary outcomes, DPN symptoms and severity, were assessed using the Brazilian version of the Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument and the Decision Support System for Classification of Diabetic Polyneuropathy, respectively. Secondary outcomes included tactile sensitivity (monofilaments) and vibration perception (tuning fork), functional outcomes, such as foot pain and function (Foot Health Status Questionnaire), foot muscle strength and plantar pressure during gait (emed plate), and foot-ankle kinematics and kinetics during gait. Outcomes were assessed at baseline, 12 and 24 weeks by an assessor blinded to group allocation. DPN symptoms and severity remained unchanged after the web-based foot-ankle program. However, IG showed improvements compared to CG, with greater functional reach at 12 weeks, better foot function, reduced foot pain and greater plantarflexion degree during push-off at 24 weeks. Regarding plantar loading during gait, the forefoot pressure reduced in the IG at 12 weeks compared to baseline, but at 24 weeks, forefoot load increased in the IG compared to CG. The 12-week web-based foot-ankle exercise program was feasible, acceptable, demonstrating safety with minimal adverse events, such as delayed onset muscle soreness and foot muscle cramping. While DPN-related outcomes were unaffected by the 12-week SOPeD program, modest improvements in foot pain and function, functional reach, and changes in plantar pressure and plantarflexion degree during gait were noted, mostly at 24 weeks. Abstract The common cold is the primary cause of illness in the community, with over 200 viral strains identified, and rhinovirus infections being the most prevalent. Coronavirus Disease 19 (COVID-19) is also a significant cause of severe illness. The burden of acute respiratory infections has a significant impact on the economy, resulting in absenteeism from work and school. Rhinovirus infections can exacerbate asthma and other chronic diseases, leading to hospitalization. The objective of this study is to investigate the factors associated with death and survival in patients hospitalized for rhinovirus in Brazil in 2022. This is a retrospective cohort study using data from the national surveillance of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2022 in Brazil, with all the norrifications. We analysed and compared clinical and epidemiological factors and outcomes between survivors and deaths in patients hospitalised for rhinovirus. The absolute and relative frequencies were calculated according to the states. Bivariate analysis was performed using chi-squared test and Fisher’s exact test, while multivariate analysis was performed using COX regression. Abstract The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has shown wastewater (WW) surveillance to be an effective means of tracking the emergence of viral lineages which arrive by many routes of transmission including via transportation hubs. In the Canadian province of Ontario, numerous municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) participate in WW surveillance of infectious disease targets such as SARS-CoV-2 by qPCR and whole genome sequencing (WGS). The Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA), operator of Toronto Pearson International Airport (Toronto Pearson), has been participating in WW surveillance since January 2022. As a major international airport in Canada and the largest national hub, this airport is an ideal location for tracking globally emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs). In this study, WW collected from Toronto Pearson’s two terminals and pooled aircraft sewage was processed for WGS using a tiled-amplicon approach targeting the SARS-CoV-2 virus genome. Data generated was analyzed to monitor trends of SARS-CoV-2 lineage frequencies. Initial detections of emerging lineages were compared between Toronto Pearson WW samples, municipal WW samples collected from the surrounding regions, and Ontario clinical data as published by Public Health Ontario. Results enabled the early detection of VOCs and individual mutations emerging in Ontario. On average, the emergence of novel lineages at the airport preceded clinical detections by 1–4 weeks, and up to 16 weeks in one case. This project illustrates the efficacy of WW surveillance at transitory transportation hubs and sets an example that could be applied to other viruses as part of a pandemic preparedness strategy and to provide monitoring on a mass scale.

This article analyzes the profile of access to genetic heritage and patenting at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), based on the context of transition between Provisional Measure no. 2,186-16/2001 and Act no. 13,123/2015. In this perspective, the methodological approach is the case study. According to this research, the UFMG predominantly uses samples of the Brazilian genetic heritage from fauna, flora, and microorganisms and patents more inventions derived from access to the genetic heritage in the period after Act no. 13,123/2015. In conclusion, the university tends to direct its accesses to peculiar components of Brazilian biodiversity. Furthermore, these accesses generate specific inventions, which have relevant commercial capacity. Finally, with the enactment of Act no. 13,123/2015, the calls from the academic community for the creation of this new juridical system interfered with the scenario of research that focuses on Brazilian biodiversity.

