Abstract

ABSTRACT Sending and receiving remittances is central to the negotiation of transnational family life, and to nourishing a sense of copresence among physically distant parties. Although the lived experience of this transaction has a very intimate and personal basis, it is also subject to increasing visual and public representation, as a part of the working of dedicated migration industries. Based on an in‐depth exploration of the advertising materials on the YouTube channel of Western Union (WU), we analyse how money circulation is made visible, emplaced in migrant life circumstances and co‐produced through visual narratives that illuminate the micro‐foundations of copresence and its structural limitations. While following the rationale of a commercial product, and despite their idealized contents, WU's stories are revealing about the relational affordances for virtual copresence, its shortcomings and the social embeddedness of remittances in family life. Abstract

Objective There is growing interest in the early identification of patients with axial PsA (axPsA). We aimed to evaluate whether a dermatology-based screening strategy could help to identify axPsA patients. Methods The dermatologist-centred screening (DCS) questionnaire was administrated by dermatologists to consecutive patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria [(i) age ≥18 years and (ii) clinical diagnosis of psoriasis made by a dermatologist] to identify patients eligible (affirmative answers 1–3c of the DCS) for rheumatological evaluation. Clinical, laboratory, genetic and imaging data were collected from all referred patients. Results Among the 365 patients screened, 265 fulfilled the inclusion criteria and 124/265 (46.8%) were eligible for rheumatological referral. Diagnosis of axPsA, with or without peripheral PsA (pPsA), was made in 36/124 (29.0%) patients; pPsA without axial involvement was found in 21/124 (16.9%) patients. Back pain at screening was recorded in 174 (66%) patients, with 158 (60%) reporting a back pain duration longer than 3 months and 140 (53%) reporting back pain onset before the age of 45 years. Active inflammatory and/or structural post-inflammatory changes in the sacroiliac joints and/or spine were observed in all axPsA patients. Patients with PsA showed a numerically longer duration of back pain and higher CRP levels in comparison with patients with psoriasis without PsA. Conclusion The DCS tool proved to be a valuable screening strategy for detecting and characterizing patients with axPsA in a real-life cohort of psoriasis patients in a dermatological setting and helped to identify a substantial number of patients affected by undiagnosed pPsA. Abstract

Durum wheat debranning fractions (fine and coarse bran) were obtained and included as an ingredient in the formulation of whole-meal spaghetti to study their chemical–nutritional characteristics, in particular folate levels and sensorial properties. Experimental raw pasta had a higher folate content (40.5 µg/100 g) than commercial whole-meal pasta (28.3 µg/100 g), meeting the requirements for the health claim on folate (Reg. EU 432/2012) and for the nutritional claim on dietary fiber. After cooking, folate retention in pasta formulated with coarse bran was 80% and scored an overall “good” sensorial acceptability. Results indicate that whole-meal pasta formulated with folate-rich debranning fractions may represent a natural functional food that, integrated into the diet, could improve the health status of the population.

Abstract

The provision of public goods by agriculture and forestry has been a major topic of the agricultural policy debate in the EU. The objective of this paper is to investigate local stakeholder perceptions regarding the cause-effect relations between agriculture and forestry activities and a broad set of public goods and bads, and hence to contribute to the identification of improved policy options for a more efficient delivery of public goods from rural areas. The study presents an assessment based on 71 stakeholder questionnaires collected from seven case study regions in different EU countries. The survey was based on a list of the most relevant public goods and bads developed with the local stakeholders, and aimed to collect stakeholder perception of positive and negative impacts of agriculture and forestry on a range of environmental assets and their relationship with local drivers, socio-economic and cultural features, and policy mechanisms. The analysis shows that the role of agriculture and forestry in the provision of public goods is perceived as generally positive across the selected case study regions. Stakeholder opinions concerning the negative impacts on the environment were more divergent. In particular, differences regarding the impact of different socio-economic and cultural features, and policy mechanisms are evidenced. The results outline the importance of regulations. Also, payments for environmental services are considered relevant in particular for biodiversity, landscape, and water quality. Abstract