Abstract Brazil is one of the world’s largest beer producers and also a major food producer. These activities generate a large amount of residues which, if disposed of inappropriately, can have adverse effects on the environment. The objective of this research was to evaluate the potential of using these residues for both mushroom cultivation (traditional use) and the production of mycelium-based composites (innovative use). Mushroom production (Pleurotus sajor-caju) was conducted using only brewer’s spent grains (fresh and dried) and also mixed with banana leaves (1:1) or peach palm leaves (1:1), which are residues widely available in the northern region of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The productivity of mushrooms cultivated using fresh and dried brewer’s spent grains did not exhibit a statistically significant difference, indicating that this residue can be utilized shortly after its generation in the industrial process, thereby reducing costs associated with production. Combining brewer’s spent grains with banana or peach palm leaves resulted in enhanced mushroom production (0.41 and 0.38 g day−1, respectively) compared to using the leaves as a sole substrate. The mushrooms produced contain sugars and a minimal sodium content, and are considered a source of phosphorus. In addition, no toxic elements (Hg and Pb) were present. The mycelium-based composites produced using the residual substrate (after the mushroom harvest) exhibited better mechanical properties (compressive strength = 0.04 MPa, density = 242 kg m−3, and low humidity sorption) than those produced using fresh substrate. The results demonstrate the synergistic effect of combining the two approaches under investigation. The use of brewer´s spent enhance the mushroom productivity and the residual substrate enhance the mechanical properties of mycelium-based composites. The compressive strength, density, and air humidity sorption properties are essential for determining the potential applications of mycelium-based composites. The use of brewer’s spent grains mixed with banana leaves demonstrated significant promise for mushroom production and subsequent application in the development of mycelium-based composites. These sequential approaches contribute to waste valorization and the rational utilization of natural resources, as the mycelium-based composites are considered for substitution of synthetic materials, thereby promoting sustainability for future generations.

Limited data exist on mortality rates after tuberculosis (TB) treatment in the United States. We analyzed mortality rates for all adults in Georgia, USA, who had a TB diagnosis and finished treatment during January 1, 2008–December 31, 2019. We obtained posttreatment mortality rate data from the National Death Index and calculated standardized mortality ratios (SMRs) for TB treatment survivors and the general Georgia population. Among 3,182 TB treatment survivors, 233 (7.3%) had died as of December 31, 2019. The overall TB cohort age- and sex-adjusted SMR was 0.89 (95% CI 0.73–1.05). The SMR among US-born TB treatment survivors was 1.56 (95% CI 1.36–1.77). In the TB cohort, US-born status, HIV co-infection, excess alcohol use, diabetes mellitus, and end-stage renal disease were associated with increased risk for death after TB treatment. TB treatment survivors could benefit from improved linkage to primary and HIV comprehensive care to prevent posttreatment death.

The present study investigates the effects of sonication and cross-linker (oxalic acid) concentration on drug loading and the properties of curcumin-loaded lignin nanoparticles. Selected samples were further assessed for their toxicity and antioxidant potential using the eukaryotic model organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Transmission electron microscopy analyses revealed the formation of spherical nanoparticles with diameters in the range of 39–49 nm. Differential scanning calorimetry experiments confirmed the encapsulation of curcumin. Factorial experimental design analyses indicated that sonication time, wave amplitude, cross-linker concentration, and their interactions significantly influenced both ζ-potential – from (−37.0 ± 1.7) mV to (−48.4 ± 0.6) mV – and curcumin loading – from (3.70 ± 0.32) % to (7.10 ± 0.57) %. These parameters are critical for biomedical applications as they relate to the clearance of nanoparticles from the human bloodstream and drug dosage optimization. Although sonication has been previously reported for the preparation of lignin nanoparticles, this study represents the first documented instance of manipulating drug loading by controlled sonication parameters. While none of the investigated factors significantly affected the mean particle diameter, observations from TEM micrographs suggest that cross-linker concentration and wave amplitude notably influence nanoparticle morphology. Moreover, the curcumin-loaded nanoparticles exhibited non-toxicity toward Saccharomyces cerevisiae and demonstrated the ability to enhance yeast cell tolerance to H2O2-induced oxidative stress, underscoring their antioxidant potential. Therefore, this research significantly contributes to the scientific understanding of how the control of sonication parameters and cross-linkers can modulate the properties of curcumin-loaded lignin nanoparticles for future biomedical applications.

Abstract Objective To investigate the factors associated with diabesity in older women. Methods This epidemiological study used a cross‐sectional design and included 196 older women (72.70 ± 7.20 years) from Jequié, Bahia, Brazil. Diabesity was defined as having both an elevated abdominal circumference (≥88 cm) and diabetes mellitus. For the inferential analyses, we constructed crude models followed by a multiple hierarchical explanatory model, with the following levels: Level 1 (socioeconomic variables), Level 2 (behavioral aspects), and Level 3 (health conditions). Poisson regression with a robust estimator was employed, and we calculated Prevalence Ratios (PR) with 95% Confidence Intervals (CI). Results The prevalence of abdominal obesity, diabetes mellitus, and diabesity were 79.60%, 27.80%, and 22.40%, respectively. Women who were insufficiently active had a higher likelihood of diabesity (PR: 2.04; 95% CI: 1.22–3.41), as did those who spent more time in sedentary behavior (PR: 1.81; 95% CI: 1.04–3.16), used three or more continuous medications (PR: 2.51; 95% CI: 1.29–4.89), or reported a negative self‐perception of health (PR: 2.57; 95% CI: 1.03–5.80). Conclusion The study identified several factors associated with diabesity in older women: insufficient physical activity, prolonged sedentary behavior, polypharmacy, and negative self‐perception of health.

Abstract Objectives This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of dementia among older adults from Florianópolis, in the Southern Region of Brazil. Methods Data were originally drawn from the Epifloripa Aging Cohort Study, a representative and community‐based survey designed to evaluate older people's health. This cross‐sectional study was conducted in two phases: the community‐screening phase, in which the Mini‐Mental State Examination and a multifunctional scale were administered to older subjects and close informants, respectively; and the hospital‐diagnosis phase, when the Cambridge Examination and the National Institute on Aging criteria were used. Adjustment for screening accuracy was made in order to estimate dementia prevalence. Results Of 1184 subjects evaluated in the community, 243 were screened for the diagnosis phase, in which 47 were identified with dementia, resulting in a crude prevalence of 4.5% (95% CI: 3.241–5.758) and an estimated prevalence of 9.2% (95% CI: 7.446–10.954). Dementia was associated with older ages, lower education levels, and the presence of stroke. Mild alcohol use (in comparison with no alcohol use), community‐group practice, internet use and a higher level of physical activity, rather than education, decreased the odds ratio for dementia. Education was directly associated with these lifestyle habits. Conclusions Prevalence was lower than that in previous studies in the country, and multivariate analysis reinforced the importance of lifestyle in preventing cognitive disorders in the older population.

A indústria têxtil, em razão de seu grande desenvolvimento e crescimento, vem utilizando mais corantes, o que gera um volume grande de efluentes altamente coloridos e contaminados. Esses efluentes, ao serem descartados sem um tratamento prévio em corpos hídricos, podem gerar problemas ambientais graves. Uma maneira simples, eficiente e barata de remover esses corantes é a técnica de adsorção, um dos métodos mais intensamente investigados e amplamente utilizados para a remoção de poluentes de águas residuais, devido à sua facilidade de operação, viabilidade econômica e alta eficiência. Na literatura são encontrados diversos trabalhos que utilizaram a técnica de modelagem matemática a partir do treinamento de rede neural artificial (RNA) a fim de encontrar um modelo que relacione a eficiência do processo de adsorção. Esta pesquisa visou modelar os dados experimentais da adsorção de corantes têxteis em bagaço de cana-de-açúcar, usando as RNA. A técnica de adsorção foi aplicada em dados globais, de treinamento e teste com uma e duas camadas, todas com 20 repetições, para as quais foram obtidas retas de ajuste do modelo com coeficientes de determinação maiores que 90% para variação dos dados da variável Qt (quantidade de massa adsorvida). Os dados utilizados são provenientes da pesquisa de uma aluna da Universidade Estadual da Paraíba que realizou três tratamentos para o processos de adsorção. A rede FeedForward foi a que apresentou o melhor ajuste aos dados em estudo.

Abstract Background Since 2015, malaria vector control on Bioko Island has relied heavily upon long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLIN) to complement other interventions. Despite significant resources utilised, however, achieving and maintaining high coverage has been elusive. Here, core LLIN indicators were used to assess and redefine distribution strategies. Methods LLIN indicators were estimated for Bioko Island between 2015 and 2022 using a 1x1 km grid of areas. The way these indicators interacted was used to critically assess coverage targets. Particular attention was paid to spatial heterogeneity and to differences between urban Malabo, the capital, and the rural periphery. Results LLIN coverage according to all indicators varied substantially across areas, decreased significantly soon after mass distribution campaigns (MDC) and, with few exceptions, remained consistently below the recommended target. Use was strongly correlated with population access, particularly in Malabo. After a change in strategy in Malabo from MDC to fixed distribution points, use-to-access showed significant improvement, indicating those who obtained their nets from these sources were more likely to keep them and use them. Moreover, their use rates were significantly higher than those of whom sourced their nets elsewhere. Conclusions Striking a better balance between LLIN distribution efficiency and coverage represents a major challenge as LLIN retention and use rates remain low despite high access resulting from MDC. The cost-benefit of fixed distribution points in Malabo revealed significant advantages, offering a viable alternative for ensuring access to LLINs to those who use them.

Abstract Background Racial discrimination is linked to unhealthy food environments and a higher prevalence of food insecurity. However, no study has explored their interrelated effects. We analyzed the relationship between racial discrimination, community food environment, and food insecurity in adults of different socioeconomic status. We also investigated the potential modifying effect of the food environment on the relationship between racism and food insecurity. Methods This was a cross-sectional study of 400 adults aged 20–70 years residing in the central area of ​​Porto Alegre, the capital of Rio Grande do Sul state. Race and racial discrimination were assessed by self-reported race/skin color using the Experiences of Discrimination scale (EOD), respectively. The food environment was assessed using the Nutrition Environment Measures Survey in Stores (NEMS-S) tool. Food insecurity was assessed using the short version of the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale (EBIA for short, in Portuguese). Poisson regression with robust variance was employed for the multivariate analysis. Results The prevalence of food insecurity was higher in areas with a poorer food environment (areas 1 and 3; 56.6% and 58.8%, respectively). Racial discrimination was associated with food insecurity, where every 1-point increase in the racial discrimination score increased the likelihood of food insecurity by 7% (prevalence ratio [PR] 1.07; 95% CI, 1.03–1.20). When stratifying the analyses by food environment, racial discrimination was associated with food insecurity only in areas with a poorer food environment (PR 1.06; 95% CI, 1.01–1.10). Conclusions Experiences of racial discrimination were associated with a higher prevalence of food insecurity in the study population. The community food environment was an effect modifier of this relationship, highlighting the relevance of interventions in the food environment focused on areas with a greater presence of Black people as a way of combating racism and food insecurity.