The widely held assumption that any important scientific information would be available in English underlies the underuse of non-English-language science across disciplines. However, non-English-language science is expected to bring unique and valuable scientific information, especially in disciplines where the evidence is patchy, and for emergent issues where synthesising available evidence is an urgent challenge. Yet such contribution of non-English-language science to scientific communities and the application of science is rarely quantified. Here, we show that non-English-language studies provide crucial evidence for informing global biodiversity conservation. By screening 419,679 peer-reviewed papers in 16 languages, we identified 1,234 non-English-language studies providing evidence on the effectiveness of biodiversity conservation interventions, compared to 4,412 English-language studies identified with the same criteria. Relevant non-English-language studies are being published at an increasing rate in 6 out of the 12 languages where there were a sufficient number of relevant studies. Incorporating non-English-language studies can expand the geographical coverage (i.e., the number of 2 degrees x 2 degrees grid cells with relevant studies) of English-language evidence by 12% to 25%, especially in biodiverse regions, and taxonomic coverage (i.e., the number of species covered by the relevant studies) by 5% to 32%, although they do tend to be based on less robust study designs. Our results show that synthesising non-English-language studies is key to overcoming the widespread lack of local, context-dependent evidence and facilitating evidence-based conservation globally. We investigated the role of these mechanisms in explaining variation in male mating success in a typical lekking anuran, the Italian treefrog, Hyla intermedia. The results suggested that both chorus attendance and calling quality may affect male mating success, and that selection on these traits may indirectly result in selection for males with higher-than-average body condition. Both generalized linear models (GLM) and cubic-spline regressions (CSR) showed a monotonic relationship between mating success and chorus attendance, suggesting open-ended directional selection on male chorus tenure. GLMs on call acoustic properties showed a significant association of mating success with several highly intercorrelated call temporal properties (i.e. call rate, pulse rate and call duration), but not with call spectral properties. In both cases, however, CSRs provided evidence that the relationships of the call properties with mating success are unimodal, with peaks close to (spectral properties) or above (temporal properties) the population means. As often observed in anurans, chorus attendance explained much more variation in mating success than did calling quality. However, contrary to what is often assumed, we argue that the important role of endurance rivalry does not reduce, but rather emphasizes, the role of female choice in sexual selection. Migratory freshwater fish (i.e. fish that use freshwater systems, either partly or exclusively) occur around the world and travel between critical habitats to complete their life cycle. They are disproportionately threatened compared to other fish groups but global trends in abun-dance, regional differences and drivers of patterns have not yet been comprehensively described. Using abundance information from the Living Planet Database, we found widespread declines between 1970 and 2016 in tropical and temperate areas and across all regions, all migration categories and all populations. Globally, migratory freshwater fish have declined by an average of 76%. Average declines have been more pronounced in Europe (-93%) and Latin America & Caribbean (-84%), and least in North America (-28%). The percentage of species represented was highest in the two temperate regions of Europe and North America (almost 50%). For the continents of Africa, Asia, Oceania, and South America, data was highly deficient, and we advise against making conclusions on the status of migratory freshwater SUMMARYfish in these areas. Potamodromous fish, have declined more than fish migrating between fresh and salt water on average (-83% vs -73%). Populations that are known to be affected by threats anywhere along their migration routes show an average decline of 94% while those not threatened at the population level have increased on av-erage. Habitat degradation, alteration, and loss accounted for around a half of threats to migratory fish, while over-exploitation accounted for around one-third. Protected, regulated and exploited populations decreased less than unmanaged ones, with the most often recorded actions being related to fisheries regulations, including fishing restrictions, no-take zones, fisheries closures, bycatch reductions and stocking (these were most com-mon in North America and Europe). Recorded reasons for observed increases tended to be mostly unknown or un-described, especially in tropical regions. This information is needed to assemble a more complete picture to assess how declines in migratory freshwater fishes could be reduced or reversed. Our findings confirm that migratory freshwater fish may be more threatened throughout their range than previously documented.