Abstract This study examined the relation between pandemic-related stressors and mental health among young people (YP) in India during two time points in the waning phase of the pandemic. We use data from two cross-sectional waves of over 20,000 YP aged 5–19 in February 2022, during the peak of the Omicron wave, and October 2022, during a reduction in infections and easing of restrictions. COVID illness/death in the family’s social network, current lockdown stringency, and significant change in household income were examined in relation to adult respondents’ reports of YP internalizing symptoms. Internalizing symptoms declined slightly from February to October 2022. COVID-19 illness/death in the family’s network was generally associated with more internalizing symptoms. Higher lockdown stringency was associated with lower levels of internalizing symptoms. YP in households with increases in income tended to have more internalizing symptoms. Many associations were driven by older adolescents and were stronger during the earlier (Feb-2022) than later (Oct-2022) data collection time-points. The findings illustrate the importance of anchoring results within a study’s specific geographic context, including concurrent events during the study period. Importantly, findings that may initially seem counterintuitive ultimately illuminate the dynamic and complex processes underlying child and adolescent mental health.

Abstract We presented a method to find potential cancer attractors using single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data. We tested our method in a Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM) dataset, an aggressive brain tumor presenting high heterogeneity. Using the cancer attractor concept, we argued that the GBM’s underlying dynamics could partially explain the observed heterogeneity, with the dataset covering a representative region around the attractor. Exploratory data analysis revealed promising GBM’s cellular clusters within a 3-dimensional marker space. We approximated the clusters’ centroid as stable states and each cluster covariance matrix as defining confidence regions. To investigate the presence of attractors inside the confidence regions, we constructed a GBM gene regulatory network, defined a model for the dynamics, and prepared a framework for parameter estimation. An exploration of hyperparameter space allowed us to sample time series intending to simulate myriad variations of the tumor microenvironment. We obtained different densities of stable states across gene expression space and parameters displaying multistability across different clusters. Although we used our methodological approach in studying GBM, we would like to highlight its generality to other types of cancer. Therefore, this report contributes to an advance in the simulation of cancer dynamics and opens avenues to investigate potential therapeutic targets.

Abstract Background Talented athletes exhibit remarkable skills and performance in their respective sports, setting them apart from their peers. It has been observed that genetic polymorphisms can influence variations in sports performance, leading to numerous studies aimed at validating genetic markers for identifying sports talents. This study aims to evaluate the potential contribution of genetic factors associated with athletic performance predisposition in identifying sports talents. Methods A systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA framework, utilizing the PICO methodology to develop the research question. The search was limited to case-control studies published between 2003 and June 2024, and databases such as Medline, LILACS, WPRIM, IBECS, CUMED, VETINDEX, Web of Science, Science Direct, Scopus and Scielo were utilized. The STREGA tool was employed to assess the quality of the selected studies. Results A total of 1,132 articles were initially identified, of which 119 studies were included in the review. Within these studies, 50 genes and 94 polymorphisms were identified, showing associations with sports talent characteristics such as endurance, strength, power, and speed. The most frequently mentioned genes were ACTN3 (27.0%) and ACE (11.3%). Conclusion The ACE I/D and ACTN3 R577X polymorphisms are frequently discussed in the literature. Although athletic performance may be influenced by different genetic polymorphisms, limitations exist in associating them with athletic performance across certain genotypes and phenotypes. Future research is suggested to investigate the influence of polymorphisms in elite athletes from diverse backgrounds and sports disciplines.

El principal objetivo de este estudio es el análisis de la movilización de sedimento durante la avenida controlada del 5 de mayo de 2022 en el curso bajo del río Ebro desde la presa de Ribarroja. Durante este evento, se realizó una campaña de ensayos incluyendo aforo de caudales y medidas de turbidez y concentración de sedimentos en suspensión. Esta información ha permitido simular numéricamente el curso bajo del río Ebro desde la presa de Flix hasta su desembocadura con el modelo Iber, modelo euleriano 2D basado en el esquema de los volúmenes finitos de primer orden. Para ello se ha empleado el módulo de transporte de sedimentos en suspensión que resuelve la ecuación de advección – difusión, que emplea el modelo de erosión y sedimentación de Van-Rijn y resuelve la conservación de masa de Exner para estudiar la evolución del lecho. Los resultados de la modelización numérica son coherentes con la campaña de ensayos y validan el modelo Iber para analizar el transporte de sólidos en suspensión en la zona de estudio.

Abstract This study was conducted with the objective of evaluating the impact of replacing inorganic mineral sources (IM) with amino acid complexed minerals (AACM) in laying hens’ diets on performance, egg quality, bone, and intestinal health. The effects of 4 different diets with varying levels of AACM substitution were evaluated on 400 Lohmann White hens aged 78–98 weeks. The control diet contained only IM sources at levels of 60, 60, 7, 40, 0.2, and 2 mg/kg of Zn, Mn, Cu, Fe, Se, and I, respectively. Abstract Nanocomposites based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are suitable for sensors, due to matrix ability to incorporate nanotube properties. Thus, we developed a low-cost, nanostructured poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) polymer piezoresistive sensor produced by additive manufacturing. For this, solution layers of acetone, dimethylformamide and CNTs functionalized with carboxylic acid were pulverized on an ABS substrate using an aerograph. Electrical characterization revealed an anisotropic piezoresistive response of the material, induced by the printing lines direction. Field Emission Gun-Scanning Electron Microscopy showed the nanostructured film spreading after five layers of CNTs as well as the random entanglement of nanotubes on parallel and perpendicular 3D-printed ABS substrates. Raman spectroscopy indicated compression and p-type doping of CNTs in interaction with the polymer, as seen mainly by the blueshift of the G and 2D subbands. The results show that the material is promising for pressure sensors, with potential applications in robotic haptic feedback systems.

Abstract The SnRK1, hexokinase, and TORC1 (TOR, LST8, RAPTOR) are three pivotal kinases at the core of sugar level sensing, significantly impacting plant metabolism and development. We retrieved and analyzed protein sequences of these three kinase pathways from seven sugarcane transcriptome and genome datasets, identifying protein domains, phylogenetic relationships, sequence ancestry, and in silico expression levels. Additionally, we predicted HXK subcellular localization and assessed its enzymatic activity in sugarcane leaves and culms along development in the field. We retrieved 11 TOR, 23 RAPTOR, 55 LST8, 95 SnRK1α, 98 HXK, and 14 HXK-like putative full-length sequences containing all the conserved domains. Most of these transcripts seem to share a common origin with the three ancestral species of sugarcane: Saccharum officinarum, Saccharum spontaneum, and Saccharum barberi. We accessed the expression profile of sequences from one sugarcane transcriptome. We found the highest enzymatic activity of HXK in culms in the first month, which, at this stage, provides carbon (sucrose) and nitrogen (amino acids) for initial plant development. Our approach places novel sugar sensing sequences that work as a guideline for further research into the underlying signaling mechanisms and biotechnology applications in sugarcane.

Abstract The objective of this study was to compare the aging changes of the dental arches in patients treated without extractions and untreated normal occlusion subjects after a four-decade follow-up. This retrospective study evaluated two groups: The Treated Group (Group T) comprised 16 patients (6 male; 10 female) presenting with Class I or Class II malocclusions treated orthodontically without extractions. Dental models were evaluated 3 stages: T1 (pretreatment, 13.20 years), T2 (posttreatment, 15.07 years) and T3 (long-term posttreatment, 50.32 years). The Untreated Group (Group UT) consisted of 22 untreated normal occlusion individuals. The dental casts were evaluated at the ages of 13.32 (T1), 17.82 (T2) and 60.95 years (T3). Abstract The paper deals with the application of microalgae in building’s façade, regard to the broader project comprising the aspects of the environmental comfort of academic spaces and the energy consumption with on-grid photovoltaic generation, as well as the investigation of alternatives for the improvement of the performance of the building envelopes. Thus, its main objective is the application of interdisciplinary concepts involving Architecture and Biotechnology, as known by Black Ecologies, referring to an investigative interest to explore a new approach of nature, not only related to architectural space, but an emergent environmental focus. This relationship is performed by using photobioreactors with microalgae, installed on the façades of buildings for educational use. The present work presents the methodological outline of the research, based on literature review and case studies; complementary experimental methodologies are also presented to contextualize the subject and its application and feasibility. The current state of art showed an emergent approach in terms of international level, but in the Brazilian context any further research was identified yet. In addition to thermal and energy performance, the strategies will allow the process of sequestration of carbon dioxide and other GHG (greenhouse gases) that impacts on the process of climate change and can contribute to reach the sustainable development. This subject coincides with the discussions of the 2050 scenarios and emission reduction, which were faced at the recent COP-27 and its connections with an integrative way to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Abstract Social media messages often provide insights into offline behaviors. Although hate speech proliferates rapidly across social media platforms, it is rarely recognized as a cybercrime, even when it may be linked to offline hate crimes that typically involve physical violence. This paper aims to anticipate violent acts by analyzing online hate speech (hatred, toxicity, and sentiment) and comparing it to offline hate crime. The dataset for this preregistered study included social media posts from X (previously called Twitter) and Facebook and internal police records of hate crimes reported in Spain between 2016 and 2018. After conducting preliminary data analysis to check the moderate temporal correlation, we used time series analysis to develop computational models (VAR, GLMNet, and XGBTree) to predict four time periods of these rare events on a daily and weekly basis. Forty-eight models were run to forecast two types of offline hate crimes, those against migrants and those against the LGBT community. The best model for migrant crime achieved an R2 of 64%, while that for LGBT crime reached 53%. According to the best ML models, the weekly aggregations outperformed the daily aggregations, the national models outperformed those geolocated in Madrid, and those about migration were more effective than those about LGBT people. Moreover, toxic language outperformed hatred and sentiment analysis, Facebook posts were better predictors than tweets, and in most cases, speech temporally preceded crime. Although we do not make any claims about causation, we conclude that online inflammatory language could be a leading indicator for detecting potential hate crimes acts and that these models can have practical applications for preventing these crimes.

Abstract Psychedelics have a complex history marked by traditional use among indigenous cultures, early scientific interest, and subsequent prohibition. Despite their classification as controlled substances, recent decades have witnessed a resurgence of research into their therapeutic potential for various mental health conditions. However, most studies have focused on controlled clinical settings, leaving a significant gap in understanding how these substances are used in naturalistic contexts, particularly in Latin America. This study investigates the regular use of macrodoses of psychedelics among Latin American adults. We aimed to characterize the sociodemographic profiles, consumption practices, and subjective effects experienced by individuals who use psychedelics regularly. Data were collected via an online survey from 4,270 participants across several Latin American countries. Results indicated a diverse user base with varied motivations, predominantly psychological and spiritual well-being. The most frequently used substance was psilocybin mushrooms, with significant associations found between demographic variables and specific psychedelics used. The study provides new insights into the naturalistic use of psychedelics in Latin America, highlighting the need for informed, safe, and legal use frameworks.

Abstract Background Ovarian cryopreservation is a promising technique despite being hindered by damage from freezing and thawing. Melatonin can mitigate this outcome. Objective This study aimed to evaluate the effect of melatonin on the follicular dynamics of ovarian tissue in a cryopreserved cell culture. Methods Three-month-old adult female Wistar rats (n = 24) weighing approximately 250 g were oophorectomized and divided into two groups (n = 12): the control group (CG) and the melatonin group (MG). In the CG, slow cryopreservation was performed according to the standard protocol with Medium M2 and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). In MG, melatonin diluted in ethyl alcohol vehicle at a concentration of 0.1 μm was added to the culture medium. In both groups, the ovaries were cryopreserved by slow freezing and kept in liquid nitrogen for 24 h. Subsequently, after thawing, the ovaries were reimplanted in the retroperitoneum, one on each side of the great vessels (inferior vena cava and aorta). After 30 days, the animals were euthanized during the diestrus phase; then, the grafts were removed and processed for histomorphometric and immunohistochemical analyses, whereas the blood was subjected to biochemical analysis. Student’s t test was used to assess the difference between the groups. Results The FSH levels in MG (83.79 ± 32.37) were lower than those in CG (120.52 ± 36.59), p = 0.03. The FSH/AMH ratios were also lower in MG (3.53 ± 1.13) than in CG (6.52 ± 2.85), p = 0.001. The SOD2 immunoexpression was higher in MG than in CG regarding all parameters except for the degenerated follicles (follicular cells and internal thecal cells): CG (16.80 ± 4.80 [13.36–20.24]) and MG (14.91 ± 4.04 [12.01–17.79]) p = 0.351. Statistically, the difference in intact follicles (theca + interstitium) between CG (6.60 ± 2.59 [4.75–8.45]) and MG (9.31 ± 3.09 [7.09–11.51]) was significant (p = 0.049), with a small difference in the expression of regular antral follicles. Conclusions Melatonin can improve the quality of cryopreserved tissues, as evidenced in this study, and the evaluation of cryopreserved ovarian grafts, as shown in the melatonin group with better hormonal parameters and greater immunohistochemical expression of the SOD2 antioxidant. Thus, damage is reduced during cryopreservation and transplantation is improved.

The Brazilian army recently developed the military physical training “Cross Operational” (CO), composed of four different difficulty levels. The moderate/high intensity character of CO can damage the muscle fibers, characterized by alterations at the cellular level, which can be evaluated indirectly by intramuscular proteins showing up in the bloodstream. In this context, the analysis of muscle damage biomarkers can be used as part of an initial injury prevention tool and in the evaluation of training progression and post-exercise recovery. This study aimed to observe the acute effect of CO on indirect markers of muscle damage in military personnel of the Brazilian army. Twenty-four male recruits aged between 18 and 26 years participated in the study. The four sessions corresponding to the CO levels were performed in cross-design, with a seven-day washout period, and blood samples were collected at rest, immediately after, 24 and 48 hours after each training session. The measured markers were creatine kinase (CK), myoglobin (Mb) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). In all CO levels, CK had a significant increase 24 hours after CO, whereas Mb and LDH incresead immediately after CO. Regarding recovery time, LDH returned to baseline values within 48 hours in all levels, whereas CK and Mb, after 48 hours of recovery, reduced but did not return to baseline in level 4. The serum elevations of the biomarkers studied, like those found in studies with other consolidated physical training methods, suggest that CO can contribute to the improvement of the physical training of military personnel.

Abstract We previously described a two-component protein nanoparticle vaccine platform that displays 60 copies of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein RBD (RBD-NP). The vaccine, when adjuvanted with AS03, was shown to elicit robust neutralizing antibody and CD4 T cell responses in Phase I/II clinical trials, met its primary co-endpoints in a Phase III trial, and has been licensed by multiple regulatory authorities under the brand name SKYCovioneTM. Here we characterize the biophysical properties, stability, antigenicity, and immunogenicity of RBD-NP immunogens incorporating mutations from the B.1.351 (β) and P.1 (γ) variants of concern (VOCs) that emerged in 2020. We also show that the RBD-NP platform can be adapted to the Omicron strains BA.5 and XBB.1.5. We compare β and γ variant and E484K point mutant nanoparticle immunogens to the nanoparticle displaying the Wu-1 RBD, as well as to soluble prefusion-stabilized (HexaPro) spike trimers harboring VOC-derived mutations. We find the properties of immunogens based on different SARS-CoV-2 variants can differ substantially, which could affect the viability of variant vaccine development. Introducing stabilizing mutations in the linoleic acid binding site of the RBD-NPs resulted in increased physical stability compared to versions lacking the stabilizing mutations without deleteriously affecting immunogenicity. The RBD-NP immunogens and HexaPro trimers, as well as combinations of VOC-based immunogens, elicited comparable levels of neutralizing antibodies against distinct VOCs. Our results demonstrate that RBD-NP-based vaccines can elicit neutralizing antibody responses against SARS-CoV-2 variants and can be rapidly designed and stabilized, demonstrating the potential of two-component RBD-NPs as a platform for the development of broadly protective coronavirus vaccines.

Abstract Background Starting the first job as a young physician is a demanding challenge. Certain skills are important to master this transformation that go beyond the theoretical knowledge and practical skills taught in medical school. Competencies such as communication, leadership and career management skills are important to develop as a young physician but are usually not sufficiently taught in medical school in a structured and comprehensive way. Methods We performed an online survey among final year medical students regarding how they perceive their current competency level in communication, leadership and career management skills. We also assessed how they rate the importance to acquire these competencies and the current emphasis during their medical school education regarding these topics. Results Of 450 final year medical students 80 took part in the voluntary survey and 75 complete datasets were returned (16.7%). The majority of respondents rated different communication skills, leadership skills and career management skills as important or very important for their later clinical work. However, most students felt to be poorly or very poorly prepared by the current medical school curriculum, especially for certain leadership and career management skills. Overall, 90.7% of participants expressed interest in an additional educational course that covers subjects of communication, leadership and career management skills during the later stage of medical school, preferably as a hybrid in-person session that also offers synchronous online participation. Conclusions The results of the survey express the need to address communication, leadership and career management skills in the medical curriculum to be better prepare students for the demands of residency and their further course as physicians. An educational format during the final year of medical school may be suitable to address mentioned topics in the framework of clinical practical exposure.

Abstract Deficiencies in the electron transport chain (ETC) lead to mitochondrial diseases. While mutations are distributed across the organism, cell and tissue sensitivity to ETC disruption varies, and the molecular mechanisms underlying this variability remain poorly understood. Here we show that, upon ETC inhibition, a non-canonical tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle upregulates to maintain malate levels and concomitant production of NADPH. Our findings indicate that the adverse effects observed upon CI inhibition primarily stem from reduced NADPH levels, rather than ATP depletion. Furthermore, we find that Pyruvate carboxylase (PC) and ME1, the key mediators orchestrating this metabolic reprogramming, are selectively expressed in astrocytes compared to neurons and underlie their differential sensitivity to ETC inhibition. Augmenting ME1 levels in the brain alleviates neuroinflammation and corrects motor function and coordination in a preclinical mouse model of CI deficiency. These studies may explain why different brain cells vary in their sensitivity to ETC inhibition, which could impact mitochondrial disease management.

Abstract Background Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a threat to humans and animals that causes intestinal disorders. ABSTRACT: Adequate transfer of passive immunity (TPI) is a cornerstone for a proper health status of calves. In the literature, there is limited information on the prevalence of failure of TPI in dairy-beef crossbred calves and its effect on morbidity, mortality, and ADG during the preweaning period. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the association between TPI with morbidity, mortality, and ADG in preweaning dairy-beef crossbred calves. A total of 1,055 newborn dairy-beef crossbred calves were enrolled upon arrival at a calf-raising facility in California from January to August 2021. Farm of origin, genetic breed group, sex, and BW were recorded upon arrival. Blood was collected at 24 ± 1 h after arrival to evaluate serum IgG concentration, serum total protein (TP), and packed cell volume. The Amazon biome is home to the largest tropical forest on the planet and has the greatest global biodiversity on Earth. Despite this, several less charismatic taxonomic groups, such as amphibians, lack comprehensive studies on their species richness and spatial distribution in the Amazon Region. In this study, we investigated: i) patterns of richness and endemism of Amazonian amphibians across geopolitical and biogeographic divisions, ii) similarities between different Amazonian bioregions, iii) temporal trends in amphibian sampling, iv) conservation status of amphibians according to assessments of the IUCN and v) the importance of diverse data sources in building a robust database of amphibian occurrences. We aggregated data from four different sources: publicly accessible platforms, peer-reviewed articles, grey literature and fieldwork inventories spanning 15 years (2007–2021), ultimately compiling 160,643 records of 947 species across 7,418 sampled sites. The greatest diversity of species was found in Peru, Brazil and Ecuador, with notable amphibian diversity and endemism in regions such as the western basins and the Tapajós River Basin in the central-southern Amazon. Geographical analysis of species diversity revealed four distinct groups defined by latitudinal (the Amazon River) and longitudinal (the Juruá, Madeira and Tapajós Rivers) gradients, with low species similarity (< 40%), particularly in the basins of north-western Amazonia. Amphibian sampling in the Amazon has intensified since the 1950s with the establishment of important research centres such as INPA and the GOELD Museum in the Brazilian Amazon. Approximately 18% of Amazonian amphibian species face extinction risk, according to IUCN assessments, highlighting the need for comprehensive data sources to understand and conserve species in this megadiverse region. Our findings suggest that river systems likely influence Amazonian amphibian species composition due to biogeographic history, emphasising the need for robust taxonomic and spatial databases. This study, therefore, contributes a valuable large-scale dataset for Amazonian amphibians, guiding future research and strategies for amphibian conservation.

Bartonella spp. are opportunistic, vectorborne bacteria that can cause disease in both animals and humans. We investigated the molecular occurrence of Bartonella spp. in 634 phlebotomine sand fly specimens, belonging to 44 different sand fly species, sampled during 2017–2021 in north and northeastern Brazil. We detected Bartonella sp. DNA in 8.7% (55/634) of the specimens by using a quantitative real-time PCR targeting the 16S-23S internal transcribed spacer intergenic region. Phylogenetic analysis positioned the Lutzomyia longipalpis sand fly–associated Bartonella gltA gene sequence in the same subclade as Bartonella ancashensis sequences and revealed a Bartonella sp. sequence in a Dampfomyia beltrani sand fly from Mexico. We amplified a bat-associated Bartonella nuoG sequence from a specimen of Nyssomyia antunesi sand fly. Our findings document the presence of Bartonella DNA in sand flies from Brazil, suggesting possible involvement of these insects in the epidemiologic cycle of Bartonella species.

INTRODUCTION: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the discipline of geriatrics at the Santa Casa de Sao Paulo School of Medical Sciences of São Paulo was adapted to a web-based learning environment due to social distancing measures. OBJECTIVE: To describe the full adaptation of the discipline of geriatrics to a web-based learning tool, of two activities that were developed including the current COVID-19 to illustrate some of the main concepts of geriatric medicine. METHODS: The course was fully adapted to the open-source course management system called MOODLE. The first activity was a COVID-19 clinical case discussion, whose main objective was to include COVID-19 in the content of our course, illustrating some of the main concepts of geriatrics. The second activity was a Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) experience, done via videoconference, which also assessed the impact of social distancing measures on the health of older adults. RESULTS: A total of 43 medical students performed both activities, and 95% of the students considered the inclusion of the COVID-19 into the discipline of geriatrics useful, 88% approved the practical experience of CGA, and 84% felt that they contributed to the health of the interviewees after contact. CONCLUSION: Adapting our discipline to a web-based learning tool, while including the current COVID-19 in our course content and a practical experience of CGA via videoconference was possible and approved by students. The adoption of this initiative may not only be an academic strategy, but also a possible way to improve the quality of life of older people during the COVID‑19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: Self-efficacy is defined as the strength of a person's convictions in being able to perform a given activity and obtain the expected result. It may act as a potent mediator between chronic musculoskeletal pain and how older adults cope with their disabilities. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the determinants of self-efficacy beliefs and fear of physical exercise in community-dwelling older adults with chronic musculoskeletal pain. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited older adults with chronic musculoskeletal pain. Only individuals living in an urban area in southern Brazil and who reported pain for more than 3 months were included. A convenience sample was selected in a nonprobabilistic fashion. The study variables consisted of sociodemographic data; pain based on the Brief Pain Inventory and the Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs for Patients with Chronic Pain; and self-efficacy based on the Chronic Pain Self-Efficacy Scale. Also, simple questions were created for physical exercise beliefs. For statistical analysis, absolute and relative frequency, χ2 test, and Mann-Whitney U test were used as appropriate. RESULTS: The sample consisted of 193 older adults, mostly women with low level of education. Self-efficacy was best rated by older adults living alone and by those who were classified as exclusively nociceptive pain. CONCLUSION: Despite having chronic pain, older adults with higher self-efficacy feel confident in performing their tasks and have greater ability to cope with changes related to aging and to engage in self-care.
